Will I still be able to catch up? A💡: You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons. Seki Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully instruct you on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the past lessons so you can watch what every other student has learned. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Seki Sensei will be happy to give you feedback. Q❓: What is the right length of the Iaito (zinc alloy training katana) I should use? A💡: Please purchase an Iaitō at least two blocks longer than the standard length. The standard length for Seki Sensei is about 177cm, so he should use a 2.45 Shaku long katana. However, he uses a 2.6 Shaku-long katana that is supposed to be used by someone 190cm tall. If the katana is too short, it becomes too easy to draw, which is not good for training. Q❓: Can I join even if I belong to a different Ryuha style? A💡: Yes, it’s not a problem at all. The Seki Sensei himself has trained in more than five styles and various other weapons. If you don’t want others to know that you are participating, you can join the online lessons with your camera off. I think we all agree that Seki Sensei is a superb martial artist...but I can't help but also she just how skilled his other instructors are even though he is beating them....I imagine they must be very good at fighting as well
Seki Sensei says he was just lucky, but in e-sports (or gaming in general) there's this (semi-joking) saying: "Skill is when luck becomes a habit." Sure, there may be some degree of luck involved, but if you have the skills, you can manipulate the odds of certain random-seeming (or not fully controllable) events in your favor in various ways.
similar in boxing (although some credit the manga Hajime no Ippo for coining the saying) is "there are no lucky punches". Like your hand doesnt magically on its own appear on the opponent's weak point in case of a "lucky punch", throwing it was a conscious decision, or a trained reaction. I hate when people say "he lost but it was to a lucky punch", such a loser talk excuse.
I like how the closest either sensei came to a victory was a single draw. Show just how much of a master Seki-Sensei himself is but those under him are no slouches either. Really puts into perspective how much anime and movies oversell how a real sword fight would actually look. I remember hearing somewhere, probably in another Seki-Sensei video actually, that in some traditions, students are first taught with large weapons like polearms and spears to get used to the idea of using long weapons and then are gradually brought down in size to regular swords, short swords, daggers/knives and then finally completely unarmed. That way you're always prepared for whatever weapons you find yourself using or fighting against, because you've gotten used to the different lengths of different weapons and know how to combat them while at disadvantage
If I am not wrong this is how FMA teaches martial arts, more specifically Kali, if this is true and I can find a source, I'll send it, but it is interesting how martial arts develop similar styles of combat training to acclimate fighters
I noticed Seki Sensei used the "winding" techniques introduced in the previous videos. Very neat to see him build on earlier content. He is truly a great teacher.
This is a wonder to see for my practice. I study Fiore, Godinho, and Destreza mainly, and it is lovely to see how similar Seki-sensei's footwork and positions mirror Destreza in these bouts. Destreza is a Spanish style of swordsmanship that is more defensive and ideal for 1-vs-1 as it uses circular footwork and sword work instead of linear. It was characterised by use of shorter swords, upright posture, and distance management. If you watch a Destreza fight with rapiers you will find them circling and constantly changing line of attack, especially when against longer rapiers. I am not at all suggesting Seki-sensei does Destreza or is even aware of it, nor that he copied it or something. But rather, it is really fun to see how his approach resembles it to my eye, while in previous videos his approach has been a bit different.
Destreza student here, I’ve always noticed what you mention, and not in Seki Sensei style only, but in aikido too - circles, may-ai, preference for “natural” rather than “violent “, defensive movements and life-preservation…

This is definitely a video I've been looking forward to seeing. Especially the dual katana content. Thank you so much for your hard work putting this video out
My son made a spear of bamboo today while we were working. We have practice tomahawks that we train with. I got the tomahawk and we fought, spear against single and dual tomahawks. Then we come in and watch this masterful display of utilizing weapon length. I had told him to get inside the spear wielder's reach and the tomahawk can be superior. I don't know what I'm doing, comparatively, and it was beautiful to watch; he puts it into practical application more efficiently than I can verbalize it.
This! This is my goal as a trainee... to understand the flow of a fight so innately and be able to adapt your training in the moment. It's beautiful to watch! Seki Sensei will have to be on his death bed before I would ever beat him but one can dream 🤪

He felt the presure and lost his compusture, and in that position he maybe could made a cut to Seki Senseis arm, but still get stabed in the chest or the troaht, that is why experience and cold mind is needed in a duel.
It was all the way until just now, that i actually SAW Seki Sensei written out. i've only really been listening and watching the videos without reading, so it was until this very moment that i thought you've been saying Sig Sensei this entire time. Really does make no sense in retrospect
I feel like having them doing Nito with two Daito is only on the surface an advantage, but for me it rather looks like a great disadvantage. Firstly I don't know any Ryuha that seriously practices Nito with two Daito, so it looks like Seki senseis Students also never done that before. The sword in their left hand is more of a hindrance and they are unable to use it fully with their left hand. Basically Seki Sensei has only to look out for an opening and can force them into Jujutsu, grabbing them and using the Wakizashi freely. I feel like it would have been more of a challenge for Seki Sensei would both engage him with one Daito alone.
The way two swords is usually done is with a wakizashi in the dominant hand instead of a daito. In HEMA it's the other way round, with the parrying dagger in the offhand.
what if the person with the longer weapon just put his 2 katanas straight out and started stabbing and ran straight at the sensei? I’m wondering what to do with an enemy who runs at you with his sword extended along its entire length and the tip of the sword is constantly aimed at you?
This is in no way meant to be a slight to Seki Sensei's immense skill and experience, but it certainly doesn't help Tsukada Sensei and Kurosawa Sensei out that Seki Sensei is also a bigger guy than either of them. He's both taller and stronger which brings an advantage when trying for physical inside fighting like he was doing. As I said, this doesn't reflect in any way on his skill. I'm certain that against a larger opponent he'd still have a number of ways to win with the same weapons as in this video.
With all due respect, it doesn't look like dual katanas are an advantage to anyone here. I just watched all of them seem to forget they had the second on when their opponent put them on the back foot and was in range of the second one.
So i gotta ask though i have some ideas. Why Seki Sensei? As i understan Seki typically means "one part of a pair" OR "an impasse at Go" Im leaning towards the second meaning as Sensei is an honorific for "teacher/instructor" So is the intent then to mean "a teacher of the impasse of a martial art?"
I imagine what it would have looked like, had you had protection on. I mean, every time I saw Seki Sensei charging in with a wakizashi against two long blades pointed at him, I almost immediatevly envisioned him stabbed in the face, chest, and stomach. Or pummelled in the head, when upclose. That's what would have happened to me anyways. But, at the same time, I realize it would have been largely unsafe to do with Fukuro-shinai at full speed.

Seki sensei is like a summer storm. Warm and nice and suddenly its menacing and crashes down on you before you know it
Making Seki-sensei fighting at disadvantage just makes Sensei stronger in the future
This seems like a great way for people with long arms to train for when they encounter someone taller than they are.

It's fascinating how not having protective gear makes people far more deliberate about their approach.
I love how Seki Sensei just has fun, its almost like a form of play to get rid of the tension even though its sparring
A great teacher he truly is.
It is Fun, They dont fight to win, they fight to learn. So, you cant try things, make mistakes and have a great time.

Props to Tsukada-sensei. He sustained a lot of cuts to the leg and arm but still managed to keep his defensive footwork!
I just love how they are having fun during sparing.
Love the sparring videos! This is the perfect example that you as the swordsman create the range, not the weapon.
"Yeah good luck with that" was my immediate thoughts after seeing the title. :D
What a fun video! I was laughing too when Seki Sensei feinted his nitō attacks in the first round with Tsukada san!
Seki-sensei's style while wielding the wakizashi reminds me a lot of polish sabre sparring videos I've seen in the past, that's honestly so cool
Seki sensei's footwork and movement are so good!
Please do more sparring video!
they are all obviously very skilled, and Seki Sensei was in command of the situation in every bout. Very impressive.
This looks like it was SO much fun. SUPER cool video!! 😁

This particular Seki sensei video is the best youtube vid ive seen 2024.. Sensei is sword god!
Seki sensei is light on his feet!!
Great to see Seki Sensei still posting very educational videos about Japanese Martial arts and great to see Shogo of Let's asked Shogo.❤

Seki Sensei flows better than opponents flow. Flow from knowledge & then experience.
Which arts cover tantojutsu and the nodachi? I just subscribed and joined the patron and look forward to the many videos! Thank you.
Kurosawa-Sensei wearing the mask makes me think about how some Samurai fought wearing an ornate half mask, some looking like demon maws.
The soft laughter coming from Seki Sensei as he approaches with 2 katanas is terrifying. You know he’s having fun.
My tactic would have been using one Katana for cutting and the other one for parrying and suprise thrusting since my dominant hand is much stronger.
This was a fantastic video:) I'd love to watch more sparring (and discussion)with the soft shinai in the future.
Thanks for the new video !! 😊
Thank you very much for watching it!
Surviving a fight, short sword vs long sword ,is not a trivial task
I'd be interested in seeing how a spear was used, seeing as that was what the most common weapon at the battlefield, if I got my history right.

It's beautiful to watch! Seki Sensei will have to be on his death bed before I would ever beat him but one can dream 🤪
Very interesting, thanks :)
I love the absolute fear of God his opponents have lol
Seki Sensei was more defensive with the Wakizashi , he waited for his opponent to attack and make a mistake . The other two were more aggressive , but you have a disadvantage with a shorter blade .
The only possible way to win in this kind of fight is to throw the wakizashi at opponent. And hope it sticks.
Awesome to watch
🙏 🙇 Thank you very much!
Exelent !!! 😅
3:13 Tsukada could easily cut Seki Sensei with his right hand, wouldnt be a very strong cut but could spill his guts
With free sparring & real fights, you can only judge what happened, not what could have. Sub-optimal move become the right move as long as it works.
excellent, thanks

Where i can Buy this swords?
Nito is absolutely not an advantage if you aren’t very comfortable with them
If I recall right Musashi thought that two weapons in duel does not give any real advantage, but is viable on battlefield.
@@vksasdgaming9472 it can, you just had better be comfortable with using them
3:23 Why didn't Tsukada Sensei use the katana in his right hand
to cut Seki Sensei's left shoulder?
He felt the presure and lost his compusture, and in that position he maybe could made a cut to Seki Senseis arm, but still get stabed in the chest or the troaht, that is why experience and cold mind is needed in a duel.
Free parry and strikes are free are the way forward 🙌 🙏 ✨
Amazing OSU
That title is crazy💀💀
i like this one hand style, there is one hand style with katana too?
Would not a katana and wakizashi be the most appropriate challenge?
very nice !!
Thanks for watching!
I hope you guys will have the opportunity to put on Hema gear and spar with steel trainers
❤
Seki sensei has got that aura
But of course there's a guy named Kurosawa learning the samurai arts... 🤣
It was all the way until just now, that i actually SAW Seki Sensei written out. i've only really been listening and watching the videos without reading, so it was until this very moment that i thought you've been saying Sig Sensei this entire time. Really does make no sense in retrospect
Metal fans vs long jo next
Can we get a video on footwork
what if the person with the longer weapon just put his 2 katanas straight out and started stabbing and ran straight at the sensei? I’m wondering what to do with an enemy who runs at you with his sword extended along its entire length and the tip of the sword is constantly aimed at you?
❤👍🏻🙇♂️🤘👋
do katana vs bo please
Was Miyamoto Musashi the first practioner of the nitoryu?
No, he wasn’t
seki sensei is really agile despite his age
This is in no way meant to be a slight to Seki Sensei's immense skill and experience, but it certainly doesn't help Tsukada Sensei and Kurosawa Sensei out that Seki Sensei is also a bigger guy than either of them. He's both taller and stronger which brings an advantage when trying for physical inside fighting like he was doing.
As I said, this doesn't reflect in any way on his skill. I'm certain that against a larger opponent he'd still have a number of ways to win with the same weapons as in this video.
🤓
how you guys use the wakizashi reminds me of escrima from the philippines
Kurosawa/Tsukada Sensei were even allowed to attack more than one time?
Using two katanas is clumsy.
Respectful, I would say they were going too easy on Seki sensei (when he only had the Wakizashi).
Still a fun and interesting video.
With all due respect, it doesn't look like dual katanas are an advantage to anyone here. I just watched all of them seem to forget they had the second on when their opponent put them on the back foot and was in range of the second one.
So i gotta ask though i have some ideas. Why Seki Sensei?
As i understan Seki typically means "one part of a pair" OR "an impasse at Go"
Im leaning towards the second meaning as Sensei is an honorific for "teacher/instructor"
So is the intent then to mean "a teacher of the impasse of a martial art?"
Seki-sensei thrusts with fukuroshinai very often, as in the video. It's just that he can found the perfect space for him to safely charging in.
