NUUK WENT DARK FOR 16 HOURS I Greenland Life I Doomsday Prep Begins

- Nuuk went dark for 16 hours, due to a HUGE power shortage from our hydro powerplant. Everything went dark, no electricity, no heating, no water and internet- so basically the worst place possible.
All other towns in Greenland lost telecommunication services and Nuuk was sent back into the stoneage.
In this video I tell the story of what happened and what I will be doing different, in order to prepare for such an event again. Let the doomsday prepping begin!

We Are BACK on the grid and most importantly, the INTERNET! 😁
I’ve been without power several times in my life. Longest was 9 days. I have a tent, emergency blanket, water, portable heat and RV antifreeze . I learned how to turn off main water main, drain the pipes and toilets place the antifreeze in the drains to protect the pipes. I can set up the tent in the living room to set up camp, I have a emergency toilet set up with a 5 gallon bucket with a snap on toilet seat. Emergency prep is good to know especially if you can’t move into a hotel. Camping gear and skills are transferable.
Thats awesome Ellen!
I really like the idea of being prepared and totally agree with camping skills are transferable😎
But 9 days without power, I have only tried that when being in a cabin, but never in a town/city I lived in
What an ordeal... glad things are getting back to normal.
Me too😅
Running out of energy in a country like Greenland must be really terrible, both for the heating and for the internet connession. A proper and good generator might be helpful in solving the problem. I live in Susa Valley, Tunin province, very close to France, and here temperatures are often low in winter and sometimes we have had a total blackout. Luckily we have double heating gas and wood with fireplace, but no genetator which could be very useful also for us. I hope you can no longer have blackout. Thank you for sharing
Our power is back again, but the problem is not fixed 100%..
Would be smart with multiple heating systems, relying on one is not that great
My husband andI used to live in the Outback of Australia, in the desert. We had power go out quite often but generally only for a few hours but a couple of times, it was days. So very hot with no aircon. One time it went out for a couple of days right before Christmas, had it up and running Christmas Eve but it went down around midday on Christmas Day. Lucky we had a gas oven and could finish cooking our Christmas lunch. Glad you were able to survive the coldness and that your work looked after you!
Oh my! No aircon in Aussie, that sounds cooking hot😅
We also had a short power cut christmas eve a few years back (it was restored within few hours), but it was due to all the extra christmas lights and people putting food in the oven😆
Christmas without lots of food, just isnt right, glad you were able to survive that christmas in the outback😊
First of all Alex, I’m glad you safe in Greenland. When I was living in the Middle East we had a power outage for few days and believe me it wasn’t easy. Agree 💯with all the things you were saying! We always have to be ready for any natural disaster and don’t wait till last minute. Once again, be safe out there 👍🏼
Thanks man😊 Sometimes life throws you a curveball😅
I can only imagine being in the middle east and no aircon😱
Hi I was reading this and for me it’s so relatable, because I live in Lebanon which is in the Middle East and recently their was a power outage for 3 days, thus it was very tough and hard physical and mentally.
@@AlexAmasaOlsen Anytime buddy 👍🏼
@@wolfpeeing Hopefully, you guys are back to normal. Greetings from NYC 🗽
What about to ask Inuits how to survive without electricity :)
😊
I was wondering why all flights were cancelled and the airport webcam was inop on that day when the weather was decent. Now I know. My situation in NYC is different. We are on the 28th floor and going up/down on the fire stairs is not practical. We have not had a complete power failure in a while but we have a water tank, freeze-dried food, lanterns and a camping stove. Since my trip there in 2019 I have had several covid cancelled visits but hope to return in the spring if the new variant doesn't result in another shut down.
Yup, we got completely disconnected for that day😅
Judging from your profile picture, are you one of those crazy pilots flying to Greenland in a private plane?😄
@@AlexAmasaOlsen no I'll stick to Air Greenland.
Alex try to find ecoflow delta generator there are top generator for the right purpose and the moment
I will look for that, I have a good eye to the Honda handheld generators, as it wouls be practical also to be able to use it for other off grid purposes
@@AlexAmasaOlsen bluetti is a good make very expensive but worthwhile to invest in !
So happy that my favorite UA-camr has uploaded a video to join me on my comute home 🥰
Very pleased I could accomodate you on your commute😊😁😘
I think loosing electricity in the homes is getting more often in the future, also here in Germany. I already thought about getting some firewood for the winters.🤔
Sounds like a good idea, its very uncertain now how Germany is gonna get power when all the nuclear powerplants were replaced with coal plants.😆
Yet another banger.
Also, was a worried, since my mum just moved up there 3 months ago, but I found out it was minor outages in Maniitsoq, compared to Nuuk.
Thanks!
Yes, Nuuk was pretty wild
We had a similar experience here in Alaska very recently. We had a massive wind storm with winds up to 80mph and our power was out for three days. My house got below 32°F and I had to burry my freezer contents outside in a snowbank.😂
Hehe, thats comical. But also necessary if you wanna keep the freezer goods😂
@@AlexAmasaOlsen I couldn't agree more! It's crazy just how similar our two homes are. I've been telling the wife that we need to go visit Greenland at least once. Maybe in the next two years we'll take a mini vacation there!
Best of wishes and I hope the new year is fruitful for you.
@@DirtyMikeandTheBoys69 Hehe, I have also seen footage from Alaska, and dayum it looks incredible!
We should have a new international airport ready in Nuuk in 2024, so hopefully a direct flight to North America!
Greenland would be a great place for a seed vault if there aren't those there already
We dont have a seedvault, but great idea😀
There is one on Svalbard if Im not mistaken🤔
@@AlexAmasaOlsen that's what gave me the idea, your area is also very cold and high latitude
I live in Malta right now; here outages mostly happen during storms, like the one we’re having right now :/
Shiiish, good luck😆
We had Storm Arwen little over a week ago on the North East England coast. I lost some of my roof bricks and the neighborhood had a few giant trees ripped out, fences blown down, and lots of down power lines, but the wind stayed for so long that they couldn't send anyone up the poles to fix so emails were sent asking families to consider letting friends with no electricity stay with them. The chances of more extreme weather happening more frequently are pretty high, being more prepared is something I've been looking at, it's just finding a balance of being prepared for the worst, but not collecting giant tubs of army rations and doing zombie apocalypse training, you don't want to be that guy....
Totally agree with thr last part you wrote😄
You dont wanna be that person. You just wanna be prepared enougj
Alex, will you post a video showing your voyage from Nuuk to Copenhagen?
I will try next time im going, which is in about two weeks😊
You are doing a lot of traveling. I am hoping Covid travel restrictions don't hinder my Iceland trip in April.
I was without power often in '92 because of war i know how this feels
It sucks and makes you feel very vulnerable, basically the whole society shuts down😅
@@AlexAmasaOlsen the worst part is when you in an elevator when this happens 😂
@@RizZaTV Thats gotta be some scary stuff! I was in an elevator in Naples, Italy this summer and I thought the same. That elevator was so tiny, and if I didnt have claustrophobia before, I would definitely after, im case the elevator stopped and you got stuck😆😆
@@AlexAmasaOlsen it happened to me couple of days ago i got stock in an elevator without any visible reason. Luckily the elevator was able to move back up so i could left it
must be freezing without heating over there
.
having a UPS or portable power station type device could be handy as it could keep your phones and radios charged. BTW how does one acquire things in Greenland if nobody has the item in stock?
In early 2020 when the flu hit the world, people started to hoard toilet paper rolls. When you prepare for the "doomsday", you are not one of those people fighting over toilet paper rolls in the stores because you have prepared. In my opinion, it is only a smart thing to have some extra necessary items as back up. And those things should be bought when things look good, not when it is too late already.
Prepping is a smart thing, one thing that we need to prepare also is food shortages (there are a lot of alarming news from Los Angeles ports of congestion - like traffic jam - also those ship jams will have ripple effects also other parts of the world as the ships anchored on the coast of the USA instead of bringing things to Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia etc).
Yes, doomsday sounds dramatic, but also those outages are dramatic as well. Especially without preparation.
I think we just have gotten too used to relying on an infrastructure and an already vulnerable supply line.
Toilet paper is nice to have, but I think having water and food is more of a concern😅
I did buy some extra toilet paper when Nuuk went dark though😉
@@AlexAmasaOlsen Yes, having food and water is crucial (even better if you have means to purify your water under extreme conditions (you can use sea water or snow/river etc as a source of water).
Toilet paper is kinda luxury item as you implied.
Personally, I have been prepping for some time. I guess I took the famous "red pill" and jumped into rabbit hole. :-)
The prepping YT videos is also an interesting niche from which you can make videos if you want.
Imagining your situation is giving me anxiety. Stay safe, Alex!
Hehe, sure will😁
Whenever you do buy any prep items, let us know. I'm curious what is available and price and what you can't get because of shipping to such a small city like yours. Stay warm.
Thanks Kyle
I will let you know😎
*Seagull swoops down and grabs the hose clamp* Oopsies. Haven't had any power outages in London, but you never know. Honestly, you really don't.
Yup, could happen - the seagull and power shortage in London ;-)
I once lost power for a week in the middle of the winter. Luckily I have a natural gas stove so I used that to heat my house. What fuel do you use for heating? If you wired a disconnect to your furnace it wouldn't take a large generator to operate your furnace, after all what you really need is heat.
A whole week...😬 We have district heating, which goes into a centrally placed heat exchanger, which then pumps out heated water to the apartments.
I was thinking it should be possible to wire a generator directly to my main electricalboard in my apartment. Then a heatpump would be good to have for heating purposes
Whats going on up there?
I have been watching the SAR radar images and the whole ice sheet seems to be blowing up.
Not sure, but it has been really warm lately and no snow😏
consider wind turbine...😉you have enough wind there...
Hahah, yes we have plenty here.. It just takes a very sturdy on... At my work we are testing the SD Wind turbines on 3-6kW, so far they have survived
@@AlexAmasaOlsen beter 10 kw and you can use the heat pump too
I live in California and the fires are a huge concern. (I have also visited Nuuk!). The bottom line be prepared but try to do it using renewable energy . We are killing the planet and we all need to do are best to stop using fossil fuels.
So true
hi Alex, i am planning to move to greenland but i am conserned that i won t be able to land a job. Can I contact you with more questions?
Hit me up on Instagram, just search for my name😊
