Homura was sick, but finally got well enough to go to regular school. However, her shyness made it hard for her to make friends, until Madoka approached her, becoming the first real friend she's ever had. On the way home form school, Homura is attacked by a witch, but is promptly saved by Madoka (who was already a magical girl) and Mimi. Afterwards, Homura followed them and watched them on their adventures, until the walpergis. . . walpar. . . the big circus witch showed up and killed both Mimi and and Madoka. Homura, greif-stricken, makes a contract with Kyubey (the opportunistic bastard), with her wish being the ability to go back in time to the day she first met Madoka, so that she could help her and Mimi beat the. . . you-know-what. What follows is a series of failed attempts to save them made by Homura. She tries several different ways to save Madoka, including recruiting Sayaka and bringing Sakura over to their side. During this time, she uncovers the truth about magical girls and witches. At the end of one of the many failed attempts, Madoka, just before becoming a witch, sacrifices her last grief seed to save Homura, making the latter promise to stop her from ever becominga magical girl. Homura gains new resolve, and decides to do it all on her own. The opening sequence of thefirst episode was her most recent attempt prior to teh series, in which Madoka made a contract specifically to save homura from the you-know-what. So homura reset the clock again and started over. Now let me ask you something : have you actually seen episode 10? Because it makes all of this painfully clear through the course of the episode.

Actually, the true genius of this song is that it ultimately also qualifies as a double subversion. You _can_ see this as a depressing song about Homura's pointless struggles to save Madoka, but by episode 11 you can just as well see it as a hopeful and uplifting song from Madoka to Homura where she thanks Homura for sticking by her the entire time and promises to see the time loop through to the end. The lyrics fit perfectly for either interpretation but with completly different meanings.
I find the lyrics and tone of voice in Mikutans version more powerful and fitting than amalees version. Now don't get me wrong I like amalee but the lyrics in this version... and the deep tone of mikutan make it seem like Homura really is singing this, fighting for a future for her and Madoka. And the lines: "But when I'm with you, I fly. We can make it through this night, if we, connect." Just really emotionally hit me. It's like shes saying that she and the others can make it through Walpurgis night if they work together. And that when shes with Madoka she is strong and happy. Ok my bad but Mikutan I really like this cover. It's been in my playlist for a long time, and its staying there.
yeah, also imo i dont like the changes made to the lyrics in the other version. they distance the song from homura to be about the magical girls in general i feel, which isnt bad, but it still hits much harder to have it be about homura. it really adds to homuras character too - it doesnt just depict her as someone so desolate and despaired, this really portraits her hope and belief she can truly save and be with madoka, and the strength that conviction gives her. it adds an entire other dimension to her character almost.

I still suggest watching it. But like, be warned cuz this show is like Koh the Face Stealer from Avatar the Last Air Bender. Show any hints of emotions and it will rock your world.
When I first watched Madoka Magica I thought it was going to be another cutsy moe magical girl anime................Then I reached Episode 3 and things went for 0 to 100 real quick T^T.

Everyone keeps saying that "Oh, this anime tricks you, episode three was a total plot twist." And yes, the facade of a happy-go-lucky magical girl anime was misleading and yes, episode three is really where everything goes to hell, you do get a glimpse of what the anime is really like in the first episode. Literally, the first scene is Madoka running through a building that looks like an optical illusion and then opening a door and looking out at the ruins of an entire city floating in a purple sky while a girl (Homura) is getting beaten up by... something. We do later find out that this something is Walpurgisnacht, but at this moment in time, we have no clue what it is which makes it even creepier. Madoka is obviously terrified and while watching, we’re all pretty scared too because the first scene of this supposedly happy anime is literally a girl on the verge of death and mass destruction of an entire city! Sure, the scene ends when Madoka wakes up and then it's all fun and games for a bit resembling a normal anime. You know, main character runs out of the house with her late-to-school toast in her mouth, catches up to her friends, they have some talk about boys and are all happy. But then you see Homura again. Homura existing in real life confirms that Madoka's dream wasn't just a dream, it was real, and if Homura's here, you can bet destruction's on it's way. And if that's not enough, think of the first witch encounter that is in the same episode. It's confusing and scary, it looks like something out of a nightmare. Madoka and Sayaka are close to dying until Mami shows up and saves the day. The ironic thing about Mami defeating the witch is that Mami tries to make everything about fighting witches seem happy, exciting and flashy meanwhile the way Mami fights show you so much about darker, more serious nature of the show. Mami isn’t fighting with some cute little accessory or magic wand or tiara and shouting words as all of her attacks, (I mean, she shouts ‘Tiro Finale’ at the end of the battle but that’s not what I’m focused on) Mami is fighting with guns. Guns are always seen as a more mature and dangerous weapon and mature is exactly what the show is. Mami’s death certainly was frightening but it didn’t come out of nowhere. Mami’s death ends the facade of happiness in being a magical girl for Madoka, but it was already ending for us. There were plenty of hints before episode three. While Mami’s death is where shit hits the fan, it didn’t come out of the blue, it’s kind of a point of no return sort of thing. Like, “We’ve warned you what this is really like, so turn and run now or watch and don’t say that we didn’t warn you.” Don’t act like Mami’s death was the first and only warning that we got, accept that it was just the last.
“I’ll fight onward and see you again my friend. I won’t stop until the end! I won’t give in!” ...... Wow this is really about homura trying to save madoka 😓
This was an opening that I could never skip. I felt that it added even more heartbreak to an emotionally draining show. It makes you think that everything is going to be okay, and for some reason I always had hope at the end of the OP that maybe things would be okay from there on out. AND THEY NEVER. WERE.
For some reason every time I her Miku tan sing this song with that amazing voice I feel happy and energetic but at the same time I feel like crying. The emotion shown through her voice is indescribable.

In all technicality, I think it's about a month and a half or so. We see Homura waking up in the hospital on March 15th, and Walpurgisnacht takes place on April 30th. But you're pretty much right; I just wanted to point this out in case you weren't aware because it means that Homura spent nearly 12 years trapped in time. (45 days or so and the creators stated that Homura's travels through time was approaching the 100 mark) But yes, being magical girls was suffering. Until the law of the cycles that is.

I actually really like your voice for this song. It has that pleasantly original flavour, sort of like when you hear a guy covering a song originally done by a girl. (No offense, haha; I really love your voice.) I think the intensity of your voice contrasts nicely with the kind of pleasant-sounding song, and it fits the seriousness of the anime very well. :)

Everyone keeps saying that "Oh, this anime tricks you, episode three was a total plot twist." And yes, the facade of a happy-go-lucky magical girl anime was misleading and yes, episode three is really where everything goes to hell, you do get a glimpse of what the anime is really like in the first episode. Literally, the first scene is Madoka running through a building that looks like an optical illusion and then opening a door and looking out at the ruins of an entire city floating in a purple sky while a girl (Homura) is getting beaten up by... something. We do later find out that this something is Walpurgisnacht, but at this moment in time, we have no clue what it is which makes it even creepier. Madoka is obviously terrified and while watching, we’re all pretty scared too because the first scene of this supposedly happy anime is literally a girl on the verge of death and mass destruction of an entire city! Sure, the scene ends when Madoka wakes up and then it's all fun and games for a bit resembling a normal anime. You know, main character runs out of the house with her late-to-school toast in her mouth, catches up to her friends, they have some talk about boys and are all happy. But then you see Homura again. Homura existing in real life confirms that Madoka's dream wasn't just a dream, it was real, and if Homura's here, you can bet destruction's on it's way. And if that's not enough, think of the first witch encounter that is in the same episode. It's confusing and scary, it looks like something out of a nightmare. Madoka and Sayaka are close to dying until Mami shows up and saves the day. The ironic thing about Mami defeating the witch is that Mami tries to make everything about fighting witches seem happy, exciting and flashy meanwhile the way Mami fights show you so much about darker, more serious nature of the show. Mami isn’t fighting with some cute little accessory or magic wand or tiara and shouting words as all of her attacks, (I mean, she shouts ‘Tiro Finale’ at the end of the battle but that’s not what I’m focused on) Mami is fighting with guns. Guns are always seen as a more mature and dangerous weapon and mature is exactly what the show is. Mami’s death certainly was frightening but it didn’t come out of nowhere. Mami’s death ends the facade of happiness in being a magical girl for Madoka, but it was already ending for us. There were plenty of hints before episode three. While Mami’s death is where shit hits the fan, it didn’t come out of the blue, it’s kind of a point of no return sort of thing. Like, “We’ve warned you what this is really like, so turn and run now or watch and don’t say that we didn’t warn you.” Don’t act like Mami’s death was the first and only warning that we got, accept that it was just the last.

This was an opening that I could never skip. I felt that it added even more heartbreak to an emotionally draining show. Its fucking dificult to stay alive for mahou shoujo's in this show, i mean, you gotta remember that the entire show takes place in a single month...
In all technicality, I think it's about a month and a half or so. We see Homura waking up in the hospital on March 15th, and Walpurgisnacht takes place on April 30th. But you're pretty much right; I just wanted to point this out in case you weren't aware because it means that Homura spent nearly 12 years trapped in time. (45 days or so and the creators stated that Homura's travels through time was approaching the 100 mark)
But yes, being magical girls was suffering. Until the law of the cycles that is.
