Will I still be able to catch up? A💡: You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons. Seki Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully instruct you on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the past lessons so you can watch what every other student has learned. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Seki Sensei will be happy to give you feedback. Q❓: What is the right length of the Iaito (zinc alloy training katana) I should use? A💡: Please purchase an Iaitō at least two blocks longer than the standard length. The standard length for Seki Sensei is about 177cm, so he should use a 2.45 Shaku long katana. However, he uses a 2.6 Shaku-long katana that is supposed to be used by someone 190cm tall. If the katana is too short, it becomes too easy to draw, which is not good for training. Q❓: Can I join even if I belong to a different Ryuha style? A💡: Yes, it’s not a problem at all. The Seki Sensei himself has trained in more than five styles and various other weapons. If you don’t want others to know that you are participating, you can join the online lessons with your camera off. You should draw from a hat. Every draw is a different advantage or handicap, or both. Nobody knows what the next matchup is going to be, and you have to adapt every round, both to best use your advantage or capitalize upon a disadvantage, or to best mitigate your disadvantages and overcome an opponent's advantage. And more strange conditions. Paint a stripe on the floor, stepping anywhere else is a loss. They get three attempts to strike, if they fail to hit in three, it's a loss. Fighting handcuffed. Fighting without using their dominant hand. Fighting with a rope tied between their waist, so they can't open the distance. Really challenge the conditions they're used to by introducing something they HAVEN'T trained themselves to deal with.
I would like to present my own opinion about reverse grip as well. The reverse grip is implemented here to place Seiki Sensei at a disadvantage, and he does well in spite of it, not because of it. If anything, being forced to use reverse grip highlights his skills as an individual rather than showing how viable reverse grip can be.
That point Kurosawa-sensei scored was brilliant! I never would've expected him to suddenly release his right hand to extend his reach. To do that against a master swordsman like Seki-sensei has gotta be a huge morale-booster. Still, Seki-sensei was fighting with a reverse-grip handicap!
IMHO, nothing too surprising about someone in jodan stance using a one handed attack. At least in kendo, one handed attacks to head and wrist are considered the default things for jodan users to use. To the point where it's pretty rare to see them using anything else. Still, even with just those two attacks, jodan players can make for pretty tough opponents.
While watching Tsukada-san vs Seki Sensei, I was thinking about range. Reverse grip shortens your range, therefore for Seki Sensei's opponent it is more beneficial to use one hand to have the range privilege. And that exactly what let Kurosawa-san land a hit!
oh my god, you don't know how happy you made me with this video, for more than a decade I searched the internet looking for a video like this, master swordsmen fighting ''for real'', using their techniques in a fight, the katana means a lot to me, I've been studying and researching this sword since I was 18 years old, it's 3:23 in the morning and I'm laughing with happiness and applauding, you made me very happy, gentlemen, thank you.
That Seki Sensei's loss was on a one-handed swing to extend the range speaks to the truth of fighting in your range. It was a well placed swing when the range was just right.
I am also a Star Wars fan, and in this episode find that Rosario Dawson should have been trained by Seki Sensei for 6 months before she shot Ahsoka series.
I respect the skill here, but I think the attackers are very timid, and when they did attack often over-committed. Perhaps the timidity is from too much reverence for the teacher? With two hands on the handle (and right side up) you have the luxury of both agility and reach. Being timid makes the reach inconsequential. Over-committing evaporates your agility advantage. But again, no disrespect - there is clearly great skill! That grab into wrist lock was absolutely gorgeous. I also see and respect the control to both land the grab but not injure, we have that same hand position in chin na and it has an absurd amount of torque.
So awesome! I loved this so much. What a great video. Always wanted to see what reversed grip would look like, when performed by a truly skilled warrior.
it doesnt. Here it's used by a genuine kobudo master who tested his skills in many tournaments and is genuinely good in jujutsu/taijutsu. Aside Leo Tamaki and people who used aikido as a supplementary martial art to combat sports- I've yet to see a pure aikidoka that can pull off something like that in sparring.
Aikido developed partly out of earlier grappling martial arts like traditional Japanese jui-jitsu, which was used by samurai in close-combat situations.
I think one thing missing is how vicious the master is. The man aint holding much back and hitting relatively hard. Must have been exciting to spar for both sides. And he's fast af!
I would love to see Seki-sensei use a metallic training sword and perhaps use it in sparring (with protection of course) It's hard to get a feel of the weight distribution of the sword with a shinai I get the feeling those wrist movements he did would break someone's wrist if they tried it with a metallic sword But maybe not Seki-sensei's wrist because of how well trained he is
This is truly very impressive and its always nice to see Seki Sensei taking a loss as a huge win. He lost once and took it as a learning opportunity and didn't brag about anything. He obviously knows (and so do we) what the downsides of the reverse grip is and he managed to adapt somewhat perfectly. I am very curious how other sword youtubers will react to this video. Also just to share to everyone, based on my observation, Seki Sensei is using the fukuro shinai more as a stick rather than a sword so there's bound to be some caveats here and there. But still, impressive feat by Sensei. Absolutely magnificent.
As someone who trains HEMA Seki sensei is definitely a master swordsman, but I do wonder about his other sensei’s, I thought they would somewhat match his skill and at least give him a challenge. That being said, Kurosawa was very good, and props to him for stopping that thrust in round 4.
challenge ideas 1.katana or wakizashi vs spear or naginata 2.tanto vs(duel) katana 3.reverse grip only vs dual katana 4.katana vs sword/shield besides maybe the tanto usage, i think seki sensei should win against all these challenges based on skill i've seen, but it would be interesting
That was so much fun to watch! As a western fencer myself, I couldn't help criticize it from my own standpoint. It appears that Tsukada Sensei doesn't fully commit to his attacks. He did excellent feits but didn't follow through, and a few times penetrated an opening but just didn't quite go all the way. Would I be right in assuming Kurasawa Sensei practices Kendo, too? His attacks had 100% commitment and his timing was very tight, forcing Seki Senei to close and stick. Would you see it that way?
Seki Sensei is terrifying, I don't know if I see this the correct way, but he holds the reverse grip behind him to hide his reach and because the reverse grip has a wonky range with his technique, the others can't gauge his distance, and combining that with his 'decoy' made it a great counter play strategy. The second person to spar him is also insanely good, if you leave your hand so low on the handle, you basically leave a massive lever for the opponent to hit and the katana has no pommel so it may even wrench out of his hand if hit(feel free to correct me on that idk about katana), so I would not have even thought about doing this, but the range let him cut Seki Sensei. There is also some precedent for what he did in HEMA, as a longsword user would slide the handle to the pommel to thrust farther, but it leaves you super exposed if done wrong. Tho I would like to see how Seki Sensei would react to thrusting when doing reverse grip as holding the katana behind him is reactive as far as I see and thrusts as some of the hardest attacks to predict. So theoretically someone could snipe his hand with a thrust but then again, given what he showed here, he would probably ruin that plan as well
I'd love to see what Seki Sensei would do with a Bat'leth! (Just in case: a Bat'leth is a weapon used by a fictional warrior race called Klingons in Star Trek). Skallagrim and Sellsword Arts have videos showing them in use.
Love the series. Though for the more layman watchers like me it might be better to include a Tsukata vs Kurosawa sensei in this arrangement to show how bad the hadicap is between more equally skilled opponents, since Seki sensei make to look like barely an inconvenience.
I would like to see the same video from those two where they wear protective gear so the student doesn't have to cut his attacks and speed sort. Also the wooden weapon is lighter than a steel katana, which is heavy for it's size, holding it reverse would make it unwieldy AF, unlike the one used in the video which seems pretty nimble even in reverse grip
It's a niche/gambit kind of approach. Hide the length of your sword, do something unconventional quickly enough that your opponent struggles to counter
4:04 I'm curious why this is a draw? If those were real swords then Seki Sensei would be the only one hit by a blade, and it didn't look like he could have landed a strong enough hit with the handle to do more than push his opponent back.
Kurosawa sensei has good reaction time and good aggression. Tsukada Sensei should take notes and fight less passively. The more passive you are in a fight the easier it is for your opponent to control the entire fight. The more passive you are in a fight the less commited you are to moves (attacks and defense) which makes them slower and easier to read/answer. At the end of the day you're simulating a fight to the death, so give your best effort. Dont mistake it with being reckless. It's all about staying sharp and focused, like a storm ready to burst from your body.
I am a little confused as to how round 4 against Tsukada Sensei ended as a draw. Seki Sensei was pushing Tsukada at arms reach with his hilt, while Tsukada had his sord arm free and pointed at his belly.
Forgive me, but I’d love to watch a video reacting to some of the techniques and fights in the anime shigurui. I know it might be a. Bit gory for some but I’d really like to know how much realism that show holds according to a true master. Thank you for this video and all the others. You are great teachers
Please consider the following suggestions for possible future challenges -seki sensei only uses muto dori -seki sensei uses a sword agains a spear -seki sensei uses chain ball
Reverse grip for the entirety of a duel is definitely worse than using your sword normally, but it is not impossible to score a win with it if you're as skilled as Seki Sensei.
For the next edition of this series, may suggest Seki sensei does muto dori, since he already mentioned in a past video about muto dori that if the opponent keeps the sword in front it would be interesting to see how seki sensei baits them into swining.
I think an interesting challenge would be unarmed vs katana. Not only would Seki-sensei have to disarm his opponent, but then deliver a strike. I know a lot of katas prepare for that, but it's one thing to rehearse a kata, and another to do it in free sparring 🤔
True. We've seen how well he adapts to the non-traditional weapons he's been requested to give his take on. With a chopstick, it'll likely be treated like a hidden dagger or kubotan.
Omoshiroi 👍🏼 OMEDETOU 💯 🤔2 hands on katana, make THE range shorter!and THE body moves slower,📉 1 hand, increase THE reach! And THE velocity ,and mobility!📈 at least,on This vídeo 🕵🏻♂️! And Very FUN! 🤩👏🏻 Domo arigatoogozaimasu!🙂↕️
Please Seki sensei you need to silence Sellsword Arts as they keep saying reverse grip is garbage and it doesn't work when you and I both know it works well as an offence and defence. Thanks sensei. ❤

So many beautiful ideas ❤❤❤❤
Sell sword arts has been real quiet now

That's whta I thought as well haha
I mean the reason they did this video at all is because fighting with reverse grip is explicitly harder than with standard grip sooo
@@raicattivo they literally had to nerf him xD
Sellswords point still stands, that exceptional swordsmen can fight with reverse grip doesn't mean that they would do it.

What a great video.

Seki sensei’s learners mindset is such a great way to take it
Tsukada Sensei looks more assertive now, I'm loving it ❤
If he commits to a follow-up move / block after each attack, he'd be pretty damn good.👍🏻
So much respect for Seki Sensei's humility and love of learning!
Ah, aikido suddenly becomes very practical
That was an amazing kotegaeshi at 8:03 lol
Aikido can be very practical if it's combined with regular sparring and used by a master. A sword for extra persuasiveness also helps.
Because Aikido has its roots in Kenjutsu
it doesnt. Here it's used by a genuine kobudo master who tested his skills in many tournaments and is genuinely good in jujutsu/taijutsu. He can't keep getting away with it. Blindfolded, 2 arms behind his back, balancing on a pole and katana in his mouth.
sword? you must mean a Tanto 😂😂
I think one thing missing is how vicious the master is. The man aint holding much back and hitting relatively hard. Must have been exciting to spar for both sides. And he's fast af!
You should do a challenge where Seki Sensei has to stay within a very small circle during the whole match!
This!
Serioulsy love the variety in styles with tsukada sensei and kurosawa sensei
The Aikido nerds are gonna be hyped about that kote gaeshi! 😂
Thanks! this is really so much fun to watch and learn from!
I would think that a master's greatest achievement is when a student wins against them.
I would love to see Seki-sensei use a metallic training sword and perhaps use it in sparring (with protection of course)
It's hard to get a feel of the weight distribution of the sword with a shinai
I get the feeling those wrist movements he did would break someone's wrist if they tried it with a metallic sword
But maybe not Seki-sensei's wrist because of how well trained he is
Whole internet: "reverse grip is useless." Seki Sensei:"Hold my tea."
Reverse grip IS useless. Seki Sensei is HIM, so it doesnt matter.

The number of pppl Ive met who hate reverse grip style ;p; There are applicaitons in HEMA and HAMA as well that are less well known
This is interesting, though I would be curious to see if the students are genuinely trying to hit Seki Sensei here 🤔
Kurosawa sensei has good reaction time and good aggression.
It's all about staying sharp and focused, like a storm ready to burst from your body.
i guess we can imagine how zatoichi would fight from this too
武道の世界には色々な人が逆手は無理だと言われた。でもね、今回は関先生を見せられた。
haven't seen you guys in my feed for months!!
thought you stopped uploading, but youtube is being youtube -_-
sparring ini bikin jadi semangat ingin latihan kembali setelah 4 tahun vakum.
Character: samurai who uses reverse grip to make it more fair for his opponents.
I am a little confused as to how round 4 against Tsukada Sensei ended as a draw. Seki Sensei was pushing Tsukada at arms reach with his hilt, while Tsukada had his sord arm free and pointed at his belly.
@letsasksekisensei you guys should see how seki sensei would use a Messer from 15th century Germany
Forgive me, but I’d love to watch a video reacting to some of the techniques and fights in the anime shigurui. I know it might be a. Bit gory for some but I’d really like to know how much realism that show holds according to a true master. Thank you for this video and all the others. You are great teachers
Please consider the following suggestions for possible future challenges
-seki sensei only uses muto dori
-seki sensei uses a sword agains a spear
-seki sensei uses chain ball
Reverse grip for the entirety of a duel is definitely worse than using your sword normally, but it is not impossible to score a win with it if you're as skilled as Seki Sensei.
Request for tanto techniques vs muto dori, please. Basically, a knife protection lesson from Seki Sensei
How about two against Seki Sensei and he chooses the weapons? 🤔
👏
I want to see how Seki Sensei would fight with 3 sword style
I wonder what his opinion on the battleth would be
Next video
Let's Jump Seki-sensei
Need to start randomizing the handicaps
I have a recommendation for your reaction videos
Ghost of tsushima
And soon it's sort of sequel
Ghost of youtei
this experimental fight is fun hahahaha,
also I'm waiting for Zweihander hahahahah
He wields the Zweihander? That would be interesting.
he's incredibly skilled
Let’s ask Seki Sensei what would you do if your in 2 vs 1 situation and you have only one katana?
kendo without ego
🤍
Only tanto next time?
Only a Tanto against Katana and Jo would be very interesting.
Two on one lol
For the next edition of this series, may suggest Seki sensei does muto dori, since he already mentioned in a past video about muto dori that if the opponent keeps the sword in front it would be interesting to see how seki sensei baits them into swining.
I think an interesting challenge would be unarmed vs katana. Not only would Seki-sensei have to disarm his opponent, but then deliver a strike. I know a lot of katas prepare for that, but it's one thing to rehearse a kata, and another to do it in free sparring 🤔
why unlisted?
I wanna see how Seki-sensei would handle a scimitar or kilij.
I would to see how the sensei does unarmed against swords
❤
Honestly, seki sensei would probably still be a force to recon with if he could only use a single chopstick wielded in reverse grip :P
True. We've seen how well he adapts to the non-traditional weapons he's been requested to give his take on. With a chopstick, it'll likely be treated like a hidden dagger or kubotan.
make seki spar with the sikkel!
Sickle? A Western sickle, or the Japanese version?
I'd love to see how Seki Sensei would use a Lightsaber.
At this rate we will see Seki Sensei using a Tanto against a Naginata very soon 😂😂😂😂
Omoshiroi 👍🏼
OMEDETOU 💯
🤔2 hands on katana, make THE range shorter!and THE body moves slower,📉
1 hand, increase THE reach! And THE velocity ,and mobility!📈
at least,on This vídeo 🕵🏻♂️!
And Very FUN!
🤩👏🏻
Domo arigatoogozaimasu!🙂↕️
Sensei could be Zatoichi
uuuuh the hema comunity is not going to be happy about this 🤣
hema community here- I’ve seen a guy glue two swords together and use it like a halberd.
We all saw him, he's not to be taken seriously . @@Wub-rv9xx
*angry sell sword arts noises
Please Seki sensei you need to silence Sellsword Arts as they keep saying reverse grip is garbage and it doesn't work when you and I both know it works well as an offence and defence. Thanks sensei. ❤
Thank you Sensi Seki for responding this means everything to me as this needs to be corrected immediately as it's mis information.
