Single pilot IFR operations means thinking ahead and briefing your approach. Even configuring your aircraft for landing early is beneficial in order to allow you to concentrate on the approach. In this weeks video follow along as I fly N245TA from OCF to GNV with a RNAV approach.

I’ll add another comment. Your one of the few who show the iPad and window view the majority of the flight. Very helpful for understanding plus your following verbal commentary through the flight.
After watching countless videos, I have finally been able to fully follow along the pre flight with ATC in real time. For ages, it’s been Greek to me and always too fast. As an armchair pilot without any real world experience, this is a big step for me.

I like your approach to IFR flying (no pun intended). You were always ahead of the aircraft and at some points you had a few minutes to just enjoy the flight and talk to "us".
Great job. As an old pilot and retired air traffic controller, it was nice to see the new equipment in action with an actual flight.

Jason I've been wanting to mention for a little while that you are inspiring me in two ways . I am in my 50's always loved aviation and because of your great videos I'm getting a plan together to hopefully Earn my PPL including looking to enroll in your ground school program. The second is how your transformation physically has been from like 2 years ago you certainly have been hitting the Gym which has inspired me to pay attention and get healthy including hitting the Gym and change my eating habits . Stay safe and continue the good work on flight.

For what it's worth downwind, base and final are all standard terms used for vectoring IFR traffic in an ATC facility, although they are not commonly on the radio (I do have it though). Sit in any radar room of a class C or B approach control and you'll hear those terms all day. Unlike VFR by the time traffic is handed off to local control the aircraft will be on final so those pattern terms aren't used in the tower in this IFR approach context. Thanks for the informative content as always.

Thank You. I really enjoyed watching that. As a student pilot it is really intimidating to try to visualize someday dealing with single pilot IFR. I probably shouldn't watch these video's yet as I cannot fathom being able to keep track of it all proficiently at this point. But, I really like the learning environment your videos provide and all the breakdown of all the procedures. It does help.

Shortly after you broke through the clouds on the approach to land, I noticed that you were flying over dense green forest. If possible, it would be great in a future video if you could describe your engine failure options at various stages of the approach to land.

Great! I just watched the whole video, and I flew this morning in IMC shot the RNAV approaches.
Tower gave take off clearance with call sign 245AT not 245TA. I'm surprised they didn't announce similar call sign warning with the other AT on frequency.
I filmed an autopilot approach recently as well as a hand flown approach to minimums. Nice video.

Regarding thinking outside the box.
I’ve made it my habit that when im at an uncontrolled field, I’ll call a fix and append a distance, in the same transmission.
(City Traffic, N123AB, over XYZ-5 mile final, City Traffic)
I think this is smart because there could be some VFR only pilots out there that simply don't know what that fix is or how far out it is.

Thanks Jason, great video. I must say using autopilot in the process is a saver. I'm currently training on similar Tecnam doing IR trianig and it is required from us to manage the process single hand without the help of the autopilot. May be idea for next video in Multi Engine plane, no autopilot and simulated engine failure when shooting ILS and go around....
It's a lifesaver for sure. Like you mentioned though I still do a lot of handflying

I had a few moments at work, just figured out how to turn the ILS on xplane. Did a couple of ILS approaches in VMC thought to myself, "this is easy"... Mind you I don't even fly IRL. So, I'm like let me hand fly this bad boy in OVC 001 using the ILS... I'm so disoriented I don't even know where I am. It took me like 5 minutes to stop spinning at work.
Second attempt was much better.

Jason - It looks like you have a 55x. If that is correct, do you always go into approach mode just after the LOC starts coming in? I have a 55x and I'm trying to get a standard. I have some pilots telling me different times to hit the Approach mode.

Hey Tony! That is the 55x. I only waited because I was getting vectors. So I was on heading mode until I hear the classic "N245TA you're X miles from ABC turn left heading XXX cleared GPS 29 etc..." I then fly that heading on the bug and usually once I feel "stabilized and tracking a good intercept I'll click it over"
I've done it too early and had controllers get on me about not flying the intercept they asked etc.
Great video! However, I do have one question (for Jason or anyone else who would like to comment)... I've noticed when you do your run-up you do it at the end of your taxi... I like to do my run-up off to the side near parking before I taxi... I first started flight training at an airport with designated run-up areas (so we had to go there), but when I asked my instructor why this wasn't "normal" he said it was because the airport we were at was busy and we would hold-up other aircraft as well as because the run-up is designed to find any issues that would prevent take-off, and by doing that before taxi would prevent us from taking up the time to taxi out and back, plus the ground controllers time. This made a lot of sense to me as to not hold up other aircraft and to get your taxi clearance after you checked that the aircraft is "ready to fly". However, my next instructor (at a different airport) told me to "only" do the run-up after taxi because that is how he was taught... I was wondering who is right? and if it makes more sense to do the run-up before or after talking to ground and then taxiing. Thanks for any replies!
Neither is wrong. Some (busier) airports have run-up areas. Others do not. There is nothing wrong with doing it while holding short of the runway however, use common sense. Once you've got the hang of the aircraft you're are flying, run-ups shouldn't take that long to complete. If you know it will take you a couple minutes to do a run-up and read through a checklist then you may consider finding a safe place to do a run-up prior to taxi.
It really depends. In the winter time it takes a while for the plane to warm up. Doing a run up immediately after starting a cold engine is not the greatest idea. But I guess if you sit at idle a while there wouldnt be a problem. It would possibly be wasting money.

Think you left out the missed approach procedure during your approach briefing. I was taught always assume you’re going missed when flying an instrument approach.
Great video. Does the Tecnam have the following limitation: "12. A pilot with the seat belt fastened must occupy the left pilot's seat during all operations."?
So for us rusty pilots reviewing, it would be helpful to mention the aircraft your flying. Not all of us have viewed enough of your videos to know!

What’s with the P2006? Nice! FWIW I load cleared route and frequencies before taxi, helps simplify taxi etc.
When tower directs you to contact departure, I noticed (in a couple of videos) you push the IDENT ON THE TRANSPONDER just as you start talking to DEPARTURE. Please comment on this procedure?

12:35 Why is the WAAS Channel Number and WAAS Reference Path provided in the briefing strip of a GPS approach plate? How is the info applied? Nobody knows!
Do the controllers ever get upset about you throwing a “ident” in without them asking first? I have heard some will bark at you for flashing their screen?
It seems to flow better the way you did it without an extra radio transmission when they usually ask anyway.

Is it in the U.K. they have to sit the pilot on the right side? The attitude is displayed on the left side. Is he more accustomed in the right seat?

What I'd give to be able to fly with an auto pilot. The planes we use for IFR at my local airport still have ADF in them, no RNAV approaches for us :(

@@mauriciomedina9804 I've never flown a GPS approach before. Don't have access to a plane with a certified GPS. So, the GPS is connected to the HSI somehow and feeds the HSI localizer and glideslope info?

@@sixdegrees6434 Generally what happens in the US, is you'll transfer from tower to approach and call, "N1234A 1300 climbing 4000" then approach will say something like "I show you 2 miles southwest of X [any new instruction if exist]" and you'll reply "position checks [verify new instructions]" to verify that's you. They already know you've departed and your departure clearance and you've acknowledged any clearance instructions during your read-back of the clearance.
I will add that I have taken off from non-towered airports in the mountains where you cannot get approach or center on the ground and where they can't see you on radar or even hear you until you're quite high, and in those cases I'll add my position just to help them find me.

Why did you not write down any ATIS info other than Charlie? Seems like you should have at least written down Altimeter and cross checked your fancy glass panel?
Imagine doing all that without an autopilot.
