M2 MacBook Air - A DAY IN THE LIFE as a STUDENT ✨ 16GB RAM / 256GB ✨

  • Is the M2 MacBook Air GOOD for STUDENTS? 🤔 (16GB RAM, 256GB) Going back go school soon? The M2 MacBook Air could be a perfect laptop for students!
    I've rolled back the years and used the M2 MacBook Air as a student would. In this video I used some of the great recommendations I received from my previous reviews and live streams, as well as what I think would be relevant for students. This is the 16GB RAM, 256GB M2 MacBook Air in beautiful ✨Starlight✨. Is 16GB RAM the right upgrade to have or would 512GB be more a better upgrade? I think if your studying involves multitasking and compiling code, the 16GB would be perfect as I demonstrated here.

    You are the best tech UA-camr I discovered I 2022. Rocking on m2 air too. Absouletly benchmark for entire notebook industry! There is no need for a windows laptop as long as you can manage your windows needs on Parallels :) my only wish after switching to zfold4 (which I believe is the most game gamechanger mobile product of the 2022) is macOS version of 'Link to Windows' for android users. (not any 3rd party apps) after switching to fold 4 as a longtime iPhone user I really missed the integration of iPhone&MacOS.

      Totally agree with you by the way, the thing I missed the most when I'm not using an iPhone is airdrop. But with 5G speeds in the studio I'm actually ok just uploading to Google Photos and downloading from there on the Mac. Not as convenient but not as painful as using cables. Have a lovely rest of the week ❤️

      @Alex Gear & Tech i kindly suggest you experience parallels on this air drop matter. I just downloaded the trial version yesterday, and so far, it's so good. It is unbelievably easy to transfer files on each platform, and the rest is just sliding on mb Air's track pad. If you think u don't have enough space on your SSD, you can transfer Windows files to external ssd, too! Also, i believe that as a tech UA-camr, you will benefit from having both operating systems on one hand! Btw still waiting for your z fold 4 & s23 ultra comparison. I am so close to breaking the bank for s23, but I'm not so sure if i miss the functionality of fold 4 or not :( have a lovely week ahead, too! You are the man!

    This review is SO much more valuable than all the "let's break the computer" reviews people are making! I got the base model in midnight. I'm the pastor of a small church that is coming up on 10 years old. It's on par with a small business. Literally every document, keynote presentation, graphic, etc that we've used over the years is stored on the 256 GB drive (and Google Drive in the cloud) and the storage is only a little over halfway full. 256 GB is plenty of storage for a lot of people. This computer handles everything I do no problem, without getting warm at all. Pages, Keynote, email, web browsing, Photoshop, etc. Thanks for the great video!

      Thanks so much Chris!! My pleasure! I am glad you found it useful. I really have had enough of those videos myself lol. Dont get me wrong I will probably try to break it at some point for a bit of fun but I think right now quite a lot of people are still unsure which one to get so those videos don't really help. This a good, useful no hype/no frills guide. Interestingly, I have the same 16/256g configuration for my M1 Air. I’ve had it for a year and a half, and it’s still snappy. However, I like the look and form of the new M2 Air. Decisions, decisions 😂

      Great to hear!! Yes, that M2 looks so nice. Sometimes, performance comes second ;-) But I appreciate these things cost a lot of money so I'd say only upgrade it if you have cash to spare. In your situation, the M1 still delivers so really it's going to come down to what makes you happy 😉

    I got the 10c 16GB 512GB M2 Air last week for $1,376 from Apples Refurbished store and absolutely love it. Its my first PC in over 10 years and wow, it is so snappy and smooth. Webpages are instantly up when you click on them. I can run games like Civilization V smooth as butter. And I plan on taking classes next year to start working my degree and feel its a perfect fit. I had an 8GB model M1 that I returned because it would bog down slightly with lots of tabs opened and when I played basic games.HIGHLY recommend looking at the Refurbished Store. The devices are indistinguishable from brand new ones and you save some big money while also helping the environment.

    I bought the 8GB RAM / 512GB SSD 10 GPU M2 Air. I have found that configuration to be good as well. Looking at the activity monitor, it looks like the Mac uses some Swap when doing things like running Parallels / Windows 11, but the performance is excellent. Actually, it’s crazy fast. I wanted more disk space to handle the Windows volume plus photos and other items that can’t be offloaded to an external drive easily. The 16GB unit was a custom order and the 512GB one is a standard build and was in stock, so I’m giving it a try. I avoided the 256GB base unit due to the slower R/W speeds to SSD.

    I binge watched all of your videos!! Love the ease and simplicity that you explain all the tech aspects!
    I currently want to change my old Dell laptop for a new M2 Air, I’m a business major student so I rarely do any video or photo editing, and most of the time I just use Google Drive and Microsoft Word and Excel. Also, I occasionally do gaming. I checked from other creators that upgrading to 16gb ram and 512gb ssd was the right decision, but keeping in mind I do not need a super computer, I’m confused on what to upgrade so that my laptop lasts years and it is future-proofed. What do you recommend me?

    • @AlexGTech
      @AlexGTech  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you so much! This literally made my day 😊
      For that usage honestly, the 8GB/256GB will be more than fine.
      Even if you do decide to do some creative work in future and some minor multitasking (not 50 tabs in chrome and video editing 😂)
      The only thing you will eventually need is more storage, once you start saving photos/music/etc. but for that there’s always the option to use external SSDs. I have reviewed a few on the channel and my current favourite is the Acasis hub. But I don’t think you will need it for a while.
      Hope this helps, have a great week ahead!

    As always a well balanced video Alex. Great job. My daughter is going to college and needs a laptop so this video is timed perfectly. I'm still thinking which one to give. As a Windows and Android guy I still think the Apple laptops are heavy priced. The base model M2 costs €1519,00 and that is big price tag. De Air M1 is also still a good option but there are some nice Windows alternatives for this kind of money. Choices, choices ...

    Does upgrading the SSD make the computer work better when multitasking? I'm firm on upgrading to 16 RAM but not sure about the SSD.

    • @AlexGTech
      @AlexGTech  2 роки тому +2

      Multitasking relies more on memory. More apps open = more RAM. SSD will only help (because of memory swap which then uses the SSD) in situations where the apps you are using completely exhaust the memory (with 16GB that will take some doing!)
      That was basically my rationale for choosing the 256GB. 16GB RAM means my apps will be running happily not needing to touch the internal SSD. And if I ever run out of storage or come close to it, I can use a fast external SSD like the one I reviewed on the channel from Acasis. Hope this helps, but let me know if anything is unclear. Have a great weekend!

      Thanks so much Ernes! I'd say so. Anything that touches Adobe software would immediately qualify for a RAM upgrade in my books 😉 Not saying the base model can't cope, but if you are looking to multitask (a few tabs in Chrome as well as Ai open) then the 16GB will give you more breathing space. With SSD space, you can always use something like a fast external SSD. The one I currently use is also a hub for external ports, definitely worth a consideration: ua-cam.com/video/W5MMUXPri8g/v-deo.html

All the American tech guy channels have really annoying voices that sound like they're from revenge of the nerds or something. Definitely 16GB RAM. I would even say 256GB if you are prepared to work off of an external (fast) SSD drive. But the 512GB will definitely give you piece of mind. In terms of multitasking, the 8GB just won't allow you to do that without maxing out the RAM and using swap, which in turn will make the Air get quite warm. If you are not multitasking with creative apps, the 8GB is fine too. Multitasking with productivity apps is totally fine. It's the creative apps or apps that you might use while compiling code that won't be able to run well if you have lots of tabs open and other apps.

In fact, look at the Zenfone 9 release today, $200 more than last year, reflecting TSMC $100 chip rise that Apple also had with the M2. Wait for the M2 MB Pro 14 Pro and that will certainly be at least $200 more than it was in 2021 as they have stacked M2 chips. Also, the M1 MB Pro 14 Pro is in its last six months and is being discounted -v- a newly design Air, so not comparable from any logical angle viz pricing.

I'd also like to edit some easy video as hobby. I'm so undecided about upgrade the RAM or the SSD and only one of them because the price (both of them would cost as a 14" pro and it becomes a little expensive and maybe overpowered for my tasks). According to what I understood by your video is that is better 16 GB of RAM, right?

      Firstly thanks for the kind words. 100% the RAM! With the SSD, you do have decent workarounds available. With memory, there isn't a way to work around it, so yes definitely 16GB for that usage. What I was doing was probably near the extreme of someone who is very busy and doesn't want to close some tabs or other apps so the 16GB was definitely nice to have as all the other apps didn't suffer and the Mac remained cool. In future, when the space starts to become a problem, I'd strongly recommend something like a fast SSD enclosure I reviewed a couple from Acasis here: ua-cam.com/video/W5MMUXPri8g/v-deo.html Hope this helps 🙏🏼

For basic usage even the base model might last that long, but if you plan to do anything a little more involved like multitasking and creative work, then the 16GB for me is a good upgrade. The SSD can probably be 256GB to be honest. In a long stint like 5 years, 256 or 512 won't make much difference. In both cases you might run out of space quite quickly. As a researcher, if I usually open 20-30 tabs (may include media like youtube or netflix), while using several word files, and large pdfs (book length sometimes with pics) , with spotify, will 8gb ram be enough or do I need to go with 16G? Thanks!

      @AlexGTech  Рік тому

      Hi Sophie, for that usage it will be absolutely fine. You will be using about 4-5GB of the RAM (rule of thumb for 30 tabs) so as long as you’re not trying to compile code, edit RAW photos or videos at the same time, you will be ok with 8GB based on my tests.
      If you do envisage dabbling with high quality video editing or large amounts of photos in Lightroom in the future then the 16GB would be better as those creative apps do consume a lot of RAM. You can see this in more detail on this other video I did here. Hope this helps 🙏🏼

    Hi! I intend to buy my first Apple laptop in the near future.
    I use an iPhone, Airpods Pro, Homepod, Apple Music, iCloud … and I am very satisfied with this ecosystem.
    I want to use this laptop for at least 6-7 years and I want to configure it as correctly as possible... with the most advantageous quality-price ratio.
    I will use it for mail, document editing, web browsing, netflix and a little Photo/Video editing.
    In the country where I live, the prices are higher, and the options are as follows:
    - MacBook Air M1, 8Gb/256/ 1000$
    - MacBook Air M1 16Gb/2T/B $1570
    - MacBook Air M2 8Gb/256/ $1320
    - MacBook Air M2 8Gb/512/ $1730
    - MacBook Pro 14inch M1Pro 16Gb/512/ $1980
    I would appreciate it if you could tell me your opinion.

      @kab9729 2 роки тому +1

      @@AlexGTech thanks, I chose midnight regardless of hearing about it being fingerprint magnet and easy to scratch the side of the port. I feel like the color is too unique to pass on but I’ll probably use a clear case to protect it. I chose higher SSD rather than RAM because I first ordered the base model and saw that I barely use up the RAM and I feel that for most students 8 GB RAM is enough but if you do need a little bit more RAM once in a while the SSD can use swap but the RAM cannot he used as SSD. Though you can buy external hard drives I feel like it’ll just be a hassle to use as a student when you run out of internal storage and you have to download apps or softwares. Apps, softwares and even files are getting bigger and bigger everyday so I feel like if I want to keep the laptop for a while I’d need more internal storage but RAM could also be argued for that also but I’m my opinion I don’t think as a student I’d need that much RAM especially if I’m not having 30 tabs open while doing a 4k video editing.

      I see, yes that makes sense. Always good to try first, am glad you found a good config for your work. I agree, the larger SSD will give you more piece of mind in the long run. I am using an external SSD myself but it is something extra to carry and remember to backup, etc...

      yes, I myself didn't think much of it recently. I had the original back in 2010 and loved it. It's definitely for a certain market though, when you need to do some more advanced Pro workflows, it has its limitations. But operating within those limits is a delight!

    • @AlexGTech
      @AlexGTech  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Claire, honestly for that usage the 8GB will be plenty. The only reason to go up to 16GB is if you ever plan to do “A LOT” of multitasking and not only that, throw in a couple of heavy graphic apps into the mix. If you’re not planning on doing that, the base model will last a long time. Just like the base model M1 Air is still going strong now…

      You may want to check the courses you will be taking. Most likely you need to take an application course (office) and ms access works only on windows. You can install parallels or vmware to allow 2 operating system but as a student it can be a hassle.

    • @AlexGTech
      @AlexGTech  2 роки тому

      Hi there. This configuration here worked beautifully for coding tasks and multitasking with office type applications and several tabs open in Chrome. The only thing you might need in future is an external SSD drive. But you won't need it for a while. As it was pointed out below, Parallels may be needed if you want to run some Windows only apps. I have just tested Parallels and running a Windows 11 virtual machine. Absolutely no problems with that. Of course, I am only doing relevant lightweight stuff, not trying to edit a multi-layered 4K video at the same time. This machine is pricey but I think the 16GB RAM is the only upgraded needed for the use case you described.
