- The Espada are some of Bleach's best and most popular villains, but that doesn't mean they're perfect. A few months ago we looked at what I believed to be the one big problem with the Sternritter, so I thought it fair to put the Espada under that same scrutiny. Let's look at Kubo's one mistake when writing these otherwise legendary antagonists.

the smaller espadas stole attention from the bigger ones, in the end hype was gone
Just more content, some got almost no backstory.
I think the story would have been better if a few other Soul Reapers had entered with Rukia and Renji and were actually killed off, this would have changed the story completely.

True. Stark being number 1 in all I can see how he can beat barrigan he being strong enough to kill with pressure alone near unlimited cero shots. The one thing I don't get is how yammi could kill barrigan. Being a clumping mass doesn't really do anything.
Seriously, he brings back Luppi but not Starrk.
Not only would it be badass to see them work together because of how similar their personalities are but it would be really cool to see how much stronger staark would be after the time skip. Personally with shunsui being my favorite character in the series and staark being my favorite espada I probably would have cried from happiness reading the chapters with them together lol
I wish one of the Espada had pointed out to the shinigami that the espada’s mere existence is proof of their failure in their duty. Since the arancarr are made up of hundreds or thousands of hollows, each was a soul of a human they failed to save from becoming a hollow.
Thats actually quite intelligent, I feel like that shouldve been Zommari's role. He's my least favorite espada, simply because he wasnt expanded upon very well. But during his fight with byakuya he did bring up some questions regarding the morality of the Shinigami, if he was the one to tell them that Hollows HAVE to eat humans because the reapers failed to save them, he would've been made more interesting and this idea couldve been cemented.
Not true in can’t fear your own world the O squad captain explains that a balance must always exist between all 3 realms so a certain number of hollows must always exist. Especially power ones like the espada. That’s why the captain spared Haribel

Kubo rarely even uses color, and yet every character looks so different, cool, simply put, saying that bleachs art is bad is simply absurd.

Of the “Big 3” Kubo is clearly the best artist. And that’s saying a ton considering who the other 2 are. He’s just incredible, especially in a weekly format
yes. Bleach's art is top tier. But the animation Pierrot give it doesn't really made an impression to me.

Byakuya vs Zommari is actually hilarious in its own way. I like that the entire time they are both trying to kill each other using as little power as possible (because of arrogance) while constantly trying to one up each other.
Zommari did such a good job that I really struggle to remember him. Especially after Pepe, who has a similar skill but far more powerful and useful.
I actually just re-read the manga and I feel Byakuya was baiting him. After his battle with Ichigo, Byakuya learnt humility. During the entire battle, he kept touching Zommari's psychologial weaknesses, never underestimating him, not even once. Every single move Byakuya made was pertinent. He supposedly looked down upon Zommari, but he used Bakudo with precision and went Bankai the moment he found his weakness. It's all very subtle writing and I love it.
Bad writting.
I think the absolute biggest missed opportunity when it came to the Arrancar was that Kubo never explored the fact that they were all at one point, human. It's what stopped hollows from being a generic monster, their was always that unnerve that underneath that monstrous mask, their was a human face in pain from having lost its human heart (the anime even makes the hollow howl sound like a combination of a bellowing beast and a human cry of agony, brilliant sound design). There could have been this whole cult theme to the Arrancar arc, Aizen presenting himself as a false God by "returning" these hollows to mock human forms, telling them that soul society is evil because not only did they fail to prevent the hundreds of souls that each Arrancar is comprised of from becoming a hollow, the soul reapers never exercised these hollows and let it get to the point that they became Menos. All this is true and makes the soul society a further grey area, making the story more compelling, but ultimamtly Aizen is still being the main villain as he is not cleansing the hollows either, only prolonging there suffering to further his goals.
Hell, I honestly think Kubo forgot that Hollows were humans. I found it weird that Ichigo refused to kill them whenever he fought them, as he, wielding a Zanpakuto, not only would have freed the main soul that made up Arrancars personality, but the hundreds of souls that were backing it up ( or send them to Hell, if they were particularly bad enough in life ).

At the start when Ulquiorra returns from Karakura and crushes his eye so everyone can see what he saw there was an ominous sense of mystery about them that I wish Kubo kept up until the end

Not to deny what you're saying but Kubo did try to do it with the Aspect of Death Also they wouldn't really remember much from their human life.

I think that there were some Espada Like Coyote Starkk and Harribel who were underutilized
Don't forget nel, he built her up but she never really did anything
#1, #2 and #3 were hyped up only to fall short. consistency where the hype meets the delivery of the action.
Almost all of them were underutilized in my opinion, bar maybe Grimmjow and Ulquiorra who were obviously the sort of 'fan-favourite' espada, plus Yammy who for some reason got a lot of action. But yes especially the top 3 you'd imagine would have been afforded a lot more development.

Right!! As the 3 strongest, it would make sense to give them more attention and yet… they almost got the least amount 🙄
Stark essentially losing to a shikai was the biggest wtf moment. Granted, Kyoraku was, at the time, in the top 3 as far as captains were concerned & probably showcased the most intriguing shikai there is, but still... it was such a let down.
Considering how overcrowded the Bleach Universe is.. It would have even been beneficial for some of the Captains to die and give other characters a moment to shine..
Ulquiorra is easily my favorite. He's nearly the only Espada that chooses his opponents mind as the battlefield. Him having that common trait with Aizen I imagine is why he appeared to be the closest to Aizens side. Even Ulquiorra taking a really long time to walk the stairs when finding Ichigo left a strong impression on me about his character. Ichigo couldn't be blamed for assuming he was the number 1 at first.
Technically speaking he pretty much was the number one because he had a second transformation and could instantly regenerate his wounds and on top of that could throw literal nukes. Imagine if any of the top 3 espadas went against vasto lorde ichigo and how badly that would have ended for all of them except for barragan who literally only lost because of bull shit to begin with.
Edit: Ichigo wasn't a vasto lorde he was just a hollow but the point still stands that Ulq put up a pretty good fight against him while the others would just get obliterated except for barragan due to his over powered as hell hax and only being beaten by literal plot hole bull shit.

The fact that he defeated Ichigo thrice and even killed him at one point. Makes him one of my favorite characters. We see from grimmjow that the Espada are capable of becoming way stronger if given the time to develop. So imagine if ulquiorra was still alive, how strong he'd be.
My only change would be for Coyote Stark to live and become the “Alucard” of Soul Society! He would have been perfect against Lillibarro after his fall from the fight with Shunsui/Nanao

Eh, wouldn't be a good idea because those who are weak that get close to him will just die. He kinda needed to die tbh.
@@Delimon007 nah not really as the captains of gotei aren't killing there subordinates just by their presence and kenpachi and the head captain imo is stronger than Stark especially in they bankai so again Stark power level wouldn't be a big deal and plus they cud just give an eyepatch or tool like kenpachi eyepatch and reduce his powers until he would wanna go all out. I personally wanted to know if lilynette would come back or need mayuri to help save her but kubo killed them permanently before we cud see them go off because stark got depressed.
Aaroniero having 33,000 abilities, and yet we only see 3 of them.
To be fair, the abilities we do know of are pretty strong.
Destroying a Zanpakuto on contact (shutting a Shinigami off from their primary combat style), and possessing the body of a host and eating it from the inside out. Knowledge of Shinigami combat styles, and the ability to use them as well (in as far as Kaien was able to use, at the least).
Same with all for one lol
Don't forget his 4th ability. Being so stupid he stands and watches his opponent kill him instead of dodging.
@@alphawolf7417 Zanpakutos aren't normally able to be reformed like that without recalling your swords name at least in shikai, a bankia blade breaking needs to be reforged according to the royal guard.
@@SeviathTheHumanDrago still when dealing with people who can shoot magic or use hidden sword abilities I wouldn't just stand and watch what my enemy was doing even if they were hurt.
i really hated the fact that baragan who destroyed an entire building in an instant. Didn't even try to finish what his underlings started, which was destroy the pillars.
The epitome of this is Hitsugaya "losing" against Luppi(interim/fake Espada) then basically winning against fucking Haribel #3.

I feel like Grimmjow, Ulquiorra, and Nnoitora are the only ones who truly showcased the strength of the Espada, yeah they were defeated but it wasn't an easy defeat at all. I think Harribel, Starrk, and Aaroniero got the short end of the stick.
Edit: I keep forgetting that Zommari exists... that says a lot.
You can say Zaraki struggled but the literal moment he decided he might die be used two f**king hands and swung his sword ONCE and instantly won.
Aaroniero is supposed to be weak though, not Rukia level, but still, he only died bc wanted to brag.
He's probably not much stronger than Grimmjow's Fraccion, the two that fought Hitsugaya and Ikakku.

@@MaxIronsThird strength doesn't just encompass physical, Szayel definitely was the strongest in terms of intelligence, I wanna know how Aaroniero became an Espada, he only managed to get a hit on Rukia because of his ability and even then he still got beaten.

When i say stronger i mean reiatsu level, which doesn't count intelligence or techniques.
Overall, or in a battle, those two Fraccion would win maybe 2 out of 5 matches against Aroniero, even Aroniero having more "power".
Your point is spot on! Espada showed danger in less than half situations they appeared in. Mostly dissapointing were top 3 espada.
Bleach has such a vast number of characters. Wouldn't really hurt to kill some of them to raise the stakes. Most of them are just as interesting as the mountain of dead people in Attack on Titan.
I feel like Kubo has a quantity over quality habit
I felt that the Espada were much more interesting characters than the Sternritter. They're more developed and their motivations are far more varied.
True. The Espada had more uniqueness while the Sternritter came off as overconfident and expendable. Craving battle and power yet totally submissive towards Yhwach. Even some of the Espada broke Aizen's rules and attacked when they saw an opportunity.
Also nothing more badass than flamenco as your background music.
The espada were animated while the sternritters haven't (yet), not fair to compare them in my opinion
@@kensmilepachi3313 That's very true. Espada are also more memorable because of this. A LOT of people didn't continue with the manga and don't even know who the sternritter are.

I agree, the espada wouldn't have left that much of an impact if it wasn't for the incredible voice-acting/soundtracks/openings & endings they got...
Some of their fights had outstanding animation too, most notably Ichigo vs Ulquiorra
All those chapters wasted on the fracction could've been used to flesh out the Espada.
It could also be used to flesh out the difference between the Divisions and Fraccion, do some indirect storytelling on what kind of people the Esapada were in life, why they chose to become Vasto Lordes, what they did with that power, alongside what kind of Arrancar followed them. I think only Harribel's Fraccion got something like that.
Kubo loves to introduce new characters instead of fleshing out the old ones, that's the way he do things (unfortunately)
I would've kept Hisagi vs. FIndor as that was easily a top 10 fight in Bleach. As well as Yumichika's fight since we got too see the abilities of his true shikai
The last part of the Arrancar arc felt cut short. Another example is Shinji Vs Gin(two of the most interesting characters) was offscreened, Kensei did a Bankai reveal and that was offscreened, also I'm pretty sure there was supposed to be Kido battle between Tessai and Aizen too.
@@KaiserAfini They didn't choose to become Vasto Lordes, it's debatable if any of them even were. Some agree 4 and up are Vasto Lordes.
I think Szayel did pose a pretty decent threat compared to a lot of the other espada in his fight. Like realistically he took out 5 of the six characters he fought. The only thing was he wanted to drag things out because he wanted to make them all suffer. But really with the amount of characters it took to take him down adds to his threat in my opinion at least
yeah and that got me pretty hyped too. like he took out all those people and was so hard to kill and he was only #8?? i couldnt imagine how hard the stronger espada would be to kill. then was just slowly disappointed

My opinions about the Espada:
Each one, especially top 5 should’ve had the same threat level as Grimjow and Ulquorra
The top 3 should not have been defeated that easily. Only Stark, who took on 4 captains, a pair against him
It was stated a vasto lords alone surpasses the average captain and we had 4 vasto
Yammy being the strongest Espada was the biggest mistake imo

It wouldn't have been so bad if kenpachi and byakuya were actually attacking him and not each other and mayuri wasn't sitting on the side lines watching bored that fight
Just to add:
Ichigo, with bankai and having gotten stronger since his fight with Grimjoww, could barely cut an unreleased Ulquoora Hierro and needed Bankai to keep up with him
But Toshiro in Shikai is able to easily keep up with Tier? So by that logic, Toshiro in his shikai far surpassses Ichigo bankai, even Ichigo mask bankai
And Espada 2 was such a dissapointment, given his opponents and how he is 2 ranks stronger than Ulquorra, Soi Gon and Omeada shouldve been killed in seconds. He dodged an attack from Omeada when his Hierro should easily block anything from even a competent captain besides the strongest ones
But Non of them felt threatened or used their Bankai so he was pretty disappointing

I always wanted more attention on Espadas.
Totally agreed, stark should have been the peak of hollow in the series, the absolute master of their signature attack cero. Instead even shooting a bazillion of them he never hit a captain which dodge with ease the mitralieta. His signature move us just a suicide bomb consuming his soul, while he was the one that killer others with his sole pressure. Or the fact that his enemies where 4 captain class but all of them fought only is shikai is still not enough to redeem himself
@🃏Chewstié 🃏 my take had nothing to do with strength but with how disappointing were stark abilities for the supposed top espada. He had a fantastic design but his attack where really basic, lots of normal cero and he even loses that aspect to fight with makeshift blades and suicide bomb that kill a part of himself and didn't even make lasting damage to his enemies (baragav at least got an arm of soifon).
For the guy who was so strong no one could live with him his true ability was just the attack any hollow can use and even if he shoots a trillion of them the captain not even known for their speed, didn't even get a scratch on them dodging.
That's what I meant he was just really unimpressive compared to his peers, take ulquiorra like you did he had an unique name cero, an explosive spear which he can use both in CQC and from the distance and regenerative abilities. Which gave him a variety of moves and he can actively fight without killing himself.
It would have been cooler if he had a pressure/gravity related ability that could harm people based on his reiatsu and endrance their movements so he could shoot them easily. It would have fit his theme of people unable to get close to him and gave him a more menacing gunner image

Stark was very underwhelming, which is sad because I honestly had the most interest in hun out of all of them. Especially when you see so many different Espada at lower levels seem so ridiculously strong, have him be the definitive #1 in the espada, he should’ve gotten to showcase more

it's worth pointing out that the Espadas in Hueco Mundo got the worst possible match-ups against the captains, which in itself is probably, smart but lazy writing
Mayuri vs Szay, you have a smarter scientist outmatching another scientist using hacks
Byakuya vs Zommari, you have the second-fastest captain with an ability that just nullifies Zommari's body control ability
Kenpachi vs Nnoitora, you have a strong melee type fighter against a slightly weaker melee fighter
They can watch ichigo and others with badge, survilense bug of kurotschi

I remember when the Espada first introduced they said the Espada were much stronger than a Captain, but turns out that they got defeated by one. One of them also killed by a lieutenant.
Everything was great until we get to see the underwhelming power of the first 3 Espada, specially Starrk.
They weren't underwhelming if you think about it like Starrk didn't try most of the fight when he did he easily bodied 2 vizard captains

Starrk just didn't want to fight. He was so sad the whole time, in fact on rewatching the anime I think he was clearly very depressed and no one was really taking that into consideration which is why I found his death so sad.
Underwhelming? Not at all
The problem with the top 3 was that there fights were structured and concluded in such weird ways that it was hard to tell whether they were strong or not. Non of them lose in a straightforward way
Before checking the vid out, I'll say that my problem with them is they don't really kill anyone... Like, at all? This might be a more Kubo related problem (pre TYBW) since I feel like in Bleach none of the good guys ever die.
That was my main problem, like I wouldn't have minded Ulquiorra/Nnoitra killing someone, it doesn't have to be a main character either, like maybe Nel's Fracciones killed by Szayel? I dunno, something at least.
Well, looks like i was somewhat right? Someone should really do some kind of percentage of win/loses that the Espada suffer.
I feel like 80% of those wins should be from Grimmjow and Ulquiorra alone. Lmao
Kubo admits that one of his faults is the introduction of too many characters. But I would rephrase that. Having many characters in a universe is normal, but the problem is his inability to manage everyone. And that's why he should have had more character deaths to balance it. I feel like it's an unpopular opinion but for example Ikkaku should have died against Edorad. That would have been a perfect ending for his character along with the backstory. Would have helped Kubo to focus more on other characters.
I mean yeah, but let's be fair. Who did the sternritters kill? Saskibe, who's only prior appearance was getting punched by Ichigo. Yamamoto. And I am pretty sure that's everyone.

Arroneirro, Saylapparo, and Barragan should stay dead.
Number 7 just wasn't that interesting to me.
Yammy should probably stay dead but I don't think that he actually died, he just wasn't shown again.
Grimmjow's fraccion should stay dead, Barragan's whale fraccion should stay dead, Charlotte Coolhorn should have stayed dead; Findor is kinda up in the air, he had a good fight and served his purpose, the bird fraccion should have been brought back his fight was a sloppy mess, and I think the fraccion Soi Fong fought should have been brought back.
It would of helped a little of them not getting hanbel beaten and taken away if more lived or some how were able to be made but thats alot of eating and pushing limits to become a at less arrancar.
Considering how little Kubo did with the Espada that did survive (Grimmjow, Nel, Harribel) I don’t think it would’ve made much of a difference
They should have really allowed them to win some fights and kill some shinigami. There should have been a part where a midlevel Espada (Nnoitra, Zommari, Grimmjow?) is locked in a fight against a few lieutenants (like Sasakibe, Omaeda, Isane, Tetsuzamon and the two guys from the 13th), and killed some of them, while seriously wounding others. There should have been some replacement captains for the 3rd, 5th and 9th squads who could have been killed by the three strongest Espada in a skirmish. Some of the less popular/least important captains like Suifeng and Komamura could have been killed by an Espada too. Soul Society really flawlessed Aizen's army at the end, there should have been casulties.
i agree! Some of the Vizards should've died too: Mashiro should've died to Wonderweiss, Love should've died to Starrk (but not before revealing his Bankai), etc.
I agree with you, I never felt like anyone might actually die until the TYBW. After the first invasion we all knew the Sternritters were for real and on a different level and it was great not knowing if everyone was gonna make it this time. I still love the point of Hueco Mundo though, Ichigo accepting his hollow and his animal side. Ulquiorra and Grimmjow will always be some of the best characters in bleach to me.
Looking back on it, I think it’s funny how Ayon seemed like more of a threat than some of the Espada. Great vid!
It is kind of a shame how things played out with the Espada. There really were no stakes. Heck by the end I was almost feeling sorry for these guys rather than being hyped up by the wins of the protagonists. They just rarely got a chance to feel powerful and dangerous. The top Espada was basically embarrassed in his fight.
While it is nice to see that lessons were learned, it doesn't really go back and save the Espada themselves in any meaningful way. It was a tough position to be in. Just too bad that things didn't go better.
Hi MrTommo, I'm speaking from Brazil as a big bleach fan since the beggining of the series and I'd love your videos, specially the ones where you give you opinion about how the series was conducted, for sure my biggest complain about the espadas is the fact that no one of this character has won a single battle, this is very disapointed, specially when we think about the most powerful ones as Stark and Ulquiora.

Weirdly enough, the Aaroniero fight is the one that bore me the most of all of the Espada's (that, and the Zommari one too).
But even if I love the Espada arc, I must agree with you, they should have taken few wins to feel more threatening and impactful
Agreed they talked for most of it and I am not a fan of cheap undermining passive aggressive crap. I hate that irl, stop beating around he bush deal. I did not like Aaroniero but I did like Zommari though for the astethics. The man looks like a shaman and his release is magic that's cool. I also like the eye and what a 3rd eye symbolize. I wish he was killed by someone else though. Byakuya was already established as the top of the hierarchy as unbeatable. There was no way this guy would have had a chance. I remember thinking that.
Iirc he was a 9 so yeah >_> he had no chance of winning anyways, just a fodder fight considering he is hardly mentioned and no backstory really

I think the main issue throughout the whole series was the power creep of the captains. Bleach was probably at the peak of popularity during this arc so I’m guessing they got cold feet actually offing some of the Gotei. Missed opportunity if you ask me, the character roster was overloaded after the Aizen arc.

Well the captains were far more experienced than the espada, most of whom recently became arrancar and didn’t have much experience fighting shinigami. Aizen basically used them to weaken the captains. As I doubt he’d be able to fight them all healthy. The espada themselves had the worst match ups with the captains.
9.Aarunerio fought Rukia who was familiar with his fighting style and had cause to beat him
8. Szaylloporo fought Mayuri who studied his abilities and had a counter for everything he had.
7. Zommari fought Byakuya whose bankai was an effective counter for his abilities
5. Nnoitra fought Kenpachi who was able to tank most of his attacks and was the only captain who could have cut him.
3. Hallibel fought Toshiro whose abilities stalemated hers
2. Barragan would have undoubtedly defeated Soi Fon without Hachi who defeated him on a hunch
1. Starrk fought Kyoraku someone like himself and subconsciously held back and was eventually demoralized..

Had these characters fought anyone else say
Starrk vs Toshiro, Barragan vs Sajin, Hallibel vs Soi Fon, Nnoitora vs Byakuya, Zommari vs Mayuri, and Szaylle vs Kenpachi the Gotei 13 would have gotten their collective asses kicked.
Rukia didnt really beat Aaroniero because she was familiar with his fighting style. She pretty much loses but gets a killing blow on him by pointing her broken sword in front of his face and materialize the blade through one of his heads

With the ease at which he fought all of them, and the fact Ichigo was fully healed and Aizen still was just toying around with him, the fact there was never an effort Aizen fight, other than maybe maybe Isshin, I'd say that the "full strength" factor wouldnt have mattered, plus its not Aizen's fault Yammamoto used the fire prison at the start of the battle, else Aizen wouldve been fighting from the very start. Full strength or not, Aizen was taking them all out, lol he even killed off like 2 of his own allies, Halibel was more or less at full power as no one actually damaged her, so yeah

I completely agree. The Espada were my all time favorite villains of Bleach but yeah everytime a captain (ant capt) showed up I would immediately think the Espada fighting was going to die.
Never once crossed my mind that the captain would lose at all which completely nullified any sense of stakes in the battle for me as well.
I never understood why Kubo didn't kill at least one captain against the espada. He did a perfect work on backstory and design but zero sense of danger, you're right.

Kubo didn´t kill captains because he needed them for later, that´s the main reason.
However, he could have killed Hinamori, Hachigen, Hanataro, Mashiro, or even Yumichika if he wanted a surprising twist.
The espada should have taken more Ws.
Stark was number 1 and didn't kill anyone, he should have killed tons of jobber soul reapers and should have been the main threat to get rid of before Aizen attacks. He should have also forced Shunsui's bankai out which would have defeated him.
Barragan should have killed Hachi at the very least and maybe put Soi Fon out the fight. I think his downfall would have been better if he was defeated by Aizen for trying to sneak attack him instead of the vizards.
Harriebel should have killed Rangiku and some of the vizards. Also getting a 2nd release in the war.
Grimjow should have gotten a 2nd release in the war and a final fight with Ichigo after defeating Ywach.
Zommari should have had some time to shine b4 meeting Byakua and explain his obsession and backstory.
Aaronario shouldn't have been killed the way he was and could have potentially been Rukia's rival in the future similar to grimjow and Ichigo. That's where he could show his full potential.
And Yammy should have stayed the 10th espada and not been killed offscreen.

The Espada should've had the type of battles the Sternritter had. We had such a massive hype for the Espada but then it all came down to nothing. Instead they came off as pawns to Aizen's schemes and too easily defeated due to being paired against their worst matches. Then after that, the Arrancar basically did nothing in the War arc
The arrancar arc was painful for me to watch. All of the build up was suggesting that the espada were gonna really powerful and dangerous, then they all die without killing a single soul reaper. There are just no stakes
I was perfectly fine with Ulquiorra, Nnoitora, Grimmjow, Zommari and Aaroniero losing the way they did. Those fights were almost perfect and made sense. The top three should have had more fanfare, though. I wish Stark, Halibel and Barragan mopped the battlefield with their opponents and only lost because of a deus ex machine. They could have had Mayuri arrive later with Urahara after working on some kido-fueled device that nerfed the last Espada to a point where they could conceivably be beaten. In other words, the Gotei 13 were outmatched, forcing the shinigami to resort to a cheap trick. This removes the question of whether or not the Espada were a threat but also sullies our image of Soul Society. Instead of them appearing as a shining paragon of justice, they look more like soldiers occupying a gray area and it makes the Espada seem more powerful and sympathetic. Once again, they have been cheated out of their moment in the sun and damned just like any other hollow. You could even have the Vizards show up after the Espada go down, watching from a distance with Shinji commenting on how quickly Soul Society will resort to nasty tactics. This would also fix the Vizards because they could fight Aizen directly (since they had no stake in the war itself, but wanted revenge against Aizen). The Vizards would still lose, but it would be understandable because, well, its Aizen. You could even have them blend their individual skills to give Aizen a run for his money and really show what they were capable of. Just my thoughts. Sorry for the long comment.

Excluding Harribel, Starkk & Barragan didn't lose to a " deus ex machina". Kyouraku defeated Stark by implementing tactics, and Barragan got defeated due to Hachi's creative use of his powerful Kido. Even with the Vizards arrival, the captains were still struggling. I agree with your other sentiments.

Honestly, I loved all the fights. They felt realistic and perfectly natural based on all the factors involved.
My biggest complaint that I would have changed is that Hinamuri survived Toshiro's attack. In my opinion, she absolutely should have died there. There is no point for her living as she does squat in the next arc, and no logic toward how she survived his attack.
With their being 13 captains and 10 Espada you would have assumed that some of the captains would have died especially with the visors as well you would think more captains would be destroyed

One of the reasons i always expected the espada to be beaten was because of how Kubo always paired the matches if we ignore the fights that ichigo fought. The scaling is also off, as vasto lorde are supposed to be stronger then captain class but that is a can of worms for a later time.
Zommari is an easy one, his amor ability takes control of 1 thing per eye. Put soi-fon against him, and she would be at a disadvantage but byakuya is at an advantage.
Barragan is another fun example, thanks to his ability, you cannot win at close range. Soi fon and hachigen are pretty strong at range. One has a nuke, the other is a master at kido.
Grants ( scientist dude ) was an interesting one as he was winning originally when facing off against renji and ishida. Depending on how much preparation he is capable of, most captains might struggle with that arrancar as he could nullify damage if there was enough data of an attack. Mayuri however went the scientist route in order to beat him and succeeded.

Totally agree about the lack of threat for the Espada. They definitely could’ve had some wins even if they were minor to emphasize how powerful they were.
I disagree about the comparison to the Sternritter for the same reason you pointed out in your video about them. In my mind having Mask beat Shuhei, then Kensei then Rose only to fall to a powered up Renji was just a bit of overkill on Kubo’s part.
Only some of the Sternritter felt like threats and there was no distinction as to who would be a major threat apart from the ones who went to the palace.
Their leader was stated to be omnipotent and omniscient. Like, several times lmfao. In the original manga, both japanese AND English, Yhwach with the Almighty is stated omniscient and omnipotent like 3 times. He can literally do whatever he wants using the future lmfao and can see and control an entire multiverse of possibilities. Even though thats obviously nigh omni and not true omni. Since a hard counter to his powers does exist in the verse. But I think its pretty hard to argue that the Quincies werent a bigger threat than anyone to ever come before lmfao. I mean their leader did kill and absorb god. Utterly fodderize the soul society. And ends the story as the NEW god because literally nobody else but him is powerful enough to hold the Universe together, anymore. after he killed the soul king lmfao. (confirmed by novels.) Juha is a sternritter (letter A) but even if you just want to talk about all the others. They are blatantly above the Espada and took Ws
There were a lot of issues (for me) with the Espada despite how cool they were conceptually and even in execution. I don't know if Tite Kubo really planned for them or not from the beginning but it doesn't seem like he did. In early Bleach, Menos Grande level Hollow are said to require a special task force to take out by Kuchiki Rukia. She isn't a lieutenant or anything though so maybe I can chalk that up to her being an unreliable narrator of sorts BUT taking her at face value it seems surprising that the Espada aren't more powerful than they were. If just regular Hollow (regular in the context of them not being Arrancars) are so powerful, I would assume that Adjuucha/Vasta level Arrancars would be strong enough that they'd be winning some of the war fights.
Stark should have just recked everyone including Kyouraku and it should have took Yamamoto or Ichigo to take him down and Harribel should have won against Toshiro

My biggest issue with the espada is how quickly they got ran through, by the time the war arc started we were down to the first 3. Most of them got 1 fight and there were some interesting ones that i would of like to see more of. The only ones we got to see flesh out were technically grimmjow, ulquiora and yamy. Would of been great to see more character development, personal interactions with eachother or azien and a few extra fights or display of power.
Two main things.
1. Yammy being 0 was DUMB AF and completely discredited the powers of Stark.
2. Stark was a cool character except all he did was shoot Ceros from a gun. Underutilised and also under developed as far as his abilities go.
Do you guys remember when captain histugaya vs arrancar 11, which is grimmjow servan or maybe friend, in that fight hitsugaya barely defeat arrancar 11, hitugaya even used bankai + ryusenka, which ia his second strongest technique in arrancar arc, and use limiter release, and later he he can keep up with espada no 3, im so dissapointed that espada no 3 release sword and still couldnt beat him and did not that much damage to him, while arrancar 11 almost killed him
The moment the limiter comes off he one shots Arrancar 11. Halibel was more powerful than Hitsugaya but its hinted that she isn't going all out against him until after he uses Hyoten Hyakkaso and she breaks free in which she overwhelms him and she then takes on him and two vizards and its implied that they can't beat her unless they all work together.

Hitsugaya had his powers severly limited when fighting espada 11. After releasing his limiter he was completely out of his leauge and got one shotted.

Also the ice pillars he forms against the no6 who replaced Grimmjow and the technique he used on Hallibel are both stronger than the Ryusenka. I never thought about it, but damn, Lille Barro almost kills Shunsui, Askin was close to killing Kisuke, Gerard took out a hell ton of characters and wasn't legit defeated until the auswahlen, Pernida put up a goddamn good fight agains Mayuri and well...RIP Nemu. On the other hand the first 3 espadas got their asses kicked like they were nothing.
The espada were kinda just tools for Aizen that he knew wouldn’t do much. The Sternritter while still mostly tools, Yhwach purposefully wanted to take their strength to become stronger, the sternritter are a piece of Yhwach who are mostly captain level to even beyond.
The sternritter are fundamentally more dangerous threats. Even without his schrift sternritter n was able to take out Shunsui’s eye, when Stark with a zanpactou gun ended up getting his ass kicked by shikai. I love them both but I feel like their “threat” was well done
Fuck Gerard, he was Yammi but Quincy, TYBW arc had two annoying quincies instead of just Yammi in the Arrancar arc, those were M the Masculine and Gerard, charcaters who aren't killable are the worst kind of villains.

The quincy seemed extremely overpowered in my opinion. Espada were much more enjoyable to me although making them slightly more threatening wouldn't have hurt.
I'd like to think in a perfect world, we could have Gotei 13 vs Espada vs Sternritter in all out warfare.

Kubo should really give the Espada at the very least, 1 kill. He shouldve let Nnoitora kill Nel, or let Harribel kill one of the not-so-relevant Visored member, or let Baraggan kill Hachi and incapacitate Sui Feng, or let Stark kill Love or Rose and Ukitake or let Yammy kill Byakuya and heavily injure the rest.
And as much as i love Aizen as a villain, that guy needs to be nerfed badly lol. Like, Kubo showcasing him as this straight up hacker mode villain in his BASE form really overshadows the rest of the Espada. Im actually fine with Aizen kicking the entire Gotei 13 ass alone with his Butterfly mode but him doing the same in his base is too much
same here, i always felt that was a missed oportunity all the arrancars battles, especially the one starrk vs kyoraku, he even didnt use his bankai because kubo didnt want to show it in that point of the series

It was really frustrating how the Espada were used. Halibel stood by and watched Grimmjow get beaten by Ichigo , then watches Nnoitora annihilate him, when he's obviously a valuable combat asset to their cause. Grimmjow should've been saved by Halibel...Noitora should've won his fight by all right against Kenpachi. Ulquiorra should've won too but fuckin Plot shields. Also, for being the Primera Espada - Starrk just fought like utter shit. For a guy who literally annihilates other hollows that even come near him , Starrk just got nerf'ed. It's rediculous.
Completely agree, but to be fair/bias, starrk did fight 4 captains. And the others' deaths broke his spirit which made him weaker. Still a **huge** letdown
Something to make the hollow’s better:
Give them wins over enemies and appear to one up each other when they’re having problems in a fight and also instead of fighting Mc’s or side characters why not lower ranks like how in the first major arc of bleach we got to see squad divisions having more than 3-4 members so why not let them go and fight the areancar in groups and lose terribly after all it shouldn’t be hard to write them in and it’ll be a first we see shikai and kido’s used in a group format where we as the viewer don’t know if they’ll win or not kind of like he tournament arc in dressrosa in one piece where we knew luffy would win but he was actually challenged and wasn’t part of every fighter arena
So have the lower ranked shinigami fight the areancar and lose or barely survive then the side characters and captains arrive to realize because they are the shinigami (ie let’s say eating shinigami or absorbing their soul gives a boost) the fights are now powered up a level showing the areancar have somewhat healed from their battles stronger than when the fights began
(SIDE NOTE: SET THEM UP AS CAPABLE LOWER RANKS LIKE IN “RANGER REJECT” BUT DON’T MAKE EM PEONS LIKE THE VILLAINS OF RANJER REJECT)

Sternritters will be even greater villainous group in Bleach when the anime comes back.(If Kubo is allowed to give us more backstory about the Sternritters and some flashbacks in the anime)
I think one thing Kubo could've done is actually have some characters die, the reason why the quincy's are seen as a threat is because a lot of characters died, I thing some of those characters should have lost to the espada and died there instead of later on

That’s the problem with most Shonen arguably. The lack of a sense of true danger: killing significant characters to heighten that realism despite it being a work of fiction. Toriko did this decently but HxH may have done this the best with character dying when their purpose had been used up. This is also why DBZ has some of the worse feelings of a black of danger (the afterlife and being able to be brought back with no consequences).

Kubo should have killed some shinigami captains and lieutenants during the war so it wouldn't be so one sided, plus Aizen should at least not let Espada 4 and above die if he could help it since they are strong enough to actually be major tools.
The biggest problem with the espada goes back to the biggest problem of the arancar arc:It’s the Soul Society arc again. The only difference is the arrancar are actual bad guys and can die. This made the arc and the characters feel empty and boring and completely not a threat.
On top of which the absolutely silly numbering Kubo gave them. Number 6 is removed but instead of 7 moving up which makes sense if the numbers are based on strength a random comes in to be 6. There are a whole list of old numbers that didn’t replace any new ones either when one of the new ones goes down. The zero espada cleared this up but by then all of them were already defeated (many quite easily) and it no longer mattered.
I'll always like the Espadas more than the sternritters. Mainly because they didn't have bs powers. I really dislike the last arc just because to me the fights are dumb. The quincy's just can't die and once you see that the fights just became boring to me. I felt more threats from the Espada mainly because they can be beaten. My opinion if your opponent can't be beat, it's not even a fight.

Exactly. Making the top 4 sternritters borderline immortal was not a good move. Especially in the case of Gerald (which was the worst fight out of the four imo). Kubo made them too powerful

Grimmjow is one of if not my favorite anime characters, I feel that if I were in Kubo’s position I would’ve given him an actual fight in the thousand year blood war (I guess he gets a couple in CFYOW) and some sort of redemption or realization that he isn’t the strongest and make him a little more human. Anyway I love bleach and him both
It's unfortunate that the Espada ended up just being Aizen's opening act. He created the Espada to die softening up the Gotei 13. Kubo hyped up the Espada so that this plot twist would hit harder. In the end, I don't know if he intended for them to be as popular as the ended up being. Personally, I love the Espadas because they encapsulate why I love the "evil organization" trope so much. A band of uniquely powerful villains united under one goal. They reflect the hero group and give them unique challenges so that they can individually shine.
By introducing the Espadas they also give Huaco Mundo so much world building. Because up until this point, the hollows were treated like fodder monsters. They had some cool designs and powers that give the heroes trouble, but they existed to be slaughtered. This arc showed the cannibalistic "eat or be eaten" world they have to live with, and it made me wonder what would happen if the more powerful hollows established a true civilization. To my surprise that actually did happen with the few surviving Espada, but I still wish more of them survived to grow out of their dependence on Aizen. To become the leaders to the hollows that they were supposed to be.

It's super annoying, because Bleach - from chapter 1- had a advantage to all other Shonen: The Afterlife as a integral part of the lore.
Kubo could have killed main characters and still brought them back without bullshit. Imagine if Ichigo died by defeating Aizen and became a proper Shinigami in Soul Society afterwards. Or maybe one of Ichigo's many irrelevant friends dies and becomes relevant in death. (Either as a Soul Society citizen or as a Hollow or something of that sort)
That's actually why GOT was popular and is still great for the first 4 seasons: nobody is invincible.
Then they start with the plot armour given to some fan favourites characters. Still, before this predictability was kept low thanks to it.

Because his power wa close to hollow that would have been very plausible he got a huge upgrade as a Vasto Lorde himself then he helped ichigo with saving orihime due to old ties. At least this way Chad would be able to stay up as a fighter protecting his friends loyal to ichgo. When it came to TYBW they could have gone back to recruit him once again for his help just as grimmjow was allowed to. This time though he wouldn't be afraid of killing Uryuu saying if he threaten to kill Ichigo. Because it's not like he was close to Uryuu and show just how serious he was. Also elevate Uryyuu as a threat
How Kubo can make the Espada a serious threat: Keep the usual situation with Team Hitsugaya defend Karakura Town, Orihime kidnapped, Team Ichigo in Hueco Mundo, Team Kenpachi later in Las Noches, and the rest in Fake Karakura.
But have Aizen send the Espadas altogether to invade and destroy Soul Society. The reason this works is because Soul Society vulnerable when you dont have a single Captain nor lieutenant defending it. Aizen can easily solo the Captains by himself.
I think the reason why the espada fights don't have more deaths or lasting injuries it's because it's wasn't final arc when you're near the end of a series you have a lot more room to add lasting consequences but sense that the Arrancar arc wasn't the end Kubo didn't want any of the good guys to die in case he needs a character or two in the future.
And yet he failed to do that too. He could have killed a vizard or two not like they all went back to the soul society even the ones in SS could have died in tybw
I wander because in the blood war arc you see the sternritter take out entire squads with their power adding to their threat and I think the thing that did it for me was when you saw Izuru get blasted not even seconds into the fight. If the arancar were given the chance to take out maybe unnamed characters and large groups of soul reapers they could have been more threatening. But the fights with the Arancars weren’t necessarily a war and more of a tournament arc where you see certain one on one battles of specific characters.
Aside from Barragan n Ulquiorra I never felt like Espadas were something to worry about.
Yeah, Starkk never tries to really fight and Haribel for some reason loses to Hitsugaya, the guy that got owned by shitty Luppi.
Honestly, Kenpachi should have at least had a draw against Nnoitora. Since he actually had a role in TYBW. But what if he had died? Mayuri should have had a much more rough time against Szayelapporo, in no way should he have had replacements for everything no matter if he’s still the scientist he is or not. Nemu should have just died and been reconstructed later on. Byakuya’s fight, to me, is just controversial with feelings and how it went because of the power Byakuya has. As far as I go, he should have been forced to use his final attack, Shukei Hakkuteiken to finish Zommari off. Yammy was a threat to ichigo and the other three but to the two captains, he stood no chance. He was intimidating in his largest form, but didn’t get much of a chance to cause damage there either. I’m both happy and disappointed with the arc as a whole. The Espada should have been more intimidating and fought a better fight. Soul Society captains should have died. The Espada were overhyped. The fraccion were shown to be strong adversaries but then the Espada didn’t deliver. The problem is they were said to be Vasto Lordes and captain class

Nope, Starrk, Barragan, Hallibel, Ulquiorra were Vasto Lordes the rest were Adjuchas.
Those 4 were indeed above captain class:
-Starrk fought 4 captains andd lost against the future captain commandant
-Barragan was way stronger than Soi fon...a captain
-Hallibel was imo the only let down, although she didn't lost against Toshiro
-Ulquiorra mopped the floor with Ichigo
Noitora and Grimmjow were captain level despite the fact that they were Adjuchas
Szayel was a former Vasto Lorde who split himself into two entities therefore devolving into an Adjuchas
Aaroniero was a Gillian who could get indefinetly stronger thanks to his abilities

The sudden power bump and the constant losses of the Espada losses really contributed to the lackluster nature of the Arrancar arc for me.

Agreed, the fact none Espada get into top 15 strongest Bleach characters and possibly don't get even close to that status is incredibly dumb. However I think considering Barragan was toying with a captain is pretty good and the way Aporro and Yammi toyed with lietanant level fighters too but for the latter two they got destroyed so hard when captains came, Stark and Harribel despite being top three Espada only took on Kyoraku and Toshiro while the latter were holding back for one reason or another and they STILL won (though to be fair it did took multiple captains to take Stark but it would have been better imo if it took 100% Kyoraku to defeat him for some reason). Also how hard Kenpachi destroyed Nnoitora was dumb as well at least have it be a fairly even fight, same with Zommari and Byakya though I can look the other way for the 9th to 7th Espada since they are supposed to be the weakest (though still underwhelming). I very recently got into Bleach (tehnically 2 years ago, but I only watched like 1-2 fights hated it and never looked at it again until around a few months ago when I picked it up again and actually loved it) I remember seeing Ulquiorra giving Ichigo immense trouble and I thought this man is around Aizen level given that Ichigo not much later destroyed Aizen and I was like he has to be the strongest guy under Aizen and then I saw like Seththeprogammers video on Espada rankings, I didn't watch it at all but from the thumbnail I saw Ulquorra was number 4 and this was 2 years ago when I knew nothing about Bleach so I didn't know that he already was ranked like that in the anime I didn't even know there were rankings or . . . anything I just knew that Ichigo fought him almost right before Aizen and he was fighting equally (even beating Ichigo before the latter turned into a vasto lorde) and then Ichigo destroyed Aizen the main bad guy. So I thought if this group is like that they have to be insane but nope, most others were very dissappointing if not all. Also the fact Aizen said he could take on and defeat all 10 of them at once really slammed the final nail in the coffin for Espada being this huge threat (also even if as you said they weren't a huge threat I doubt Aizen actually could defeat all 10 just cause 10 is a lot I'd take it he could defeat 5-7 at most but it does a nice job of destroying Espadas credibilitty as strong villains even if not true). I have no idea why I made this comment so long lol

Well byakuya and miyori fought some of the weaker espada and nnoitora was kicking ichigo’s ass for a bit, even when he was wounded and managed to last long enough for nel to revert back to child form. A lot of opponents are basically screwed when kenpachi shows up. Halibel was technically never beaten by the good guys and was handling 3 opponents pretty well. Barragan was also doing fine and soi fon would of lost her life if she didn’t sacrifice her arm. I see that as kubo showing how scary his power is. In fact it’s so scary and almost op that it’s the way he was beaten. Stark also faced multiple opponents and really only lost because his heart never really seemed to be all in the fight. I don’t think it was his power that was lacking but rather he caused himself to lose. Honestly I don’t like yammy and already consider him a joke so I was fine with that. Also I don’t think there were many vasto lorde in the espada ranks so not many of them outmatch the captains.

Stark, Hallibel and Barragan were so unbelievably disappointing and just messed up the power scaling. Hitsugya for example fighting so evenly with Hallibel, nunber 3 was nonsense.

I would have liked some more hit and run attacks from the espada. Imagine just dropping Starrk into Soul Society for a cero metralleta before beaming him back up.

If they were the same terrorising threat as the Sternies, they'd have been the best written villain group of all time.
I always found the biggest issue with the espada fight the reliance on "the rescue"
9th espada: this holds up the least but rukia was somewhat saved by her old master
8th espada: renji and uryu saved by kurosutchi
7th espada: rukia saved by byakuya
6th espada: ichigo saved by orahime
5th espada: ichigo saved by kenpachi and nell
4th espada: everyone saved from hollow ichigo
All 3 top espada saved by the vizards and aizen
0 espada: ichigo and healer have to go so byakuya and kenpachi jump in

Hachi saved soifon as barragan was about to kill her. Hallibel was the one who needed help . Shunsui was stronger than staark deal with it
Kubo hyped up the Espada to be something they were not. In the end they just amounted to being Captain fodder, especially the "top" 3.
The only ones to come away impressive were Grimmjow and Ulquiorra, who of course got to fight the protagonist. The rest were overhyped disappointments.
I’m not going to lie, the stern Ritter were way more fearsome and threatening considering they declare war and kill the head captain, the vice head captain and literally bodies most of the captains and lutentients in the arc. But I feel like the espadrilles are just cooler and more iconic and deep in terms of character.
Yeah I think that is the way most people feel to be honest, and it makes total sense.
