Yeah “free will” might be a theme in this story
some people bring it up in their reviews/discussions
@@gg_sam7847 oh yeah, I’m being sarcastic. Free Will is absolutely a theme of this show. It may be the only theme of the show.
@@cubencis not really there are many themes in the show but this one is the principle one
Freedom!
@@cubencis I was being sarcastic too lol
Your reviews of AOT are my most anticipated videos on youtube in a loooong time.😁
"Everyone had to be drunk on something to keep pushing on ... Everyone was a slave to something"- that line gets better the more I rewatch the show
Kenny Ackerman will always be in my top 10. #yeehaw
The most truthfull line of this show. And reality too...
This and Everyone is a slave to something by Askeladd.
Really hope Merphy watches the Levi OVA before finishing season 3. It adds so much more impact on everything that happens next
How ?
@@duchesse178Levi’s old friends, and how he met Erwin
@@coolguy8473 oh yeah ! Didn't think about that
She has
Nah. I wish she go to s4 already so much peak. Hange Zoe got killed by collosal titans, Mikasa lives, EREN DIDN'T SURVIVE IN THE END 🤞
guys she is here , she is gonna reach the peak
Oh man can't wait for the ravings for this part and part 2
I'd argue the concept of "freedom" is the biggest theme of Attack on Titan. Which I guess is just another way of saying free will in many ways.
Which form of freedom tho Armin or Eren. Freedom from or freedom to. And a third that isn't as important here
Read no regrets (the levi side story) before s3 end
She did before starting part 1
Now that you've brought it up yourself, I would go as far as to say Free Will is THE theme of AoT but that is all I will say. Keep doing your thing Merph
Edit: Also no, this was a good stopping point because S3 Pt. 2.... hoo boy.
Id say the main theme is about freedom in general and free will is a part of that
"is free will even a theme in this story?" Oh boy 😂
Aot normies how to Not spoil challenge 😲
@@AntiMage99 Themes aren't really spoilers...
@@karlwilker579 anything that sets up expectations is a spoiler
@@bishaladhikari9499 See that's too broad for me. By that definition anything could be a spoiler. For me spoilers have to be more specific than saying "the series is about free will." Something like (end of season 3 spoilers)
there being an entire world beyond the walls is an actual spoiler.
@@karlwilker579Ok ur playing dumb just like the dude on the top. Aot normies is like that i guess? ill try to mimic it on actual spoiler 😊
Btw, Hange Zoe got killed by collosal titans, Mikasa lives, EREN DIDN'T SURVIVE IN THE END 🤞
The Bystander episode with Keith sadies was one of my favorites in the show. I was just so fascinated by the messages in his backstory and impressed with how effectively this one episode got me to empathize and care about a side character that we haven't seen since the start of season one.
It's not progenitor titan. It's Founding Titan.
Its translated both ways
While there are some differences the anime made when adapting the manga in each season, the first quarter of season 3 is the most different between the two mediums. While I can understand trimming and rearranging some of the material to streamline the story for a visual medium, I can’t help but feel the loss of some character moments that brought an emotional human core to the story, such has Historia’s emotional breakdown over Ymir staying with Reiner and Bertholdt or Dimo Reeves’s impact on the conflict itself. As a result of a lot of the cuts, the first few episodes of this half of season 3 feel like they're one a breakneck pace trying to cram all the story details necessary to follow the coup d'etat of the government while maintaining the momentum of the action set pieces of the plot.
Dimo Reeves also lead to my personala favorite gag with Historia and Levi when she was made queen and the anime removed it because for flashy action
Chainsawman! You are gonna have a wild ride with that one
did she say she's gonna read it ?
Makima is the main villain on part 1💯
Season 3 is where AOT got truly interesting for me. Don't get me wrong: I like the previous two seasons but for me this is the moment where the story gets more interesting, you know?
Of course! We finally get several answers, a lot gets recontextualised, the story and world open up and we get several more questions.
“What a burden to put on a child.”
I think Merphy’s found the single best sentence to summarize all of AoT. That’s up there with “It’s your damn family again, Garp!” as a summary of One Piece lol
When you do Season 4, would you consider also doing it as per the story arcs like you did for Season 3? There's 3 generally agreed-upon arcs for the final season, but the anime had production issues so it split things up weirdly. If so, for the anime it's S4 Episode 1-8, then 9-21, then 22 to the finale. For the manga, it's chapter 90-105, then 106 to 122 (or 123), and then onwards to the finale. Feel free to consult with whoever is giving you the numbers :D
You should continue calling her Historia ✨, everyone knows her as that now that you’re in that part of the story
So happy she is reading Attack it is such a legendary series
She said she never watch the endings, which means she didn't watch the ending of season 2 PLEASE WATCH THE ENDING OF SEASON 2
25:36 it's Carla not Clara 😂
The part that caught me off guard was U'VE SEEN DDLC!? WHA!?
Monday gonna be a good day. This also was a good day. Just saying I have something to look forward to 🍿
I ended up doing a full rewatch since Merphy started reviewing it and I could be refreshed
Should read Mikasa's ova manga version, lost in the cruel world
This part was definitely slower and while expanding more in the story we look inward to the people inside. The enemy was humans this arc, and the fear that people could potentially kill each other over resources, people in power wanting to maintain power while also fearing someone could take it. I like the theme of "Us vs Them" but instead of them being titans it was other people, whether it was Kenny's faction or the government controlling people or for the coup wall vs wall.
As for Rod...I *agree* he is a PoS, but I think that in his last moments you see that he sort of shared the mentality of the scouts. "Yes we can defeat them! Why don't you do anything!?" But time and time again this founder/power does something to the will of the people who inherit it, from his father, to his brother, to his daughter. Very scary.
Aot is honestly top 10 for me
You mean top 1. 😁
Top 1
Merphy just say founding titan 😭😭 no need progenitor lol
I thought that was very charming (not mockery, I truly mean that) 😊
I thought that was very charming (not mockery, I truly mean that) 😊
Some online manga translations used that term, which is probably how she read it. I think it sounds cool tbh lol
Why is Monday so far away 😫

The way you describe the surrender of free will to some external entity that will control your body remembers me so much of Eshonai and the fused.
Really surprised you did not talk about 'Bystanders' one of the most underrated & best ep. of this season, first time I watched that end credit scene in middle of the night alone by myself I got mini heart attack, thought my screen was glitching & file was corrupted, also believe me when I say next season is one of the greatest run of episodes in television history, if you check IMDB it is right there with the breaking bad with most 10/10 eps of any show ever, for me it is peak anime far surpassing anything in history of the medium!
Was not expecting a doki doki literature club mention from merphy 😂
My top scene in AOT is the scene between Urie and Kenny Ackerman, best scene in my opinion which is basically the message of this manga. In regard of Historia unfortunately she is so selfish that in the end remains a puppet queen. Kenny was a wonderful character
"Was it violence that made us work together?" God I love this scene so much. Because no, if Uri chose violence that day he would have killed Kenny and.... that's it. Instead he reached out to him with sympathy and offered friendship. This is the best piece of dialogue in all if AOT.
Merphy Napier I recommend Hellsing or Devilman for Halloween they're Classic and short reads Hellsing is 10 Volumes and Devilman is 5 Volumes
For sure Hellsing, such a great ride. Still one of my favorites.
And she could do Hellsing abridged afterwards.
Hellsing is quite the ride
@@peterepeatepete2845better than the original IMO
@@Marqui91It's better than the first anime adaptation yeah but not the actual manga-canon Hellsing Ultimate OVAs.
the first few seasons of AOT was just humongous among us
I recommend PARASYTE. Solid manga, S-tier anime, very intriguing character development.
She should definitely try the anime
I second that !
Kennnnnyyy!
Hey merphy. Could you soon make a new ranking anime video or a top 10 or something so people like me who arent really into manga can try to find recommendations?
I’m old enough to remember how “Attack on Democracy” almost killed AOT when it was still releasing weekly.
It was miserable. I always recommend the anime during that part.
I actually got goosebumps from some of your interpretations because I know what‘s coming next in this story.
This arc was incredible in the manga. I‘ve rarely seen so many side characters being used with such efficiency and without it ever feeling forced in any type of media.
Amazing video
I actually got goosebumps from some of your interpretations because I know what‘s coming next in this story.
Amazing video
23:05 hehe... I wouldn't wave this part away so casually. It's very, very, VERY important for a time later in the story 😰
33:08 so glad you’re talking about the Ackermann and Reiss family relationship because I never think of Mikasa and Levi with Historia. Cool to think that they broke free from the cycle and paving their own paths and like you say working with each other on their own free will (essentially i think that’s what you’re saying). Instead, it’s Mikasa-Eren and Levi-Erwin in the forefront of my mind, not Mikasa/Levi - Historia.
Weirdly enough, some of Isayama's biggest influences were Frank Herbert, Breaking Bad, and a popular Japanese visual novel called Muv Luv. But probably the biggest influence is actually Michael Moorcock. And you can definitely tell in the back half of the story. I think it also explains why the ending was controversial. AoT's target audience are Shonen readers, so I think there was some confusion with Isayama's ending. Definitely keep Frank Herbert and Michael Moorcock on your mind when reading the story.
This season made be like erwin's character so much. Surprised you didn't mention him.
This is only part 1 and will definitely mention him in part 2
That's part 2
For me there is such a massive jump from s2 to s3 that I can’t even think of them together, but I’m curious if, as a someone getting into the story when it’s already finished, that even exists for you.
I just love your reactions and commentary so much. One of the best aot reactors. And I've seen a lot.
Probably a good thing that you read the manga alongside the anime. Gives more context and easier to understand some things if you watch and then read about them
You didn't understand rod reiss at all merphy. The twist in the story was that he in fact was actually worried about the memories influencing frida and the rest of his family cause he saw how it changed his brother. Not because he was a coward but because he saw it happened to all of them he was the only one who needed to be normal cause if he changes too then everything is gone for. He would have accepted the burden if he didn't lnow the memories would changed him too . He wanted humanity to be free of titans too. Also what rod did say was exposition, in the anime it feels more clear. He wasn't lying to eren , the reiss are the only ones who can use the power. Eren cannot. I don't understand why you hate him , he literally is just trying to save humanity from titans
I wonder how long til she realizes AOT is basically Dune. It took me years
Why is an Attack on Titan season 3 part 1 video the way I learn Merphy knows what DDLC is lmao
i can't wait to see what she thinks of season 3 pt 2 onwards. As great as the show has been so far it reaches a whole different level from this point onwards
There is nothing more satisfying than a Merphy who actually feels a need to tell herself to reel it in a bit because her passion for the story unfolding is just that immense.
It makes me feel alive. ❤
I'm so excited for this video, this is my absolute favorite arc of the story and it's right before what is the actual best arc imo. I could listen to people talk about season three for hours.
Eren doesn't possessed by the first king's ideal. So rod reiss was telling the truth, the original power of the first king wouldn't transferred fully into eren's body.
12:30 That race talk made me cringe pretty hard, ngl. Not only is it off course in terms of story, it's also reinforces the misconception that there even are different races within the human race. There aren't. Ethnicites, yes, but not races.
Have faith in yourself. One of the lines in the main theme that’s played since Season 1 (Translated from German) is “Is this our fate, or our will?”
I hope merphy checks out Land of the Lustrous/Houseki no Kuni. It is similar to AOT. The art is GORGEOUS
I hope when Merphy is finished with AOT she will do an AOT vs One Piece freedom rant.
WHAT HUH ALREADY?!
oh my GOD YES INCOMING PEAK
things are getting a bit free will-y indeed
The prologue is finally over
7:22 I guess that's why his dad didn't chose him as his successor 😂
Just from looking at the thumbnail I’d think season 3 is the bondage freak off season or somethin
Amazing reviews! Would've loved to hear your thoughts on the Coup. 🙏
" i dont know where Eryns story is going" OHHHH BOY MURPH. OH BOY
season 3 part 2 is going to change everything
cant wait to the moment of "choice" and see witch side merphy is in this colossal plot twist.
Historia You're supposed to call her Historia
this is so cool and all, but when the hell is she reading berserk
This is the section of the story that finally made me like Eren as a character and truly hooked me into the series
i would feel disgust of someone who had her freedom taken from her like frieda did +:+
"Is free will a big theme in this story?"
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa mayyyyyyybeeee
Season 2 and 3 are great bits of storytelling in anime.
Aot isn’t a shonen or some braindead power fantasy. It’s all about the human psyche.
It literally is a Shonen lol
It's part of a demographic
I understand why people thing it isn't, but it IS a shonen. It's just more mature and rich than most other shonen media.
Yay she did not skip the credits.
"Sorry Rod I'm not taking it." .....Giggity 😂
Merphy impresses me every time with how well she understands the story early on.
How does it feel to read a manga where people don’t come back to life ?
Seems like inherited will is an important theme in AOT and One Piece.
Murphy teams up with Zoro "Minorities "
Season 3 part 2's gonna throw her like how the beast tossed the horse.
Can't wait to meet Carla's sister and Eren's aunt Clara
"Is free will a big theme in this story?" lol just u wait
i can't wait to see your reaction for the next part
30 mins!! And it’s not even the vlog
Let’s fucking gooooo welcome to peak ❤
Clara gang 😭
You call rant I call a good Monday
all i’ve been waiting for.
You are so not ready for the end of Season 3😏
Historia is a best girl
Is it starting or not yet...
This show is a blessing.
YESSS IVE BEEN WAITING
Kenny really verbatim said _I don't really care about my family, or their grudge against the king_ and then went and checked on his extended family down in Shiganshina, searched high and low for his younger sister, went off to kill the king as soon as his grandpa croaked, and raised his nephew to the best of his ability. Like, _my guy!_ say again how you don't care, and maybe you'll even manage to convince someone other than yourself.
Some day ppl will stop imagining a whole ass other character in place of Rod Reiss
He's just a coward that doesn't want to die, that's it
He genuinely believes in what he says
Well, unless you're trying to say he's hallucinating and trying to imagine whole false backstory prior to his death.. for no reason...
Clearing misconception no.2
(No outside knowledge used, all of it is from this part of the season)
No there's no persecuted minority races
I'm fact it's the opposite. Those who can't have their memories erased became nobleman families
Two of those families rebelled against king, which Mikasa is descendant of
Kenny and Levi are descendants of on of those rebelling families
may i recommend chainsaw man. i would like to discuss the subtle and not so subtle subtext of that series.
are u sure 😯
@@ahmed61299 very much. it may not seem like much but bleach, jujutsu kaisen and chainsaw man, all 3 share a very subtle form of story telling that take the idea of art is subjective and up to interpretation to an extreme level. in fact, for its latest chapter, I do have an unedited quick work review out (csm 179 ) where I talk about what IMO fujimoto has tried to showcase through his art and that chapter.
i love the themes of toxic motherhood. its good
@@ahmed61299she has good reading comprehension
@@LilienNacht exactly. that is one of the biggest ones and I love it.
and denji shows us so well how badly it affects him. people treat him like a h**ny protag. but he is still learning how emotional intimacy works in many ways. hwo to not only form a relation but how to maintain it. and oh the recent stuff regarding nayuta and how it tied into his choices were brilliant.
We jokingly call this arc 'Attack on People' because it's people attacking people instead of the focus on the titans in the earlier seasons
I have never heard anyone call it that
i remember people calling it the "politics arc" but I've never heard "Attack on People" lol
if you liked Historia's arc this season then I cannot wait for you to be dissapointed by final season but what do I know, ending defenders are still going to side with Isayama's poor decisions with her characterization...sigh
I'm a little disappointed the fans let her watch that "teaser". The last time I was showing a new watcher the anime, we both got surprised by it. Almost immediately, my friend called out what was gonna happen. I never said whether he was right or wrong. But when the scene came up, it didn't hit as hard for him. I skip that teaser every time now.
I really dislike the lack of Free will of the characters at this point, they basically become puppets of long dead people
where is the lack of free will? everyone has free will lol
You severely misunderstand the story then because that is absolutely not what happens.
We need to get type-moon on her radar it’s the strongest franchise in anime with their base abilities giving them immeasurable speed. & my power scaling playlist has all the proof we need, my essay playlist also proves it has the best written characters in anime especially in the girl aspect.(which some shonen struggle cough* Naruto) Like generic anime channel’s shirou vid, it’s billion$ budget & ufotable come together to give us peak animation of any year they drop or period. It’s also the lotr of anime with lore on lore & galore.
