If you've ever bought a new suit or dress slacks, you've noticed some pockets are sewn shut. The reason for this is purely aesthetic.
Manufacturers want suits to retain their tailored look, but as people try the clothes on they can alter the fabric's shape. This is especially true with the pockets. Stuffing your hands inside can stretch them out. The result is a slightly dilapidated-looking suit. Sewing pockets shut keeps suits looking fresh.
You can remove the stitching yourself after buying it or keep it sewn shut to retain the crisp look.
There are also "pockets" that are purely decoration. If you remove the stitching from those you'll just end up with a hole. You can tell if your pocket is real by its stitching. Functional pockets are usually sewn shut with a single thread. If you cut it and tug, it should unravel easily. If the stitching is hard to remove, it's probably not a real pocket. Whatever suits you!

This is incorrect. The REAL reason the pockets are sewn shut is to guarantee that the garment is new. The pocket can only be sewn shut from the inside during the manufacturing process, not after the garment is finished. If you tried to sew the pocket shut on a finished garment, you would sew right through from front to back

DudeRevolution The non-pockets are typically lower priced items. I.e. cutting costs. They still give the visual illusion that there is a pocket, but really there isn't. Also, if you look at suit jackets/blazers, you'll find that most of the cuff buttons don't do anything. They are just for show. Another example of giving an illusion that there is function to the form

First suit I got was for a school project. I thought everything about the suit was weird. One back pocket for a wallet and the coat pockets were closed. After pulling at the pockets they opened up. I was really surprised by that. My grandma told me the outside pockets really were not supposed to be used. Those are more of the fashion then something people use. In school I was taught the outside pockets are shut so you don't use them. The idea there was so the person wearing the jacket doesn't get pick pocketed.
If I want to use a pocket square and the pocket is sewn up I need to remove the stitching?

Formal wear is not for transporting cargo.
You just need a pocket for a pocket square.
