I think the handcuffs were more symbolic, he’s already trapped in his own body and now that they’ve cut him off from the internet he’s truly imprisoned. That’s why Ed said hopefully he has sweet dreams now because his consciousness is back in his body.
So, the things you missed that explain Fae a bit. She was in a gate accident. That means gates existed at this point already so they had space settlements. Next is that that accident destroyed the moon and essentially destroyed the habitability of earth. Desperation fuels adaptation. A lot of people probably died and a lot of culture was lost, but all of human effort was focused into moving into space. This led to RAPID change, but also a lot of the framework was already there.

Electricity was only widely distributed in major cities at the end of the 1800s, cars were only starting to be a thing and we were just developing radio. By the end of 1900s we had the start of high speed internet. we had super sonic planes, spaceflight and nuclear power. In 1988 my family had a pc with 56k of ram and no hard drive, floppies only. In 2000 when i left for college i had a pc with 256 megs of ram and 2 gigs of hard drive. In 2022 i bought a phone, a fucking phone, with 8 gigs of ram, 128 gigs of storage and an 8 core processor. Technology is changing at crazy speeds and we dont even think about it.
especially when you have pieces of technology that speed up all the other development. if someone in the next 10 years would create something like the gate technology they have in Bebop we would be colonizing the whole solar system in a couple decades and from the challenges we face on other planets we would invent thousands of groundbreaking technologies.
Each time I see Faye draw her old bed and lie down, my heart breaks again and tears come to my eyes. No matters how many times I rewatch this show, it's always this moment that hits me the hardest.
Two fantastic episodes...the first one is more classic Bebop and more philosophical, while the second one is more character driven. It's fascinating how Faye chooses to not find out about her past from her classmate, because I think she wants to figure it out on her own. The way her flashback came back in the shower, her reaction to them, and Spike's reaction to her confusion were also highlights. You both are on point about how Spike and Jet are starting to care for the ladies. Also, yes this show has crazy rewatchability especially since it's only one season. Sad to see Ed/Ein go as well, but we're finally at the big finale! So excited to see your reaction and discussion to those!
Some good songs on episode 24. I actually had the OST on CD in high school and used to listen to it on my walkman while walking my girlfriend home from school. It's kind of cool how music can jog your memory of those feelings. I almost forgot about that time of my life. Now I'm feeling like Faye, lol~
It's difficult to translate just how differently Faye sounds when she gets her memories back, it's not just how she speaks but her word choices. Spike has fought lots of people, but Ed's dad is a completely different weight class, making him a difficult opponent.

Basically the boy was addicted to the Internet and his own conspiracy theory. He became a 13 year old cult leader with the maturity of a 13 year old. He came to the conclusion that his dream world is better than living but he's lonely and thus the nightmare began. He's really running away from death himself. He's basically creating a utopia because he thinks it is unfair to live as a vegetable.
_People who can be controlled by tiny dots of light._ The prescience of this single cautionary tale from over twenty years ago about how people can be manipulated by media seems like it holds up even better today than it did back then.
The problem is people think that radical individualism is worthwhile in a world with 6.2 billion people. There are far too many people interacting with one another to make the "me me me" people work functionally in our society. The people in the bottom that work that way are just as widespread and cancerous as the people at the top. The people at the top are more dangerous when they take that stance because they are more capable to destroying thousands or millions of lives but only because of their ability to effect more people. It's less about being "evil" and more about being selfish and greedy while not understanding how reckless they really are. It could be cut down to the idea of "Well, I'm just doing what's good for me and if other people benefit, fine, if it cracks a few eggs, fine, that's on them not me, period." which doesn't sound that insidious but when that person's "cracked eggs" are destroying thousands of families in ends up being far more serious. The other side of that is at a certain point you literally can't do anything at all without negatively impacting fairly large groups of people to hopefully do even more good for an even larger group of people.
The hacker was angry about the hand he was dealt in life and wanted to hurt people. He was just using the cult as a honey pot to pull people in and end them. He's basically just a serial killer but due to his body's uselessness he was forced to go about this way because it's what his hacker abilities allowed him to do.
I know u guys are ahead so i can say this... but it makes me sad ed left.. It really does.bebop was a family but I'm glad ed left and didn't have to face what happened next. There is no way she would of handled that .. I do wish somewhere ..jet goes back for her later on in life and she rejoins the bebop with Faye. Every time I watch it and "call me " starts playing.. its like the worst feeling I watched this when I was in hs. At 17 now 41. And this show.. I rewatch it every year.. always pick up something new. .. bang by spike same bang as sympathy for the devil... spike getting the feeling of release .. release of all drama. No more " as if" but. hey mustache, Faye potentially LOST THEM THEIR BOUNTY. Faye has done this nonstop while riding on HIS SHIP. Jet keeps her on out of kindness and convenience. She has to pull her weight. She is essentially part of HIS TEAM. Get your head in the show dude and think.
The movie does take place after this episode. The movie is their last bounty before the finale. Ed was not going back to her father, she was blazing her own trail.
So dude on the left definitely gets it. Not sure if your cohost does. You're right about the symbolism of the handcuffs. It's meant to drive home the point that the kid is still a prisoner in his body despite his attempt to rise above his current state. This obviously doesn't absolve him of his wrongdoings but its still tragic to think about the idea of being trapped in your own mind with a body that won't respond to you. What you said about all of us being prisoners to one thing or another is very true. This shouldn't be taken as a defeatist stance and isn't saying we can't rise above like your cohost thinks. It's just a fact of our current existence. We are prisoners until we aren't. Love is the most beautiful and uplifting emotion in the world, but it can also breed the most ugly and harmful acts known to man. Love is a prisoner to this truth about itself.
I like how there's only like, four or five people we see in the entire series who are truly close to or on Spike's level physically in the entire series and one of them is Ed's dad. That guy beat the absolute bricks off my kung fu boy.

This episode (24) fucking wrecked me 23/24 years ago when it first aired and it still does every time even nearly a quarter of a century later. Started blubbering like a child as soon as Call Me Call Me started. For some reason Ein leaving always hits me the hardest, probably because I don't even want to imagine the heartache I would go through if any of my pets had ever just up and left one day. I don't know how anyone can watch that one without bawling their eyes out.
And the episode before the multipart finale hits you with a stab in the heart It still hurts me to this day, Faye I get she's an adult with a ship and can go wherever, but Ed and Ein? They're stuck there now, chasing either a father who doesn't want to father or whatever goose chase they can find on the planet, they were a family on the Bebop! Even when both left there were still plates left out for them! It sets up the finale in a way to keep them away but narratively whyyyyyy?
Episode 24, the innocents that are the woman, child and dog are ushered off stage before the climactic showdown that is the finale can begin. The beginning of the end. Its always bittersweet.
I find the psyche of malice is not the inherit contradiction of personhood, whereupon idealization manifests a material reality of trauma and oppression, but within a framework many others may know to realize, that the material world has imprinted upon the human psyche a zeitgeist of an exploitative reality so pervasive we have attributed a natural reality to its existence. We are shaped by our material reality, and all of our conceptions are formed by this material reality in a dialectical relationship. The reasoned morality ascribed to the philosophical frameworks we believe tantamount are the ascription of a perception governed by material conditions of a given time and place. I mean this to say, no one person nor their reasoning, or their abilities to affect as an individual, rather than their position they represent in society, are the single few responsible actors; no malice represented by a callous or cruel person is indicative of an innate cruelness, therefore, the superstructure of society built upon exploitation manifests that which we posit as inherit or innate greed, malice, and selfishness.
I love how we get the switch flipped on Judy's personality as soon as Punch informs her that Big Shot has been cancelled, showing that her bimbo act was indeed, an act. Of course, you already know (because you've already seen the end) that Punch is actually Alfredo, collecting his mother at the spaceport. I'm actually really happy that you caught that, because many reactors completely miss that fun little easter egg. You know, with Josh's moustache, maybe cosplay as Punch and Judy would work really really well. The catch, of course, is that Judy's costume is more scandalous than Faye-Faye's, so maybe not. ^_^
It was such a cool Easter egg! And that both there personalities were just acts! 🤣 My head cannon is that Alfredo told the studio that he wanted to leave the show so that he could spend time/take care of his mother 🥺💜 Then the studio just said “Ok yeah this show is nothing without him so we’ll just cancel it” 🤣 -Mehgan ✨
"Cowboy Bebop & the West" by Steak Bentley is the greatest video essay on youtube. I mean that completely sincerely, anyone who enjoys this show should watch it (after watching the Movie as well)
Bruh I LOVE THAT VIDEO!! Also if you haven’t seen it look up “ocarina of time a masterclass of subtext” probably the most well edited video I’ve ever seen on this platform and I’ve been here since 2005
Honky Tonk Women is such a fantastic episode. Really feels like a huge step in Faye's emotional journey. And ending with Ed's separation from the group is painful. The FLCL shirt rules, btw.
The Movie is set between episode 22 and episode 23. I feel that the movie is a nice bridge that gives some perspective on Spikes decision making in the episodes that follow. As far as the tech advancement, the gate collapse makes Earth hard to occupy, so the development of populations on other worlds could have happened quickly by need not want. Thanks for your reactions and reviews, it is always fun to see people watch this amazing anime for the first time.
These two episodes are here to let you know this is the endgame, there no turning back. The movie takes place before episode 24. When exactly is ambiguous but definitely before 24.
My theory is that Faye was affected by the Gate Disaster incident. The gate malfunction caused the moon the break apart/explode and the scene from her memories had the window portray the moon split.
Hey, you kind of forgot something it’s very important to series you kind of skipped over part of the storyline. There was a cowboy bebop movie released. You need to go back and watch that one. It was before Ed disappeared. It’s important to the storyline. You can always watch it afterwards, but don’t miss out on this one. It’s really good.
I commented on the movie quite a few episodes ago. I also recommended they watch it after the show. It's not forgotten, in fact they even mentioned it in their commentary. Did you not watch the reaction before posting this comment, or read anyone else's comments before posting this one?
I would watch the movie afterwards, as it was released. I would even wait a bit before watching it. Half the fun of the movie is really coming back to these characters that you've grown to miss.
Yeah, the handcuff was symbolic, he was cut off from the net by Ed, his punishment for his crimes was being stuck in the prison that is his body.
Did you guys not notice that the hacking into scratch was done by Ein? Turns out Ein is way more gifted at hacking systems than Ed.
Well he was able to sense the high frequency signals and respond to them, humans can’t.
I seriously doubt he was trained to hack, he mostly likely just watched Ed doing it enough that he figured it out for himself.
“see you space cowgirl, someday, somewhere!” 💔
😭💜
today that line would've meant there's gonna be a spinoff, because the network wants to make more money^^ back then it was just a heartfelt message

Bruh I LOVE THAT VIDEO!! Also if you haven’t seen it look up “ocarina of time a masterclass of subtext” probably the most well edited video I’ve ever seen on this platform and I’ve been here since 2005
The handcuff was just them claiming the right to the bounty.
Got the tissues on deck. Here we go!! T_T
You guys deserve more subs. I love your videos. Wishing nothing but the best for you both.
Thank you so much that means a lot to us 😭😭
Bang...
My theory is Ed's dad has been exposed to so many fumes from asteroids falling that it's affected his short term memory. Occupational hazard.
1:06:10 i agree i always thought Fayes accident wasn't apart of the Stargate incident. I thought she was frozen for closer too a century...
The Cowboy Bebop movie occurs at some point before episode 24, if that was on the watch schedule at all.
The most emotional egg-eating scene in media history. Fury tried to take the crown but couldn't quite manage it.
So at the end of Brian scratch.. u see a body laying with a yellow shirt.. thats one of the 3 amigos..
Well they're supposed to haul him off after handcuffed but they didn't collect the bounty looks like
I told y’all that you’re gonna need tissues , and this is just the start. Ed had to go, it’s time for the grownups to finish their stories now……👉
Woohoo FLCL shirt!
The movie takes place sometime between episodes 10 & 24
In case you didn't notice, Andy is at the festival dressed as a Samurai, so it's confirmed for 23 & 24.
NO the movie takes place before brain scratch. Between episode 22 and 23
Hope you both watch the movie before getting to the last few episodes.
I would watch the movie afterwards, as it was released. I would even wait a bit before watching it. Half the fun of the movie is really coming back to these characters that you've grown to miss.
Those of us who watched the show as it was released probably all agree the movie should be watched after the series end. It's a palette cleanser.
Should watch the movie before watching the finale
