- We finally hit the road for the first time in the Baja for a shake down run to see how it does.
Levi and I find a few minor issues but nothing too bad that can't be addressed later down the road.
Thank you for watching.

Sounds strong and dependable.
Time will tell 😂
love to see you two working together... makes me thing of me and my dad GRHS.
Indeed! We usually have a great time working together. I hope he looks back and smiles.
Awesome, my idea of a shake down is making it to the gas station and back (LOL). Looks like a great little Baja, just shows you can do one without breaking the bank .
Yes sir, all was well to the gas station so we went further 😂
Plan on putting some miles on it soon!
If my bug has a first shakedown run as awesome as that I will be a very happy man 😁
You never know buddy, it might go better than that!!
@@VWJawbreaker I'm never that lucky 😂
@@bigalsvwratrod7346 neither am I and look what we just did 😂
Engine sounds smoooooooooth. Great work Gary and Levi!
It runs pretty darn good!
Have you ever thought about taking Dweezil off road?
@@VWJawbreaker Yeah man, sounds like it runs great! I took Dweezil offroad a couple times back in the day. I would need to clearance the front fenders to do anything halfway serious. Wouldn't mind light trail riding but Dweezil is in his golden years now.
@@HapticGarage hmm… sounds like a trip to Ocala would be fun one of these days.
@@VWJawbreaker Sounds fun, maybe when it cools off a bit? October-ish? Will be ready for some camping and cruising by then.
Sounds like the syncros are bad in the transmission. Dual kadrons and 1.25 rockers would wake that motor up. Nice video. Great to see someone share their passion with their kids.
That was my thought as well, we’ll just have to run it for now and take it easy.
I thought about a set of duals and possibly some ratio rockers…. However the push rod tubes are leaking, replacing those half of the top end is apart, rabbit hole says go the rest of the way and tear the engine apart. From there I could put in a c25 cam, 87’s and a set of duals. Nah, I’ll just run it for now and not go down any rabbit holes 😂
Hi, Garry& Levi, the first drive was approved and the engine sounds very broom, broom shifting of the gears went smooth and synchronized👍🏻, so all in all a great accomplishment fulfilled on the VW BAJA👏🏻🇺🇸, thanks for sharing, 👍🏻and the ride I did enjoy the trip in your living environment🇺🇸. stay safe and take care buddy. keep up the good work👍🏻 cheers🍺, and 🙏🏻☮️🇳🇴greetings. Hubertus.
Hello Hubertus!
We had a great first drive and look forward to future outings that we have planned. Thank you for coming along for the ride along,
Hope you enjoyed it.
Stay safe, we well and I appreciate you being here.
@@VWJawbreaker Yes, I did indeed.👍🏻🙏🏻
Good job, the re-start is a succes. Kris
It sure was a pretty good Baja.
Baja is looking and sounding great.
Thanks man, lots of work is paying off finally.
Nice work Gary, not too shabby. Loving the seats too. Nice to see the facial hair getting longer too
Thank you sir! It’s coming together quite well. The other little things can wait for a while so I can get back to the Sickxty soon.
Great first drive and no issues there, must be a good feeling.
You two did a good job to bring this Baja back on the road. Have a lot off fun with it 👍👍👍
Yes sir, great first drive. A few minor things to tweak but that’s to be expected. Lots of fun trips planned soon!
Congrats on the success of the first drive. Glad to see it running. Also, just read about your proceeds going to charity… very generous of you to do that 👏
Thanks man, it’s been a fun project with him.
Yes, it’s a simple way to give back and help others out. Even though it’s my channel, it’s not all about me but the community.
Gary , Thanks for taking us for a ride . Makes me wish I had one of my bajas back. I have three Bugs like you but no bajas . Maybe I need a fourth ?
Hey buddy! I needed another project like I need another hole in my head. However I couldn’t pass this one up and it’s helped reignite the spark for Levi so it was worth it. Who knows, maybe we all need more VW’s in our life 😂🤣
Congrats on the first run.
Thank you sir.
Nice!! You and your son have done a great job on getting that baja going, nice to see father and son teamwork and a cool bug
Thank you buddy, we’ve had a good time working on this together! Hope all is well with you and the family.
Congratulations! Looks like fun.👍
Thank you sir, nice to finally have a project on the road 😂
Very nice cruise. Every bug needs something. LOL, such is VW life. Get some smaller tires and skip 3rd gear shifting. Got that Mustie1 steering wheel knob. Enjoyed seeing you two on the road again.
Thank you sir for coming along with us.
It needs plenty of work but it’s safe and “reliable” to get us down the roads to some trails. We’ll tackle more of the little things down the road when time permits.
Great team effort 👍👍👍
Yes sir!! I’m always proud of that boy.
Hey Gary and Levi ! There is 2 ways to go on the trans. Get a used one or rebuild it . on the rebuild it option don't get discouraged if you have to go into it a few times . If you rebuild it you can trust it better ?
Hey buddy!
Well, either way a trans in’s t in the budget so we’ll just go as long as we can for now. We changed the gear oil before the test drive so that’s fresh and the old stuff wasn’t horrible.
I don’t have the tools for a trans rebuild but we’ll cross that bridge when it comes.
Sounds great
It sure does, thanks!
Great first drive. LOve the 2 lane country roads. Your temps are in line with mine. Your car has a lot of character and you did a great job getting everything to work. I always stress that folks get the new ride running and driving because it keeps that motivation flame lit. From here on out the credit card suffers......
Yes sir, first trip success! We’ll take it a little further here and there so we can do some traveling to the off road areas. I’m proud of my boy for doing as much work as he did on the Baja. The rest of the little things can wait till later on so we can enjoy it in the mean time. Luckily we don’t have too much into it parts wise, but you know these VW’s always cost us money 😂
Nice Job Bro Looking good well done
Thank you much!
Nice first drive. "Ocala" should definitely be on the list. :). Roof rack with some big KC lights...
Thank you sir. Ocala is on the list, have a few things up my sleeve when I can make it all happen.
Thought about a roof rack but it’ll have to be tall enough to clear the Sun roof opening.
Really Love your videos
Appreciate you being here.
Good work bro
Thanks, we’ve enjoyed the Baja so far.
Love it! My first car was a 62 Baja. You don’t need smaller rear tires. What you need is a set of duel 34 ITC’s, and some 1.4 rockers. JMO. Great car.
Ah very nice!
One thing though is the hearing between a ‘62 swing axle and the IRS that’s in this one. 31’s are a bit big for a stock engine and trans. We plan on taking it off road also and will need slower speeds and some crawling so smaller tires would help. I’d like to put dual carbs on but may need the intakes for something else.
That's so funny... I just had Chick-fil-A today😂 so enjoy some tomorrow or maybe today by the time I watch this video. Baja sounds goood👍
Be Good👍🇩🇪
Haha, the next day after the drive would have been a Sunday 😂
@@VWJawbreaker Chick-fil-A is good anyday😊
@@eduardorodriguez3262 indeed!
Let's get it brotha
We have more to come!!
Hey guys,
WOW this thing sounds like the real deal. 😳
But the radio looks crap.
Fix the radio and it'll be perfect. 🤪
So thanks for sharing
✌️ Peace from Melbourne Australia.
Hey buddy!
You’re right, we need a radio in one of our VW’s 😂
Have a great safe rest of your week 👍
Looks like u 2 are having a blast. I also working on a 66 baja named Mr Blueberry but I need some welding done. I need the package tray all welded in
In having the best time with him, proud dad moments for sure.
Best way to learn welding is to get in there and practice
Tiger bay preservation area would be awesome to take the baja. And or old Daytona brick road the trials back there would be awesome. 😎🤙
Totally forgot about that!!
Ya man. The drive would be cool and the trails even cooler with gps you have. 😎🤙
@@julionieves8090 now I have to figure out how to use it 😂😂
Very nice car!
Thank you, it’s not too shabby.
That thing is so cool great to hear the father son conversion. It must have been so tempting to take that right turn how much trouble could you have got in 😂
It sure was temping not to take it off road 😂
We have had a great time working on this together, possibly the second wind that I need for other projects.
Love that engine I have 1600
It seems to run pretty well so far. Need to put more miles on it and really shake things down.
I had the same grind going in to 2nd when I first got my bug. It's better after changing the transmission oil.
We did change the gear oil before the first drive. May try some Lucas additive.
@@VWJawbreaker It was a few weeks before I noticed it was better. Also try hesitating for a second (between 2-3 gear), not sure if that will help but it did for me.
@@timbering4744 I’ll give it a try!
Very nice, it looks so good I would try to put a 486 R&P, I always go with that, but if the budget won’t allow than I guess smaller tires, catch you soon Gary
Wish I could do a bus trans or a built up stock trans but smaller tires are much cheaper…. Plus these tires have some dry rot so they should be replaced.
Thanks for the info, hope you have a great weekend.
@@VWJawbreaker thank you Gary do the same, how’s the new pup doing
@@DesertRatFabrication she’s doing well… still working on some training but she’s great.
Check the gearbox oil level. BR
Already changed the trans oil 👍
She drives nice! Maybe installing an ODBII port with CPU to be able to put in a HUD with your phone so you know how fast you’re going? LOL! If only that would work! Of course using your phone GPS works too. ;-)
Haha!
I got the navigation off road gps working that’s in the dash and it has speed on it also!
Worse case they sell gps speedometers that I can put in the dash.
Outstanding!!! Sounds good!
Will there be a transaxle rebuild video in the future?
Oh man, I sure hope not…. Trans is not in the budget at all.
Thanks for the ride along Gary !! was that temp on the head?
Thank you for coming along!
I measure the head temp when we got back but I forgot what it was 😳
nice bAJA ,NEEDS 4:86 GEARS AND HEAVY AXELS GOOD JOB
Thanks buddy
nice
Thank you.
Is it gonna be his first car?
I’d throw two 235/75-15 on the rear….change the trans fluid and add a quart of Lucas and send it
Well, he thinks it’s going to be his car 😂
It has 31’s on it and if the rims aren’t too wide , 235’s would be perfect.
We did change the gear oil before the drive but some Lucas is a good idea 👍
Nice seats I want
They are pretty comfy actually.
@@VWJawbreaker Love your videos
@@reginaldlarry2962 thank you!
GREAT JOB GARY ! DO YOU KNOW WHAT THOSE SEATS ARE OUT OF ?
The seats are from Jegs, gs-1 I believe.
I’m running 28” tires in rear
As of last weekend I am now also 🤙
Scoots along nicely! Like the seats too. Any idea what they came off originally?
Thank you sir. The seats are from Jegs, think they are the GS-1.
@@VWJawbreaker Cheers!
Been watching you awhile and today I noticed you were in Deltona have to get together sometime
Check out the Facebook group Volusia V-Dubs. We try to have get togethers, cruises, etc. not much lately due to the heat.
Sounds like it's running well Gary! 2nd and 3rd are the most used an abused gears in any standard transmission. Have you already flushed and changed the transaxle fluid? I think a turbo would be better than smaller tires! :)! I'm sure smaller tires would help out a ton
Yes sir, it’s running great. We already changed out the gear oil, the old oil looked decent. Thinking about trying some Lucas in there but it’s most likely a syncro issue.
Turbo would be nice but it’s not in the budget unfortunately. Thought about an amr500 also but who knows lol
These tires have a little bit of dry rot so it’ll be getting smaller tires for sure.
Just gotta double clutch it and it won't grind
Are you sure your not a member of Z Z top singing group,Runs great can I get a autograph lol
Lol, my beard isn’t even close to long enough to be apart of ZZ Top 😂
Make sure you use premium gas
Usually always do!
👍👍👍👍

@@VWJawbreaker LOL Convertibles are often called bathtubs
@@lawrenwimberly7311 😂😂
That’s very cool! No speedometer? Fourth gear, F sharp equals 58 miles an hour.
Haha!
Not sure it’ll do 58 with those massive 31’s on the rear lol
I ended up getting the gps working that was installed in the dash 🤙
👍
Appreciate you buddy
Used transmissions are cheap for a regular beetle probably three or four hundred bucks used
Guess it depends on the area. Would rather save up and have one built instead of a used mystery trans.
big or small tires is like changing the r&p. using the phone gps system to track MPH?
Exactly. Cheaper to reduce the rear tire size than it is to change the gear box.
Using the phone app for speed since it doesn’t have a speedo.
What is the black air induct on the rear called & where do I get one ? P.S. I subscribed !!
It’s the rear part of a Baja kit.
I appreciate it, thank you 🤙
The more you drive it the better it will get; especially with fresh gas. Be gentle with the shifting with those big tires; your diff can die; ask me how I know. If the trans is whining it might be missing transaxle fluid and/or on its last legs.
She’s running great luckily.
Trans wise, it must be a synchronizer going out. We changed the gear oil and the old stuff looked decent.
@@VWJawbreaker If you have anyone that can repair the transaxle locally that’s cool but I believe Chirco and Rancho offer nice rebuilt units. A friend got one for his ‘67 and it works beautifully. Since it’s a swingaxle we had to install the stiffeners on the side plates to make sure they didn’t leak oil but since this one is IRS you don’t have that problem.
@@vayabroder729 there is someone about 2 hours or so away that I’ve heard good stuff about and I also have the guy in Michigan that built the custom trans for the Sickxty. He comes down to Florida here and there so no need to ship anything. There’s options, just not sure on the direction yet. We have time.
@@VWJawbreaker That’s great! You’re lucky; it’s getting difficult finding knowledgeable people that know how to work on this 1930’s technology 🤣😂
@@vayabroder729 that’s an understatement!!
Looks like a great test drive let me know what size tires you end up going with I was gonna change the tires on my white 70 baja to 235 75 r15 but if the bigger tires if rough on 1600 I'd rather be at an optimal size
Currently it has 31x10.5’s and if the rims will allow it I’ll drop down to a 235/75/15. Just need to measure the rims 👍
Ok cool! I just wanted to know because right now while I'm working on mine I have 195 65 r 15 I just bought the cheapest tires walmart had so I can push it around the yard!
@@JakeTaylor1646 that’s the size tire that I’m running in jawbreaker. Good size rear tire for a beetle that’s not a Baja.
@@VWJawbreaker 😆 I know that why they look so stupid looking but while I was pushing it around the yard they served their purpose
@@JakeTaylor1646 as long as they serve the purpose that’s all that matters!!
How small should be on 73 beetle rear front done
Depends on your setup, how you drive it and what you’re wanting to do with the beetle.
I like the Baja, what is the size and make of tires?
Rear tires are too big for that stock 1600. They are a 31x10.5x15. Not sure if the make off hand.
@@VWJawbreaker Thanks, I have had 205 x 15 in the rear but wanted to go bigger. What's the front? I think that would go all the way around. Class 11 look. He He .
@@davidteasdale1766 the fronts are 7.0x15. I’m probably dropping down to a 235/75/15 in the rear.
What app is that, that tells your speed on your cell phone?
It’s called GPS speed. Just search speedometer on the App Store, several free ones to choose from.
Thanks VWJ... I'll ck it out...
