Living in Leuven as a Belgian can make you get used to everything and not notice the beautiful details. Seeing it through your eyes, though, makes me feel like I should romanticize it more because it is indeed an amazing city to live in!

I absolutely love the simplicity of this video. No massive intros, no ads, just you talking about things you appreciate. I've been to Leuven lots of times but I've never seen it through the eyes of a 'tourist'. Love it. Also, you have a really smooth and soothing voice, which compliments the video so much. Keep at it!

As a resident of Leuven it is nice to see the city through the eyes of visitors. When I for example go to the “oude markt” for a beer, we pass by the “grote markt” and forget or take for granted that there actually are beautiful historical buildings. You know they are there, but you never really pay attention to them. You get to see the city through an entire new set of eyes and it makes you value the little things that make the city beautiful. Because tbh, some of the places shown in this video, I either know where they are but didn’t really think they were special or sometimes didn’t even know were those locations are located. Even as a resident I learned something about the city! Great video!

Thank you for this beautiful reportage about your life in Leuven. I've lived in Bruxelles from 2013 to 2018 and I've left a part of my heart there and in all of Belgium. I've been to Leuven several times, mainly in sunday afternoon since it's so close to Bruxelles and I've loved it so much. Very often I've eaten at The Rector in Oude Markt (excelent hamburgers!). There's so much to see in Belgium (Gent, Antwerpen, Brugge, Mechelen, LIer, Namur, Dinant, Liège, Mons, Bouillon, and much more) and I wish you to continue to take profit of your stay in Leuven to visit as much as you can, as your are already doing. I wish you the best. Bye.

Great job, Emilia! I lived in Leuven in the early 1970s, and have gone back to visit the city often since! You have captured the beauty of the city and its surrounding towns (like Heverlee). I lived on Vaarstraat, about a mile from Stella Artois, so all I remember is the strong smell of fermentation during parts of the day. Anyways, enjoy your frittes and your warm gauffres! Warm greetings from Atlanta, GA.

I watch a lot of travel channels, and it's always so interesting to see how foreigners perceive my home country. I'm not from Leuven myself, but it's a beautiful city, and so many of them are in Belgium and many other parts of Europe. I'm from Dendermonde, a town about 30km NW from Brussels. I don't live there any more though (I've lived for 7 years in Northern Finland, Rovaniemi, right at the arctic Circle. Now I've been living for some 5 years in Odessa, Ukraine, great to learn about different cultures). But I always hold my hometown close to my heart. It also dates back to Medieval times, and practically destroyed during WWI, but rebuilt mostly in its original state. It has one of the most beautiful town squares (Grote Markt) in the country. And it's best known for this beautiful legend about a horse (Ros Beiaard). It also has quite a big beguinage. In fact, my late grandmother lived there for several years. It's tucked away right in the centre of the main shopping street, if you didn't know about it, you'd walk right passed the entrance. When you have the opportunity, you should visit it :)
    Thanks for sharing your impressions!

Hey I spent three months living at the Irish institute on broekstraat in early 87. Best three months of my life but you've shown me more of Leuven in just ten minutes.... I was doing a work assignment in Brussels. Drank sooooo much Stella, cinema had a bar, the train platform has one, even MacDonald's!!! I recommend descent de LA Lease kayak day trip. The basement blues club on the square was a good spot. Grand place in Brussels also had a blues club. Checkout La chaloupe d'or bar. We had american students who did incredibly selfish things like set off the fire alarm as if it was an alarm clock. Please do not behave on such a way in a foreign country (end of lecture)..... You reminded me what a blast I had in Belgium and made me wish to hell I had stayed. Regards to all at the "Nod", Irish Kevin.

Hi! As a Belgian student in Leuven, first of all welcome (maybe a bit late) and second it's very cool that you made a video of all things you liked. I don't live close to the city so coming here as a student was the first time to actually visit the city. I do believe Leuven has some of the most beautiful buildings in Flanders. As you said, the city is full of young people so that makes it so much nicer! Hope you have a good stay here!!

its a shame my parents decided to move us abroad to the UK for family, havent been back in years and still when i see videos like this makes me instantly happy, i miss my hometown and hopefully if everything aligns in my life i can move back to the best place ive ever lived, you have not lived until youve had frites with tartar sauce, the yearly carnival, the circus next to the catholic school, the botanical garden, the fact you can walk to town within 10-20 min, and im not sure if fabota is still going, but the best moments of my childhood was spent at that social club, its where i learned to kayak god i could go on for ever, just makes me more determined to move back it really is a magical place to raise a family.

Hello, I am from Czech Republic, I'm coming to Leuven (UCLL Campus Proximus) this September til February as an Erasmus exchange student, I can't really wait for it. I was little bit sad at first because I wanted to study in The Netherlands for their amazing architecture and the canals and also the culture of cycling everywhere but in the end it didn't work out. Watching this video absolutely threw away my doubts about Leuven though. It looks so beautiful, there are also canals, the culture is sooo similar. And I really have to say that I loved the historical-mediavel part, that one was so beautiful. The city it self kinda reminded me of Utrecht which is my favourite city from those I've visited in my life. Aaaaah, I can't wait and looking forward soo much.

Hi Emilia! Thank you for sharing your view about Leuven! Just a suggestion, whenever you visit a place on the videos, it would be very helpful to see the name of that place, and when you stop to eat/drink something at a restaurant/bar/caffee it would also be very nice and helpful to see a feedback from you about the food/drink. Your video popped up in my feed (living in Brussels), it was very relaxing to watch :) (love the botanical gardens in Leuven!!) If you go back to Brussels, I recommend the Dieweg cemetery in Uccle. It's outside the city centre but so worth it (especially on a sunny day!). It's a cemetery that was built in the 1860's after a cholera epidemic. It was desecrated and closed in the 1950's and, although the pathways are still being kept up, nature has been taking over most of the graves. It's very beautiful. :)

With some local forest walker group, I explored the closer part of the forest called Heverlee forest and there is a botanical garden part where all kinds of trees all over the world are planted. And actually, it is Not allowed to pick mushrooms at all in all areas in Belgian. Because they are very little and it is lefts for the forest animals. Enjoy your stay! ;)

Little historical remark (no criticism): the library you showed was not bombed in WW1. The library which was bombed was actually close to the University Hall and the Oude Markt. The foreign money was used after WW1 to build a new library. That's the one on the Ladeuzeplein.

The story of the library is even worse than that lol. That library wasn't bombed during WWI. The original, located at the Old Market (the large facade next to the Meeting Room, which is also the back of the university hall), was burned down (along with much of the city, every building that was rebuilt afterwards actually has a stone in the facade with 1914 and flames on it). This one was newly built after WWI, thank you America, and got shelled during an artillery fight between the British and the Germans (both blaming the other for hitting it :') ). And if the multiple destructions of priceless and irreplaceable books and manuscripts wasn't enough, after the university was split after the language conflict the whole collection was split too, sometimes in a way as ridiculous as giving the odd volumes to one and even volumes to the other.

I did not know that! I tried to do some research on the building, but unfortunately there was not much info available (and in English). Thanks for sharing!

Minor thing, but the replica you see on 5:24 isn't of the town hall, but of a set of towers that were once intended to be on the St. Peter's church itself. On 1:38 you can see the church has these odd flat finishes on its roof; that's where these towers were originally built, but they had to take them off later because the soil below was too soft and marshy to support the weight of the structure. These would have been 3 towers: one lower, one higher and then one lower again, not unlike the town hall, so I can understand the confusion. I only know this myself because a small guidebook at Museum M (just across the square from the Central Library) they give out for free had a section about it. :)

Can highly recommend a visit to the forest in Beauvechain just 10mins south of Leuven, it's also Meerdalwoud but the side at Beauvechain is much more beautiful

Btw, at 4:24 immediately to your right you are allowed to go through a sliding door to access the tropical house. It looks forbidden but the biologists like myself know its public, there a small turtles in the back and it has a cool jungle biome. At the kolenmuseum you can also just enter to see the museum with whale skeletons etc for free, also little known cool spot of the city
