  • Is Minoxidil foam better than Minoxidil liquid? Dr Bhatti explains in detail about the advantages and disadvantages of Minoxidil foam vs. liquid formulations. The pros and cons of the two forms of Minoxidil are discussed so the community knows the which is better- Minoxidil foam or Minoxidil liquid.
Minoxidil is an FDA approved evidence based scientific medication to improve hair growth and slow down the hair loss process.
Alongwith Finasteride, Minoxidil is the mainstay of treating hair loss from androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness.
Inspite of the fact that its used for hair loss treatment is over 35 years old, researchers are still skeptical about the exact mechanism of its action to promote hair growth.
When we talk of differences between the liquid and foam forms as far as acceptance goes, convenience is key!
Also, if your skin is sensitive, the foam formulation will be your best bet. This is since it does not contain propylene glycol. However in clinical practice I have seen that the liquid form has better results so perhaps it absorbs better due to the disturbance in epidermal integrity caused by propylene glycol.
Consumer use studies tell us that Minoxidil users generally rate foam on a higher scale due to its ease of application, quicker absorption, lack of spill or dripping onto face and ease of fitting it into one’s daily routine. On the other hand, the liquid form of Minoxidil causes hair to feel greasy and leaves a residue.
Foam can be easily applied to a larger area of thinning or balding. But the liquid form is easier to apply to the scalp when you have long hair which may catch a lot of the foam before it reaches the scalp.
However in the end, like most things, it all boils down to user preference and most patients prefer the foam form of Minoxidil.
I personally recommend those with sensitive skin to start with 2% liquid and graduate to 5% liquid after 2 weeks. If they have significant itching and discomfort, I ask them to changeover to the foam formulation. Also, since it causes less greasiness and residue accumulation, it is better accepted for esthetics. Those with long hair and parting issues should use the liquid version if skin is normal.

Great information. I have long hair and been using foam. I notice that a lot of foam get stuck in hair and also leave a greasy residue. I will try the liquid to see the difference.
UPDATE: I've been using it for a week now. It doesn't irritate at all. Much better than foam for direct application. As for result only time will tell. I've been using 5% foam for about 5 months now and I haven't seen any noticeable results yet. But I applied it on semi-yet hair for awhile. Only dry hair from now on.

Amazing explanation differentiating the two forms of minoxidil. I prefer 5% foam because it is less irritant on the scalp. I tried liquid minoxidil and my hair seemed very dusty, itchy, and was hard to comb. Foam is double the price and has less efficacy than the liquid, but no itching.

    • @hairtransplantinindia

There is absolutely no use applying Minoxidil over 5% or taking Finasteride above 0.8 mg . The dose response curve gets flat after this dose.Taking additional concentrations just raises incidence of side effects without benefiting even an iota in measure. Eventually it will lead to poor compliance due to the side effects. The field is commerce driven and one-upmanship at the cost of the gullible patient with hair loss is the norm today. So stay alert!

I used propecia for 8 months, but because of its price, ı switced to the proscar and divide it by 4 for about 2 month. (Using 3.75 mg per week) I started minoxil 3-4 weeks ago and I use it once a day. Hair loss has increased recently in the shower and in bed, and most people say that it loses its effect when proscar splits. My liver enzymes were high, it dropped a lot after proscar passed, I wonder if proscar has lost any effect because of splitting Or is it pouring minoxil, which I use once a day, I am very confused, what is your opinion sir?

I had been taking 1-2.5mg f finasteride and .5mg of dutasteride daily for about 6 years, but I was just told dutasteride only needs to be taken maybe 3-4 times per week due to shelf life. Also, do I need to bump up my dutasteride or finasteride dosage since I’ve started to recede some more after about 7 years…? I sincerely appreciate your help in advance! Thank you!

I was reading a medical article for FPHL and they were saying its best to use 2% topical solution twice daily and half a cap of 5% monoxide foam (so as to avoid unwanted side effects like excessive hair growth in other parts of the body.) I noticed with me, the 5% topical solution was causing edema to my stomach and face and I stopped using it. If I follow the above regimine, 1ml of monoxidle 2% in the morning and evening, when do I use half a cap of the 5% foam, is it in middle of the day? I don't find that the 2% minodile alone is doing much for me anymore. I am trying to avoid the edema so I cannot use the liquid 5%. But do I use the 5% foam in middle of the day?

    Hair transplantation - Minoxidil
Question: I have Norwood 2. I have been taking Finasteride for a year, but unfortunately, I have not seen much improvement. Initially, I only took 1mg three times a week, but now I take 1.25mg daily. It hasn't gotten much worse, but it hasn't gotten any better either. I have a hair transplant appointment in October. Im thinking of going on Minoxidil and my doctor said I could try it out. However, I read on the internet that Minoxidil should be stopped for about 7 days before and after the hair transplant. My question is, should I start using Minoxidil now and stop using it for two weeks in 5 months because of the hair transplant? Or should I wait until after my hair transplant to start using Minoxidil? On the one hand, I want to stop my hair loss and promote hair growth as soon as possible, but on the other hand, I am afraid that the back-and-forth use of Minoxidil could do more harm than good. Or is stopping Minoxidil for 2 weeks not a big deal? Thank you in advance.
To clarify, my concern is that if I start using Minoxidil now to achieve fuller hair, the doctor may use weakened hair from my donor area that has been treated with Minoxidil for the hair transplant, resulting in potential hair loss at the front in 3-6 years. Therefore, I wonder if would be more prudent to wait until after the hair transplant to ensure that the implanted hair is strong and stable before beginning Minoxidil use. How long should I wait after the hair transplant before using Minoxidil?

From personal experience, I can confirm that the liquid version works much better in terms of results than the foam version. But that white dandruff-like residue that you get from the liquid version is annoying to the next level. It will make you look like you have severe dandruff problems. I'm not a big fan of the foam version but still using it because it doesn't leave that white residue. Because when you're in the office or visiting someone's home you don't wanna show dandruff-looking residue on your shoulder lol. It's embarrassing.

    great content once again
I have a question that my doctor's don't seem to be able to answer
I have some acne scars and psoriasis on my head so I have to take some medication to remove them. which is accutane. that medication is known to cause hair loss or weaken hair for some people (maybe it's for all people but the reason not all notice it much is cause they have too good hair genetics to bother with some thinning)
many sites say the hair loss it causes is only temporally and long term makes no difference but some random people disagree. the main issue I believe is it makes your skin extremely dry and that's what kills the hair
my question is, if it's only temporally will it be temporally for a balding man too? or will it be mostly permanent for me since my hair is alrdy weak and it might completely kill them until I finish the medication ( which takes 6-12 months )
I've had a 4k hair transplant 5 months ago and I'm on fin and topical min

      @hairtransplantinindia  2 роки тому +1

I am a plastic surgeon and not a dermatologist so skin conditions is not my area of interest. Surgery for baldness is.. But it is common knowledge that Accutane or isotretinoin causes hair loss due to a variety of factors- since it is a form of Vit. A and too much can cause thinning, it has an interplay with various hormones and this can cause shedding in those susceptible to androgenetic alopecia. Hair loss with accutane in those with the baldness gene can have permanent hair loss. In those who do not have androgenetic alopecia will have shedding but hair will return.

Hello ! The first time I used Minoxidil my hair grew and my scalp was not dry. I took a break and returned to Minoxidil 2% for the second time. Please advise me, I have been using Minoxidil 2% for about 10 months, at first the hair loss decreased, scalp became dry, short hair falls out. Now the hair loss has increased. Is there any sense to change to Minoxidil foam 2% or not? Maybe 2 % does not work anymore, that's why hair is falling out and we should switch to 5 % and how to get rid of dry scalp? Thanks !

The first time I used Minoxidil, it helped and did not dry my scalp. The second time I used Minoxidil, the hair loss decreased, but the short hair fell out occasionally and the scalp became dry. Now the hair loss has increased. I do not know what to do to switch to Minoxidil foam 2% or 5% liquid or foam? Could you please advise me?

If your skin is not too sensitive, use lotion. The wrapper inside the container has explained the application in great detail with pictures.

The shedding that happens on stopping its topical applicaion, will occur only in the area it is applied to.
