Just did the install in about 30 minutes thanks to your video (did the wire foam in the house as soon as the kit came). Had the same issue as another person mentioned with clearance of the Head unit and the speedometer trim but that is easily fixed by pulling the speedometer trip off slightly. Thank you for the instructions made this job so easy and quick.
Had this same issue on my 2017
anyone else watch the first few minutes of this, and then convince yourself that you don't actually need AA or CP? lol
Opposite here. I only needed two tools!
Ha ha! I was about to order the parts but this video got me rethinking. You can always use your cell phone navigation instead. Right!
As soon as he started dismantling the center console 😭
Right? All this to have a barely larger version of your phone on the dash? lol. Cmon. Especially in 2022. It’s less than another 200$ to have the dealer install it. What a nightmare.
@@Msigw That's true man😂😂😂
The firmware update was the longest part. Thanks for this!
will this void the warranty?
Don't know.
Just got a 2018 cx5. There’s no way in hell I’m paying $400+ for the dealer to upgrade me to AA/CP. I’m getting the kit and using this video to install it. It’s the best instructional video I’ve found so far.
I hear you, but as someone who has done a ton of disassembly on cars for years, I'd rather just pay the dealer and be done with it. Sometimes it's just not worth the hassle.
In 2022, I just had it done to a 2018 CX5 for less than 360$, by my local Mazda dealer.
@@Msigwthanks for the numbers. I just bought a 2017 cx5, was scratching head after watching video. If the set cost around $90, they are charging $270. I will check my local mazda dealer.
Great video. I got the install done using just the video. Only difference is that I started the USB cables at the head unit so I was threading them down which mean no coat hangar. Much easier.
Great video, really appreciate you taking the time to do this walk through! A couple of thoughts: when taking off the very first trim panels (the two on either side of the center console) you really have to yank on those things and it helps to switch to the passenger seat when doing the righthand one to get more leverage. Also, the display panel is easy enough to get out but a huge PITA to get back in! I actually had to pry up the right side of the trim that goes around the speedometer in order to correctly fit the display back into it's housing
So glad my CX-3 2021 had this thing already pre-installed from factory... It took me nearly 2 hours to install a dashcam (front and back). Can't imagine how long it would've taken me to do this...
OMG, why would Mazda just not put a compatible USB hub into cars at the factory. They knew AA/CP would be coming eventually. Crazy!!
Well its been the same part since 2015 and android auto/carplay wasn't planned, and they only realized after google released technical info and that they would need higher amperage output from the hub.
mb3224 I just wrote that lol before reading your comment. It’s so TRUE!
was about to ask same question!!! Its a shame
Simple extra money for main dealers.. because the install is not for the novice
:) wondering if the thumbs-down are aimed at this video or Mazda, can't say I'm looking forward to the installation dealer or self done, but not having android auto is my biggest frustration with this otherwise awesome car, why isn't Mazda covering the cost, especially for 2018s, a lot them are under a year old
This looks like a royal pain to install.
Thank you for this incredibly useful video! I managed to install the new USB hub without any issues in under two hours. Wouldn't have done it with just the installation instructions...
Yeah, I think I will just go ahead and pay my local Mazda shop to do this for me. I’d break every clip in that car.😅
Wow! I guess I see why Mazda charges almost $500 for it. Great job!
Can you tell me the parts needed? I have 2017 CX5, how do I upgrade the firmware? Thanks for the awesome video, I want to try as well.

Another satisfied customer - worked perfectly the first time; I would not have been able to do it without the video. Thank you!
Wow! Well done but it is quite a job. I don't know if I can take the plunge. Too many trim bits to be removed. Worried about rattle after reassembly.
do you see the kids they have working at the dealer. it cant be any worse.. reading is fundamental.. patients and will to save about $300 . im going in.. what could possibly happen..lol
I was an installer for a while. Cars like Toyotas, Hondas, and this Mazda snap back together like butter, and don't rattle.
@@danielmikels I don't believe that for a second.Once it's taken apart, something has been loosened. It'll never be like a factory install ever again.
I'd say you're right to be concerned. Once it's taken apart, it'll never be the same as it was before.
No rattle. No seal was broken, so no loss in factory quality just because we disassembled it.@@tgs1766
Thank you. After watching your video, I was able to do the same for the sport trim of my 2019 Mazda CX-5. It was really easy to do. Like others mentioned, it is easier to route the cable starting from the audio head unit end. That way you do not have to pull the cable up using a fish tape. Initially, I had paired the two cable heads paird wrong and I had to tear the foam wrap. I corrected my mistake and wrapped the two cables using a wire harness tape I bought from Amazon. It has been two months since the installation and there is no rattling what so ever.
Thanks for the vid. After watching I guess the installation kind of worth the price dealership is charging....
...and thats why I insisted at purchase time that the dealer install it at cost when available.... foly huck that's a process and a half!
Whole Life Crisis LEGO for adults 😎
Why would anyone dislike this video, I don't know. It has been very helpful in successfully installing AA. Thank you for posting this.
Likely people that either just enjoy disliking things, or were expecting this to be a plug and play installation and blamed the complexity on the video.
It is very informative. But they probably disliked the way it was filmed. A lot of camera movement. Otherwise a good video
@@_al_7210 sound at times too
The Mazda dealership when they realize they can't charge you thousands for the same service
Thanks for the detailed guide man! You are a lofe saver!! Thanks a lot!!
Have 2016 CX-5 & Mazda 3. Thanks for the video. I am shocked at all that is required for a 2018 CX-5 given Mazda claimed to have partnered with Carplay several years ago. Clearly Mazda did zero preparation for what they are touting as (per mailing they sent me) “this innovative technology”. At this late date it is not innovative. You had to disassemble the center console, dash, glove box, and add new wiring. For a 2018, I would have thought a company listed several years as a CarPlay partner would have simply required a software upgrade. The fine print of the mailing my dealer sent me refers to it as a coupon but doesn’t give details of the value nor the cost of the install. I called and it turns out based on my vin it is compatible but not eligible for the coupon although when I first inquired the service department was not aware of the coupon. I will call back later to find out which of the 2 vins that was based on. I suspect the coupon is valid on 2018’s and maybe 2017’s. My cost would be $410 in southern Cali. Based on your video, I am guessing most of that is labor. I saw a video a couple of years ago of a Ford upgrade to Carplay and it basically involved replacing the usb module and updating software...that was it. The fact that you had to replace wiring tells me Mazda gave little thought to supporting Carplay until they realized that choice was affecting sales and their MazdaConnect was not innovative or even desirable.
It would have been so much easier for Mazda to have included AppleCarPlay years ago knowing that they would be enabling that in the future. They should have put usb 3.0 on it from the beginning and none of this would be required. Thanks for showing us all how to do this but I don’t think I’ll be able to do this on my Mazda 3. I love your blue paint job! That’s the color I wanted but the trim I wanted didn’t have it available.
You know what you're doing. But every move of your head cam became a roller coaster view. You were often looking at something low enough that the cam couldn't see it. I got part way through part 2 before I got too seasick to continue. This would have been a great video just by asking a second person to hold the camera for you.
Awesome job 🙏 I know it’s not step-by-step but you show us how intense it takes haha. This can definitely be done. I’d say the most time intensive is taking apart the panels from the center console to screen. Routing the cables doesn’t take more than 30 mins. Everyone’s results may vary but good on zip tying and use of the padded tape to avoid rattling. Looks like a fun project though definitely takes some free time 🙂. Informative video in case I buy a used ‘17 cx5 touring / grand touring
You're the man. Thanks for this video, made the install super easy and took me about 30 minutes to route everything. Thanks!
Great video! I think I can handle this. My only problem is I can’t seem to find the firmware update. I’ve seen a couple of links but they are no longer working. Any way you could guide me? Thanks!
Thanks for the video, it's the best out here to show how this is made. I studied it and was able to install the retrofit las weekend in my 2017 Mazda 3. The only difference was the side trims on the central console, my I touring doesn't have the leather ones and it's a whole piece but I just removed the gears cover to make sure I was routing the cables correctly.
I could not re-insert the CMU without pulling out the right side clips for the meter hood so I could get behind it. This was mentioned in the install guides. Not sure how you got yours back in without doing it. Kind of looks like you cut the video a bit at that section. Just wanted to comment in case any one else runs into the same issues because I spent a half hour trying to get that CMU back in T.T
I guess I was just able to bend it enough to get it past it. It's tough ABS plastic.
I got stuck at the same place here. Had to pull the meter clips to fit back in. Thanks for the tip👍
Excellent video! Got Android Auto running without a flaw. My 6 and 8 year old kids loved helping me take apart the car too! Thanks for that. Good job.
I’m installed new usbhub. And use carplay successfully. However, car gps signal was lost so original navigation working not well. Wrong location.
When I reinstalled original usb hub, gps was corrected. Anyone can help me?
My car is CX8 2018
Hey mate - This was absolutely spot-on and so helpful right to the T. Well presented, casual and assuring. Thanks - I was able to get on with this.
Welp I don't trust myself with this job. My hat off to you though for your presentation
Very informative video. Thank you very much. About to purchase a used 2018 CX5 Touring model for the wife. Just curious does yours have satellite radio?
i think I'll just take it to the dealer and pay the $450
Used this video too to make my cx5 CarPlay ready. But first updated my firmware to 70+
Awesome video! Clearly you are a Mazda tech. Knowing where your tabs and clips are critical as they do easily break. Thank u for the video
Remember kids dont forget to remove the bumber and grille. Itll make it easier😂😂 i tell you what thts why imma leave it and be happy
Well im not technical enough to do this... i guess I'll never be able to properly connect my phone to my car
@_@ I definitely can’t do it. Lolzzz
Not all heroes wear capes. This video was super helpful. Thank you !!!!
Thanks heaps!! The link for the installation instructions expired, do you still have the link for that plsss🙂
Great video but way to complicated for me.what do you think dealer charge for the entire set up for my 2017 Mazda 3?
That's so lame that Mazda didn't include Android auto with this car!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS INCREDIBLE INSTRUCTION VIDEO
It strikes me that how clumsy the Mazda manage this upgrade, you have to bleed 500 $ to have the dealer do it for you or take the risk and spent time to do it yourself with NO official support from Mazda.
I installed mine with help from you and other videos on youtube.
Finding firmware also take time and efforts.
The cable that came from Mazda genuine part was arranged in wrong way had to rip off the sponge coat and realign.
They even failed to design a common sense cable with all the confusion about the color of the connectors and wires!
Disappointed by Mazda big time
Thank you so much my dude! Just finished successor installing it in our 18 Mazda CX-5. Great video, made it easy and gave me confidence to do it myself. Saved $200 compared to what the dealership would have charged me for the job, and that makes a big difference being Christmas season.
Happy to help!
Does anybody know if the navigation directions still work in the heads up display using the Apple CarPlay apps? I asked the dealer and they said it does however I’ve read that it does not and I don’t trust the dealer. However I might do this in stall just for the upgraded USB because as we all know the original USB ports can’t even charge her phone with their absurd half an amp power supply. What a joke…
Thank you so much for sharing this. I was able to perform the install easily by following this video! I will echo what others have stated though and say that feeding the cables from the dash end down was probably simpler as it required no fishing of a wire and all that.
Is there an updated link to the installation instructions? Getting an error when going to the link.
Does anyone's touch screen not work with AA, but does when disconnected?
This video worked amazingly well. Thank you for posting. No issues.
I got a 2018 cx5 and wanted to get apple carplay but god damn! All that just to get Apple carplay/android auto? I thought it was simple as installing a software... Anyway great video.
It should be a simple software update. And if it was I'd do it . Hell, if it was just swapping out the USB ports I'd consider it but this is ridiculous. I'm glad this guy made the video though. I'll consider it a public service announcement detailing why I don't need Apple carplay/android auto. There's no way I'm having the entire interior of what's esseitially a brand new car disassembled and reassembled just for that. I don't care what anyone says, once you take something like this apart, it never goes back together the same way again. No matter how competent you are (or think you are). It'll never be like it was when it left the factory. In addition to Apple carplay/android auto, look forward to a drive filled with creaks and rattles.
@@tgs1766 exactly!
Absolutely no point ruining the interior just for that apple android bs
and I called the dealership for cost of install..2 hours at $108.00 per hour for labor...so you end up paying about $450.00 bones to get up to date. Not super happy about this...but still love my CX-5.
Thank you very much, this video was tremendously helpful. I got everything apart and back together without breaking a single tab or clip. CarPlay and Android Auto are working perfectly, plus I also installed the OEM remote start system while I had everything apart.
Where did you get the remote start and how much?
Where did you get the oem remote start?

I got it from eBay for $402. It's not the best system (the engine cuts off when you open the doors, and it doesn't have control over the climate) but it's decent.
This is pretty complicated for just Apple car play
Test it first before putting all the trim back
I watched you put it all back together thinking...man this guy has a lot of confidence in this working the first time! Always better to test before you put all the trim pieces back together :-)
Lol this was like the 3rd time I had taken my dash apart and can do it in probably 5 minutes or less so I wasn't too concerned
Just for Apple car play, shit no thank you
Thank you so much for making the video, seemed daunting at first but it turned out to be a fun little project.
Thanks for the video it really helped me in doing the change. The system works perfectly
Thanks for the video - great resource and got the install done!
Did you leave your battery connected? In the instructions it mentions unhooking it, but I wasn't sure if there is a reason you left yours hooked up.
I did. I didn't feel like disconnecting it. You're not dealing with any bare wires or risking any ground faults so it's up to you. If in doubt, just disconnect it.
Thank you... so many people have already said this... but this surely made me confident enough to get this done.
Happy to help :)
Thanks for this video! Great detail! I was able to update firmware using the link you provided and install wiring and unit in an afternoon! Carplay is working great! Thanks again!
Great step-by-step video!
What magnetic holder are you using? Looks like a great mount, and good positioning

So easy you don't even need shoes!
Corbin... You did a GREAT job! How long did this take? Wondering if I want to tackle this or have a dealer install. Any idea what a dealer would charge? CX-5 Touring ROCKS!!!! Just ordered the phone mount. THANKS
I'd say about 2 hours in total. People are saying $400 installed at the dealer.
My local dealer said $399 installed. I'll be tackling this job soon. Thanks for the awesome video, you're the reason I know it's not that tough.
How do you run the firmware update? Edit got it here: ua-cam.com/video/dKS3WpcxIYo/v-deo.html
Edit I made a video: ua-cam.com/video/qO3Lzln1Fc4/v-deo.html
Edit 1: Thanks man I got my AA/CP parts from Kanata Mazda in Ottawa, ON, Canada. I just updated the firmware thanks to your help and it seems to be functioning well, I will try to install the CarPlay module now!
Edit 2: I got CarPlay up and running, but took a while since I had to buy a few tools, forgot to get a plastic pry tool, extra insulating foam tape for the wires, and a torque tool to remove the bolts as they were tightly on. I also messed up the wiring because I put the wrong head of the wires with each other, be sure to check you have the blue green head together for the top, and the brown and black (I think) at the bottom before you start taping the foam. This was a big mistake on my part. But I learned a bit and if my dumb 22 year old college ass can do it anyone can. Thanks again!
Just used this video and it was ideal! no difference between this and my right hand drive UK car either. The only bit I didn't really pay enough attention to, was to foam wrap both cables together. I did one, and then realised my mistake.
Kit purchased from amazon for ~£80
Thank you for the excellent and very thorough information! Have a great day!
Hello wich software version you had into yourte 2018 model plse, on mine from 2018 too, i have 70.00.100 not necessary to upgrade normaly...
Thanks for all the great info! Have a few questions: (1) Is this EXACTLY the same hardware kit that the dealer would be putting in if I went there instead? (2) Is the firmware/software update EXACTLY what the dealer would also be using? The reason I ask is because one of the comments was asking you how much of a nuisance NOT having touchscreen anymore was. (3) Does this (your) update lose the touchscreen capability??
(4) And is that different from the dealer performed update? I have seen other videos of the update and the touchscreen was working....thanks
1. Identical
2. Identical
3. You don't lose or gain any touchscreen capability that wasn't already there without the update.
4. No difference. Those people installed non factory upgrades that allow touchscreen while in motion.
Thanks! So then I take it that the “no touch screen nuisance” comment was only talking about not having touchscreen while moving - just as it was before the update. Thanks for clarifying that - it’s just that the way his comment was worded (“the only reason I hesitate to do this”) kind of made it seem like this particular update caused some loss of touch screen functionality. I’m ready to dive in now and get started - great job on the video! Last few questions - do you have a video of how to do the firmware part?? Or instructions.? And where is a GOOD SAFE site to get the software?
No I do not have a video. There are easy to follow instructions and files located at the Mazda 3 forums link in the notes section.
Thank you for the instructions, i was able to do this in my car saving labour charges
Hello all, I just bought a used 2018 CX5 GT, AA was already installed by previous owner. I notice something weird when playing audio when I connect to AA through USB cable. There is literally no Bass even at highest setting of 6 when I play audio through AA, however when I play the songs via Bluetooth by disconnecting the AA there is bass. Did anyone else notice similar issue?
How much does the infotainment screen cost that have both apple car play and android???? ANYONE?
Next, please instruction how to install APK file for wireless carplay CX5
I just bought a 2018 and it came with this option, the guy that sold me the car was like I got this installed and I thought no big deal… 😂 I was wrong!!!!!!!!
I watched this and realized why the dealership wanted to charge me $550 to install Android Auto/Apple Carplay!
Thank you for this most helpful video! It would have taken me two or three times longer to figure out how to remove all that trim if not for your video. Will done!
Nice video , I got my 2017 Mazda CX5 GT brand new and now just gonna install the android auto and apple car play thing to it lol
Hi,
Thanks for the video, very useful! Can I ask if is common that Mazda build in maps aren't working once the new unit is installed? And that it loses the car GPS location? Do I need to connect the original cable as well along with the 2 new ones?
Is there anyway make it wireless Android auto in 2021 Mazda CX5 GS. Thanks
Can I just pay you to do it for me?
Might as well just take it to the dealer at that point lol
thanks for the detailed walk through. It was very helpful for my install.
I presume this same as 2018 mazda 3 hatchback, can this effect my warranty paid for 5 year unlimited extended plan.
Im having a helluva time disconnecting the aux box .. specifically the connector to the SD drive...any suggestions?
I wish there was a way to switch between audio modes without having to exit CarPlay and going back to in just to get my radio back
Hi,
does anyone know how to remove the tray at 2:35 to 2:38? I'm stuck and don't want to break anything. Thank you!
What???? If you want to enable Apple carplay you have to disassemble the car!!!!
Can someone please explain why do you need new wiring.
Hi! Great video. I got a problem with my installation. My system keeps turning off and on almost every 15 minutes or so. I did go back and check all cables and they are well connected and not bent, and nothing is out of place. Thanks for any tip or help with this.
Do you have the link to the document that you are viewing on the tablet?
Does the update need to be done before the hardware is installed? I just installed this today for my wife and we cannot get anything to update for it to recognize the USB.
Yes the software needs to be updated first
corbinl2890 thank you!
I’ll plug up the old parts this week and try again.
Anyone know if there is a way to just turn off the touch screen ability? My screen works great, but is ghosting now and I heard if you turn off the touchscreen this stops.
My 19 cx5 does not have the android auto icon under applications, does this mean that it did not come with it and I need to do what's in this video to get android auto?
Thank you for the video. I did an installation today without any problems. It took me 1,5 h
Wow this video is amazing, thank you so much for making it. Hoping to do it myself soon. Just wondering, what guide are you using on your ipad when you're doing the cable routing?
I was using the PDFs from Mazda that are posted on the mazda3revolution forum
@@TheIoniqGuy Thank you, yeah I looked on there but failed miserably. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but that thread is over 2400 posts and the search function isn't cooperating. Any tips on how to find it again?
EDIT: Nevermind I found it, for anyone else wondering follow the firmware link in the second post of the mazda3revolution thread
There's a link in the notes for my video
Fantastic video ….. Can u share the link of the installation manual you we’re referring to
Worked also in my cx5 2019, thank you !
This video was a huge help In getting this install done. If you’re on the fence about doing it, I have no car skills and made it happen with this video.
