@Homestead Heart, I call it an even trade. You took the fear factor out of him learning how to pressure can and he helped take the fear factor from propagating elderberry cuttings. You two are awesome with your teaching others new things we wouldn't normally do or know how to do. I've been canning for years (water bath & pressure) but I've learned new tricks of the trade watching you both. Your easy-to-understand ways make me feel I CAN DO IT and I DO!! A few months ago I lost two chest freezers full of meat I had been buying for hard times coming. I decided I wasn't going to EVER let that happen again so I began pressure canning everything in my remaining 3 chest freezers. I had one full of butter and cheese and thanks to YOU, I successfully canned all that butter and now have it safe in my pantry. I also found out how to can cheese and got that done as well. I made soups with my veggies (homegrown) adding some of the meat I had not lost, dehydrated what I could, and got all the freezers CLEARED OUT & I'm getting rid of them. With things as they are in this country now, I dare not risk depending on having power to run those beasts. With Leads tips, I've got a solar generator (BougeRV 716 & 2-23 qt fridge/freezers that will take care of my refrigeration/freezer needs as well as my lights & a fan to move the air in our hot/humid summers. I have a dehumidifier for emergency water & bought a deep water well hand pump as well as an AlexaPur Pro (& extra filter cartridges) to purify water if need be. I also built his MURKY BERKY water purification system to purify rainwater from my rain catchment systems for my gardens & animals. I'm even working on an aquaponic system to grow food that will HOPEFULLY run itself by using full spectrum grow lights for my plants but will also charge my smaller solar generator via a solar panel that will run the grow lights & water pump. I got 36 new chicks this past spring to replace my older ones as well as new young meat rabbits to replace the 15 older, non-productive ones for some of my meat. I butchered & canned all 15 older rabbits (10-12 lbs each & FULL of fat). I saved & washed all the fat, rendered it down, and got 1 gallon & one quart of RABBIT oil (it does not solidify once rendered) as a standby for hard times or for greasing cutting boards & other needs around the homestead. Now it is deer hunting season & I'm ready to hit my 40 acres of woods to stock up on some good red meat while there are still deer to hunt. I live off the land as much as I can and do all my own skinning & processing of all wild game I harvest. Even found out how to can fish & shrimp so all my fish/shrimp from the freezers are safe, too, now. I fish (fresh/saltwater) during the growing season of my garden(s) & fruit harvesting to make the best use of my QUIET TIMES before harvest season begins. Never a dull moment around my homestead...but LIFE IS GOOD & I AM BLESSED!!
Best down to business elderberry cutting video I've seen. Love that technique laying em down length wise. Thats gonna make some serious roots and nice thicket quickly. Thanks friend.
I’m getting ready to plant elderberry cuttings and saw your video. You explained it very well and gave good and helpful info. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I like and appreciate the fact that you're literally teaching us the how to's and the different methods of doing so and that you're not rooting it for us,thank you for all both you and Lady Lead do,can't wait to recieve my elderberry cuttings
Woo hoo!!! Just ordered mine… can’t wait to get it. I also bought 2 small Meyer lemon trees this morning!! Thanks Lead for inspiring me to grow my own food and fruit trees!!
Lead …. Your Awesome! Your Elderberry rules ! More And More Folks are discovering Elderberry Watching Your UA-cam videos …. Thank you for sharing Goodness ! 🤠
Hey LF73✋🏾 YOU ARE AMAZING!!! You say you don’t know EVERYTHING & I understand where you are coming from & WHY you say that but YOU SIR KNOW ALOT MORE THAN MOST! That cutting in the wet paper towel in the ziplock bag shocked me. I seen seeds root but not cutting aka sticks! 😆
EXCELLENT video that covers ALL the ways to start your elderberry cuttings! I have used all the examples you showed and have had success with them all. I would like to mention to those that are pruning their own elderberry trees and using them for cuttings that sometimes not all will produce new growth or roots. Sometimes you will have a cutting that is a dud for whatever reason and doesn't do anything. It is rare but does happen. I'm sure those you sell are PRIMO cuttings, so don't let what I just said deter folks from buying from Mr. Lead. He KNOWS what he is doing and cuts where they will sprout or root. I'm making that statement for newbies that may already have elderberry trees & trying to propagate their cuttings for the 1st time. I planted 6 1ft tall potted cuttings (I had rooted during the summer) last fall and by this past summer they were towering at over 15-20 ft tall and actually produced tons of berries this year. Even some I had still in pots flowered as seedlings. I found the best place to plant mine were in an area where the ground stays moist, or even occasionally stands in water. THEY LOVE lots of moisture. They are native to my area and some area's I have picked from and got cuttings from (my secret locations) are actually in mucky, marshy areas. They were the biggest trees with the most berries. The variety we have here (coastal AL) can be invasive as they will spread roots from the mother tree and new trees will pop up & grow. So my advice is to plant them in an area where you can let them grow WILD & FREE for more berries if you're wanting them for medicinal tinctures. LOVE LOVE LOVE your channel and even tho I don't get to catch many of your live streams, I watch them all. You are our lifeline for valuable info we will need for hard times coming! Blessings to you Leadfarmer73 & LadyLead (just subscribed to her channel, too!).
Elderberry is so easy to grow. Here in the midlands my neighbors landscaper broke a branch of my elderberry so I simply chopped it in 6-10 inch pieces and laid them flat in the ground (maybe watered it once) and up came some trees. I was upset at first but I got like 6 more trees from his carelessness. Win win
Last year, I was late getting to them and just took cuttings and stuck them directly in the ground. Most sprouted out and grew, but I should have started a month earlier because they suffered in the drought we had. I'm getting ready to go outside and take cuttings now and deciding on either repeating the direct planting or bringing them in for extra care. Thanks for the video.
The bag method worked great for anyone wondering. I stored it, forgot about it, remembered I had it, and now have two shoots at the top and one at the bottom. I tried the cup method but I was very impatient since I was looking at it everyday.
Wow. I bought mine from you about 6 weeks ago and it looked just like that… a stick. I was like “what is this”!! Stuck it in a water bottle in soil and watered it. Let me tell you, she is doing beautifully!! She now has roots and leaves and I just moved her into a pot yesterday. Thank you again.
Thank you so much for showing this knowledge!!! Im about to trim my elderberry bush in my yard but Im not sure if I can grow them from cutting.. So this is awesome!!!
Hey Lead, I used the water in a glass method for the one I purchased from you. I’m glad you did this video because I was wondering where the roots were lol.
Loved your video... so well done! Thanks for sharing! I've been propagating plants for years , but always left my black elderberry plants alone. Your instructions couldn't have been any clearer, and I'm excited to do this. I like you! How do you like that after watching you for 10 minutes? Anyway, I plan to root them in the perlite/vermiculite, but I just have one question... How long before we can expect roots? 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 2 weeks, haha! Thanks again for such a well made video! I appreciate you!
Hallelujah!! I'm so glad your video came up to show me what to do with my elderberry cuttings from a friend. Made the V/P mix and they are ready to go. Thanks so much!!!
I wish I had the ability to grow a garden When I was younger I had all the garden therapy, When I was gardening they was no social media or stuff like you gardeners are doing. You have a great green thumb. Thanks for the lesson.
Lead, I have huge bags of Perlite & Vermiculite so this was very helpful and easy. Thank you for making this video. This is way too easy for the amount of confusion I had wondering which way is up.
Ive Really learned a lot from all your videos u have really encouraged me to get up and start up me a garden and I just love u and Lady Lead you have been a true blessing in my life
Oh, I like that with the clear cup in the blue cup! That’s cool. That will be really helpful to know when to repot tomatoes… before they get too root bound. Great tips!
Thanks so much lead for this wonderful information!! Does all the methods that you showed require dark and cool spaces to store? Or can the peekaboo method and the water only method be in a normal location?
Love you Lead. Priceless info, so simple even a blind man can understand it. Which other cuttings would this method work on? Only elderberry? I pray not.
This video takes me back to the greenhouses at WSU! I loved working in them, propagating all sorts of plants and trees; pinching secondary growth to gain the big pom football mums; and delving into the many ways to propagate plants. Thank you for sharing this video! I live in CA, will this work the blue elderberry the same way? Also, sorry if you said it and I missed it, does it matter when I get the cuttings? I wasted my last big batch of cuttings. 😭 They’re all still sticking out of a bucket of dirt, all dead. I kept the dirt wet, I’m thinking they totally dried out in the heat on the deck. I didn’t cover them and we have very low humidity. Thank you so much for teaching us.
I am so glad I found your videos!!!!! You have no idea! You guys are exactly what I was looking for. My husband studied horticulture so with you guys and his education we are on our way to our dream garden and yard. I can’t wait to start. We’re going to buy our house first and then it’s on. @leadfarmer73 man you were so right about the elderberry cutting in the 1/2 perlite 1/2 vermiculite! HOTDOG man has shoots everywhere. Man thanks alot for this lesson!!!! I can't wait to try sugar cane😁
I love this! I’ve bought several from sellers on Etsy and they die every time. I’ve even tried to put them in rooting hormone and never had success. I’m going to buy some from you and use these tips.

This video takes me back to the greenhouses at WSU! I loved working in them, propagating all sorts of plants and trees; pinching secondary growth to gain the big pom football mums; and delving into the many ways to propagate plants.
The cool thing is you can reuse that V/P mixture by spreading it to dry in the sun.
I am here because of Mr & Mrs H at Homestead Heart. You could call them Mr & Mrs 200K. Lol!
Peace on your doorstep.
