      Hey Max! Would really love to have your input on this ASAP.
      Two years later, and (I'm assuming) countless updates after, is there anything on the market that gives you the same features both on video and photo for around the same price as the NX1? Because I need to upgrade to a near-perfect hybrid and haven't been able to find anything that comes close to this camera, even considering the lens system and video codec.
      The Sony A6300/A6500 also caught my eye, but the form factor on those cameras is atrocious and the battery grips are laughable.
      Stabilization and accurate autofocus are two features that I really want, but if I had to prioritize, I'd place a good auto-focus system above IS.
      Also, does the NX1 have anything equivalent to a flat picture profile for video? Is it any good? Thank you very much for your time!

      Simple answer is no. I still own 3 NX1's. Yes there is a gamma DR more which is basically a flat profile (not not log)

    Nice pointing out the video camera/ dslr tax. That was one of the first things I learned and (somewhat) took advantage of when I was deciding between a handy cam type camera or a dslr. I think back when the taxing started the video camera was in such high demand they added that tax. Upside, you can get professional video cam results with a dslr, downfall, 30 min record time. And the time may vary as my Nikon d5200 gets 20 min... That might be getting mixed in with the processors getting too hot tho. Interesting stuff though. I'll have to look up that new law you are talking about they may pass.

    Thanks for this. I have seen a dazzling 7.9 ms rolling shutter rating for the NX1 at 1080p. (Not sure if it's accurate?) If it is, I don't understand why this factoid/feature isn't being shouted to the mountain tops. Only the Arri Amira and A7R II (at HD crop) are better at 2 and 7 ms, respectively. With the superior video CAF tests I've seen, outside of low light, this is THE video camera to own!

    Hey Max, that is exactly what I did, sold my GH4 and bought this NX1. The GH4 is a fantastic camera, but for me this camera has what I was after image wise, it has a little bit of a Nikon D800ish looking picture that, for my eye, is very pleasing. I've only used some very old Nikkor glass on this NX1, and I'm probably going to stick with all manual lenses for my video work.

    Hello Max, Love your Channel! Got a question for you. Would you recommend the NX1 as an all in one camera. Pictures/Video? Right Now I have a Sony SL1 and a Panasonic FZ1000 that I going to sell to either get the GH4 or the NX1. I know that the GH4 is older , less megapixel etc... But I rented it for a wedding video that I did with the Sigma Lens and speed booster and It looked amazing. (No autofocus or image stabilization though) Guess my question is with all the pros and cons would you recommend the NX1 instead of the GH4. I have about $2100 Budget.. I know GH5 is coming out soon but just the body might cost more than $2100. Thanks so much!

    • @MaksimYuryev

      A 6300 has a huge rolling shutter problem and no OIS Have that in mind. Otherwise, Max is right. It's a great option.

    • @MaksimYuryev
      @MaksimYuryev 8 років тому +1

      The NX1 is just about as bad as the A6300. Both have bad rolling shutter because they are reading out 6K and supersampling into 4K. The NX1 also doesn't have built in image stabilization, you just use lenses that have it if you need I.S. The NX1 does have software O.I.S but its not great, and can ruin shots. Think warp stabilizer but you cant undo the effect once its recorded in camera.

      I haven't noticed the grain your speaking of. I'm filming it with GH4 because I wanted to show the NX1 on the gimbal and mainly having the the flip out screen on the NX1. in my opinion the photo quality is much better on the nx1 compared to GH4

    Hi Max
    I noticed something...
    I have a Samsung nx1. My Computer ,,Win. 8,1 Pro,, is capable to read H265 codec and Premiere CC 2015 too -after last update ... The problem is that it can not read the ,,Gamma D,, setting (super flatt) and Master Black Level.... Rocky Mountains also ignores those settings too ... read them only in Samsun. Movie Converter...
    Next thing is that I use Anti-aliasing & Moire Filter created fof Canon Eos 70D and after modification for NX1 works great....

    Thanks, Max, this was very well-done and most useful! I am ready to move up from m43 to APS-C or FF and I'd get an NX1 now if it weren't for the low-light video performance in 4K _and_ the lack of a fully-articulating screen. The latter will sound trivial too many, but if you're a wildflower photographer and shoot a lot of very low angle stills in _vertical_ format, you'd rather not have to keep flopping onto the muddy ground. Hopefully Samsung can make everybody happy in this regard with future models.

    Good video. i don't think any of these problems are a big deal at all, which is why i love this camera. like the 29 minute record time? i will never record that long. ever, lol. and i record weddings. that one was a little knit picky, but there was more validity in some of the other criticisms. Also the codec. Yes, its a hassle. But it also has benefits which you mentioned in the video. And it will eventually be supported, it'll be a win win eventually.

    Max, you shoot your reviews with a GH4 and recommend the NX1 over the GH4 on your website.
    So 2 questions:
    1. Why do you not shoot your reviews with your NX1?
    2. I really am damn near ready to buy the NX1 but I'm still not sure about the rolling shutter. I see the stuttering with videos of cars driving along for example. Is there any way to crop the 4k recording (and still have the output be true 4k) like in the NX500 so that rolling shutter is limited (ie have the camera sample less of the sensor)?
    This is cheaper than the GH4 and at the upper range of what I can afford, so do you have any other suggestions for cameras that do 4k video, 1080p 120fps, and take good pictures?
    Thanks

    • @MaksimYuryev
      @MaksimYuryev 9 років тому +1

      Vaga Liki This is the best hybrid, much much better for photos than the GH4 and much better for slow motion. The reason I use Gh4 is flip screen so I can see myself, and no need to transcode. For shots of myself the higher 4k video quality and better low light doesn't matter when I am using lighting anyways and am just sitting there. Go for the NX1 its a better camera overall!

  • @ghostindamachine

    Regarding the flip-screen: they probably have chosen the current solution due to robustness. It's harder to make a weather sealed flip-out and rotating screen. It has more rotating points you need to seal, etc.

      it is worse than the GH4 but not worse than A7S (in my experience with all three cameras. with the a7s and 55mm 1.8 lens I could see some rolling shutter when hand holding the camera. I have not noticed it with NX1 with 45mm 1.8 which is equil to 67.5mm

    • @alexmasella6229
      @alexmasella6229 9 років тому

      Wow, thanks! I guess IS would help with rolling shutter, but the 45mm doesn't have IS. I do notice this on the GH4 because when I use a speedbooster, I don't have IS, and rolling shutter affects many of my shots, even at 35mm using a should rig.

    hey max, i ve been following your take on cameras, want to ask an advice from you, between these three cameras which one would you advice someone who is much in videos music production to go for, Canon 5d mark III, Samsung NX1 and Black magic camera

    • @MaksimYuryev
      @MaksimYuryev 9 років тому +1

      +Freddy Nezzer definitely not the 5D. The NX1 would give better low light results than the blackmagic, but the blackmagic cinema camera will give you a more film like look, and better dynamic range. If your talking about the blackmagic 2.5K then I would go for NX1. If your speaking about the Blackmagic Ursa mini 4K, i'd likely go with that, but it will cost about 3x as much for the body, battery, media.

    Hi Max, just wondering. Having gh5 on the market and other similar cameras, what would be the good to go upgrade coming from nx1? would it be gh5 or a7sII ? or should i make an effort and go straight to 1dx mark2? To be honest i liked the compromised that nx1 offered back in the day. Good sensor, really good codec, beautiful colours and really good still, but not so good rolling shutter and other video throwbacks. Anyways, gh5' sensors sucks and a7s II is not good for stills so i really don't know what will be next for me. thx

    • @BokehMarket
      @BokehMarket 7 років тому

      I'm in the same boat, but honestly I haven't seen a suitable replacement for the NX1. I think the (rumored) forthcoming A7 III may be the first camera to truly surpass it. Even 3 years later the Samsung kills it on video and stills like no other camera. The Fuji X-T2 is interesting, but doesn't have the one thing the NX1 lacks to make it truly future proof - IBIS. Unless you're hitting limitations with glass, I'd say stick with the NX1. Otherwise you probably will have to move to a 1DX2 and break the bank.

    • @andonivr
      @andonivr 9 років тому

      My problem is that background is blurry and sometimes the players move to background and AF system does not adjust anything, so I think that this problem can be solved with GH4, however, I do not know which one is the best for sports videos, also I thought about A7s or canon C100 or something like that.

    • @MaksimYuryev
      @MaksimYuryev 9 років тому

      Andoni Villarreal Ok I thought that may be the issue. The GH4 would be perfect for you then! Even at F2.8 shooting 4k the DOF would be similar to shooting the 7D at F4 but your lighting will stay the same. The Autofocus is not as good as the NX1 but with having more in focus that will be fine.

    just bought one. Amazing. LCD = horrible with just up and down & no left to right. HDMI is Confusing and frustrating. Not any of the standard connections for that. What you see on the screen before recording is not what you get after hitting record. Guess that is good for those that use light meters for proper exposure. If not, its frustrating.

    • @MaksimYuryev
      @MaksimYuryev 9 років тому

      Ted Irving GH4 uses same HDMI output, the USB is new Micro USB 3.0 which allows you to use the standard micro usb 2 like with most android phones to charge/transfer, or use a new micro usb 3 like with new Galaxy Note phones for faster transfers. Before hitting REC. turn on movie preview mode and you'll see exactly what you'll get with a 16x9 aspect. Another trick if you want to shoot quicker is turn your photo aspect ratio to 16x9 as well and then you don't have to think of the 16x9 format for video.

    I agree with the top left wheel, I don´t like it one bit either. I believe you can program ISO to one of the 3 back buttons, not sure if that´s what you´re doing here spinning the wheel like that or another setting.
    One problem which I believe it´s important for many people, including event photographers, is the lack of a silent shutter. It´s actually of the worst things about this camera, to me, and most especially when other rival cameras, like the A7S, do have it, being even better in video and with a sweet FF sensor.
    And very interesting comment about the noise at higher ISOs, that´s something I haven´t considered and may end up being a bigger problem than I thought, since I presumed the pretty clean lower ISOs would scale proportionally. I´d love to see some more samples about this issue.
    And finally, glad to see you didn´t list the excellent video-AF on this camera as a "con"... ;)

    Yep, most of the downsides are also irrelevant for my use. I'm glad the screen isn't a typical flip out, way to fragile. The buffer isn't an issue either. Unless you're a professional sports photographer, which you wouldn't be shooting with this camera, how many photo's do you possible need? Half-hour record limit, again, how long do you need it? Even for events, you'd better be shooting that with at least two cameras rolling simultaneously, so it's just a simple matter of staggering the record. Low-light, I would agree with that, however, I haven't had the opportunity to shoot with an extremely fast lens, so that may make a little difference, but all in all, yeah, I'd like to have seen clean all the way up to 3200 ISO. The H.265 transcoding really doesn't bother me to much, as most of what I shoot, I next to never immediately go into the edit. Hopefully, we all won't have to worry about that to much longer. Lastly, forgot to add above, the single file created for the half-hour record, definitely trumps having it span an unlimited record.

    • @MaksimYuryev
      @MaksimYuryev 9 років тому

      I'm typically recording events with 3 cameras. Its nice to set it and not have to go re set it. At times I'm not able to move if I have to record something going on and my 3rd safety cam ended stopping recording for a bit of time. But this issue isn't huge I'd still buy 3 of these and sell GH4's if it had h.264 codec :) It seems the NX1 will work great for you, have you picked one up yet?

What I've done in the past is start to get ready at 25min and wait till I can tell the speaker pauses then reset really quick.

      I agree with everything but the flip out screen part: my g7 has stood a thousand and on etempest but still works perfectly. On the other hand, rx100 mk i is wearing out a bit :(

      +1 01 I actually have the nx500 and the nx1 when they came out to be honest I was a Canon fan boy I had the 60d and 7d but nothing compares to the nx1 it's a really good buy the picture quality is AMAZING and video is just beautiful ... it's a beastly machine for slow motion as well .. you should go for it man don't even think about it

    • @wickedkid909
      @wickedkid909 8 років тому

      +1 01 look to be honest that's a lot of money buy the body by itself and buy your self the lenses aside it's cheaper .. well I got my nx500 for 800 when it came out and my nx1 for 1,500 body ... you should look into Rokinon lens 85mm it's actually a f/1.4 wich is BEASTLY FOR PICTURES AND VIDEOS but it's going to be hard cause it's Manuel everything this is one of the best lens I have it goes for 270.. I also have the 45mm f/1.8 goes for 234 on amazon also the other nice Lil kit lens to get is the 16-50mm lens . first go for the camera get that Rokinon and a battery grip wich would be really needed or go for the 45mm you'll be good with these for now unless u don't mind spending a lot of money but these are the lenses that I have right now I am going to buy later that expensive lens but it's too much hahaha just go for the Rokinon 85mm it's wonderful look up reviews before anything ... and no I wasn't in the military lol I only have like 15 friends in it haha but yeah man go for it and buy some nice lenses

    Yeah, I hear ya, there's no way you could use this camera for anything like a wedding. I'm guessing a camera could in fact have to codecs within? If that holds true, then I would have to agree with you on that point also, include H.264 as well. Samsung, I know you tune in to Max's UA-cam Channel, listen to him!!!

      nice. I purchased the 7000 a year ago and was disappointed that it was a 16bits motor. Have to upgrade mine to the 32bits motor. Hoping to see your 7800 in action with the gh4. The same build I'm trying to go for.

    Max, does Premiere Elements support the H.265 codec ?

    • @MaksimYuryev
      @MaksimYuryev 9 років тому

      Elements no. No program supports it yet, premiere pro will get support in about a month but elements will probably take between 6 months to 2 years to gain support (and of course you'll have to pay to update to the latest version once they release it)

    • @angelllacuna8889
      @angelllacuna8889 9 років тому

      The exception being Power Director 13, which I think supports the H.265 codec

    • @MaksimYuryev

      +Angel Llacuna yes, but you need an Nvidea GPU with an older driver for some reason (or so their site says)

    4k record time limit is likely due to processor overheating at a higher limit, not a tax issue.

    You are nice i mean gentle or kinda hard to describe.A simple good human.
    thanks for this.
    But We would have to wait for either GH 5 if it will have a 5 axis image stabilization and low light powerhouse OR we wait Sony A7s II with in camera 4k recording and 5 axis image stabilization. other than that I am very okay with my GH 3 only till these or similar camera packed feature have been released. and As for the samsung NX 1 too many turn offs. Which if not for your this video many of us would not have known. So thanks so much .

    • @MaksimYuryev

  • @johnreed1576
    @johnreed1576 9 років тому

    Everyone is all panicked about the h.265. I tried a few converters and the samsung converter works well. For 4k in-body, it doesn't seem like that big a tradeoff. The GH4 cuts clips into 6 minute chunks, which is a huge compromise that you don't have to deal with here.

    Forgot to add, that no doubt having to transcode a 3 camera NX1 talking head shoot would be marathon worth of transcoding.

    • @MaksimYuryev
      @MaksimYuryev 9 років тому

      Yes! I get about 6 hours worth of footage per camera at a wedding. It takes me about 1:2 to 1:3 ratio to convert. So to convert a single wedding it would be 36-54 hours of non stop transcoding. =O

  • @marcus3d
    @marcus3d 9 років тому

    The smearing is not because of h.265, but some internal denoising the camera is doing.
    The only downside to h.265, as far as I can tell, is that some software don't yet support it. However, that's really a problem with that software and not with the camera. Also, this problem will be going away really quickly, because h.265 is becoming mainstream fast.

    • @MaksimYuryev
      @MaksimYuryev 9 років тому

      I hope your right Marcus. I guess the only way to test it is using a Shogun external recorder to prores.

    • @marcus3d
      @marcus3d 9 років тому

      Max Yuryev The denoising might very well be in the camera's h.265 encoder pipeline. I just meant that it's not a problem with the h.265 format itself, but was put there on purpose by Samsung's engineers.

    • @MaksimYuryev
      @MaksimYuryev 9 років тому

      Marcus Sundman I think that's probably what it is. Looking at photos and then the h.265 video the photos are at least 1 stop cleaner maybe more and without smearing.
