  • This video is random art inspiration and very much how I love to create. I show you how I start some of my "Art Poetry" style watercolour paintings. We use a coiled book of mixed media paper by Micheal's in house brand called Artist Loft. It's not the best surface for watercolour but I show you how I love to do colour cravinog exercises and ways I like to paint intuitively. I also show some unfinished works on paper that I paint over with acrylic paint and with the addition of collage paper. I talk about what inspires me in the moment and we wrap up the video with my process of covering up areas of the piece that I don't love , and find ways to explore what I do love in my work.
    Supplies I've mentioned:
Ocean Paper watercolour set "Around the World" (www.theoceanpaper.com)
Beam paintstones (Nontoxic, no plastic, watercolours in wrapped beeswax canvas) "Fiddlehead green.
Mozart Komorebi paints (Japanese brand) Available at Amazon Canada.
    Princeton #12 watercolour brush
    Masterson hand stay wet palette
    Master's brush cleaner
Canson XL 140lb mixed media/watercolour paper
Greyish toned white paper journal : Homesense Canada, "Monte Marte".
Coil art journal by Artist Loft (Micheal's in house brand), 11x14" book.
    90lb paper for collage
Liquetex GLOSS gel medium for my collage glue
"YES" paste for heavier papers as glue
Chisel tip Japanese paint pen by "Posca"
Decoart paints in Melon, Citron Green, and a mix of blues.
Golden fluid acrylic paints (Green gold, Turquoise phathalo)
Princeton round number 10, flat and angled brushes
mark making tools such as a pen
    Stabilio "woody" wax coloured crayons
    Artist mentions:
    Nadine Johnson Art
    Betty Krause Art
    Allison Dawrant

Hi Allison, you asked what we were thinking as you painted. I can tell you I was totally wrapped up in your creative process. I felt like I was in your art cupboard with you, painting along, loved the peek into your life, your family, your loves.Oops overboard as something else hit the deck, heart warming and engaging because its all the real you, don't ever change your style of presentation, the world is full of fake and polished. You have an amazing ability to connect and you are so generous with your teaching. Thankyou

Think it's very sad when people criticize others on utube etc. Lots of tutorials, tutors paint over older paintings with all sorts of mixed media these days, it's the modern thing to do with art. Also lots of people say um as well! I would say to the rudies to try and go through the process and not say um or erm or any other pausing sort of words!
Glad I got that off my chest. I and your other followers ❤ U🤗😘

Hi Allison! Your videos are so challenging to me but I make myself watch them so I can get out of my comfort zone and grow. I love how you paint focusing only on the color you're craving, the markings you want to make, or the paper you want to collage... You don't create with an end or result in mind... That's the challenge for me. At certain points in your process, for me it looks like you're undoing what you painted before, sometimes it looks worse and then all of sudden it looks marvelous. Like when you applied the greens on your painting, for me it was done, then you came back with the white again. Anyway, I just want to say I love to watch your process and I'm challenging myself to just do what I'm "craving" and what I like and not worry about the outcome but enjoy the process.
Last night I made a collage and I really want to apply white gesso and paint all over it, but I'm afraid of messing it up and covering up all the pretty papers. But I guess I just need to do it. I'm learning that to overcome fear and the unknown I just have to face it and do it! Thank you for sharing with us. ❤

thanks for sharing your insights with me and for watching my videos. You may not feel ready to cover up your collage and that’s okay. Take some time with it and maybe it is done? what is important is that you like it and the process was enjoyable. you may decide to leave it as is or go back to it years later… and either choice is great and personal to you.

I’m so grateful to be here too with you it’s so wonderful I have hundreds and hundreds of pieces like how you pull them out. I have those too. I’m so excited about looking at them and claiming them again as pieces that are like a work in progress. It’s like we’re rescuing pieces of art and bringing them into the light. It’s fascinating. And it’s exciting. I’m so glad I found you and I can relate to all the things you say. So helpful. I’m encouraged and I just want to let you know that. God bless you and thank God we are not perfect. How could we learn anything?????… if we were so perfect. How could we live a loving, rich full life if we were all perfect?❤❤❤❤ I want to learn how to do videos here on UA-cam. That’s my next project so that I can keep others encouraged as you do.❤️🤗 Keep going you’re doing great. I love your work too.

I've always been drawn towards mixed media so the idea of painting beautiful vibrant or dusky watercolours depending on what mood takes me, and then painting or mark making over in crayon, pencil, ink or acrylic really appeals to me and allows me to use my more comfortable skill of line to create something unique to me.
I think this is why I love the work that you do. It is unique to you.
