This is the ultimate stoner musician song. Every band has been through this: You smoke and start jamming. It always comes when you least expect it, so you're not recording. You play the first thing that comes to your head, and it just so happens to be the best song in the world. The problem is you're stoned, so once you're done it's gone forever. And no one believes you. Genius.
Well, the fact that they ended the movie and TV show "The Pick of Destiny" with a scene where they made the BONG of Destiny should tell you enough about what stoner level these guys are.
Not forgetting most scenes in the movie are examples of good and bad trips XD
I think that's universal for creative types who smoke weed. Brian Posehn had a Comedy Central Presents special (1999, iirc) where he said "I can't write jokes when I'm high. I used to work for the record label that put out this album, and worked on the website for the band. And yes, I loved it from the first moment we spun that album in our office before it was even released to the public.
My work team and I rocked it daily for months on end, memorizing each and every song verbatim... however, I already knew some of the songs beforehand because I was a fan of the HBO special and had recorded it on VHS (many of the songs were already on that show).
I got to meet Jack Black briefly when we took an elevator ride together in that label’s corporate building. He even managed to make that elevator ride memorable because he is such a fun character. I remember that it was just us two inside of the elevator, and for the entire elevator ride, he was pretending to trying use all of his arm strength to open the elevator doors, as if we were trapped inside. He is seriously a big kid. Haha.

It is a tribute to stairway to heaven, if you watch the OG sketch on their HBO show they start theirs song with the opening chords from stairway .

Fun bit of trivia. Jack Black's mother, Judith Love Cohen was amazing. She worked for NASA and was one of the people that helped create the Abort-Guidance System that rescued Apollo 13. She went into labor while working on the problem and took a printout of the problem to the hospital. There she solved the problem then gave birth.

The name Tenacious D came from sportscaster Marv Albert. He said during a basketball game "the Knicks are showing some tenacious D tonight." D meaning defense. Jack thought that sounded like a rapper name.
Tenacious D have been certified 2x platinum in 2013, selling 600,000 (equivalent). So very real, performing live still. They have a bunch of songs I'm sure censors would yank, you can find them to listen to. Like Kielbasa or FHG to write it out would flag this.

I’m 43 years old and just found out TODAY after watching this video that Tenacious D is not a rapper, as I have believed all these years. My friend of 40 years laughed her ass off when I shared that realization. I have been living a lie! Note: I never actually ever heard a song by Tenacious D, hence my confusion.

It took a while for Tenacious D to grow on me, but eventually I understood the brilliance. There is absolutely no denying the talent here, and while this may not be the greatest, it's one seriously kick ass song. Not to mention one of the best videos ever made.

Saw an interview with Dave Grohl somewhere wherein he said that doing this was one of the highlights of his career. Granted, he had that famous smile of his the whole time he was saying it, so it may have been true. That man is one of the coolest dudes on the planet and there's no one that doesn't like the guy. May he live a thousand years!

Fun fact, 1995, instead of having an after work cigarette with my coworker, we watched VHS recorded episodes of "Tenacious D" and "Mr Show". We replaced the cigarette break habit with 30 minutes of those shows and thank god it actually worked. I don't smoke now but I would be lying if I said I didn't want one - especially when watching your great reactions!
