Thoroughly enjoyed that interview! It's ridiculous how educated Russ is! The studious approach to drums is something I've always copped out on, thus my limited ability. I admire his capacity to play anything inside out, upside down, backwards, AND be able to read and write it all out note for note! I have to admit as professional and candid as the interview was, it is also great advertising for Mapex. Dollar for dollar they're hard to top, and sound great. The Saturn V's can go toe to toe with ANYTHING out there. I will be picking up his signature Versatus snare. That's definitely an elite drum with a lot of advanced thinking behind it. I also appreciate the fact that he actually plays that drum. Far too often a drummer releases a signature snare drum and then is never seen using it. No artificial endorsement here with Russ! Obviously he stands behinds or sits behind, rather, the brands he uses. Being a pert of the R&D team definitely demonstrates his knowledge, passion and belief in the instruments he plays as well.

Super excited to hear the new Arrival stuff, Russ! Can't wait to see what else comes from Mapex, with your help. The Saturn V is really a big step up, and your snare is one I'll be picking up sooner or later. Love the interview!

Mapex is cool in my book. Their badge, logo and lugs need redesign though. They could use some refining...

Love the interview but Mapex wasn't even close to being one of the first manufacturers to do "hybrid" shells. Hello, Gretsch 3-ply from the 50's!

Gretsch, Ludwig, Slingerland, Leedy, Rogers they were all doing the three ply hybrid shell decades before Mapex was even founded. I realize that these terms are not synonymous BUT they weren't the first or even one of the first. I'm not bashing Mapex drums, they rock. I'm not bashing Russ, he's an amazing player and educator. The fact is, he misspoke. NOW, there was an era where the majority of manufacturers went to a one tree species shell and Mapex was one of the first to bring BACK the popularity of the hybrid shell.
