A GameCube controller port mod that lets you use any bluetooth controllers? Now THAT'S a game change.
Or maybe a… controller changer 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Init still rather use gamecube controllers 🤣🤣
Problem ; Not all BT controllers are up to standards. Some have Xinput, other DirectInput. Also can you make the GC OS reads different interfaces?
@@jacklancaster6927 you dizzy blud? GameCube controllers are mad peak init?! You tryna get man vexed or what?
There's been adaptors for this forever, able to use xbox one , ps4,ps5 control , even an nes control if wanted.
bro this is a WILD mod. thank you so much for covering it. i've wanted to LED mod a cube for ages but just never wanted to mess with the soldering or even buy the tools for it. this does that and gives you wayyy more functionality. definitely just pre-ordered it!
Great review John! Just pre-ordered one of these. Recently did a GameCube mod a few months ago. Ordered a modded controller board off of eBay with a hot swap battery and custom LED. This is SOOOOOOO much better! Wireless, remote reset/power on/off, LEDs in the ports… I had to order one immediately. This is such a HUGE upgrade. Can’t wait to get it

Dude! I'm so jelly! 😩 When I saw Macho N cover this I knew it was A. Gonna be sick. And B. Absolutely amazing with regards to functionality. Who'd have thought there would be a GameCube renaissance in 2022? Love it.
yesh but it looks crappy, the user interface is pretty bad compared to front ends you can use on a pc
@@kyles8524 I agree the UI is a little dated look, but nothing beats playing on the original systems. I just appreciate how much more faster the games load using GC Loader with digital copies of the games.
@@johnnyreiling5633 I mean I have a GC and I would rather play the same games in 4k then like 480p
@@kyles8524 all a matter of preference my man.
You could always get a Wii U and software mod it. It has Bluetooth support, and can run GameCube and Wii games off of hardware. No hardware mod necessary.
I love how adptable this idea is, it could work on any console with a seperate controller board, so PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2 and Dreamcast could have something exactly like this too, Seeing it on Dreamcast would be amazing, and for PS1 and 2 there is already an official high quality controller like their originals, aka the PS3 controller, it could even support the analog buttons on PS2!
PS2 has a bluetooth adapter already that does support ps3
@@lolcat yeah true, but this is way more elegant to me
The PS3 controller is one of the worst controllers ever lol
I’d appreciate this in the ps2. Hate the feeling of going back to play DBZ Infinite World and having to hold this seemingly tiny controller.
@@alexandermccalla5098 there are BlueRetro adapters for about $20. It's not as clean as this but if you just need a wireless controller solution, you're probably better off going for that
A Great Improvement! I wonder how much more the community will do!
Any gamecube content is the best content. Love it.
The wii remote actually might work well to play GBA games
I want to mod my gamecube so bad!
The NES Online controller has just the right amount of buttons. I use the Raphnet Classic controller adapter and the 8bitdo Classic controller Dongle.
For sure
Tbh i prefer using original gamecube controller or yea id love to use a n64 controller with bluethoot mod but id never use a ps4 or ps5 controller on a modded gamecube. I use my modded 3ds to play snes, nes, gbc games, i use modded ps2 and modded ps3, modded wii , modded wii u.
@@pokiblue5870 The 8bitdo N30 Bluetooth controller has just the right amount of buttons and turbo. The NES Online controller has just the right amount of buttons too but doesn't have turbo. If you are doing GBA. Just saying.
I use to do that with an emulator on my phone. Works well.
Also you can use any controller modding a Wii U without buying extra hardware. And that can do GameCube games off hardware.
I just finished doing the Picoboot mod you made a vid about a few weeks ago. Loving it so far and always looking for ways to soup up the cube
Got something for you. 🎁,

This is perfect for the GameCube I installed into my mom’s minivan for road trips.
Between you and Macho Nacho, i have been inspired to buy a gamecube. Its the only system i regretted selling.
Looks like the Wavebird. I had so much swag with that back then
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Thank you!
I always appreciate the weekend content 💪
with the ODE, CARBY and this controller port the Gamecube is current like again
The Wii u pro controller would be the perfect replacement for the wavebird controller with this mod
CAP
The Switch Pro Controller is the perfect fit atleast it's right & left sticks are in the same position as the gamecube controller idk wtf the wii u pro controller is trying to do with it's sticks at the very top
also the battery life is better on the Switch pro.
@@MonadoBoyFlameRock Reverse CAP. Wii U pro controller’s duel vertical sticks are mad comfortable and it has a built in SNES button d-pad layout thats perfect for the gameboy player
How are you gonna do anything that uses the GameCubes analog triggers. The Wii U and switch pro controllers don’t have analog triggers.
Just saw this at retroworld expo this weekend. It looked super clean and was almost lag free
A good use case for this mod would be using the Switch Snes controller to play GBA games via the gameboy player.
Connecting a Wii Remote and Nunchuk to a Gamecube is crazy.
Who would win in a battle....Glasses Spawnwave or Non Glasses Spawnwave?!?!?!?!
He was more excited about the colored lights than anything else
Man this is really cool upgrading a old system seems awesome
This has been the year of the gamecube! Picoboot mod and this Bluetooth mods make the best console of all time even better! You can play NES SNES N64 GC SeGa games on the gamecube! Very happy with all these mods!
This is amazing, definitely gonna pick this up eventually. Now someone just needs to make a proper bluetooth gamecube controller. There are some that mimic the gamecube design, but they usually don't have analog triggers. And when they do, they don't feel dead-on to how a gamecube controller should feel.
Just get the 8bitdo wireless adapter for GameCube controllers. It works great on my PC.
Bro same thats why i was so damn sad when the Panda controller kickstarter got cancelled :(
Could always go with a Wii U they play GameCube games off hardware and you can use any controller using just a software mod.
@@wargex playng GC games on Wii U is on hardware, not emulated?
@@MaxPrehl exactly that. The architecture is really similar to the Wii's. So it has a better chip in it. Since a Wii U kinda has a Wii in it, and the Wii could play GameCube games, there's just no way to load disks, that's where Nintendont comes in, it's a program used to launch those game, you can either play them off of a list, or you can install them with Nintendont wrapped around it and have it launched like a regular Wii U game, a little similar to virtual console injection games. With another app called bloopair allows you to use Bluetooth controllers for it, and if you want to use wired GC controllers they have adapters for that too. Rest of this comment is copy pasted from reddit. "When playing Wii games, the Wii U still renders those at 480P but upscales them to 720P or 1080P depending on your settings on the Wii U. When in Wii mode, the Wii U basically turns into a Wii and the extra hardware isn't used. The three core processor turns off two cores to become like the single core processor on the Wii allowing for perfect compatibility."
If this thing is nearly 0 latency, someone needs to make real GameCube controllers that run via Bluetooth to replace the wave bird.
They make gamecube controllers for switch that are Bluetooth
@@Pinetree.1 They are gamecube controller shaped. They still lack key features.
@walkerpierce5446 what features on the remotes are they missing? From what I've seen and experienced, they're essentially the same functionality wise.
@@Pinetree.1 No analog Triggers for one.
Why didn't you show the LEDs on the ports? You were like "cool! leds on the ports too! then just didnt show it :/
It's very good - the only thing I'll say, having put one in my GC recently, is that I had to be very careful putting the cover back on and it took several attempts to get it to fit. The extra wiring needs to be carefully routed to avoid issues with the cover not fitting back on well, especially if you have the optical drive rather than whatever it is they show in their video - a gc loader I think - same as what you have in your video.
Oh, and the newer version no longer has an external antenna to worry about, but they haven't updated their intallation instructions so you might initially think they shipped it with a missing part. That is not the case on the V3 - there is no external antenna.
Glad to see you get to review this too. Don't forget to upgrade swiss. 👍
Now I hope 8bitdo makes a controller with the same layout as the gamecube..
With a couple of macro buttons on the top for reset and power
Now hear's the biggest question/test, what kind of input latency does this have?
That would be my biggest concern as well. I have the mayflash dongle to use any 3rd party controller with the Switch, and the input delay sadly makes it not so interesting. An internal bluetooth antenna like this _should_ give better results if it's well implemented though.
PS4 and PS5 controllers have ~5ms. Which is nothing basically since one frame is ~16ms.
Other controllers have more. There’s a chart floating around.
@@Inv8erZlM A chart from LaserBear for this product? Or for those controllers in general? The concern here is how responsive LB's solution is on its own. And yeah like mentioned in my comment, I'd expect it to be on par with current gen consoles' internal antenna.
@@deraile A chart for controllers.
MachNacho has a video about this same product and he mentions the latency.
Here’s
Man all thats left to modernize the GC is a true bluetooth Wave Bird.
10:56 I know the perfect game to play using the Wii Remote, and that's Kirby Air Ride.
The one problem I'd have with this is the way some games use A+Y (Metroid Prime) when trying that on any modern controller is nearly impossible.
Very true. Been emulating some GC games on my steam deck and my brain can't compute lol. I still prefer to hook up my GC to the crt to play games I own. Also going between my switch and steam deck got me mixing up buttons sometimes 😂
The best controllers for GameCube is the original this is kind of dumb maybe when they will be all broken and unobtainable this will make sense
Claw grip would help if you can get use to it.
they announced recently that they are making one for the Dreamcast! Man, the future is now! Between that and the all new upgraded/uppdated Dreamcast VMU called VM2 the future looks hell bright for the Dreamcast!
I feel pretty lucky to have 3 wave birds from my youth
Would be awesome if a future revision of this board would have mounting previsions for the pi pico.
Imagine people of different consoles gathering to play melee and you see a GameCube guy, Xbox one controller, PlayStation 5, and that one guy with the Wii U pro controller.
Since I modded a couple Wii U’s to play gamecube games I don’t plan on getting more GameCubes or modding them. That said I love the scene that keeps pushing forward the evolution of tech that keeps these retro classics going on newer setups and whatnot. Not to mention all the gdemu’s that have crept up makes stuff like disc rot and rarity a non issue, to some extent. At the end I just want to play games, but I do enjoy tinkering now and then.
I did the same hope people realize they can use a mooded Wii U and use bloopair to get their controllers to work. Plus it can do GameCube and Wii.
Not that I don't think this is a cool lil mod but for a bit over 100$ you can just get a Wii U with most of the money going into just the game pad portion.
Hopefully they do this for other systems as well
Next modernization should be a plug and play mod to replace the GameCube motherboard, RAM, and CPU with that of a high end gaming PC.
I'm getting this. The battery holder is a brilliant addition.
Spawn looking great for a video gamer who legit plays the games, does Spawn, and is a dad. Respect/props.
easily one of my top 5 favorite youtubers. period.
I was already doing this with the Raphnet Classic controller adapter and an 8bitdo Classic Controller Dongle. This is way less cluttered though.
I’ve been using the same setup on occasion, but this new device should have less lag if implemented well. The Raphnet-8bitdo configuration is fine for slower paced games, but it’s rather noticeable for me when timing matters.
This is super dope! Downright incredible!!!! Awesome video 🔥🔥🔥
This looks really good. In my opinion it's a game changer. Right now the only system I have is the GameCube. I need to get that mod and the GC loader.
That wireless reset would come in handy when playing fire emblem
Love that you put out new content. thumbs up on a daily! Keep up the good work guys
Right before the pandemic, I picked up a gba cart that lets me use my gameboy micro as a controller. For whatever reason I figured I'd get most use in wii virtual console instead of gc. These days I am thinking of reviving and updating my launch model. I'm curious if I could use the dongle with the gb player .
Awesome video, lot's more hardware modding/repair vidoes please!
I like it, but not enough for the price tag. I already have lights in my controller ports and 2 Wavebirds plus a bunch of corded controllers.
Any idea if this will work with the GameCube ports on a Wii?
Unfortunately not, the Wii would need a soldered in solution
Soft mod a Wii U, the bloopair homebrew app will let you use your Bluetooth controllers. Plus it runs Wii and GC games and has HDMI. No hardware modifications needed.
I would pair it with one of those GC style Switch controllers. A wireless controller with the same form factor
Exactly. I kind of expected him to do this in the video. Kind of disappointing he didn't even mention it
I love the gamecube and I've done a few mods to my gamecube but it's just too easy and sometimes better to just use my pc
Yo I just went back to your 1st videos, you look great man good work!! 👏 🙌 👍 👌
After I installed the Blue Retro adapter it always asks me to set the time & date on the GameCube after I shut it off
Yeah man, mine actually still thinks it’s April 2023. And I’ve been using it since Jan 22. Slowed time down for me.
@@melvinburchett mine keeps taking me further into the future.. it’s 2048
We definitely need something like this for the original Xbox.
How does this handle there not being the extra click when you push the shoulder triggers all the way down?
We definitely need something like this for the og xbox that is plug and play.
And I JUST bought the ASCII keyboard since I still play PSO online on OG hardware with the broadband adapter :D
Can confirm PSO is the only game that supports this. Even the Action Replay software where you can enter custom codes sadly won't recognize it, Datel published a dedicated keyboard for this...
This is a great mod love it looking forward to picking me up one of these wireless is so convenient man the compatibility of this board is great this is long overdue great video
The morning they went on sale and after watching Macho I preordered. Can wait to get it installed!
The GameCube bug has bitten me. I kept my four wavebirds for Wii functionality but after the PicoBoot came out, I got the Japanese Spice GC, a purple one for back up, both DOL-001, got the Kaico Labs Digital to HDMI adapter, modded both with Pico and SD2SP and got the spice gameboy player. I pre-ordered one of these board because my 8bitdo Pro 2 will work awesome with the GB Player. I must admit, GC games on a modded Wii U look better but my nephew and my kids all played Mario Kart Double Dash for the first time and on an original GameCube. They've only ever known Wii, Wii U, 3DS and Switch Mario Karts.
I know there's not as much nostalgia around the OG Xbox, but with the system's basic capabilities, built in HDD, & even support for some HD games, I'm surprised we don't see me more crazy mods for it.
Granted, back in its own time there were plenty. People cracking the system & uploading the full NES/SNES library onto the HDD was great too.
If it makes you feel any better insignia is rebuilding the old Xbox Live service.
That's a pretty crazy mod.
tbh I'm just getting into emus/emuing and I'm still blown away at playing old GCN games in HD. Like i've never seen Metroid Prime look so good. I'm not even tempted to do anything more bc like... I'm good lol
I like the fact it's an easy mod that has a low barrier of entry... but I have 5 wavebird controllers, so I'm good.
Dam bro sell me one
The most amazing console to mod right now is the GameCube. Picking one up that has a broken disc drive is the way to go. They're EASY to mod, and you don't even need the disc drive. Doing the Pico mod and installing the SD2SP2 adapter makes the console worth buying as most GameCube games are around 1GB. I have over 3,000 games on my GameCube's MicroSD card. That includes most NES, SNES, N64, GameBoy, and GameBoy Advance games released in the west with a few patched Japan-only released titles. 70 of those games are GameCube games. A modded GameCube is a must for ANY Nintendo fan.
GameCube is cute piece of tech, sadly it is irrelevant novadays as Wii is cheaper on used marked and can do everything + much more.
great video Jon, I might have to try this mod
OMG!!! I didn't even finish watching the video. I jumped straight to the link in discription and placed my pre-order. Can't wait till it ships out. I have been looking for an adapter that will let me use a USB/Bluetooth controller on GameCube for forever now. This is awesome
Hi, the RetroRosetta unit is shipping right now if you're just looking for the official BlueRetro controller functionality
Don't know if it was suggested but maybe the wii-mote might be slightly more functional if you plug in the nunchuck with it
Ah yes a video from FUTURE (2082)
I hope it can get rumble later on, also I wonder how the wii classic controller plugged into the wii remote would do.
I was wondering if the nunchuk would work as well
Hey Mr. Wave, quick question for you. I’m trying to find a good HDMI solution for my GameCube and PS2. What’s your recommendation? I’m looking at Kaico upscalers right now
Go with that brand and I don’t think you will be disappointed
Personally having a great time with the GC using Carby and the mClassic. Games like Metroid Prime and 1080: Avalanche clean up really well with it on, and it can be turned off when using the GB Player (my preference).
Thanks for the work man👍
Picked up an old GC from my mum's house a few weeks ago that the laser had burned out on so I could use it to get into modding. Already got a Pico ready to drop in but looks like things are gonna be getting expensive in the near future with SD loaders and bluetooth adapters!
Wow that's amazing, btw what's your set up for the graphics? I never understood all those filter and numbers that they mentioned in the graphics configuration 😅
It’s great as an option but nothing beats the GC controller for GC games, the button layout is spot on!
If only 8bit do would have a kit for GameCube controllers like they do for the n64 ones. That kit is great.
You could sync up a Switch Wireless GameCube controller to this.
I might do this for GameCube in a secondary room where I don't want to bring my wave birds up
Are you able to turn off and start up the console by using a Wavebird? Because I personally use Wavebirds for all 4 of my controllers, but being able to turn on the console without having to get up sounds awesome
Impressive mod. I'd look into getting one at some point
This is amazing however I’m really hoping we get GameCube switch online this year since the games are way too expensive these days and having all major GameCube games on the go would be amazing!
its criminal that nintendo hasnt added gamecube support on their consoles since the Wii.
maybe at least the first party ones are expensive but you can find copies of sonic and resident evil for a decent price
@@XRelays the switch has no disc drive
I pre-ordered this as soon as I saw it. I'm so excited!
Gamecube... never dies. As it should be
That Frankensteinass GameCube lol. Got every addon and upgrade. It's getting pretty funny now
It was a bit of a transition, but I am now completely acclimated to John without glasses.
I can't help but think you'll eventually have a ship of Theseus situation with these gamecube mods.
But seriously, all these upgrades for the GameCube are great. It makes me wish I still had my old Gamecube so I could have modded it.
Pick one up that has a broken drive. They're EASY to mod as you don't even need the disc drive. Doing the Pico mod and installing the SD2SP2 adapter makes the console worth buying as most GameCube games are around 1GB. I have over 3,000 games on my GameCube's MicroSD card. @@WardenOfTerra I might do that. How much do they typically go for with a broken drive?
What a time to be alive! This is really cool. I’ve done the gc loader mod to a GameCube I thought was broken, turns out is was just European and have no idea how it ended up at a flea market in Alabama. This new mod is a little pricey but I’ll definitely give it a shot once I save up some money
I have a GameCube and this does look interesting to try
Already pre ordered one of these from watching Tito’s video, can’t wait to get this bad boy in and set it up.
Ps. The GC is the Goat.
OMG I need this so bad. I even have the purple PS5 controller to go with it. Love that the Gamecube is still relevant. Well at least to us it is. haha
sold!
Aw out of stock.
Who makes the digital to HDMI adapter? Is it affordable?
It would be cool if they could somehow figure out a way to make the PS5 controller use it's adaptive triggers to sort of imitate the button press you get on a real gamecube controller when tou push the trigger all the way down.
esp32+raspberry pi+ memory card mod, it was the best experience modding any console.
The Wavebird Controller has no Rumble function! Is the Rumble working with this Bluetooth Mod?
I have a Power A GameCube controller for Switch that I love. That would be my pick for this.
You should definitely update your Swiss, makes audio playback better.
This mod is great but it's a bit too expensive
I am hoping that now with the release of the pico W that we will see an open source all in one solution
once the pico W gets the bluetooth support implemented , one pico W board could most likely handle pico boot and the controller port LED mod as well as the bluetooth mod once pico W gets bluetooth support working
a cheaper option could be to use the original GC controller port board but with a ribbon cable passthrough board for a solderless (except for the connections to the pico W board itself) option if you only want to solder to the pico W and not solder to the controller port board, I mean assuming that the needed connections for the BT mod all go through the ribbon cable for the controller port board
I will just wait this one out for now
it's already "opensource", called BlueRetro. This guy just made a custom PCB so that it is plug and play. You can do it on your own using esp32 dev board for less than 10$
It's the appropriate price lol
@@saddlesore_adventures Oh ok I knew it uses the ESP32 but didn't know it was open source , what language is it coded in ?
I am sure it could be adapted to the RP2040 , but the pico W has not to my knowledge implemented the support for the onlboard bluetooth yet
if there is enough resources on the pico W then the code for pico boot and the BT mod could be combined assuming they are both coded in the same language otherwise someone would have to convert the code for one of the projects before combining it obviously
if all the connections need for the bluetooth mod go through the ribbon cable then a passthrough board for the ribbon cable would be a lot cheaper option for people who don' want o solder or want o keep their GC stock as possible
Honestly $95 isn’t bad. Sure you can buy the supplies to do this to your own board for around $50. But I think your overlooking the fact that this is plug and play. The time it would take you to accomplish the battery, led, and bluretro mods alone would be worth the extra $50. The added macro controls are a huge bonus. Plus you could unplug this and transfer it into another GameCube if yours dies. I would prefer an all in one Pico solution as well but honestly this will work great until that day comes.
@@stephenshelottiii3272 yeah all I am saying is that do we really need a full GC controller port board replacement for this?
i mean a ribbon cable passthrough board would be just as easy of an install , looks like there are no IC's on the controller port board so I assume all needed connection could be made with simple ribbon cablepassthrough and look like there would be plenty of room inside the GC for that, a kit that comes with 5 RGB LED's or % addressable LED's and and the ribbon cable passthrough board would at lower price point would honestly be a much more attractive option to me . it just seems unessecary to me to replace the whole board, inserting the LED's into the controller ports and under the power light window is trivial ,
it's impressive indeed, Also does the wii need some kind of version produced for the GameCube portion or can you do that via homebrew?
Nice now do it for the Dreamcast and we're talking!
