Why are the pockets on my new suit sewn closed? And what are these Xs?

Thanks for the video, I recently bought my first suit, and the fact that it didn't have pockets just didn't seem correct. Even after looking online and seeing that it was likely stitched shut, I still didn't have the confidence to cut threads on my brand new jacket until I saw your video. Thanks again!

I recently bought a new suit for my uncle's funeral (which was today) and was peeved when I found out the pockets on the jacket were sewn shut. I really wasn't sure if I could snip them or not. Anyways I decided to look it up after I got home and found your video. Yep I checked and they were real pockets! It's so nice to have more places to carry things! Maybe a good idea though that I didn't have them open earlier today as I was one of the pallbearers and in front and you wouldn't want to see me with bulges in my jacket pockets (it was live streamed)!
    Anyways thanks so much!

I agree... The vent stitching must go, BUT I never open the breast pocket unless I know I'm definitely going to wear a scarf or hankie every time I wear the jacket. The stitching keeps the shape in dry cleaning as well. So if you aren't going to use the pockets and the stitching doesn't show... I keep it in the garment. But thanks for the video, as people need to know their options. Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵😷

True! The stitching does serve a purpose. And I personally never put anything in the breast pocket, so I might as well leave that one alone! Thanks for the Arizonan love!

Lol, my adult nephew has had a suit for around 6 years that he thought just did not come with a breast pocket that opened. I saw your video and VOILA, HE NOW HAS A POCKET!!! I snipped one little stitch and it practically fell apart!!! THANK YOU!!! He is so pleased!!!

Great video. I worked at alterations shop and we had men bring in new suits just to have the pockets, vents & tags dealt with because they were afraid of cutting the fabric. And some older suits came in for fitting or repair that still had pockets sewed up. We always asked before snipping because every once in a while they wanted them kept shut because they thought the suit would have nicer lines. I don’t think it makes a difference, but it’s their suit so I’d leave it alone. One guy still had a tag on a sleeve and wanted it left so people could see the design/ brand logo “that he paid for”. I managed to keep a straight face until he left.

I recently tried on a pair of pants at a thrift store. One pocket had been opened but the other was still stitched closed. The previous owner must have only half the need for pockets that I do. If both were still stitched closed, I'd have thought they just didn't know, but one open and one closed?

I cut open my breast pocket but it seems like the thread on one side was already loose and it exposes the inside of the suit. I assume this was a defect in the suit? But at least the pocket is open

Aged 47 here and feeling very daft after a lifetime of sewn pockets. Thank goodness I don't wear smart clothes often! Thanks anyway. The shorts I just got from the charity shop have sewn up pockets, so someone else had no idea either...
And why don't manufacturers put a little note on the tag about this? :-/

Probably unwise but I've normally just slowly ripped open the pockets. it just needs to get started and then you can pry it apart. If the seam gave me any trouble, I would stop. I've always wondered why department stores don't have a faq with jackets/coats: remove labels, open pockets, remove ALL outward facing tags.

Perfect thanks for this. Going to a wedding this week and bought a tie with a matching handkerchief but my suit jacket top pocket was sewn closed. Separating and snipping a small thread and it came straight open as you showed. Now all I need to do is to work out how to fold the handkerchief 🙂.

Speaking as a 40 year old man who hasnt had more than a dozen suits in that time. Thank you for showing me my new suit jacket has pockets. Had to really feel around the lining to see of there's a pocket or not. Took a chance with a tiny pair of scissors. Thought if have to go back tot he suit store where I had it tailored and ask them why didn't they open the pockets. Thank you for saving me the trip.

Hi I’m wondering about three small stitches on a double breasted blazer I have. There’s about three single stitches holding the high peak lapels together is this meant to be cut before wearing? They don’t seem to be extra strong so I’m thinking they may be designed to keep the high peak labels together with light creasing or folding before sale/wearing

    • @CatherineSews
