Preparing Livestock For Extreme Weather | -40° F WindChill | Winter In Wisconsin Homestead Style
Caring for our animals is a huge part of what we do here every single day. A huge part of that is paying close attention to the weather. We need to know of anything significant that could be coming to be sure we have the animals fully prepared.
It's been a while since I've shown our chore routine, so I'm going to walk you through the nightly round of chores and explain things that we are doing differently right now knowing there is some nasty weather coming.
We had 45°F on Friday, which is unusually warm for us this time of year, and by Sunday morning, it was -8°F. While it will warm up a bit over the day on Sunday, overnight into Monday, and even Tuesday, it is going to be COLD. -15°F is predetermined with wind chills, making it feel like -40° F.
So there are definitely extra steps going on right now to make sure everyone stays happy and healthy!

Out Of Air Vaccum Seal Bags | Get Better Food Preservation With Thicker Bags At A Cheaper Price!

In this video, I am testing Out Of Air Vaccum sealer bags. We use our vaccum sealer a LOT for food preservation, and I'll be honest in that we have been rather disappointed in the quality from several 'big name' brands. When Out Of Air reached out about having me test out some of their bags for a collaboration, I was really excited. Not only are their bags thicker, but they have a better price ...
We Put 150+ Year Old Hand Hewn Logs In Our New Home | Reclaiming Wood From 1800s | Cabin Build Ep 13

Oh my goodness, things are really starting to get exciting. We are FINALLY starting to put to use some of the hand hewn logs from the 1800s civil war era homestead house and using some of the barn beams from the (also 1800s) barn we tore down last summer. Maybe it is starting to make sense now why I'm calling it a 'cabin' even though it's literally our new house, going up in our front yard, so ...
Tearing Down A Civil War Vet's Hand Hewn Log Cabin | 1800s Cabin | Abandoned Homestead Cabin Tour
Переглядів 14 тис.Місяць тому
The biggest secret we've been hanging onto for almost two years now... We get to tear down and salvage wood from an 1800's hand hewn log cabin that was built on an absolutely gorgeous homestead property. This cabin was built by a civil war veteran and then sold to the family who still owns it over 100 years later. While I'm sure people will have lots of feelings about how we salvaged what we co...

The chipboard is finished on the main floor which means it's finally time to start installing the antique barnwood! Come see what we've gotten done so far. While the main bulk of barnwood we will be using throughout the house came from a barn we tore down in 2023 (see video below) the wood we are using on the ceiling actually came from a barn Dan tore down over 15 years ago! 🤯 We got the remnan...

This is probably the last garden tour of the year! Let's take a look around my backyard potager garden. 🥰 Gardening in Wisconsin isn't always easy, and when we have a full homestead worth of critters and other various projects going on at the same time the garden sometimes takes a bit of a back seat. Combine that with a very wet year, and clay soil... it wasn't my best gardening year. Oh not to...

This is exactly why I'm on the carnivore diet, I get most of these benefits just from my diet so far. I'm not even two whole weeks in yet and my skin has almost completely cleared up!! Everyone is complimenting my skin lately!! I'm excited to see what it does for my autoimmune disease and stuff. I love eating steak and oxtails and butter and stuff ❤️
Awesome!!
Do you think there would be any issues if you reused the brine mixture if you pickle again within a month?
You know, I don't actually have a good answer for that. I've done that before with pickles and re-use that brine a couple of times, but I have never tried it with the eggs. If you wanted to give it a test run I would pick a very small jar that only fits a few eggs and try using that brine again, that way if it doesn't work you will not have wasted tons of eggs.
Way to DESTROY history.
Let it fall down and rot in place, or salvage and put into my new house... hmmmmmmmm 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
At which age they started crowing
Some of mine have started as early as 4 weeks. But usually around 3 months, though I have had one take as long as 6 months!
Cool video!
Thank you! Still have lots to learn, but it's fun to keep working on it and getting better over time.
Perhaps not enough oxygen absorption? Chicks do eventually need oxygen inside the egg. Air will penetrate the egg and be absorbed by a network of blood vessels.
It's entirely possible though hard to say.
Looks like great bags! I’m running low lol 😁😊👏👏👏 I enjoyed it
Im loving them so far! Used them for a few more things already since I did this video. 😅 If you need more, take advantage of that discount code they gave me, good till the end of January 2025.
👍👍👍
Fun little side project to share with you guys. 😄
@WildOnesHomestead 😊
Put it in front of a window and leave it be. They don’t like to be fussed with. Water every once in a while. Beautiful plant, though.
I've had it for a few weeks now, and it's doing great. About to bloom, I'm so excited!
What month and day, and where was this started ?
What month and day, and where was this started ?
Month and day don't really matter. You need to start in late winter/early spring when the plants are just setting buds for the best results. You can attempt it when they have leaves already but doesn't seem to work quite as well.
The chipboard that's going to be the finished walls?
No, the rest of the walls will be finished in barnwood like that closet I showed near the beginning. Other than possibly the bathrooms, we haven't completely decided what we are using in those yet.
I certainly hope it's a lot brighter and carrier when it's done cuz it's kind of serial killer looking now looks like a murderer room dark and gloomy in, wow
This is officially my favorite comment, ever. Have you ever been in an OLD log cabin? I'm going to venture to guess you have not. They are dark. Lots of wood and small windows. We are trying to duplicate that look & feeling in our home. We find it cozy. But you also have to realize this is far from done. Lighting has yet to be installed, and walls need to be finished. Furniture and artwork need to go in. I guess stick around and see how creepy you think it is once it's done. 😅
It looks great ! What do you use & how do you treat the wood for beetles ?
Bora care, can find it on Amazon. Mix with water & spray to apply.
@@WildOnesHomestead Thanks !
Of course! 😊
It shows that you spent a lot of planning time on this. I would have made the mistake of trying to square all those pieces up so they would butt up against one another. Not taking into account that they will expand and contract. Are you going to fill in the gaps? If so, what with?
Yes, we will eventually fill the gaps in with chinking, just like you'd see on an actual log cabin, and what they used between the logs on this homestead originally... though I think we will end up using a more modern type. 😅

Yum! 😋
It's so stinking good!!
It’s really looking awesome. The walls remind me of the interior of the Ballerina Farms house. So much warmth and character.
Oh well that's quite the compliment! Her house is beautiful, though I was really sad when she painted a lot of the wood in her kitchen white.
@ maybe with a lot of kids in the kitchen helping it was too hard to clean the wood?? 🤷♀️ The natural wood walls are giving me all the inspirations to do things with our cabin!!
Maybe but I'm thinking it was likely to brighten it up, especially with all the filming they do in there.
recycling is so much fun . Your walls look so inviting and cozy . Lots of work , will last another 100 yrs. If walls could talk , they would thank you. Amazing.
Thank you. It's really exciting to be giving these old logs (& boards & beams) a new life!
That's looking really good!
Thank you!! We are so excited about how it is all coming together. It's still such a long way to go, but it will be absolutely worth it!

Same happened to me...6 looked like to have great development but only 2 hatched
It is so sad when it happens, and also very frustrating to have no real reason as to why.
@WildOnesHomestead and get this...one unfortunately was unalived by pecking by the broody hen I sneaked it under. Happened this morning, about an hour ago. She'd unalived it when I went for my doctor's appointment. and they both had just hatched last night, luckily one managed to get away. I feel unforgiving of myself and also this broody mother, I will re-home her. The remaining chick is inside a brooder. I am quite upset with the entire development
@lizxu322 Ohhh, no! What time of day did you attempt it, and how long has she been broody? Unfortunately, sometimes it happens. 😢 One time, days into raising them, I had a hen randomly reject and do that to 2 brown chicks in her batch. The rest were black, and she left them be and raised them perfectly. Strangest thing ever.
@@WildOnesHomestead early morning...she actually has been broody for 30 days and i ordered fertile eggs online for her that arrived 7-9 days after she started becoming broody, so she remained broody for the entire 21 days and the extra days. I should have known something was up when she kept letting eggs fall away from her and go cold so in the end I hatched them inside an incubator. Basically she was committed for 30 days straight and only went off the nest once per day to eat like she was supposed to, but also had red flags like letting eggs roll away so they went cold, I thought I could leave the chicks with her for 1 hour I was wrong. I'm giving her away later today along with her sister because they both look too similar and I have a bad taste in my mouth when I look at them now :( I also am thinking of rehoming the chick to someone with other chicks so that it can have important interactions with other chicks. He or she is alone by itself 😭
What a loss of history! I am saddened. Where in wisconsin is this? The home we grew up has been awhile. But momma sold it and moved to California. Such a loss!
I see this as saving bits of history. This house was in terrible condition, and within a few more years likely nothing in it would have been salvageable.
They didn't give you land during the war between the states,,,,that is rev,,,read history 😮😢
I'm just sharing what was told to us. The story has been passed down several generations before we ever heard it, and who are we to question the family story. 🤷🏼♀️
Also, I'm gonna suggest you google The Homestead Act of 1862. Can find some good info on the nps.gov website. 🙃
@WildOnesHomestead I'm just saying someone got it mixed up some were,,,
Yes and no, it's absolutely a post civil war house, built by a civil war veteran. I'd guess he obtained the land via the homestead act, which gave preference to veterans.
@WildOnesHomestead depends on the side u were on he could have bought it with his pension, if he was union,,,,🤔
It is too bad you didn't metal detect prior to tear down at a place that old. The coins, buttons etc.
I'm sure there's lots of cool stuff around the building still. The property owners just wanted us to get the building down, so that's what we worried about.
There is a lot of good material in that old house worth salvaging. Doors, lots of joists and beams. My dad bought an old victorian style house back in 1980 to tear down. Big 2 story house with 3 chimneys. He didnt waste anything. Had a lot of heart pine. Built our house with most of it. Reused chimney brick, interior doors and everything. What he couldnt reuse for constructing the house he made craft projects out of and the small leftovers were turned into fireplace kindling!
It actually looks in a lot better shape on video than it was in person. A lot of rot, and many of the wood had extensive bug damage to the point it they would turn into dust upon moving. We salvaged quite a bit (as seen at the end of the video), and we are now having fun putting it to use and getting the most out of what we brought home... after some cleanup and spraying for bugs! 🫠
So are you supposed to refrigerate the tallow balm? I can’t get this answer anywhere
I do not for the ones I'm using just as a balm. I keep them on my bathroom counter to use as a daily lotion/balm. I do, however, refrigerate the tallow I want to use for cooking once I've opened them.
@ thanks so much! 🙏🏻
@ thanks! 🙏🏻
Pity that you tore it down rather than restore it, given its history. Just really sad.
I totally get it, but the land owners wanted it down and combine that with how bad of shape most of it was in... that was really the only answer. Luckily, we did manage to salvage everything that we could, and we will be giving those pieces a fresh start in our new home. 🥰
Metal detectors 😮😮
Ohhhhh ya. We've had a LOT of nail pulling to do once we got the logs home.
The building is so cool, but they are tearing it down. Make that make sense
Tear down and salvage to save what can be saved for reuse... Or leave to let it continue to degrade and rot where it sits. Makes sense to me. 😉
Wow good luck !
Thank you!
@@WildOnesHomestead had to sub to follow your progress thanks for sharing!
@MikeL-vu7jo awesome thank you so much! I'll take all and any consecutive criticism, trying to make something of this dang Y.T. channel. 😅
Good example of how not to take apart a log home for use later!
If you wanted to put it back together as it was... definitely not. But that's not what we are doing for multiple reasons. 1. A LOT of these logs were trashed. Turned to dust when pulled down, even taking them down gently, they would not have been useable. 2. We knew a lot were far beyond use before we started, and we had a game plan to get to the good ones as quickly and efficiently as possible. 3. Well, you'll have to check back in later to see how we are using them. 😉
that is a really cool cabin
It really was! I tried to tell Dan it was move in ready and that we should just take the whole thing in one piece. 😆
Beautiful
Thank you. We are really excited to see it all slowly coming together. 🥰

I see a lot of lumber and doors unless it's rotten I would be taking almost everything it could made into new old stock
A lot of it was rotten. It actually looks a lot better on the video than it really was. Many of the logs crumbled into dust once moved... that being said, we did manage to save a nice amount from it and are very excited to put that to use!
Recently saw salvaged doors, windows and other materials from a circa 1890s home sold at auction… turned a reasonable return, certainly was worth the effort. What happened to the pile you left for the land owner?
@chrisdreyer1406 We took what was useable. I definitely wish we had found the property 5-10 years earlier. A lot more would have been salvageable. I'm not sure what the land owner has planned for the pile, if they are going to burn it at some point, or just leave it to continue to break down.
what time of year are you doing this , cutting the plants,
Early spring when they just have buds and not leaves. Though they are very hardy, I've heard of people trimming them other times of year and just sticking them in the dirt directly with some success.
Want to see the video of the barn we tore down last year? Check that out here -> ua-cam.com/video/r-9PupfKrPg/v-deo.html
Your rent check bounced, Rocky! Time to go!
🤣🤣🤣 Seriously! We could NOT believe they were in there that whole time and waited so long to vacate. Another ran off from the other side and tried to crawl into the skid steer with Dan. Fattest raccoons we've ever seen. 😆
@WildOnesHomestead 😃😃
Very cool Michelle!
Thank you! It was fun and we are very excited to use lots of the wood!
👍👍👍
Do you really HAVE to "seal" all that ceiling? Any chance it's exterior Lumber?
We need to just to keep it from ending up discolored again over time. Also once we get it sealed it smooths it out a little bit and makes it easier to wipe down for dust and such!
@WildOnesHomestead I'm old so I would have to find an easier way like maybe a sealant in a garden sprayer. My arms and neck would never hold up to brushing it on. 😔😔
Dan did his office years ago with a sprayer, and it was such a mess he said never again! LOL
@@WildOnesHomestead 😊
Good info. Thanks
