Thanks, I agree. I use Pixelmator Pro & Apple Photo as well.
Thanks for watching Hubert, and it is a surprisingly powerful combination for sure!
That’s my go to app on my iPad. I do most of the edits from the iPhone on my iPad and I can do some quick cleanup of an image
Sounds like a quick and easy workflow!
In Mac Photos is there a way to tell if a photo has been edited with Pixelmator Pro? thanks
Not that I am aware of.
Fantastic Jim, thanx. I remember Pixelmator from back in the day…..kinda forgot about it. Always looking for alternatives to PS, although I may just keep LR, cuz, Library. Killer vid series on PP.
thanks much and yep it's a great product and solid alternative to PS for sure
Nice demo.
thanks much!
Hi, I am also working all the time with PMP, do you know if there is a shortcut to get straight to the PMP window to work with it? When doing plenty of photos and the time is short it is time stealing , always going to edtit, then the three dots, and then finally to PMP to get there. Any idea about that would be nice! Thanks!
At the beginning, which three dots did you click on?
This is exactly how I edit my photos. I just started Pixelmator Pro, had the original (standard) version but didn't use it much because of the floating interface. It was on sale for 50% off (might still be). I don't like instant fixes that a lot of programs offer, I go through each slider until I get the best results. A good photo requires a lot of attention.
thanks and yes I agree about giving a photo attention to get great results, thanks for watching
Just found you. Liked what I saw. Just subbed. I also liked the darker before pic. Somber, brooding, ominous. The edited version is great, absolutely, but it’s too “safe”, reassuring. The before pic is very unsettling. Thanks much.
haha thanks and I like them dark and moody at times too 😀

Looking forward to seeing your other uploads. I spent more years and even more money on taking pictures back when cameras used something called film, Kodak, usually. Most people today would say, “What’s a Kodak?” to which I would have nothing whatsoever to say. ☹️
@@bodegabreath4258 haha for sure
As an ON1 user, I'd love to see what options Pixelmator Pro has for local adjustments. One comment on your workflow: As soon as you made that last adjustment in "Photos", I'm pretty sure you lost the ability to re-edit in Pixelmator and have all your sliders appear where you left them.
You are correct. If you have any intention of returning to Pixelmator and resume where you left off, you cannot edit that image in Photos (or any other extension) any further. The work around would be to duplicate it first and work on that one instead. That will preserve the original for further editing in Pixelmator.
yep true and as David points out below, duplicate it first and then go back
@@daviddunk2966 Yeah. I not only do that, but I also keyword-tag it with the name of the app I used to edit it, so I know which one to go back to.
Worth to know that preserving the pixelmator changes creates a file in iCloud thats around 30mb in my case. Thats a lot of space…
Hmm good to know. I really don't use iCloud so I hadn't thought about that.
Great video, Jim - I use Photos all the time. My new M1 iMac arrives next week - can't wait to zip along with the new processor...
thanks much and I bet you are excited about the M1, sounds awesome!
Great presentation. I‘ve gone from Adobe to this ecosystem, with all of my pics. It does everything I need at a fraction of the cost.
thanks much and yep this is a great combo for sure and saves a lot of $ too!
I have been trying for years to use photoshop elements, started to use Pixelmator Pro, much smoother work flow for a iMac
Yes I agree, much easier than many apps and yet very powerful too. Have fun with it!
Got a few questions for you. Here I am on a hunt to find a replacement for Lightroom, as much as I love Lightroom, it has become too expensive. So now am researching Pixelmator, and from what you shown, it looks just like what I am looking for. I don't want anything to involved or complicated, I need something that works well with Photos, I try to stay true to what comes with the Apple OS as much as possible. But, I did see that on your menu it shows that also have photos connected to other apps just not pixelmator, what which one is your favorite? Pixlemator Pro is now $40, is that still good proposition? I know you are using Photos more because of the iCloud and your iPhone, but what photo viewer do you use for photos not on the iCloud, photos taken with an SLR, etc ?
great video
thank you!
The problem with apple photos on macos is that it doesn’t work very well with raw files. Here’s an example. Open a raw file with apple photos application and open it again with capture one or any other software if you want. Now try to edit the highlights of the raw.... ;)
btw when you edit with pixelmator pro from apple photos app you can't do basic functions like ML super resolution.
Yeah it's not perfect for sure. I mostly use Photos for my iPhone shots, whereas I prefer to edit and catalog my "real" photos elsewhere. And then I can use Pixelmator as an external editor from other apps.
I really am enjoying your videos "focusing" on Pixelmator Pro. They are very helpful. I hope that one day you do a video on using the Gradient Tool in Pixelmator. Thanks for your excellent videos.
thanks for watching Eric, glad you enjoy these, and I will do more as I get deeper into the app - admittedly there is a LOT you can do in Pixelmator Pro, and I have really only scratched the surface, but I will keep at it 😀
This is what finally made me let go of Aperture and upgrade to MacOS Monterey. I wanted the integration of having an app that organize my photos and to be able to edit them.
Yep, makes perfect sense and this combo is amazing for that!
Please, more and more Pixelmator Pro video) Thank you!
Thanks for watching. I don't have any current plans for Pixelmator videos but will look into it.
Enjoyed this video, Jim. Great image from Iceland! I didn't realize how seamless Pixelmator Pro works with photos on my MacBook Pro. And that repair tool works pretty well. I'll definitely be using this on my iPhone photos.
thanks for watching Geoff!
Do you teach Pixelmator one by one on Zoom? How much would you charge by hours?
Hi Crystal and I do some 1x1 teaching, yes. I have not done that for Pixelmator specifically, so I would want to understand what you need to make sure I can actually help. I am pretty good with the app but admittedly there is so much in it that I do not have skills across the entirety of it. Best bet is to email me at jimnix17 (at) gmail dot com and we can go from there. thanks!
Hey Jim, seeing as Luminar AI doesn't have layers, and Pixelmator Pro does, I was wondering if you would consider making a tutorial sometime on how to merge image layers. It's actually pretty easy in Luminar 4, but was curious how to do it in Pixelmator Pro. I don't see any real tutorials on UA-cam showing this. In your spare time, of course :-)
Hi Geoff and I did a couple of vids about Pixelmator and layers, like this one ua-cam.com/video/mAjzNSFHZMQ/v-deo.html but haven't really had the time to dive deep into the app, bc there is so much you can do with it, and I am mostly busy with Luminar and On1 stuff the majority of the time - so many apps, so little time 😀
@@JimNix Thanks! I do use Luminar mostly, so no worries.
the problem with this i think its not like lightroom whick you canb= bacth sync the grading
Right that is a difference for sure
Thanks for this video Jim. I haven't used Photos much at all but can now see how well it works with Pixelmator Pro. Seems like a good place to store photos as well.
thanks for watching Anne and for sure you can store in Photos, pop over to Pixelmator Pro for advanced edits, and return to Photos all quite easily. Thanks!
This was so helpful, thank you!! I didn't know they work together, I was importing my photos to Pixalmater, this is so mush easier. So glad I found the tutorial.
Glad it helped!
So many options on the App Store, but I don't like installing random apps just to try them, also everything now seems to be subscription based payment, I also don't have the time to be learning new interfaces all the time. So my question is, which would be the one photo editor that you would recommend that is true and proven and worth learning and getting used to, one that is not subscription based.
I use Luminar with Photos. Works a treat.
indeed that is also a great combo!
Pixelmator pro or Affinity 2? Or both? :)
haha both are great but admittedly I don't use either one that much - but Pixelmator Pro is so cheap that you may as well get it!
How does Pixelmator Pro compare to Affinity Photo for you?
Good question, and admittedly I am not qualified to make a good comparison of the two. I like Pixelmator and use it. It has a lot of power and many features. But Affinity? It feels like there is even more to that app, but my time spent with it is pretty minimal so I am not really sure, sorry.
@@JimNix thanks for the reply! Well if you ever get around to testing our affinity I’d be curious to see your opinions :)
@@sirzackefeller I would like to get better at Affinity but I just don't really have the time. I did a first impressions video after I bought it and played with it a little, but I just haven't found the time to get back to it and get comfortable with it.
Hi Jim just discovering your channel, great video, thanks. Just wondering what you think of the Photos app by itself, on its own, as it were.
Hi there and thanks, and I think Apple Photos is not bad, really. I like a lot of advanced features etc, which it doesn't really have, but I still find it is pretty solid for basic editing plus a little more.
@@JimNix Got it thanks!
Would Pixelmator Pro be an advanced one. Ideally looking for something that goes with my iPhone photos (beginner here) and also uses the Photos app. Thanks.
@@accentontheoff for sure Pixelmator Pro is advanced and pairs incredibly well with Photos. They work perfectly together.
@@JimNix Got it thanks!
I believe Apple incorporated their old Aperture program into Photos. Has a very familiar feel.
Yes they probably took at least some of that capability and put it in Photos.
Hi Jim, thanks for great demo of Photo and Pixelmator Pro. I have found that Pixelmator Pro have a great number of great tools.
thanks Peder and yep it's a great tool!
Thanks Jim...
thanks for watching!
These two applications are better integrated than Lightroom itself. Above all, they are very fast and responsive.
Yeah they really are, they just complement each other so well, and yes very fast and responsive!
