The clip ended abruptly because you watched the pirated rather than the official video on Diana's channel. About half of reactors do - it has a lot of views, to be fair, but it's not the official one (which has the judge commentary). I heard "men", btw ;) Thank you for your analysis. Diana Ankudinova is an astounding talent. Yes, they were only given a maximum of 3 minutes for each performance on this show. Diana does not speak English but she has started learning it this last year or two. Her native tongue is Russian.

This is without a doubt the absolute truth!!!
But for the best impression it is very important to choose the right performance/video from the show You are Super.
The best video in my opinion is the re-upload on the "Kwastas Vagias" channel
      ua-cam.com/video/fEcvVINA304/v-deo.html
For me this is a "MASTERPIECE of vocal and performance art" for all time and still my top 1 performance/video by Diana and I believe it is almost impossible to beat.
      All the best and greetings from Germany. 🌻 🌻 🌻 🌻 🌻

😄 Diana is Russian and her native language is the Russian. Our language sounds are absolutely different. The MAN and MEN for us are the same or very close 😀 We can skip some sounds when speak and this circumstance changes nothing. Russian language is not so formal like English. We can change the order of words and this way make stronger their meaning. Did you try to sing on other language? Italian? Or French? Russian opera singers learn foreign languages 🙂. Diana is 3nd year student but her French is not bad, her Arabian makes happy Arabian men. Spanish speaking people give her the note "excellent". Do you sing Russian opera? Thanks for reaction and smile 👍

I have read that Diana doesn't speak English, but sings in English phonetically. If this is true, then I am not sure that whether or not she is saying men or man would have that much significance or intention. If any Russian folks read this and know for sure, is it correct that she sings English phonetically, and doesn't speak the language? Thanks.

Swedish speaker here. I definitively heard "men", but it was close to "man". I believe it's a lot to do with native tongue because there are so many sounds in human languages. But the critique is helpful nonetheless if Diana is aiming at getting even better at what she does. The worst one may do to somebody who is apparently making a huge effort in a field, is to NOT correct even small errors, because the person with high aim and high hopes may be deceived into believing all is well when there is a margin to work on. Sometimes it's not nice to be "nice".

  • @nickschweninger9398

Her native language is Russian, which makes this so much more incredible because the Russian language does not have a “w” sound. The way that she so perfectly forms it in a way that seems so natural is amazing, because I couldn’t make a proper “w” Sound for over a year after learning English, even at a young age. Russian also has many loopholes for pronunciation, which explains the men/man part, however it is also just a part of her deeper almost covered sounding voice.

Diana is native russian speaker. In russian language we don't pay much attention to pronunciation. Our vowels don't cross each other. These 2 vowels (men/man) sound similar for us.

But I'm no professionnal and that interpretation was absolute perfection to my ears! Diana was 18 in this performance from last September 2021 on Russian TV. This show was more of a variety singing show than a competition. No judges per se since the singers all ranked themselves from best to least best each week for two months as they had to sing in different genres each week to keep them out of their comfort zones. Diana was easily the youngest and least established singer of the group but had the highest point total at the end. Enjoyed your thoughts on this.

Greetings from Scotland! Well that was a fascinating analysis! You pinpointed a few things that I have not noticed before. The pronunciation is due to the fact that she didn't have much time to prepare the performance beforehand, the song was allocated to her by the show/contest organisers and the real biggie - she doesn't really speak English! She is a native of Eastern Russia and speaks Russian normally but she is learning and she speaks much more and much better English than she used to. Diana usually listens to the foreign language song a couple of times, then sings it a couple of times before she basically has it in place. She's a lightening fast learner! She has sung in *7 languages, Russian, English, French, Spanish, German, Ukrainian and Arabic!!!* SO FAR! 😊
What next? Hmm, I'd like your opinion on something new and modern from Diana, an original song. This may be outside your normal listening but I am interested in your reaction. "Falling like a waterfall" lyric video only I'm afraid but you might love her new look! :-

I hear men rather than man🤷🏼 but she is Russian and had to work with a speech pathologist as a young girl so perhaps you’re right? Her back story is quite tragic and speaks to her strength as a person and also likely plays into her pronunciation. I encourage you to read about her story.
    Thanks for the reaction.

Diana is Russian. She grew up in Arsenyev, Tolyatti and Moscow. She is studying English at the Russian Institute of Theater Arts (GITIS) in Moscow. She has said she has not planned foreign concerts because she does not speak English well enough yet to engage with an English speaking audience. You may have noticed at the very beginning of her Wicked Game video that she pronounced the W as V as she sang "The Vorld is on fire" when she was 15 years old. This is the normal Slavic pronunciation of the letter W. She doesn't do that now when she sings in English. That's not by chance. She worked on it. But whether she sings "World" or "Vorld", or "Men" or "Man", I don't care. I just want to hear her sing every day.
It's unfortunate that you chose this stolen, clipped video from the pirate Club Broccoli channel. The original is on Diana's channel with the other singers'/judges' comments. ua-cam.com/video/M-znD6QKbrg/v-deo.html

She didn't say "man" at all, it was "men", a more Americanized pronunciation. Now I'm a little nitpicky on your hearing. :)
Pretty damn good for someone who doesn't speak English huh? I understand operaric types naturally nitpick (Maggie Renee in particular), but that's natural for an opera singer to do. They literally have perfection in diction throttled into them, everything must be phonetically perfect.
You need to understand, Diana isn't an opera singer. She dislikes opera very much, as it robs all creative freedom and she is naturally very creative. One day she may have time for an English tutor, which I sincerely hope she does. It will improve her pronunciation dramatically. Until then I just enjoy her performances no matter the language it is in, especially Russian.
And as others have said, you chose the pirated version to react to. Try getting them directly from Diana's channel, most are even subtitled.
Great insights btw. Thank you. :)

Thanks for taking the time to do a detailed review of this performance by Diana. This show (ShowMaskGoOn) produced a live studio performance by 9 artists each week for 9 weeks. Very condensed production schedule and not very much time for the artists to prepare. Second language issues certainly are more likely with this type of production schedule. This show produced some awesome performances by Diana worth reacting to ("The Crow," "The Way," "Personal Jesus," and others). Also, when she was 14 and 15 she was on another contest show called "You are Super" for disadvantaged youth. She won both years on that show (You already reacted to "Wicked Game" from that show). She sings/tells a story of one of the most memorable live performances you'll ever see of a Russian folk song "Rechenka" (The River) ua-cam.com/video/fEcvVINA304/v-deo.html and my favorite rendition of a French cover of Indila's "Derniere Danse" (Last Dance) ua-cam.com/video/PeoS3Kw42sA/v-deo.html and a Rag and Bone man's cover of "Human" ua-cam.com/video/erQLW2Z2i8w/v-deo.html among others. All showcase some of the best live stage performances from anyone out there and all the more remarkable because she was so young. She recently released her first totally written and composed song in a mood video version at 19 years old called "Revelation" which is stellar. ua-cam.com/video/ThA05huLEJ8/v-deo.html Your reaction to Diana is always a treat. PLEASE continue this journey in the order which makes most sense to you. I'll be watching for any of these with anticipation!

    Great analysis.
In the word Men as much as i tried i always heard Men not Man, on the words can't and love though you are right she did not pronounced them correctly but let us not forget that she is 18 years old here and English is not her first or even second language and also if you take in to account the time she spent in the orphanage and in therapy for he speech problems she did not had much time to study the language so her Russian accent still gets in the way.
Personally i really don't mind, i did not even payed attention to it until you mentioned this and i will even add that i think accents make a language way more interesting, i love them.
In an interview after this show she said that she started to study English though so everything will be fine in the future.
On your comment about the form of the mouth when singing high notes, i think that she did this because the performance demanded it, in other performances like "take on me" by A-HA, "Feeling good" by Nina Simon or even in her own song "Revelation" and many others she shows that she can reach up there with her mouth barely open.
If you want a recommendation i would suggest either

She is perfect to us, and when she sings in other Languages we can't under anything anyway, but it's great to us. If you listen to music that closely, then your not having Fun with it. The original video also has all the judges commentaries. There are subtitles available and very much worth a listen. The fellow standing hands held up, is a very well known opera singer and his wife as well. What he has to offer was great. All the contestants are the judges and all have long published music. This seemed more a debutante occasion for Diana seeing how well she was recieved by her audience and judges. And that was the opening number for nine episodes where we could watch diana progress through many genres and how well she could apply that very adept contralto. She has a gift in vocalizing vowels creating so much color a d texture. Her low notes make her sound a tactile moment too. Be sure to listen to this on big speakers rrather loud. Her polyphonic edge through speakers makes her voice a full body experience, especially those last two lines and the plaintive yodel cry in Rechenka goes through you too. This is truly a voice to study. It never diminishes in brilliance and emotion. Thank you for another great reaction.

I hear 'men' rather than 'man'. I thought your pointing it out might result in me now hearing 'man', but no, still 'men'. I am from the UK btw. Don't know if that affects anything.
Your point about pronunciation is well made however. You're not the first opera singer-reactor to address it. I assume correct pronunciation of a phonetically learned foreign song is treated with greater rigor in the opera houses than in the world of pop singers.
When Diana first sang 'Human' at age 15 I didn't know the song and could barely understand any of the verses. She still sings the song and is now much clearer.

There are hundreds of covers of this song and few touch me and come close to Elvis. Diana makes her own song out of it.
Diana, also called goosebumps queen, sang the cover of the cover of the song by Elvis Presley in the first episode of the competition 'Шоумаскгоон' (ShowMaskGoOn). This was Diana's first adult competition in November 2021. She was the youngest competitor (aged 18) and wowed contestants and spectators with her first song.
Rules: 9 winners of the previous shows 'The Mask', 'Superstar' and 'You are Super' took part in this new format and had to sing in 9 categories: folk hit, song at the end of the 20th century, Soviet song, pop hit, song your choice, new music, song from cartoon or film, rock hit, Grammy
The man who jumps up is the world famous opera singer Yusif Eyvazov. He is also the husband of the world famous opera singer Anna Netrebko. He is the guest of honor and awards 9 points. Each episode has a new guest of honor.
The competitors have to assess each other and have praised Diana to the skies. They said of their performance: 'Diana has no competition on the show - she amazes with her talent - it's impossible to tear yourself away from her - you want to listen endlessly, they're in tears and they're even afraid to blink' .
8 participants (Diana cannot score herself) gave Diana the highest score (9). She won the first episode... and later won the contest.

I hear "men". She doesn't speak English. I believe Russian is her only spoken language. I think it's way too much to expect all those subtle English differences here. You've gotten the chopped video version and missed the comment section.
Everyone on the show sings, but one of the judges is special. The one who most vividly appreciated Diana's voice. The one who was standing listening to the song. He is an opera singer who is considered one of the best voices in the world. His name is Yusuf Eyvazov. He is a dramatic tenor, the husband of the great opera star of our time, Anna Netrebko. Yusuf is welcome at all the best opera venues in the world, where the best of the best voices of the world sing, on such stages as the Mariinsky Theater, the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, the Vienna State Opera, the Bolshoi Theater, the Paris National Opera and others. Who, if not he, can appreciate the voice? And he, at the end of Diana's performance, was crying. It's worth a lot. This is worth more than the opinions of millions of reactors and judges.
This episode's guest star Yusif Eyvazov said:
"You know I'm struggling to articulate what I've felt. I've heard many music in my life,
I sing along all over the world. I have seen a lot of concert halls and people, orchestra and
    musicians....
....This girl got just an incredible talent hidden inside, and may God give that this talent
gets into good hands, people who can do with it what she deserves in the future which Diana herself
    deserves."
One video of Diana's, in my sight, is a total masterpiece the like of which I don't remember ever seeing before in my long life. It's a must see for anyone that loves singing with unending emotion. The background of the song is essential to know. The title of the song is "Ornery (or "Fastidious" or "Finicky") Horses". The song has nothing to do with horses in reality - the horses are being used as a metaphor for life. The author of song is begging the horses to slow down (he is aware he is approaching death), but, at the same time he is whipping them along (his chaotic lifestyle) - he knows that his lifestyle is taking him to an early death, however, he is unable to change it.....the composer of the song, Vladimir Vysotsky, was a singer-songwriter, poet, and actor as well as an alcoholic & drug addict and died in 1980 at the age of 42. ua-cam.com/video/lu8iW9BcWmY/v-deo.html . Subtitles are a must for Diana's words before and after the song.

FYI-The man who stood up is a famous male singer from one of the Stan countries. He is married to the premier soprano in Russia. You listened to a shortened clip and it is available on her channel. She does do the vibrato on the last note. She tends to add vibrato when it fits in the drama. SHe seems to like the clarity of her non vibrato. Her most recent song The Day You because she is in her soprano register most the time. She gets into the sixth octave and she makes some obvious choices in using her vibrato. The are two versions of the song. One is as a soloist. THe other is as a duet with Brandon Stone, a super star in Russia. It is exceptional as a duet. She wrote the lyrics and it is a love song for her adopted mother who save her life.

Great video with interesting, unique analysis as always, and thanks for returning to Diana. I'm not 100% sure of the premise of this show, but I believe everyone in that tiered stand is a singer who takes their turn performing. I think the exception to this is the guy who stood up and looked emotional. I want to say he's a music producer and a guest on the show, but I could easily be wrong.

The chap who stood up is an opera singer himself - Yusif Eyvazov,, who is married to the soprano Anna Netrebko. You're correct about the people in the stand, they're all (apart from Yusif, who was a one time guest) singers on the show - when not singing, Diana would be seated in the stand.

    Hello from France
    Great reaction!
She's Russian, phonems in this language are totally different than in English.
It was a new song for her there was short rehearsals for this show and she didn't learn good English very well in school because she nerver worked with native English speakers
This performance is inspired by this Tommee Profitt's minor key version (Dark version) ua-cam.com/video/PDboeQfAsww/v-deo.html but the power of Diana's voice definitely adds another dimension.
    About this Show:
The man who stood up during the performance is Yusif Eyvazov (www.operadeparis.fr/en/artists/yusif-eyvazov) a famous tenor born in Azerbaidjan, he said after during the comments that he never had heard a voice like Diana's...
Hearing Diana while being in the same room as her is an experience hard to forget according to friends who have seen her in concert. she makes you vibrate to the bones! Some have told me that it feels like she's singing inside you, in your own head ....
Could you please react too to The Crow ("Ворона") - Диана Анкудинова in "Rock hit" category. Many people think this is Diana's one of the best performance to date. She managed in 3 minutes to make a demonstration (without being ostentatious) of all her vocal possibilities and skills.
Diana was currently participating in a very ambitious NTV show "ShowMaskGoon" ("Шоумаскгоон") shot in Mosfilms studios with Virtual Reality sets. The sound was recorded live.
Why "ShowMaskGoon"?: The NTV channel produces 3 other singing competition shows (You are Super ", The Mask" and "SuperStar") the winners of these three shows participate in "ShowMaskGoon which is a kind of superfinal which premiered this year (" Mask "because of the second one)
The principle was as follows: there was 9 permanent participants who are both judges and competitors. Everyone had to perform in 9 predefined styles or categories, changing each time in each of the 9 parts of the show. It was very interesting because the candidates had to get out of their usual repertoire. To the 9 judges / candidates is added a different guest each week who also votes, because the artist who is on stage does not vote. They all have points from 2 to 9 to be distributed according to their assessment of the performance.
    The 9 categories were:
"Song from a movie or cartoon"
    "Rock hit"
    "New music"
"Song of the late twentieth century"
    "People are moved" (moving song)
    "Soviet song"
    "Pop hit"
    "Grammy"
    "Song of your choice"

    About Diana
I wrote this presentation to help the new reactors:
(I am not a professional but I have compiled information found on Diana's official website, in interviews and in reactions from singers and musicians)
Diana is an unique contralto (dramatic contralto) her comfort range is C3-C6 but in constant evolution. Diana uses many vocal techniques rarely used in pop music (like overtones, yodel, and some from lyric chant....). The one that seems to amaze people the most is multitonal (polyphonic) voice. The root notes are enriched with powerful harmonics which can give the impression that there are several overlapping voices or an artificial effect which gives this result.
This technique is used in Slavic folk music artists, like Pelageya, the Russian folk diva. I cannot tell you exactly how these artists achieve this result, I was just told that it is linked to the simultaneous use of the different resonators of the human body and that such a mastery of the voice and of the breath with such a fluidity requires years of work, Diana has been singing on stage and has been taking singing and performing arts lessons since the age of 6!
She has become famous in the broadcast "You're Great!" ("You are Super"), a song contest reserved for children who have had a difficult start in life. This is the case of Diana who was mistreated and ended up in an orphanage at 3 years old.
In her shows, Diana participates in the direction, direction and arrangements of her performances. She is a complete artist.
In addition, until the recent past her costumes were often designed and sewn by her mother and grandmother since she was 5.
I enclose a biography and some links for the next reactions. ;-D

I dont hear man there, now I hear her sing constantly so I tried not to expect anything when relistening. I dont think she speaks english but she does rather well when singing it. Another thing, this presentation was new tech with the audience seeing the same visuals and sound expanded around the room, that process could also be behind some of the smoothed out sounds. I will suggest another performnce on this same platform where I could pick out some peculiarites in her English. That might really be enough for you to decide if its off, artistic choice or other. That song is 'Twist in my sobriety'. It was interesting how you pointed out the nice slow vibato settling into the note. Now I notice everytime

Hi Jess, Diana is Russian oh English is not her first obviously. She also sings in several other languages. I was disappointed in your reaction you were more critical than you were positive about the performance. This website absolutely outstanding performance by Diana. It was a dark room done in minor key. Also a little history about Danna she was severely abused by her birth mother she was beaten she even tried to drown her I’m more than one occasion. He’s 3 1/2 she was thrown out on the street and Haritha Russia in the winter time. And when they found her they realize she had been eaten and had a broken collarbone. She ended up in a Russian orphanage She was adopted by a therapist who worked at the Refridge at age 5 that was so severely traumatized at her birth mother she was unable to can you go because she stuttered and stammered unable to speak in a sentence. someone suggested that they give her voice lessons that it might help her to learn how to talk and that is where they discovered her talent. I hope this gives you a little better understanding of her possibly appreciate her abilities little more. please react to Diana performing,

I've been waiting so patiently for you to get around to this one.
Some people hear more of an /ɜ/ vowel. "Wise mɜrn". I'm not sure anymore what I hear now.
I'm fairly certain some of her consonant distortion is the result of something called High Arched Palate. Which would also contribute to her unusually dark timbre as well. I hear it in her Russian when she speaks, but also hear it when she sings in Spanish as well. She doesn't speak English but her singing diction has gotten quite good over the past few years.
The show itself, although a competition, was a format never done before. The judges were also the singers, plus one guest professional. The Guest on this day was Anna Netrebko's husband Yusif Eyvazov (who is also a trained singer). They'd each vote for each other with a point system at the end, and the daily winner would sing an encore performance to show everyone off. Was a pretty cool show with a lot of fantastic songs and performances. A lot of entertaining banter, too.
I think Diana is at her best in small venues like the Wood Grouse Nest. You get to see the less dramatic side of her, and whoever they have mixing the audio at that venue does a great job of capturing the full harmonics of her voice. So harmonically rich.

Why the most angry comments from opera singers? Envy to the vocals, to the unique timbre? Diana showed another reading of the most famous song that the whole world knows. Here's what to discuss! Instead of assessing the holistic image of the song, what Diana wanted to say in this song to us, the listeners, they arrange an analysis of pronunciation in English, while not being able to correctly pronounce the name "Diana Ankudinova" in Russian. I remember this singer when she laughed evilly more than a year ago at Diana's performance of the song "Wicked Game", considering all Diana's vocals to be computer processed, stating that a teenager cannot sing like that!

What you say is not true. Maybe the translation didn't work well. She was fascinated by Diana's voice and immediately recognized that she has a polyphonic undertone in her voice. She explained how it works and wished she could look inside her voice box.

As a Russian guy I always doubt my pronunciation when I say man/men or woman/women or other similar words in English. We have only one æ (Э) letter/sound in our language, so man/men sounds pretty much the same for our ears 🙄

I hear "men" in first phrase, just at a low frequency and with a bit of accent. Listen to more of her, she usually phrases correctly but of course we hear the russian accent sometimes. I do agree with the implied idea that with time and study her english will improve and that will add to the delivery of the songs as she gets closer to western phrasing.

Nice reaction to Diana. I think the pronunciation comments you had were just an accent of a 17 year old native Russian speaker.. Great comments on her tone & control of her voice & use of vibrato. For more of her performances watch

Diana is still young & I once read, about 3 years ago that she was found at 2 & a half yrs old on the side of the street in Russia, spasely clothed & then placed in an Orphanage by the very relatives that found her. They told the Orphange Diana was unable to talk, so they said she was dumb therefore they choose to leave her there. (Boy has this young girl has come a long way!)
[I do hear the words that aren't pronounced quite right like yourself. When I first heard this song I was saying to myself, I'd wish someone had really indicated the necessity of pronouncing "men"/"man" & the "v" sound with the word "Love", to Diana .
All I can say is, one thing is for sure, when "Diana" ever performs this song again, she's gonna "nail" it!
(Overall, Diana is a very talented & gifted young woman & I am so happy for her and all who love and know her too.) TY for your reaction/Analysis. 😁🥰🎼🎙🎶🎤🎧
