I don't understand how I'm supposed to sleep with my curly hair. My curls looks awesome the day I wash it but once I sleep my curls frizz and loose the curl and I don't know how to keep it together
Mine too
You can use satin cushion covers there will be less damage to ur curls ...
You gotta refresh your curls in the morning
@@liveandletlive497 how do you do that
@@annapatata6258 - If you've slept with your hair in a "pineapple" on a silk or satin pillowcase, pull the scrunchy out, let it rest for about 20 minutes, then use a fine mist of water to gently dampen your hair if needed. If you did mist it, scrunch it, and if needed add a tiny bit more of gel. "Manes by Mell", "Curly Susie", "Swavy Curly Courtney" and several others have Day 2 videos. Hope that helps!
I know this is an old video but the eyemakeup suits you alot
Yeah I almost jumped ship on this video top find a tutorial on the makeup 🤣
Yes !!! I deep condition my hair every weekend too! I also deep condition my husbands & both of my daughters hair on the weekends too! My daughters hair are turning into mine so I'm making sure their hair is healthy. Plus they like to do stuff mommy does. They r 4 and 6 years old. It's fun for them !!!
Aww that’s great to hear!
Just as long as you're not over conditioning. Sounds like you're doing it TWICE a week? Sounds like too much to me
***UPDATE: I no longer use DevaCurl products. Please see my more recent videos for my current products***
Thanks for watching! Head over to the blog post for a links to all the products I showed: www.getglammedup.co/2019/03/video-how-to-deep-condition-curly-hair.html
Thanks, Gena!! Lots of great information. Some of it I was already familiar with and some not. 🌞
When ever I pineapple my hair with a scrunchie it always dents my hair. I don’t use a hair tie I use an actual scrunchie. I also only wrap it once and it still happens. What can I don’t to stop this?
Invest in a silk/satin hair cap. It works wonders!
Or use a silk/satin scarf and wrap that around your head
I've been using a Puff Cuff (thepuffcuff.com) instead of elastics or scrunchies and I love it. It doesn't pull or leave indentations in my hair. For nighttime I pull the pineapple/ponytail really far forward so I'm never sleeping on my curls. I found that the silk cap never stayed on my head all night and I was never able to tie a silk scarf to stay either.
I sleep with a boho bandu and it helps my hair. I just make it to wear it’s all the way stretched out and the plop my curls on the top of my head
What edge control keep edges moist?
It’s all just too expensive tho wish I just had straight hair tbh
It’s Me honestly!
Tillie Chitta it’s so annoying! Especially when your hair doesn’t grow
It’s Me I have straight hair and honestly don’t like it haha
Same, but people who have straight hair wish that they have curly hair!
@@sadimnotmikasa You can use a regular conditioner. I may just doctor it up with a little olive oil. I literally use Aussie Moist conditioner and it's 5 bucks. 30 mins, my hair is soooo soft. CHEAP. Tresemme Botanique for your silicone free ladies. 5.99! Curly hair doesn't have to be expensive. :D
I have a heating cap and didn't even know it could be warmed up lol thank you!!!!
I have been loving and learning so much from this series. Thank you.
That's great! Thank you for watching :)
Hey gorgeous! Just wanted to say thank you for all your videos, they are my go-to guide in starting my CGM journey 💜 So far I haven’t seen any on scalp massagers and I was wondering if you ever tried any? If so, which ones would you recommend and how often should we use them?
im starting my transition and my hair is so flat from my roots why and what can I do to bring back volume and curls back
I’m just starting too. A lot of the videos I’ve watched they say to kinda push up and clip with spring clips at the scalp to keep volume
Really I'ma try that. It's like my hair feels healthy and some of my curls are there but not all of them am I doing something wrong? I even cut my own hair I did somewhat a big chop or is it the process of the transitioning
leslie rutiaga apparently transitioning is ROUGH. It depends on the products you’re using also. Make sure they’re sulfate free, and silicon free for sure. Also try putting products on your hair in the shower with dripping wet hair then squeeze out the excess moisture. When you get out “plop” with a towel
Clarifying can also help so much with roots that are weighed down and flat. It will remove silicone build up that you might have that has made the curls looser at the root.
You might be using products that are too heavy for your hair or you're using too much product or both. My big mistake in the beginning was using too much gel to keep in the frizz (I have dense thick hair). I was raking the product into my soaking wet hair. It would take forever to dry and because of the water and gel my hair was being weighed down. Not to mention I have a straight hair cut, so what ends up happening is that the curls weigh down my roots. If you want volume you might want to consider going to a salon to get a layered cut. BE SURE TO FIND A CURLY HAIR STYLIST. Sometimes, just because they say they know how to cut curly hair, doesn't always mean they're telling the truth, unfortunately.
Omg your hair is so similar to me, other than the fact that I’m mixed so I’m black. But I finally found someone whose hair looks quite similar to mine. What type would you say your hair is?
I have such a mixture! Most of my curls are 3B. Some are 3A.
RWH H I’m mixed with black too! I wish my hair was as curly as this though 😭😭
Gena M Thank you so much for responding! ❤️
Hopefully deep conditioning will help me. My hair just keeps getting frizzy even when I smooth it out. But then when I scrunch, it becomes all frizzy again. :(
same, i see your comment was a year ago, is it better now
I have an 8 year old granddaughter that has issues with brushing her curly hair, do you recommend something outside of deep conditioning that will assist us in brushing her hair without issues? :)
I got a volume brush from family dollar and it works great on my hair, the pull isn’t as bad as normal ones
I used to have curly hair just like yours, but i don't know what happened and suddenly in around 2017 it started getting wavey and dry and now it's not even close to how it was.
i currently straighten my her 4-5 times A YEAR but i didn't straighten it that much when that happened and i wash my hair almost everyday.
i hope you can help me get my curls back :)
btw i am 14 years old.
Hey! I’m not a professional of any kind but I read that hair changing patterns is natural in this stage that you’re in, it’s part of going through puberty and all that. It eventually gets better so you gotta be patient! Good luck♥️
I'm the same age and my hair has done the exact same. It's so annoying! Try to not wash your hair as much if you can because the natural oils are really good for your hair. Washing it that often can do more damage than good. If it gets greasy really fast try putting some baby powder on the roots if you don't have the time to wash it.
Sunset Mermaid I wash it once every two days now because I usually can’t style it without washing. It’s honestly so frustrating!!
X Xcuseme Thanks for letting me know that. Now I have a little bit of hope 😅
@@noura9368 I usually just throw my up in a high pony tail or in a plait 😂😂
Thanks Gena.
Thank you! This video is very helpful.
Thank you this is helpful 😊❤🥰
I just started this process. Not super strict on the CGM yet, might change that. But I've bought quit a few products and tools (denman brush, etc.) so far. Might wait just a bit before buying more. I bought a few Shea Moisture products but I'm not sure if my hair is liking it. My hair seems to like things fine the first time but after that not anymore. I just had a wash day my hair tangled after the Shea Moisture deep treatment mask, kept tangling during styling, and was frizzy after. I have Shea Moisture curly shampoo and conditioner and the curl enhancing cream. I think I should get different shampoo and conditioner but I'm just hesitant to pick ones that won't work and waste more money. My hair is wavy/curly probably 2B/2C and thick. I usually have halo frizz.
Long story short wondering about recommendations of products, I think I should try ones with more moisture. I also need a good leave in conditioner. Thanks!!
Omg I have the same hair type and it’s also think and frizzy. Are Shea moisture products good?
@@alexagranados9291 I think they are overall! I started doing squish to condish after combing conditioner through I think it made a big difference. I think I’ll wait on buying new shampoo and conditioner for now slow down on buying new products. I also think I have breakage that needs to grow out from wearing my hair up too tight with regular hair ties
Hey Gena, I've got a question! Would you recommend clarifying and deep conditioning on the same day, or would that be too much for the hair? It'd be easier on my schedule to knock those out together lol. Also, is it okay for curly hair to deep condition with organic coconut oil, or olive oil? Thank you so much!
It’s recommended to deep condition after clarifying your hair as it can make your hair dry.
@@LouLen10 what does clarifying mean?🥰
What does clarifying mean?
@@MunroMcLaren it means to use 'clarifying shampoo' to remove buildup in hair
@@MunroMcLaren you wash you hair with a “clarifying shampoo “ ( sulfate but no silicones on it )☺️
Hello ladies, I need a suggestions or advice. I just found out that my hair type is curly. My hair is been frizzy and dry for years. I’m planning to start buying hair products for curly hair. Also, I wanted to buy deep conditioner but I don’t know which one to get. What is the difference between hair mask and deep conditioner? What shampoo and conditioner brand is good for natural curly hair? Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!
We don't know the POROSITY level of your hair. Therefore cannot recommend products. Try different deep conditioners that you think will work for your hair type and porosity. That's the only way you'll know what works and what doesn't is if you experiment with products mainly based on your porosity. No one can really tell you what will work for your own hair type
Hi what is the difference between a mask and deep conditioner? Also does your hair have to be clean when applying the mask/deep conditioner? Or can it be applied to damp hair that needs washing? Thank you so much
Mask and deep conditioner are the same things, just different terms often used interchangeably. I prefer to apply a deep conditioner to clean damp hair so it can fully penetrate without styling products in the way. Then when you rinse that moisture and goodness stays versus shampooing it out if you were to deep condition prior to shampooing. However some people who struggle with deep conditioners weighing down their hair can try doing it before shampooing.
@@GenaMarie that makes a lot of sense thank you so much your answer/videos cleared it up for me. I’m trying to restore my curls after bleaching and dying red/purple 😩 do you think olive oil is beneficial?
Super helpful video! Thanks, Gena!
Thank you!
Is it okay if I diffuse my hair after deep conditioning??
Georgia Capachione the videos I’ve watched that diffuse say to use on the lowest heat and lowest speed
This video helped but my hair got really frizzy when I rinsed out the conditioner. What was the cause for that? Another thing, my hair gets really curly at the bottom but at the top, it’s smooth and doesn’t curl.
Hello Gena, your curls are amazing😍
But how do I know if the product contains protein?
Look for the word protein in the ingredients. I also have a video all about protein overload which includes a list of proteins and the best ones for certain hair types.
@@GenaMarie the label doesn't always come out and say protein in the ingredients though 🤦🏼😂 for a beginner they would probably be confused on certain words like quinoa, amino acids ECT
After I deep condition and wash it out, do I still use the leave in conditioner?
It’s optional ☺️
I do because my hair tangels.
Do you still add gel after washing out the deep conditioner? Or skip it?
Yes, curl cream and gel after the deep conditioner is rinsed out.
When you deep condition your hair at night and wash the deep conditioner off, do you style it right away or wait for the morning ?
Most deep conditioners advise that you use their treatment on clean hair (meaning low-poo or shampoo if CGM doesn't work for you, NOT co-wash though). So if you're cleaning your hair (as advised) I would say it's best to add products right away after deep conditioning so as to keep your curls healthy or your hair (depending on your curl type) might become undefined through the night if it doesn't have any products in it to help keep shape.
And then all that time put into deep conditioning would be all for naught.
i was born with curly hair but up until the age of 6 i got a haircut and i started losing my curls. i am now 16. my baby hairs and only a few strands in the front part of my hair is curly now. the rest of my hair is like in between wavy/straight. is it possible for my hair to go back to being curly? someone pls help me bc i have no idea :(
Hi. A lot of babies may be "curly" bc of how wispy and thin the hairs are. However as they grow up and they grow through hormonal changes, their hair may just turn wavy. Sorry.
I don't think @sweetyfri is correct on that assumption, because based on what I know It is possible for your hair to go back to being curly if you're using the right products. For many of our curly friends, CGM is just not meant for them and so it takes years of trial and error to find the right products to make their hair natural again. If you wanna start your curly hair journey, you're going to need to throw away all expectations, because, sis, reality is cruel.
How much do you shed, can you show your shedding in the video. Because my hair is thin just like you and I always get scared to wash it because I lose a bit of hair that's why...
Hey, if you have long curly hair it's okay to shed. But if it's short you can go bald easily. Do not worry if your hair is long and you shed. Shedding is also *VERY* natural.
My hair is always really dry and frizzy after I rinse out the deep conditioner. Should I leave some of it in instead of rinsing completely? Idk why that happens.
Mine does that too. It usually means its dry and I need to deep condition with a good quality moisturizing mask.
use cold water and mix in a little apple cidsr vingar it makes ur hair really soft and smooth
@@teleportingpotatoe you don't want to use that after a deep conditioning mask. You only want to use that on days that you clairify. It would be better to use BEFORE a deep conditioner not after
Can you use a shower cap?
So I can use any mask? Like I have one that says keep it for 2 mins can I just use it
lol, once I try this it will be my first time. I hope i don't mess up.
Oh btw. My hair is so nice now I love how it turns out.
can the « deep conditioner » be a regular conditioner? obv sulfate and silicone free bc well rn stores arent open but just for now can i deep condition my hair with regular hair conditioner?
Add a spoon of olive oil or coconut oil to your regular conditioner and it'll be a deep conditioner!
Oil might weigh your hair down if you have fine hair. You could use a regular conditioner, but since it's not formulated for deep penetrating into the cortex (lol) of your hair strands, it won't really make much of a difference. Also, if your conditioner is mainly for moisturizing and not strengthening/restoring protein, then you might end up over moisturizing and end up with limp curls.
@@meowmeow7188 ok thank you!
@@rm0063 oh yea? I think my conditioner is for moisturizing, ouch haha. Well i will check all that, thank you!
Thanks Gena 😊😍
I just wish my hair can tell me what it needs..
Can I do this with a perm?
Thanks so much!!
Im confused. So on wash day, do I replace my conditioner with the deep conditioner or use both? Or do I not use deep conditioner on wash day?
Why would you use two conditioners? You don't want to do that because it's pointless. When you do deep conditioner day, you use deep conditioner only because like I said, it's pointless to use a deep conditioner and a regular conditioner unless you want to over condition your hair and put it into moisture over load. You do not need your regular conditioner when deep conditioning. Also you don't want to use deep conditioner every single time you shower either. On days when you're not deep conditioning, then you use your regular conditioner. I thought it was common sense not to use two conditioners back to back. 🤦🏼 and only you know your own hair and can determine when you deep condition. Some say once a week, but I think that's over doing it. I deep condition twice a month to be honest, at the most, three times a month. Maybe that's too little, but it's really up to you. Also, it depends on what your hair type is on whether or not you want protein in your deep conditioner or not. That's where it really gets confusing and I'd say to do your own research. If you have low porosity hair, you'll have protein sensitive hair and will want to be careful with protein. But I'll leave that out of this because I'll just confuse you more
I got two masks for try they are not providing me the moisture I want
I have the same type hair you have
May I ask what masks brand you're using 😉
Malika Lamara she’s using Deva Curl
But Devacurl has a class action lawsuit against them for causing hair loss and curl damage to 2,000+ customers.
What products are you using? Are both deep conditioners advertising themselves as "moisturizing"? If so, then you might be over moisturizing and you might wanna consider balancing it out with some protein deep conditioners that often advertise themselves as "restoring" or "strengthening."
Also, make sure you're following the directions on the label. If it says to apply on CLEAN hair they mean, hair with no product, implying you need to clarify/shampoo before applying the deep conditioner. Also, if the label states to leave it on for 30 minutes, leave it on for ONLY 30 MINUTES or else you'll be overdoing it and damaging your hair.
Hi, does deep conditioning help with hair loss?
Deep conditioning mostly helps to moisturize your hair and prevent breakage. Some deep conditioners can reduce shedding, but I don’t know of any specifically for hair loss.
If you need help with hair loss I recommend trying onion juice, it may have a strong smell but it gives good results and you can get the smell out, at least watch some videos on it and think about giving it a try. I really hope it helps you.
Samira Halafi never heard of that. I have thin hair and will research onion juice. Thank you.
Castor oil to scalp and massage gently, leave for a while ...just a warning it is a thick oil. do regular gentle scalp massages for 10mins daily etc. Research ayuvedic techniques and see what works for you. Make sure your taking enough vitamins. Eating well and trearing your hair like silk.
black jamaican castor oil and red pimento oil help with hair loss
I deep condition when my hair becomes a frizzy mess and is dry 😌
Thank you so much! It included all the information i wanted
Whenever I pineapple my hair and wrap it the scarf and scrunchie always fall off while I'm sleeping. How could I stop this from happening ?
Hmm, I recomend to tie it *PROPERLY.* then, before sleeping, I recomend to put your hair on your pillow more than beside you, it works properly for me. I also recommend you to brush your hair before you sleep and sleep with braids. Braids help a lot.
Hope this helped
Does regular conditioner work for this too?
No it does not. Regular conditioner isnt as concentrated with the ingredients. Deep conditioners are instructed for you to leave them in for a reason because they are more moisturizing than regular conditioner
I haven't watched the video yet, but there are so many comments asking this and asking that. I'm assuming this video isnt very detailed nor did it explain much at all with the amount of questions going on in the comments. Hopefully there's a remake of this video some where, because it seems like A LOT was left out with as many unanswered questions as there are, so if you're a beginner, probably should look for a different video or do your own research. I've also seen terrible advice in the comment section that will probably do some damage if you follow, or just not do anything beneficial at all for your hair. 🤦🏼
Thanks 🥰

Tʜɪs ɪs ᴛʜᴇ ᴍғ ᴛᴇᴀ hmmm you could buy them online or when you do go to the store buy them there but i would just say for now since you don’t have anything just when you wash your hair normally wash downwards, that gives volume to your hair, also when you’re applying conditioner scrunch your hair with the conditioner in while it’s wet and you may see some curls. also when drying use a cotton t shirt and scrunch your hair with it then leave your hair to air dry. if the curls do show DONT BRUSH YOUR HAIR BECAUSE IT WILL MAKE YOUR HAIR FRIZZY! instead use your fingers to detangle.
also i recommend watching “how to do overnight curls” and you’ll see plenty if videos for your hair type that do work. hoped this helped !

I’m kind of struggling with deep conditioning. Is it a major factor that your hair is cleansed before adding deep conditioner? Like do you have to cleanse it with shampoo before deep conditioning because I’ve started deep conditioning and therefore I apply the deep conditioner on damp hair the night before my wash day and leave it overnight. When I wake up I take a shower and do my wash day where I wash out the deep conditioner with shampoo and then I condition. Is that wrong or can that work? Also is it bad to deep condition for more than 12+ hours? I hope someone can help me out xx
I prefer to shampoo before deep conditioning. Deep conditioners basically replace your regular conditioner for when you need extra moisture. You can do it before washing, if you hair tends to get weighed down easily. If not, I would do it after so you’re not washing away the good moisture from the deep conditioner. Also, I don’t recommend sleeping with your hair wet because it can be bad for your scalp to stay damp for too long.
Gena Marie Aaah okay, thank you so much for answering! My curls actually tend to get weighed down in the back which is super annoying because it looks so strange compared to the front. I’ll try before washing and after washing to see if I can spot any differences. Again, thanks! xx
