🧐Frequently Asked Questions About Our Online Lessons:
Q❓: I have no experience with katana. Will I still be able to catch up?
A💡: You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons.
Seki Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully instruct you on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the past lessons so you can watch what every other student has learned. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Seki Sensei will be happy to give you feedback.
Q❓: What is the right length of the Iaito (zinc alloy training katana) I should use?
A💡: Please purchase an Iaitō at least two blocks longer than the standard length.
The standard length for Seki Sensei is about 177cm, so he should use a 2.45 Shaku long katana. However, he uses a 2.6 Shaku-long katana that is supposed to be used by someone 190cm tall. If the katana is too short, it becomes too easy to draw, which is not good for training.
Q❓: Can I join even if I belong to a different Ryuha style?
A💡: Yes, it’s not a problem at all.
The Seki Sensei himself has trained in more than five styles and various other weapons. If you don’t want others to know that you are participating, you can join the online lessons with your camera off. To have the Sensei check your progress, you can send us a video of you practicing.

That would be so cool.
fun fact: this exact same technique is a similar concept to how the famous "1 inch punch" popularized by bruce lee is able to generate so much power from such a short distance. The main idea is that you are splitting and combining vectors of force at will, splitting your opponents vectors of tension force while focusing those vectors against your opponent. In other words, when you give two separate directions to your opponent, they will contradict themselves. The use of a center line is instrumental in understanding the orientation of a body in motion and where it will go, thus you can easily picture this film of trajectory and fast forward to arrive there prior to your opponent, delivering an intercepting strike which finds little physical resistance to successfully landing. Masters of this technique find crushing knockouts with their strikes and decisive blows as they are continuously opening and pulling their opponents into their most full body strikes
Very interesting, the florentine fencing master Marco Docciolini (published 1601) is utilizing a similar voiding footwork as the foundation of his fencing system. Heavily simplified, when performing an action the leading foot is to be placed a foots width next to the centre line, on the opposite site where the opponents sword is parried, retreating afterwards is performed along the new line.
There is very similar footwork and a lot more similarly clever footwork in various European martial arts, amont them a number of Sicilian knife fighting styles.
The human body is the same no matter what country you're from. So almost all martial arts eventually come to similar conclusions. Concepts like the centerline and minimal dodging are universal.
Can't remember the movie, but I remember an old Samurai movie (black and white), where 2 samurai dueled with each other with boken. It appeared that they crossed swords on each other's neck at the same time. The younger man exclaimed "Ah! a draw!" and the older Samurai said, "No. You lost." The younger samurai was incencsed and demanded a rematch with Katana. They performed the same attacks, but the young man was sliced and the older man was un-harmed. I think this concept was being displayed there, though I didn't understand, nor do I remember, the Japenese terminology the older man used in this movie at the time. "Bu No Kage"
The would be "Seven Samurai", by Kurosawa.
I've also seen/ heard the story in several other places as well. IIRC, it was based on a true incident in Japanese History, but I cannot recall who it was attributed to. It probably occured so long ago, no one remembers the origin and it just keeps getting passed down.
My former karate master talked about this concept many times with me. I think Seki Sensei did a much more beautiful job displaying the concept. Of which I greatly admire his ability to describe complicated concepts in a manner that is easier for people to understand.
A master is an expert that can teach others his craft. This didactic sense is the mark of a true master.
I have been working to marry my experience in Japanese weapon concepts into my German and Italian longsword techniques. This concept is great for it, however, I have had a hard time getting it across to some of the group I train with. I think this video will help me with that. Many thanks. I love your guys' work.
This technique does seem to be a very situational one that only works if your opponent is in a high guard and does a straight vertical cut, but if you ever do end up in this sort of situation, the shadow of 2.5 sun technique does open up a much more efficient counter
@@Lo-tf6qt I assume the underlying principle would still be applicable in most situations, though. If I understood correctly, it boils down to minimizing the energy it takes for you to dodge while still controlling the fight.
It sounds like you're training with hema guys. Most hema guys are all about the techniques taught specifically in European manuscripts.
@@Devin-n3q 100% correct. This specific group is a study, theory, and disseminate group focused mainly on Meyer, Talhoffer, and Fiore. I am the only one with eastern and indo-persian experience. The debates on footwork are epic when we step out of the box. It's a good experience.
Hey, we did that "tape" drill in Aikido in the early 90's!! 😊
Back when Aikido was based more on strikes. 😢
I took Aikido in the 90s and did this tape drill as well. Seki Sensei’s video made a couple of things become clearer. In aikido we did a drill when we had to move while keeping a stick held between our bodies just above the knot. So we had to keep our centers facing each other.
I love this technique. Moving only just enough to evade the attack, but not enough for the opponent to react in time to counter. The concept is easy to understand, but difficult to master as we usually, instinctively want to "dodge" as far away from the attack or the "danger" as possible. But learning to dodge or evade more efficiently and staying within the proper range for countering is one of the hallmarks of a true budoka. 🥋
Thank you for making a special video on this, so everyone can learn this concept. 🙇♂
Such a beautiful, simple, and logical technique. It must have taken nerves of steel for warriors in the past to watch their opponent's sharp sword miss them by a hair and then calmly counterattack.
It helps when you are wearing armor. Then if you misjudge and are off by 1 sun, the cut glances off your armor. The lack of armor is why so many arts changed during the Edo period.
This guy is amazing, truly a sword master
You can tell he spent a lifetime just perfecting the movements but he also knows why they're important and how to use them, they are proper movements and not just flashy stuff that would never work, just this one alone *sounds* like it would never work, sounds like something taken out of a shounen manga and yet you can clearly see why and how it would work by just seeing this man perform it, truly amazing
So that's probabaly why the moves all look so smooth subtle and fast. Such an interesting concept.
Huge thanks for sharing. Now I can go rewatch all previous videos again with this in mind.😅
It's like the concept of Yagyu Shinkahe Ryu where you dodge small enough to make the enemy open himself.
In FMA, that's a triangle side step or a shuffling step! Awesome!🔥🔥
It is interesting to compare these techniques of aligning the centre line, softening the knees, and minimal footwork, with similar techniques used in some partner dances. If you use them, you can execute one step while leading your partner to do any different (but logically corresponding) step in any direction at the same time. When I teach beginners I often wear a centred brooch to help them focus on the centre line of my body. And we also use lines on the floor to show how the feet should not move too far. It's really the same thing, just with opposite motivation.
We have this in our art as well. We call it Apavartana (refraction). Misaligning the opponent by 22.5 degree angles (in practice we often get 24-25 degree angles because 22.5 is perfection) to void their attacks while landing our own.
今回は白線が引かれているのでわかりやすいですね。
無刀でも体捌きがわかっているから堂々と入り身が出来る。
The simplest dishes are the best measure of a master chef's skill. The simplest basic footwork seems much the same in martial arts.
I knew there are some footwork concealing techniques there, I was often unable to recognize stances Seki Sensei was using in other videos
In firearms training for civilians here in most of the USA, we refer to this as "get-off-the-X" . . . also known as "Move"!
Sensi only smiles when He knows how easy it would be to slay.....
Wing Chun dodging is based on this principle. You can also find it in various internal martial arts. It's interesting to see it applied to a weapon.
I understand it perfectly, being able to DO it is another matter.
You need a skilled opponent and great skill yourself ti pull it of deceptivley
Excellent footwork, I love it. Love his movements.

Awesome, great lesson, thank you gentlemen.
Very enlightening. Especially the Muto Ryu technique at the end. Have to add that one to my repertoire.
Thank you for your videos.
Fascinating!

Excellent video! Thank you!
Awesome
Thank you for posting this video. It's very informative and it deals with something so basic novices like me forget about it. Some questions: (1) How do you apply this against a kiriage strike and (2) how do you apply this against a kesagiri strike? Your inputs would be most appreciated.
funny thing is I move like this at work, in a tiny cooler loading heavy crates... damn I can be a samurai someday! but seriously footwork is awesome
Perfect video!
Tape = centerline of a vertical attack
Maneuver = danger close sidestep
Gratitude
Thank you Shogo and Seki Sensei for this beautiful explanation! I thought about langka (steps) in pencak silat as soon as I saw Seki Sensei move. It's so beautiful to see such strong connections between arts and have the chance to share them.
Just a question: did I really see Wagakki Band members in the opening??? 😂❤
Greetings from Italy 😊
Always amazing to learn and to see.🎉🎉🎉
ありがとうございました。
Thanks
Obi-no-kame seems to be assumed knowledge in Aikido's maai as well, rarely stated so clearly. Usually we either go right to a hanmi stance and then look for attacks and techniques from that, or we learn right alignment by feel during freeform attacks and flow drills. Nice to see it planly named here

Oh I recognize this from my bujinkan days. Fu no kata. The way I understood it was that you're a revolving door and the attack is the wind
I like it very interesting.
I practice kendo, and this video made me realize the benefits of how I normally move, I just slide, hop and pivot because its fun, lol.
Beautiful technique
This technique, in actual combat, is very effective against opposing thrusting weapons. However, the likelihood of a perfectly vertical slash is low in most circumstances and even a small amount of diagonal motion will result in you still being struck.
This is a good example of how dojo-specialized techniques lack reliability in real combat, though it simultaneously exhibits an effective counter to primary-thrust weaponry
In Highschool I was in a military program and what's interesting is that you must pivot on your ball and heel in a very similar way when changing direction. I wonder if that's the lowest energy or most subtle way to move.
Always excellent. I learn a little something every time.
It seems very risky. It makes me think of the boxing technique where you pull away from a punch just enough to barely avoid the punch. You have to be very good with gauging the distance but if done correctly you can do a very fast and effective counter. Mayweather is a good example of using this technique.
Yes, it requires a lot of practice to get it right
@ absolutely and thanks for the reply. I would like to suggest or ask if you could do some collaboration with a Japanese Aikido channel called Aikido Shinburenseijuku. This channel is all in Japanese with English subtitles so it would be just awesome if you could explain some of it in English. I believe Aikido also teaches sword techniques called Aiki-ken but I’m interested in all aspects. Thanks!
Very interesting method and really worth learning. One question though, how will you use that method against diagonal and sweeping attacks?
Interesting stuff. Just a little heads up, the "b" in "subtle" is silent and there's no "n" in "trajectory." Your English sounds so natural that I was taken aback when I heard those. Haha
Hope that helps. Thanks for all the videos, guys. 👍🏻
Stabs are king
Moving on and off line like this is interesting. What happens if the opponent has the same dominant hand, southpaw vs southpaw? And does the sliding turn work as well in grass and dirt as it does on that soft wooden floor?
30 degrees beats 45 every time move in the shadows
Another technigue "Crow jump" please.
I want to know more about the benefits of lowering the waist and relaxing the knees
It lets you float so people can't see your step in your shoulders.
Exactly what danielcox7629 said: With the way we walk normally, you can notice when a person is about to make a sudden move by the way they dip their shoulders and the upper body lowers a few centimeters. If you always keep your knees slightly bent and a lowered center of gravity you can minimize those cues.
❤
But what if the opponent doesn’t make such a long swing? Yes, the force of the cut will be worse, but I think it will be almost impossible to evade if you make a shorter and faster swing. I would also like to see what to do against the horizontal cut
Kind of like a boxer split step
Appreciate the detailed breakdown! Just a quick off-topic question: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). What's the best way to send them to Binance?
those technique make the fight end so fast ... like the winner just stab the opponent and game over 🤣🤣👍👍👍👍
How does the historic measuring of japan more sense than the imperial system😭
👍👍👍💖💖💖💯
So it's not just us boxers
This basics are Extreme important with out it it is out of fighting this is my opinion
Not trying to be snarky but If they cut diagonally don't you just die?
How do you know if they are going to cut straight down or on a diagonal?
To be clear i'm not suggesting they would react to the dodge and change their cut.
I use the technique so that I don't stub my big toe when going around furniture
it seems to me to only be functional against a 12 to 6 strike. a 2 to 8 strike which i swear is the most common, would be problematic. am i wrong?
This looks so simple, but I’m sure it’s not.
The b in subtle is silent 😅 sorry
How will this be applied against a diagonal attack
I think you just need to penetrate deeper into the opponent's guard to be safe, if you find yourself on the inside. If you're outside of the blade, you're already safe, then you can do the same to take control of the opponent. It doesn't matter where you find yourself, until you use the correct timing to counterattack. Otherwise, another attack will be on its way.
We’ve made a video about that: ua-cam.com/video/johlh8Zaf98/v-deo.htmlsi=WEcU8HuxSGt7WbEI
A naive criticism is that this seems to only work if your opponent is cutting down the straight vertical and is launching that attack from time of the foot distance, but I've been... subtly noticing such footwork/centerline angles even if the opponent's attack was a diagonal or horizontal. In those cases, it's less about dodging and more about subtly obtaining a superior angle to get that much better leverage to win the counterattack in the way I want it to go (and also allowing my opponent to push me into the right place sometimes). Or getting the opponent's centerline just barely off mine so as to defend decisively. I'm a HEMA longsword practitioner for the most part; I doubt I fully understand this lesson especially since I'm removed from the system it's embedded in, but I can see parallels to this from a more blade-action centric point of view (where one doesn't trust movement alone to successfully void, but instead bets on both a dodge and the blade moving in position to guard. )
