The last three songs are one of the best final flourishes I’ve ever heard on an album. To end an album like that and then have the singer quit is just the ultimate catharsis.
the 7 min long The Place Where He Inserted the Blade felt like a perfect ending to me. Little did I know they were gonna outdo that with even longer and more heart wrenching tracks.
People can hate on Fantano all they want, but the man's exposed me to bands I would have never even found. This record is incredibly potent and beautiful and I gotta thank him for that initial review because now I'm hooked on this group.
I dont want to sound like a huge Fantano stan or anything, I don’t hold his opinion to gospel, but we are genuinely really lucky that he is the face of online music criticism to be honest. Like we could still be just dealing with faceless journalists on the Fader or someone phoning it in but its pretty obvious Fantano genuinely loves what he does and is passionate about reviewing new music.
I thought The Place Where He Inserted the Blade had a sense of finality to it so I was worried that the closer would feel like an epilogue. Jesus Christ, that ending to Basketball Shoes was like a finale to the apocalypse.
Right like I can never ever understand how can people overlook the emotions that this whole album exhibits. It's not solely about the technicality of the vocals it's more about the emotional weight it carries. One of the parts that hit me hard in the feels was when Issac sung 'Concorde and I die free this time' followed by the instrumental 'breakdown?'. If that doesn't make you ascend to another reality I don't know what will.
Black Country, New Road played out like Joy Division, only less tragic. They exploded onto the scene with an amazing album, followed it up with an even better album, and then the lead singer suddenly left, only this time he didn't kill himself. Good for Isaac, I hope he gets the help he needs
shoutout to @lameflips at 5:42 for perhaps the worst musical take of all time-- that the vocals at the climax of "The Place Where He Inserted The Blade" were "low effort"💀💀💀
i think it gets better as you listen to it imo, you notice more and more, its so incredibly well made and produced, its mix is impeccable, the instruments as they connect and play together, isaacs vocals and lyrical mastery. its all so cinematic, and i cant stop listening to it. I think this is my first ten since to pimp a butterfly, its just simply gorgeous. an absolute tragedy this will never be played live like this, and i wish all the best to isaac, but man he made something special here
I can see reasons to why it wouldn't get a perfect score - pacing issues/some tracks may drag a little too much - production and mixing may come off a little dry and sterile - may play into "indie" tropes that a few listeners may find tiring. None of that phases me though. I think it's perfect.
When I listen to Black Country, New Road it feels like the musical compositions of Swans and Godspeed You! Black Emperor but the singing an emotional level of Car Seat Headrest.
Isaac's voice crack in Basketball Shoes reminded me instantly of Will Toledo. You're spot on. The lyrics also get to the uncomfortably sincere places like CSH, but imo Isaac is a better lyricist.
Oh my god the chat is even annoying when they like the songs wtf. Everyone is constantly comparing them to other artists instead of realising that they're one of the most unique bands right now. "King Krule vibes" "godspeed vibes" "nick cave ish" "this sounds like funeral"
Usually I’d say there’s nothing wrong with comparisons between two bands you like but honestly it does feel a little wrong to compare such a unique band like this with so many combinations of influences
The bandmates literally cited Funeral as influence, they literally said they wanted to become the "next Arcade Fire". It's not a stretch to compare those when it's with the intent of describing the sound.
The albums people most expect anthony to give a 10 is probably the album that he not gonna give a 10 lol. I love this album, but he probably gonna give a 8 or something, and that's totally okay, I would be happy for that. _but a 10 would be pretty poggers ngl_ Edit: 9 :D

As a vocalist i aspire to convey emotions like isaac can. To me that is a much more important part of singing than technically being able to hit every note pitch perfect every time. Something about the rawness or his vocal and the message it sends really hits deep for me
Im an actor in a theatre club in my college and I think isaac nails his singing style because of his poetry dramatization style of delivery. He leans more to the feeling and the emotion rather than singing techniques and it works wonders with his voice. Perfect example of this is in their first album. Most of the lyrics are performed without actually being sung? If that makes sense.
I cannot believe the sheer amount of people who completely missed the point of the original Charli XCX lyrics of Basketball Shoes and call it “cringe inducing” and “creepy”. Isaac knows that it’s both of those things. You fools

But it’s good for him I think to remove himself from a position where he’s showing everyone that’ll listen all his feelings; for now anyway
Yeah …. That’s it, a hint Bright Eyes. A good thing. I get some John Cale vibes in the spoken phrasing also. It’s been a while since I’ve heard my old records. What a track and the headspace to get there that have may have not been sustainable. Them bones….and a their hmmmm..nice crescendo.
After loving this album, I explored Godspeed You, Black Emperor. I absolutely love their stuff, especially LYSFLATH which I’ve listened to dozens of times, but I definitely think BCNR has their own distinct sound and unique elements to distinguish themselves. I really don’t think those two acts can be compared as much as I have seen them be.
Not sure what the point of these reaction streams are, fantano seems too preoccupied with either making faces to the rhythm of the music or reading chat for the music to elicit a genuine reaction. And that's to be expected I guess

I think Basketball Shoes takes a double meaning with the lyrical changes. Especially with the context of him leaving the band and that being a decision that’s obviously been brewing for a while. “Oh your generous loan to me, your crippling interest” could be seen as if he’s speaking to his fans. The fans that so “generously” loaned the band their interest that consequently crippled him with anxiety and made him feel he had to step away to save himself. Might be a stretch but with the other lyrical themes, like Concorde (“I was breathless upon every mountain / just to look for your light / But for less than a moment / we'd share the same sky / And then Isaac will suffer / Concorde will fly”), with Concorde symbolizing the band/their success, I think it makes sense. Again just speculation but something to chew on
