just copying and pasting my reply on AVS forum about these 2 projectors: Recently tested out the Optoma 1080 and BenQ 1085. I'm returning the Optoma. The BenQ just looked better overall colorwise, brightness and contrast. The Optoma seemed to get colors "right" when in Reference mode but wasn't a bright picture. Once you start messing with brightness/contrast and other basic color options, colors started getting weird looking. Almost like pink skin, blown out whites and just didn't look right. The Benq looked good right out of the box. Colors looks good even when messing with brightness and contrast. Noticed a difference when on the homescreen of the PS4. Optoma felt a little washed out compared to the more colorful reproduction of the BenQ. Also, as of now I have the projectors either on the floor or table and I need to use keystone adjustment for both the Optoma and Benq. I noticed that the edges of the picture had a slight jaggedness to them on the Optomo while the Benq's edges were sharp. Due to only vertical keystone adjustment on the Optoma you're limited to placement as opposed to the Benq that I can have off to the side a little more. The only thing is I have to mount the projector in front of my ceiling fan in my living room and the Optoma I think would produce a larger image than the BenQ at the same distance. Playing Battlefield 4 on both projectors, i didn't notice any difference with lag. I'd spend the extra $200 for the BenQ1085 just for the better color reproduction/quality and keystone adjustments.
Chris, I really appreciate you review. I am looking at these two projectors for a new training room I am having built. This room is going to be 30' long and 20' wide. It will have no windows, and will have 5 separate light banks on dimmers. Short throw is important to me, as the trainer will have to be interacting with the screen, while not blocking it. Based on your review, I think I can afford the extra distance needed for the BenQ, and am going that route. Also thanks to Super Man for the screen paint idea, as I will be purchasing that as well. FYI, I am also building a conference room to the same specs, and recently visited Epson to look at the Brightlink Pro 1430WI, and it is sweet. If anyone needs a collaborative smart projector solution, this is the way to go. I bought one, and love it. I don't need the interactivity for the training room, so I upped the resolution and contrast. Thanks again Chris, this review really confirmed my two choices, and narrowed it to one for me..
Hey Chris, thanks for the review! This was great and after seeing this I am definitely getting the BenQ. I can't believe the picture quality. Also, thanks for posting the screen and bracket specifications. I'm pretty much going to order your setup.
Great comparison , got the GT1080 plus a 120” motorized screen for $300 on Facebook marketplace only got 30 hrs on it. This was my first projector and I am loving it. It is washed out with ambient light, but great for movies in a dark environment. I’ll keep this for now until a 4K short throw is available.
In the UK the BenQ is £725 whilst the Optima is £589.99 (prices from Amazon, they can change). BenQ costs originally £959, whilst the Optima is originally £650. So if a simple "tweak" can be done to the Optima, get that. But for the same "tweaking" to be done to the BenQ, it's a tough decision. If i was to have a projector, i'd paint the wall black that way there is not light bouncing off back onto my screen as light noise. SO you guys should also take into account his room did light up from the projectors. This is a very good review, just pointing these things out to further help (or confuse) you.
Loving the Optoma GT1080. 103" screen from about 4 feet away. Perfect for gaming and watching sports. Short throw was a must for me and after trying multiple short throws out, the GT1080 is the best one so far that I have tried.
I went ahead and got the GT1080. I can take it and use it to project NFL games and movies anywhere. The long throw projectors suck as you have to go 8-10 feet back and that dampens the fun factor. The vertical shift sucks on the 1080 though but after angling it, theres no problem. I use the cinema mode, the others are too bright
Great review thank you. I have been looking at each of these as my possible choice for my home theater room. I Have bounced back and forth on which one to buy. After seeing the review though I am sold on the Ben Q
great review... i just got a benq w1070 on an impulse to get ready for outdoor movies and was impressed. Do you know if the ht1085st is worth the upgrade?
+Majestechs after watching some of your other videos it looks like you've come a long ways since this video was taken. I see you are now into 4k. Congratulations! Anyway, I am a rookie like you were in the above video and have never had a projector. I am looking to get one but what do you recomend for a good 1080p projector in 2017? Most of my material is 1080p bluray. I have no 4k content and my internet is way to slow to be streaming HDR4k and even struggles with regular HD content. Any suggestions?
Nice review; greatly appreciated. Was looking at the Optoma HD142X versus the Optoma GT 1080. The short throw functionality of the GT 1080 won me over. Are you doing anymore videos for home theater?
Am I the only one who thought the audio at the beginning was in perfect lip-sync with the dog? Go back and watch from 0:02 through 0:07. It's really quite impressive.
Thanks Chris for the review, that was informative. Considering buying the same as well. Would you mind tell us which firmware revision that came original with the BenQ? And have you had it updated yet? If so, any improvement noticed? Thanks, John
I have a Benq regular lens with a 120" screen about 13' distance. I can only fill about 80% of the screen width. Would a short throw zoom in enough to work with my setup?
Hi Chris, Thanks for the review : ) Any update on how happy you are now ? I'm looking for a projector, particularly for gaming and I was thinking of getting the Optoma… Thanks again, any knowledge would be appreciated ! Cheers. J.
What is the best 4k short throw projector out there under 3K? I'm interested in the optima in this video because it works under 11 feet but would prefer a 4k model since all my stuff is 4k. Been shopping for over a year my main issue is the throw distance I need it to work under 11 feet ceiling mounted.
Thank you for the review, I've been looking at these two and the picture on the Ben q looks great. I think i know now which I'll get. And link for the mount?
Paul Sweeney I did a ton of research on input lag on both of these projectors and even though the GT1080 has the edge on speed, I'd say less than 1% of people that use either of them would notice a difference. They are both beyond acceptable for gaming. I've played Destiny (xbox one) on both of them and noticed no real difference from my 70" LED tv.
This is my first home projector, so I cannot directly compare it to it's competitors, but I did read all the reviews I could find before purchasing this one and became versed on the good and the bad of home projectors. so nice get it here amzn.to/16Wo0vm
Chris Hughes Hello Hughes, I got the projector but in only 5 minutes on get so hot and smell burning! could be something wrong with my projector or normally feel hot, I can not imagen when we watch movies or play games for 2 horas or more. Please, Do you have any comments about it. Thank you.
+Paul Sweeney Bought mine on Amazon has the best price at the moment www.amazon.com/BenQ-zeHT1085ST-1080P-Theater-Projector/dp/B00LTMPOUE/?tag=ref10-20
thanks for sharing .. one question please..... difference in contrast? did you notice any advantages between both projectors in terms of contrast? thanks
stryker7x These are my first projectors but I'd say the contrast on both of them is: HT1085ST: 7 out of 10 GT1080: 6 out of 10 Both projectors are bright enough that you can use a lower lamp setting in order to get better contrast and still maintain a great picture. The only problem is that will require controlled lighting like a dedicated theater room.
***** Thanks for the suggestion. I just wish the Black Diamond screen was cheaper. It looks like the 119" version costs over $3000. That's way out of my budget. Maybe I can splurge on it in the future :)
hi, i just purchase this projector. can i setup screen size optima gt1080 in any screen size as i want. i mean can i modified the Width size and the Height in any screen ?
Thanx for sharing this sir. Was torn between this 2 model, but now after watching this i de ided to go for the Optoma GT1080 due to the projection throw. Would you care enough to explain on the 3D capability. Does it need additional device or is it 3D ready that i only just need the 3D content and 3D glasses?
Superheroes Merchandise Store Not with this model mate, it's all built in. I have the much older GTX750 (720p) which is nearly 4 years old now, and the 3D is built in too. I'm torn between these models of projectors.
+bigbudha168 It's a real toss up. I preferred the look of the BenQ over the optoma but the ridiculously short throw of the optoma makes it a great choice for most people. They are both good projectors.
can you recommend good 500-1000 usd projector that can hold ambient light like backyard after none? 1-3 good option i got to buy it fast in shipping time may take me a month from the usa
We do need an Review Update on the Optoma1080 since it might be the best Budget Projector. Edit: My boy went from "I am new to projector" to "I am the projector King" in 6 years.
Great video, if you want to upgrade the screen for ambient light Digital4k crystal screen paint for a black diamond screen, or digital1crystal screen paint to improve the screen gain.
1aquariustechguy i could not trust this 100% becuase i noticed your white balance kept changing, it's hard to see, most people have a 1000:1 monitor, i have a plasma with 4500:1 contrast static and this looked good, but how does it look like in terms of dynamic contrsast? I want static btw. if it pulls 20k:1 static then it's a buy :) And since you made this video, what are your thoughts after having a little time with the projectors.
Johannes Andersson I had the 1080, it doesn't have "lens shift". The feature you're talking about only moves the image within the frame. It doesn't move the whole framed image to make setting up easier.
BenQ MW632ST 3,200 ANSI Lumen Colorific MHL DLP Projector best price ever plus free shipping was enough for me to avail this projector! twitter.com/VoveIM/status/891956104061534209
Trey lo, the HD26 is sweet for fps Gaming like BO3 and I'd you want to double the price on what you spend the hd37 with its multi coated "GLASS" lens is amazing clear compared to the 2040 the 2040 is still not as clear as its more comparable competition the hd26.
I don't care about setup or distance or ms lag or sound cus they're both good, which would you think is best for ps4 gaming especially FPS/zombie/horror dark gaming in picture quality if tweaked to it's best??
+killax1000 I'd already see that list, the first thing i look at before learning about projector weeks ago, been researching alot lately. I'm just looking for $1k below projector good enough with high picture quality and great for gaming. Most LCoS I found under $1k doesn't have a strong color brightness when display so the screen looks a bit pale. I went on debate over Optoma vs. BenQ. The reason is because Optoma is known for their high contrasts for black levels while the BenQ lacks that. But on the other hand the BenQ is known for it's high color brightness, in which the Optoma has a low color brightness (showing pale colors). I made up my mind since last night for the BenQ series because I rather prefer seeing the whole screen full of sharp colors over the high level of black projector. Both projector has it's pros and cons (High Contrast over High Color Brightness), I'm gon stick with BenQ's for now until I save enough for over $1k+ projectors for more balance Contrast+Colors.
Trey Lo Anything beyond $700 isn't going to have better colors, at that point you're just buying features. Wi-Fi enabled, Short throw, 3D, 4K, and so forth.
Good projector this Optoma gt1080 i finally bought one for a 2 month back then, and much better than my old optoma gt750 gamer. bigger screen from lower distance from wall.. about 1.8 meter from wall i got 135 inch. no problem here and good quality.. Optoma does it again. when optoma does 4k projector ?only bother me Optoma GT 1080 is that the power cables and HDMI connectors could have been sitting behind the projector instead of the page it's annoying when you have the projector on a table
+Justin D yes, it depends on environment and ur walls. If ur rooms all white then the white wall would just reflects alot of the screen and bounce back which will wash ur screen to look light-color or washed out. Best way to do is get a black-screen (found some 60-100 bucks on ebay that I bought) are very good for room that is white because it absorbs the picture and doesnt randomly bounce to other walls causing ur screen to wash out
would have been too tall, he's projecting 150 now it would be 300 at where the benq is, you dont want to project too low or you'll miss some of your image, also you have to sit quite a ways back to enjoy a 300inch screen
Just realized that this video is the one you mentioned on your other video, cool that I found it. If you don't mind answering,I'm stuck between the optoma 1080 darbee and the BenQ ht3050.advice from anyone would help bc I'm new to projector as well and eneded up buying a view Sonic pa503w only to realize this thing was not made for movies,it works but it's far from what I expected..thanks
Vivid looks like crap on anything. Anything cranked to its max is gonna look bad. For a small space like mine the Optoma is hard to beat. If I've gotta go 9 feet back I may as well go whole hog and get a Powerlite.
Thanks - setting up a gaming/media room and this will be my first projector purchase.

From the scene at the end @ 8:56 it appears the Optoma has more shades of black. Look above the short lady, you can notice the details.

Thanks for the side by side comparison. I checked the throw data for the ben q, and it supposedly will project 100 inches at 1.5 meters too.

The Optoma GT1080 Projector performs better on a silver gray screen better than the Carl's flexy white black out cloth or plain white screen.

So would you prefer a projector over a 70 inch tv?
Optoma GT1080e thats the one i think is the best also at gaming optoma is for sure the best
I was wondering if u noticed the optima getting really dim on dark scenes and how i fix it pls help
With a short-throw projector you get a larger image from a shorter distance.. and can you swim in and out
I've heard about the bulbs failing early. Do you have any thoughts on this?
The average bulb lasts 4000-6000 hours. And you can get replacement bulbs for less than $100
How is the 3D compare on each of those models?
thanks for sharing .. one question please..... difference in contrast? did you notice any advantages between both projectors in terms of contrast? thanks

Tony. UK
Yes it's possible. It will be VERY bright though so you'll probably need to turn eco mode on.
thanks for your reply
Tony
Great video, if you want to upgrade the screen for ambient light Digital4k crystal screen paint for a black diamond screen, or digital1crystal screen paint to improve the screen gain.
Thank you for the review! Could you please tell me what's the music at the end of the video?
Old Video but curious to know which one you went for? I'm torn between a few choices now
+thefridge1000 I went with the BenQ
They both looked excellent. Personal preference will play a part. I personally need a short throw. Ben Q short throw in that price range?
I preferred the BenQ out of the box but they are both great. It really comes down to how much throw distance you have and the size screen you want.

For the best blacks I recommend a gray screen and lower lamp power. On either projector.
thanks`
+Trey Lo You want an LCoS projector if you want the darkest blacks. www.cnet.com/news/dlp-vs-lcd-vs-lcos-projector-tech-pros-and-cons/
Optoma is the Best ??????
Optoma looks way better, Ben q looks like a cheap Kmart set.
Good projector this Optoma gt1080 i finally bought one for a 2 month back then, and much better than my old optoma gt750 gamer. bigger screen from lower distance from wall.. about 1.8 meter from wall i got 135 inch. no problem here and good quality.. Optoma does it again. when optoma does 4k projector ?only bother me Optoma GT 1080 is that the power cables and HDMI connectors could have been sitting behind the projector instead of the page it's annoying when you have the projector on a table
what kind of screen do you have?
Paul Mikota this was a homemade screen with Carl's Flexiwhite screen material.
is it ok to just project it onto a white wall???
+Justin D yes, it depends on environment and ur walls. If ur rooms all white then the white wall would just reflects alot of the screen and bounce back which will wash ur screen to look light-color or washed out. Best way to do is get a black-screen (found some 60-100 bucks on ebay that I bought) are very good for room that is white because it absorbs the picture and doesnt randomly bounce to other walls causing ur screen to wash out
Sound?
I would of just threw the optoma where ur benq is and had the whole wall lit up after painting the wall bright white
would have been too tall, he's projecting 150 now it would be 300 at where the benq is, you dont want to project too low or you'll miss some of your image, also you have to sit quite a ways back to enjoy a 300inch screen
also a white wall vs a screen is like night and day, screens are made to reflect the light back into your eyes, paint obsorbs light
Dallon Lahoda not unless you paint your wall with the right paints.
Can you do a update video
So the color is better on the benQ???
The color is definitely better out of the box.
Love my gt1080darbee only thing im having problem with lining like up with my projector screen
Could you just put the optoma where the benq is if you wanted to?
he could but the screen would be about 300 inches
Yes. Like Dallon said, it would make a HUGE screen but it would also be very dim.
how far is your ben q from the screen
about 9.5 feet
Thanks
Just realized that this video is the one you mentioned on your other video, cool that I found it.
If you don't mind answering,I'm stuck between the optoma 1080 darbee and the BenQ ht3050.advice from anyone would help bc I'm new to projector as well and eneded up buying a view Sonic pa503w only to realize this thing was not made for movies,it works but it's far from what I expected..thanks
vs hc1200?
Vivid looks like crap on anything. Anything cranked to its max is gonna look bad. For a small space like mine the Optoma is hard to beat. If I've gotta go 9 feet back I may as well go whole hog and get a Powerlite.
