Thank you for an insightful comparison, Tudor. I also enjoy my GX9 even after several years of use. I have several cameras and even shoot 35 mm film occasionaly. I love the GX9 for its combination of superb ergonomics, compact/descrete size, and good performance. And, like you, I think that it has soul. It's the spiritual grandchild of my twentieth century rangefinders and it's a lot of fun to shoot. Subscribed. 😊

The GX85 is a great camera too for the small rangefinder style of mirrorless camera. It's 16mp and lacks the tilting EVF, but for me that's fine for most of what I do. I have thought about selling both my GX85 and EM1.2 to pick up a an EM5.3 that will do everything I need between the cameras while downsizing a bit on the body size. I like the OVF being off to the side so that has kept me going that route. I'm content for the time being, if they do decide to release another enthusiast level rangefinder with the newer sensor, I'd probably be willing to sell off my other MFT bodies to pick it up.

I've had the GX7 for years, and I've shot some of my best street work with it.I have had all the Fuji X100 series cameras from my first X100 which I bought in June 2011 right up to the X100V and I can tell you I keep going back to the GX9.Theres just something about that Camera that I absolutely love, and to understand why it's better than any X-Pro 3 or X100V you would have to use it in the field and see why.
Plus I love working with the B&W files on the Panasonic!!!!

I know i am a year late to this video but in 2023 i am looking for a stills-only, compact, interchangable system. I use an A7C mainly but i want something with a true pancake lens. XE4 is now impossible to find so since i already own a ton of m43 lenses, i figured I'd look into the GX9 or something similar. This is exactly the video i was looking for. All cameras from the last ten years take great photos so for me, now, the most important thing is portability and ergonomics. I don't need the latest tech, it won't make me a better photographer. The GX9 is as relevant today as it was at launch. Thank you 👍

The GX9 is a very capable camera, I used mine today while shooting a feature for a glossy magazine, alongside my Canon R5, the little Lumix' image quality is fine mixed in the edit with the R5 images. Add the Lumix or JJC grip for the GX9 and the handling is transformed, for the better!

I had a GX80 for four years, it was a great camera but last summer I felt like getting a new one. I looked at the X-E4 but I found a good deal on the GX9. The GX9 is a GX80+ 😁 Thanks for the video because I feel its big brother, the G9, got all the attention.
I don't have the Lumix 20mm f1.7, I used to have it on my GX7, back in the day. I found the AF slow on the 20mm. I have the Olympus 17mm F1.8 and Lumix 25mm f1.7, both great lenses. I recently got the TTArtisan 23mm f1.4, that's a fun lens and looks really good mounted on my GX9.
I hope we will get a GX10 one of these days...

      I don't have a GX9, do have G9 and GX7, and PEN-F, E-M5ii, G7, GH4, E-PL7.
I look forwards to a GX10 because the PEN-F really wants a tip screen (otherwise it is a GX9/G9 with some hot sauce added). And there are some new sensors under development. Olympus backs do handle Lumix-OIS lenses better than Lumix backs handle Olympus-IS lenses.
The G 20mm f/1.7 is a pretty old lens, and if you delve into its exif we find it is a Leica, which explains the very fine accurate but slightly slower focus speed, and why some focus modes get greyed out. The camera does the AF not the lens, all the lens has to do is run its focus motors as directed by the camera.

I've owned both cameras and sent the X-E4 back because I prefer the egonomics of the X-E3 better. I sold the GX9 because I have a Leica CL which compliments my X-Pro3 and LUMIX S5 very nicely. That said, the GX9 in my view is a better camera when it comes to producing sharp b&w photos with the right Olympus lens, like the 17mm f1.8. When it comes to street photography it's hard to beat this combo. There are aesthetic things about the X-E4 I don't like and since the image quality is the same as the X-Pro3 it didn't have a place in my kit.
Let's just say I liked the GX9 enough that I'd consider buying one again.

The GX9 is an underrated photo camera even by micro 4/3 users. A point which is not in this video is the shutter. The mechanical shutter is amazingly quiet and with no schock, a big step up vs the GX8.

I’ve had a Fuji xpro 3 and while I loved the colours, I didn’t like the lenses. The Fuji lenses were just always too sharp and the pictures just looked flat, no depth. I picked up a Lumix GX80/85 and wow…fantastic photos with depth and feeling. For much cheaper than Fuji! I used to bash MFT systems but I never tried one before. Once I actually took a chance and bought the GX80/85 I was forever changed. I wish I gave MFT a chance sooner because it’s a fantastic system and camera. I use the Lumix 20mm 1.7 and the L Monochrome setting…it’s like the heavens opened up and the angels are singing. Truly spectacular. My Leica TL2 usually just sits at home these days while the lumix gets used, it’s really that good!

I really like the GX9 so I bought one and it arrived yesterday. There was a big problem with this brand new camera which caused the flip out display. After viewing an image on the display and returning to live view, the display would flicker. It would then flicker again if the lens was pointed towards a brighter light source. This happened with 3 different lenses so the problem was not the lens but with the camera. So, it will be going back to Amazon. Have you ever encountered this kind of issue?

Never could make the diopter focus adjustment get happy. I did some side-by-side comparisons with my Sony RX100 mark 3. I found that the Sony was sharper - much to my surprise. • @jeffslade1892

That the Fuji is better in low light is belied by its greater read noise and that its maximum is ISO 12800 (extends to ISO 25600) whereas the Lumix have a drop in noise at ISO 16000 (with a reduction in DR).
I don't dislike Fuji, my mate has one and it is very nice, but it has nothing my Lumix ans Olympus cannot do equally well, and they can often go further into the dark side (black cat in the coal hole) than most care to utilise, and whilst the extreme stabilisation (up to 6.5 stops) can allow long shutter, it won't quell movement blur.
With portrait it is often down to lens and aperture, and they do have a different "look" on each format.

Even If I love GX9 it's possible that some user will not have the same opinion like me, because of the image quality from a M43 sensor. And I get it. But I think it depends on taste, editing, experience and what you are shooting.
Personally I accept M43 image quality and I'm fine working around that, because the ergonomics and all other stuff that I get from the camera are helping me to get pictures that I can't take with other systems (yet)! Also Lumix GX9 gives best Bang! for your money... no need to buy expensive cameras from Fuji...

I think Lumix GX8 is better than GX9, certainly the EVF is better...☺

I have extensive experience with both micro four thirds and Fuji cameras. The 4:3 aspect ratio vs 3:2 is a huge difference. Yes you can crop MFT to 3:2 but you lose a lot of pixels. In my opinion, 4:3 is better for vertical/portrait orientation shots. For me 3:2 is much better for landscape/street photography. Plus Fuji colours blow Panasonic out of the water. The full-frame panny colours look good. Hopefully these made their way to the GH6.

Unless you shoot jpeg, there are no “Fuji colors” or “Panasonic colors”. Shoot raw then you’re in control. Personally I’m not a fan of Fuji’s “film simulations”, because I shot those actual films, and the digital versions look nothing like them.

@@joeltunnah strongly disagree. Yes you have a lot of latitude editing raw files, but different camera/processor combinations produce very different raw editing options. Brands have signature palettes, even in raw.

@@LyndonPatrickSmith I currently own Olympus, Panasonic, and Nikon. After editing the raw files, if there’s any difference between them it’s extremely minor, and you’d have to do a side by side comparison with a color chart to see it.
The whole “Panasonic has bad colors” thing was maybe true in their jpegs about 10 years ago, but not now.
I hate Sony Northrup, but he did a blind poll video of which colors do you prefer, and people were all over the map on brand, there was no clear winner.

I use xt 2 now instead of gx80 but I still find myself cropping portrait to 3:4
