    I've put cuttings directly in the soil without removing lowest bud/leaves and got a 60-70% success rate on Vancouver Island. Thanks for sharing as these are some of the healthiest plants around, easy to propagate and grow so fast and produce fast.

    All you have to do is let the roots run and they'll take over whatever area they're in. I had one bush that I tilled around and then applied mushroom compost and mulched then those things took off came spring.

      Yes, also whatever seeds they drop will multiply pretty easily. I take cuttings if I want to get them started in a new area, or have some to gift to friends and even to sell. Lots of ways that propagating cuttings can be helpful to folks. 😉

    Arizona, we have tree elderberries, S. Mexicana. I have one. Last year was very bad with smoke blowing in from Cali fires, no monsoons, and so on, and one died. Thanks for the video. I hope the last one thrives here, and I can take cuttings. Right now, grape cuttings, figs, pomegranate and so on are all (God willing) rooting. I was told, root in the dark. In the light, if leaves come on, it steals nutrients from the stem needed to root. nnio

      Interesting about rooting in the dark! It makes sense!! I hope your elderberry survives and you are able to take some cuttings from it!! 🤞🤞🤞🤞

    You don't have to stone in your window seal, just cut a piece of plywood and tile the surface and or then add the stone. I will be a "stone insert" you can make lots of things this way that are removable and do not damage.

      Great idea! I actually have moved to a new place so I never got to try that in the window but I will keep that in mind if I decide to do that here!

      @@WildOnesHomestead I have built tons of things this way. Its pretty cool to do a fireplace platform this way too. You can move your faux fireplace and it looks like its built in :O) thank you for your idea too my cuttings are already rooting! Merry Christmas! p.s. you could actually use one inch tiles with a lip that you can wipe and keep your flowers from getting your ledge wet too if you keep seedlings there often. I have a friend that makes countertops using broken teacups.

    Unfortunately I have to sell my property and move in town, but I will still live off the land and be as self reliant as I can...I will be taking some elders along, wherever that may be....

    They grow from seeds easily. Just set some seeds in some tree leave compost outdoor in winter. They will start germinating spring.

      Oh yes! I never collect all the berries,

    What time a year is best to do it?

    • @WildOnesHomestead
      @WildOnesHomestead  Рік тому +1

      Early spring just as the leaves start to bud. Though elderberry are pretty hardy I wouldn't be shocked if you could make it work later in the season too

  • @lydiahubbell6278

    what time of year did you cut them?

    • @WildOnesHomestead
      @WildOnesHomestead  8 місяців тому +1

      In the spring, when the buds start to form but before they leaf out. I have heard of people doing it other times of year as well with mixed success.

  • @HerHealthyHome

    This works for other tree cuttings as well, right?

    • @WildOnesHomestead
      @WildOnesHomestead  3 роки тому +1

      I'm not sure if it works for *all* trees and the time of year that is best probably varies, but I would definitely say it is worth giving it a shot if it is something you want more of!!

    Can you do this in september and plant them in fall time? The Netherlands is zone 8a/8b I think. So could it work?

    • @WildOnesHomestead
      @WildOnesHomestead  Рік тому

      You just need to do it before the leaves start to open or just after on the nee growth. If you wait too long the stems get too hard and chances of success are a lot less. It may still work, but I've never tried so im unsure.

    • @WildOnesHomestead
      @WildOnesHomestead  Рік тому +1

      Oh no, I have seen people snip them and stick them straight into some soil and have them take root! If that doesn't work, I'd try dipping the sliced end in some rooting hormone.
      I'd say the biggest thing for success really is the time of year when you snip them, too!

      @tatteberry73 good!! Elderberry really are incredibly hardy so you can do it!! I've moved all my (BIG) plants around several times and haven't lost one. Had a little die back from branches but that's it. 😅
