    Great video Laura, very informative. Just a quick question: are there any high school grade requirements in general or is the diploma (and English exam) the only requirement? For example, if a certain GPA mark is needed to have a shot at the application (and if so, which is)? Thanks for the video!

    • @LaurasLifeInJapan
      @LaurasLifeInJapan  3 роки тому +8

      Hi, thank you for watching and I'm glad to hear that it was helpful :D I double checked for you with KU Leuven about the admission requirements and as long as you are a native speaker of English you won't have to hand in a proficiency certificate upon application. For most degrees there is no set GPA mark that you have to have to be able to apply. You just need to have your High school diploma. The reason why there's no set GPA mark is because the Belgian government believes that all students should have equal access to higher education. It's not hard to get in in most cases but it's super hard to graduate I would say. Often 50% of students already drop out or change degrees in the first year.
      What are you interested in studying at Ku leuven?
      Hope you'll have a nice Wednesday! :D

    Hi there, just wanna correct you on UCLL and KUL. KUL is the university, UCLL is the University College. In dutch we say Hoge School and it is a whole different school education. A university diplome is higher than a university college diplome. At university you also do 3 years of bachelor and then x years of master. At the University College you only have 3 years of bachelors or graduates (and later you still can do masters at the university of bachelor after bachelor or postgraduates). UCLL isn't connected with KUL other than beining in the same city ;)

I just couldn't come up with the proper term to translate 'hogeschool' into English 😅 Thank you for addressing this! I'm sure it'll hep other viewers out if they read it!

      Thank you as well for leaving me a comment :) It is definitely possible to transfer from a Portuguese university to KU Leuven! In that case the international office of KU Leuven will review the courses you've taken so far at your university in Portugal and see how the overlap with the course or study you want to do at KU Leuven, based on that they'll decide in which year you should start or if you can just continue forward from where you left of in Portugal ;)

      Hi Kurt! Thank you for your comment :) I've had to write quite a lot of motivation letters myself so I hope I can help you. What's important with a motivation letter is that you kind of give a description of your current circumstances, and how studying at KU leuven could be a great thing for you, what it would mean for you both personally and career wise. Also, it's very important to talk about your own strengths and weaknesses and how they might be useful or improve at KU Leuven. So try to convince them with your letter that you cannot only benefit from studying at KU Leuven, also convince them that YOU studying at KU Leuven is a good thing for KU Leuven and the students there ^^

    Thanks for the video! You guys, do you think a one-year masters holder (60ECTS) has less chances to be admitted to a phd program compared to someone that has a two-year masters? I mean is it worth, at the end of the day, a one-year masters for pursuing a phd later on? Plus, when pursuing master's studies (any type), a part-time job would be a barrier for the coursework of study? Thanks again!

      Hi Voyagerina! Sorry for the late reply! No I don't think that a one year master's has less chance of being admitted to a phd program! the duration of a master's degree is decided by the faculty (either 1, 2 or 3 years) and their corresponding phd takes that into account so both are fine ;) Also having a parttime job during your master's shouldn't be a problem! you'll have a lot more time in comparison with bachelor students!

On Ku Leuven’s website there’s a list of scholarships that you can apply for and all the information on how to apply :) I’m sorry I can’t tell you in detail about them because I’ve only ever applied for the scholarship of the Flemish government. If you want to apply for that one then you have to go through Ku Leuven’s social services and they’ll help you fill everything out :)

    • @LaurasLifeInJapan
      @LaurasLifeInJapan  3 роки тому +1

      Hi thank you for leaving me a comment!
      Congratulations on starting your predoctorate soon! I hope it'll be amazing! 😊
      As a student at Ku Leuven you'll receive a 'resident' card from the Belgian government which enables you to open a bank account at any bank you want. Banks in Belgium don't have the highest saving interest rates but the highest I know about is 0.35% at PNB Paribas Fortis. ING, also has an interesting investment program where you 'give' a set amount of money every month to your bank, they'll invest it for you based on the risk level you chose and the profits are deposited in your 'savings' account. Other famous, reliable banks in Belgium are Argenta, KBC, Beobank, Bpost bank, AXA, Belfius. I'm sorry that I can't really go into detail about all of these banks individually, I only have personal experience with one of these banks. But all of them are well established. Also, when you open a bank account as an international student, that bank account automatically comes with a maestro cash card in most cases. With that card you can buy things and withdraw money from atms etc in all EU countries. Also transferring money to other accounts within the EU doesn't come with extra costs.
      Hope this helps you at least a bit and let me know if you have any more questions. I'm thinking about making a video soon about all the things that come with student life in Belgium (banks, student recreation, student jobs, what after graduation etc) so if you are interested in hearing about that then let me know too please!

      @@LaurasLifeInJapan Hi Laura, thank you very much for the reply, I sincerely appreciate it. I can't seem to find the 0.35% interest rate savings account at PNB Paribas Fortis.
      .
      I've done a bit of google maps search for ATMs at Leuven, Brussels, Antwerp, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Paris. ING is present in Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany - which sounds useful to avoid ATM withdrawal fees at non-ING ATMs. However, there are a lot of complaints with ING and PNB Paribas Fortis ATMs. KBC seems better rated by a small margin but is mainly localized in Belgium.
      .
      Further, reading app ratings at the Google Play Store. PNB Paribas Fortis has the worst rated app among the 3. ING Belgium app seemed good at some point but is currently having issues. KBC is the best rated by a landslide.
      .
      Started with the 3 because they're explicitly mentioned in the KUL website www.kuleuven.be/english/life-at-ku-leuven/money-matters/bank-matters-and-currency-exchange. I have to do further reading on the banks you mentioned and inter-banking transactions.
      .
      No further questions for now. I'll let you know whenever.
      .
      Yes would be very interested on life as a student in Belgium. Though I would imagine that everything has drastically changed because of COVID (maybe you can do a life before and after COVID comparison hmm...). Also I will probably miss any student orientation since AY2020-2021 begins on the 21st of September and I have a mandatory 14-day self-quarantine upon arrival in Belgium i.e. I won't be able to enroll/register on time.

      in my country, we have savings accounts with debit cards. and that makes a lot of things convenient. Apparently it's not like that in europe.

    Hi, I have impression that EU universities does not allow students to apply for different departments (BA in Social Science, then wish to apply MSc in Mathematics for example). I have MA in International Relations but wish to switch career to Data Science in the near future hence thinking to re-do Master degree in Statistic or Data Science. Considering my zig-zag educational background I wonder if that is feasible to be admitted to KU Leuven. Any thoughts or advices on this?

      Hi Novega it really depends on the case I think 🤔 they might require you to do a preparatory program when switching departments but it shouldn’t be too much of a problem 🤗

    Hello, Dear Laura ...I am from India and I want to know that ..how is the opportunity for getting a full fellowship to pursuing Postdoctoral research or double Ph.D. at KU Leuven in Geography, Agriculture, and Environment. Kindly let me know further ...I am very eager to study there...Thanks

      Hi Md Abdullah! Thank you for your message! I'm going to send you a link to Ku Leuven's website about applying for a phd in geography and all the information related to it! www.kuleuven.be/personeel/jobsite/en/phd/phd-candidates
      Do you mean a scholarship with fellowship? In case you mean a scholarship, Ph.D's at Ku Leuven are paid, so you'll be making around 2000 euro (after taxes) per month during the 4 years of your Ph.D. In that case you won't have to worry about getting a sponsorship. There are currently some Ph.D positions available in your field of interest so if you can it's best to apply before the 31st of August (closing date of the admissions)
      I hope I could help you with this!

    are you sure that the tuition fees are only 947 euros per year for internationnal students??
    If I have a french baccalaureate and I m not a french citizen will I need TOEFL?

      @LaurasLifeInJapan  4 роки тому +2

      As far as is noted on KU Leuven's website it's 947 euro for tuition (I have some international friends who also paid the same amount) but sometimes it seems to be more for certain countries, I don't know why and which countries specifically though...
      As for TOEFL, the bureau of admission will review each admission individually and decide whether it's necessary or not :)

      Hi Basraj Kattimani! According to Ku Leuven's website for the master in mechanical engineering you need to submit either a TOEFL or IELTS certificate upon admission but to speed the process up they recommend to also submit GRE scores. Hi Allessandro! Thank you for leaving me a comment! I'm not completely sure about the students at the faculty of engineering since I didn't go to that campus very often. However, most students at all of KU Leuven's faculties are Belgian and a smaller portion are international students from all over the world. I think in engineering it'll be quite balanced as well, not a ton of asian students probably but there will definitely be some!
