Oh my gosh,I worked in a gretsch guitar factory, and Mr Atkins had several guitars he endorsed,he played for us, while visiting. The coolest ever!! Made it look effortless!!
I was reading something on Facebook this morning about the Oak Ridge Boys and all of a sudden I had one of them thar epiphany things and it dawned on me what made Chet unique. While there are hundreds of other great fingerstyle players nowadays I think what made Chet so special was that the 4 fingers of his left hand were like the 4 individual voices of Joe, Duane, Bill, and Richard. It's like the sum being greater than the total of each singer's individual voice. Have I confused you? I confused myself. 😅😅😅
He just made it look SO easy, like as if the rest of us could do it with almost no effort. But that’s one sign of a truly great player. And you can see how much he loved playing.
It *was* easy for him; he had practiced enough, and he knew his way around the fret-board well. But it's also the first few months that are the hardest for any new player, especially with regards to fretting hand posture.
We all know Chet is amazing, but I think the most impressive thing is that there's an entire orchestra that we don't even see that are keeping up with all of the transitions.
The Bill Walker Orchestra that provided the back-up music on this iconic series. They're heard on Johnny Cash's recording of "Sunday Morning Coming Down".
Chet makes it look effortless. Jerry Reed and Roy Clark, great pickers both, always looked like they were working their butt off but Chet looks like he’s just walking home from church.
Guess that's why they called him Mr, Guitar. Roy Clark made e everything he did look hard (except sing balads). It was part of his schtick. Jerry's songs DID require alot of work because they were so complicated and difficult to play....for everyone except Chet that is.
@@lulimas Ignore this guy. I don't know what his problem is. He's just replying to these comments trying to bring Chet down. This was either in 1969 or 1970. Paul started working with Chet in 1975... I don't know why but he seems to think that Chet didn't actually play boom chick style guitar? Chet played the bass line with his thumb and the melody with his fingers. Tommy Emmanuel does it, Merle Travis did it and a lot more great players do it as well. Never have I heard anyone say what this guy is saying, he's just mad for no apparent reason.
What a great , talented , generous and kind man. It was Chet that gave Charlie Pride his first big break. Chet did not care abut such nonsense things as race and color . All he cared about was your talent . His close friends were Charlie Pride and Mark Knopfler . A black guy and a Jewish guy. Chet Atkins was a REAL man and decent human being. .
On the material point of view don’t understand the point of having an unplugged SM57 in front with no xlr cables into it. The player : chapeau bas ! A great great gentleman
It should be required of all young guitarist that they MUST watch any thing Chet Atkins did. Far too many are in it for the flash, believing that a song is 3 chords waiting for a shedding solo. THIS is how you play the guitar. Very few, and I mean VERY few, belong in his league. NO ONE is above it. He did more chord changes than anyone this side of Jimmy Page, in ONE song. Ridiculous!
if you go practice you too might be able to, instead of standing in some king of teenage awe over some normal (if not basic) guitar skills. (im not saying chet isnt one great guitarists, it's that particular part is far from being hard)
How times have changed. Chet is one of the most influential guitarists of all time but he'd be hard pressed to get a gig on these political and lefty modern late night shows.
yeah all those political and lefty late night shows, not like the apolitical Johnny Cash show what with it's strong conservative guests like Bob Dylan,Neil Young,Joni Mitchell,Arlo Guthrie and Pete fucking Seeger. Was used virtually by every guitarist who didn't have a classical training and wasn't playing let's say rhythm guitar in big swing bands, where you didn't need big chords for comping. Themoreyoudon'tknow
Finger picking is the way you play the banjo so around long before jimi but I'm love jimi. When it comes to guitarists doing it's credit to merle Travis and is called Travis picking and then chet tells the story about it but he added all fingers which merle didn't do. Also to the more you know guy hardly anyone played this way because everyone was classical trained and this was definitely not classical trained and mark knopfler was probably the first rock guitarist to play this way.
Hey, who is playing the bass notes? Is this like the clown car, where clowns come from nowhere. Listen and look and you will hear bass notes, lots of them when he is NOT playing any bass note strings. This must be a 'magic show', where we hear stuff that we THINK we see. So deceitful. Actually, Paul Yandell is playing the bass notes behind the curtain, but they didn't want you to know that, just wanted you to frustrate yourself in trying to duplicate something that was not 'duplicatable'. Sorry, Mr. Guitar.
Good God. Debbie Downer. There's one in every crowd. Yes, we all know about Paul. I don't hear any extra notes here that don't match Chester's fingers, but my eyes are probably better than yours. So's my pickin'.
Oh my gosh,I worked in a gretsch guitar factory, and Mr Atkins had several guitars he endorsed,he played for us, while visiting. The coolest ever!! Made it look effortless!!
How cool would that be!!! I own a replica of the "62" Gretsch. How I would have loved to have him play mine!

That was nice of Chet to honour Johnny with "I Walk The Line" at the end.

I can see why my grandpa loved and emulated his style, so flawless and beautiful

The last note was interesting
"Sandman, bring me some sand" 😂
That's how Chet sang it on his recordings.
It feels nice seeing him talk lol
🤣
That was a message for his roadie to bring him some sand for after the set
maybe its his childhood song 🤣
2:33 man, what a chord progression!
Indeed man!
I love the sound of a Gretsch especially played by a master.
Chet makes it look effortless. Jerry Reed and Roy Clark, great pickers both, always looked like they were working their butt off but Chet looks like he’s just walking home from church.
Because they did not have Paul Yandell accompanying them behind the curtain like CBA did. He fooled us all, including me and you.

Little bit of freight train thrown in there. What a master he was.
The laugh Johnny Cash immediately gives after Chet plays only a few notes of Walk the Line... priceless!

Such perfection is probably the best there will ever be. Nice to see a quick shot of Johnny Cash...Jack Baker NYC/NJ
Wonderful reminder of his greatness, and that's one of his best neckties ever
He would be a “gentleman“ in any occasion and in any area of the world.
How he gets the sound of a drum kit & a tuba out of that guitar astounds me!
Finally. I founded some more Mr. Sandman play by the Chet Atkins!!
