ATV aDrums: But With A Roland TD17 Drum Module

- So I recently tested this ATV aDrums Artist kit with a Roland TD17 drum module. It's a great combo, that works very very well. It's probably the most effect (but still inexpensive) way to get into a solid ATV setup :) Special thanks to Edrumcenter for inviting me come over and film! More videos to come!

Your channel is a true service to the edrums community! I am really into edrums and there’s no question I couldn’t find an answer to, in one of your videos! Much appreciation man!!
No try playing Acustic....... Like you just picked up sticks for the first time.. May as well get a autotuner microphone call yourself a singer too
Good video as usual! Thanks for stopping by to try some stuff out.
Awesome stuff, great to see this kit and module combo in action! Edrumcenter seems like a great place, needs to be somewhere like that in the UK, would love to try more combinations out before buying.
This is super interesting. I was thinking of buying this combination but went for the ATV kit and AD5 in the end. I’m new to edrums and have just been trying to replicate my acoustic kit and AD5 seems to do that nicely. But as I get more experienced with edrums maybe I’ll want to get something with more range like a td50 or mimic or a VST so this sort of content is so useful. Thanks for all the videos Justin.
You are awesome man. Keep the video coming. Us drummers that use E-drums need more representation.
Hell yeah dude finnaly I have been waiting for a video like this I'm hella keen on getting this kit and I need your opinion lmao
I really love the ride cymbal its hands down the best e-cymbal on the market (outside rolands digital one of course)
That's great news. I was considering selling my TD-17KVX ( without the module ) and buying an ATV kit. That sounded pretty sweet . The one thing I'm not crazy about is the cymbal selection on the TD-17 module. I think there should have been more bright cymbals. Most are on the dark side and are a little quiet and less dynamic. Although the bell sounds are great . Don't get me wrong , I think that with editing , the module on the whole is fantastic. Especially for $600. Going to start doing some research and see how much I can get. It is in absolute mint condition. Thanks and keep up the great work !
My first impression not reading anything more then “ATV” was “Oooo, the aD5 sounds BAD”. Great drumming as always though!
Justin, thanks for the Great and Timely video. Recently, I have been wondering how this combo (td17 + atv kit) would be like.
On the other hand, you mentioned, in the video, that you switched drum module?
Great video! Quick question, do you recall at all the settings that were used in this video? Did you add any compression or anything after the fact? I love my TD-17 and I'm pretty happy with the sounds overall, but I think this video sounds better than mine.
So, either that bass drum is really small, or Justin is secretly a giant haha. Great video man!

Great video Justin! Thank you so much for doing what you do!
*** Had a question, I'm buying a used Roland SPD-S,
Will a Roland VH-11 Hi-hat work as a Hi-hat controller
if I connect it to the HH CTRL input in the back of the SPD-S ??
I’m thinking about doing this
Always like to see you jamming behind the kit Justin!! Cool review!! I think the kick drum looks also fairly small as well. Is it 18"? Still much better than what I have though!!
Thanks Zax! Yeah it's a pretty compact drumset with the 18" kickdrum. And it doesn't help that I'm really tall, makes the kit look smaller than it is.
Hi
Great review !!!
Can you use EZ drummer 2 with the original module? Because i haven't seen the option for ATV module in the EZ Drummer software
Sounds good!
One question, is the snare pad compatible with closed rims?
Hi do you have any other module recommendations for the ATV Adrums expanded set?
The thing is though, buying the adrums with the module is cheaper than buying the kit and ad5 individually. You get a discount on the module you could say. The td17 is not exactly that great sounding anyways and is really limited with the one shot samples and everything else being your standard processed roland sound. in the end you do save a couple hundred bucks, but you give up the rim click and a bunch of raw sound quality as well as suboptimal triggering. The ATV pads really do respond best with its own module.
Amen! Adrums and ad5 have served me very bloody well indeed! I adore ATV!!
@@JesusLordOfLords455 Hopefully they won't disappear into the ether since they practically shut down outside of japan. When did they last release a new product?
which atv pad do you have? Do you think the ATV xD-P13M is a good replacement for the pdx-12?
What about the Mimic Pro? Can you use the wood piece to get side stick and rim shot?
Very cool
I own a TD-17kvx, and have started to upgrade the pads and cymbals. I’m currently looking into a larger ride cymbal. I’d love to get a Roland 18” Digital Ride, however that’s only available for the TD-50. So it looks like my best options for high quality larger ride cymbals are Roland’s CY-15R or the ATV 18” Ride. I watched your video comparing Roland’s Digital Ride to ATV’s 18” Ride and it seems like the ATV is almost as good as the Digital Ride. Would you say that having the ATV 18” Ride would be nicer to use on a TD-17 than a CY-15R would be?
I think de ATV cymbals are superior to the roland ones in every single way but one. The problem I have with the ATV cymbals is that to stop the cymbal from rotating, it uses a assymmetrical weight distribution. Which is fine except when you play with your cymbals flat like me, then they will rotate and stress the cables, which is annoying as hell.
what pads dis you go for rack and floor toms?
Hi, wanted to know what all digital drum kits are there like this one? That looks like acoustic
What kit are you playing on the td 17?
Was that the td17 in the intro? What drumtec expansion pack is that?
Thanks in advance Justin
I wonder if ATV would consider a 16" or 14" bass drum to go along with the 10" rt and 13" ft?
Wich trigger settings do you use for the Atv Snare, tom, floortom and bassdrum?
Will you make a video where you talk about the Yamaha DTX 920K? It's now around 2500 dollars. Is it worth it? Or is the Alesis Strike Pro SE better? Or maybe this ATV + Roland setup?
Great video as always.
Justin gettin buffed!
That small ATV kit looks amazing. Would I be better off buying a breakbeats or SPL kit and putting my own triggers inside???? Or should I just buy ATV kit new/used already good to go??? I have td-17 and just ordered a Yamaha Dtx Pro. Yamaha just released drum kits with mesh heads so I’m fairly confident the drums will work fine. Cymbals I know I’ll need Yamaha for hihat/ride. 2 zone crashes are no issue.
Niceeee 👍🔥
If I need to replace my ROLAND KD 10 kick pad, what options would you recommend ? to play with TD17KWX kit.
Love your videos Justin and they were very helpful as I narrowed down my e-Drums choices. However I’m personally really surprised by your preference for the TD-17 versus the ATV AD5 module. As an acoustic drummer looking to replicate the acoustic experience as closely as possible I personally find the AD5 sounds SO much more natural/realistic and dynamic than the TD-17... to my ear the differences are anything but subtle, The TD-17 sounds toy-like to me in comparison. Sure it’s great to be able to tweak but there are so few genuinely good sounds to start with that it’s still pretty restrictive. What I get with the AD5 is much less sounds but almost every one of them feels usable in some context and you can get some really interesting kits if you built your own from the individual instruments. And the additional sounds on the ATV sound store are uniformly excellent. Yes it’s a niggle that they make you pay for them, but you can audition them before download so avoiding paying for sounds you don’t like or probably won’t use... which the TD-17 is full of! No, I don’t work for ATV... just a customer telling it like I see/hear it. FYI I owned a TD-17 (expanded) with Hart pads for many years and was always tweaking to try and find a “perfect” sound. And I recently purchased a TD-17KVX but sent it back after a week (pads toy-like too). Now one very happy owner over an ATV aDrums kit with AD5 module and I finally have an experience that inspires me to spend my time playing... not tweaking. Finally, if you want to take your e-kit to the ultimate level best investment is a tactile monitoring throne (eg. Porter & Davies)... have mine hooked up to my AD5 and the realism added is incredible.
Hey that's completely cool. We don't have to agree on what sound is best or not. I agree the aD5 physically sounds more natural. But the lack of basic editing features like compression make the module a no go for me. In my personal setup, I use Superior Drummer 3 for actual recordings, and I use Roland modules just for personal monitoring. To each his own, I'm glad you found the right module for you!
65 Drums Thanks Justin - you’re right of course and the world is a better place for differences in taste :-). Oh and just to note the typo in my original comment
: it was a TD20 (expanded) I used with the Hart pads and cymbals - not a TD17 of course. Modules aside we clearly agree though that the aDrums and ATV cymbals are great. Keep up the great work.... a great service to the e-drumming community. 👍
Angus E I was surprised by Justin’s comments about the ad5 as he’s usually trying to be positive about most products unless they are absolute garbage. The ad5, IMO after about 4 months of use, represents a terrific value and should push module developers to make more affordable modules that play high quality samples. The adrums plus the ad5 is a marriage that requires some work initially to get things really dialed in, but the payoff is phenomenal. I turn it on, I play, and I don’t waste time thinking about the sound, it’s just good. That’s what I wanted. It replicates sitting down and playing an acoustic kit where you really have one sound. In this case though you can at least have some other options.
@@TheTruthMatters1971 Totally agree with you and Angus. I had the Td-17 module. Nothing wrong with it. It was great in many ways. I Just found myself never being 100% satisfied with the sounds. Same with the TD-30 I play at church. Tons of kits, all kinds of flexibility. Just never had the sounds I was used to playing acoustic drums. I Was able to find a great deal on the aD5. Figured if I hated it, I could get my money back. After a day of back to back comparison I sold the TD-17. Was a no brainer (at least to me) as far as sounds and feel go. The additional bonus is, no more constant tweaking with the module and more than actual playing!...
@@franklentz4727 yep, turn it on, play.
Somebody asked me if ATV cymbals would work with Strike Pro module. I think he has SD3 too. Thanks Justin
Does a Roland TD-12 Modul works with the ATV aDrum Kit ? The Roland TD-12 Modul don't have a multitrigger input and i'm not sure, if the atv cymbals works with the modul. Thanks and greetings from germany :)
What cymbal type should be selected in the module's pad settings to be perfectly compatible with atv cymbals ?
I have a hihat 14, 2 crash 14 and a ride 16.
I don't know if there's a specific setting to improve compatibility, but I've noticed that when using a vts instrument (addictive drums) the cymbals react strangely : when I hit the cymbal and it sounds, a simple touch with my stick causes a muffling effect, as if I were grabbing the cymbal with my hands. I don't get it...
If you have an idea, I'd love to hear it.
I'd love it.
I've found the solution: there's a parameter in the module's MIDI menu "Cymbal Choke Shot" set to ON, changing it to OFF corrects the problem.
I have the same set up. I notice that the hi hats are slow to "spring up" when i release my foot from the pedal. This causes my first 2-3 hits to sound like a closed or semi-closed hi hat until the cymbal pad has elevated or sprung all the way up where it sounds like a full open hi hat. Almost like the cymbal pad is too heavy for the springs. Is this a hi hat stand issue or maybe the triggers? It also makes hi hat barking near impossible. Would love to hear some of your thoughts!
Take apart your hihat stand. Its likely the spring rotated inside the shaft. Happened to me years ago
Is the Strike fully compatible?
Any issues with using this kit with the td27?
What is it about preset to buy? Where can i find it?
Hi justin, didn’t you have any issues with the hats using the Td 17 module? I feel those 14’’ hats are not 100% compatible with the td 17. What are your thoughts on the subject?
I talked all about the hihat compatibility in the video
Go to 5:43
Will it work with the TD-50X
hi,first of all i love all your videos but dont comment that often because my english is not the best. but on this one i have a few questions. i wanted to use my atv cymbals and hihat on the td17 but the hihat sound awfull. can i ask you what settings u use in the module to get the hihat working?
I was at a drumstore and the settings were already preset, I didn't change anything for the video. Are you saying the response to your playing isn't right? or just the sounds are bad?
@@65Drums for example if i close the hihat the module still play a sound of an open hihat. I tried the settings of the vh11 or 10 and its still there.
The video was recommended to me '46 seconds' ago, clicked immediately, I see see comments from 5 minutes ago -__-
That's the way youtube is lol
It looks like you're playing on one of those junior sets. I also own the atv ride and am using it with a td9 ,its a great ride cymbal
Yeah it's a very compact kit, 18" kickdrum. Looks even smaller because I'm so freaking tall lol
Odd, I switched and use and aD5 with my Roland drums and sold the Td-17. To each their own I guess?
Hey every module has something different for everyone :) Glad you found a module that you like. What I've noticed with my channel is that no matter what module I play on, I get comments saying how bad it is. Even when I'm playing $2000 modules like a TD50 or a Pearl Mimic some like it, and others don't. And when I play on drum software drummers can't agree either.
@@65Drums There was nothing wrong with the TD-17 module. It is great. And I was able to get the aD5 used so it was "almost" an even swap...I love your videos and have learned so much. You are spot on when you say the aD5 is not for everyone. I gave up much flexibility in the switch. I just like the sounds that much, and I only really need a few great sets.
What is your current drum set up?
I have a question. Is the td 1dmk the Best drum kit on that price range?
Yes, by far. Even with just 15 kits that you cant modify anything other than minor sensitivity adjustments, the sounds and the durability are many levels over any other option out there. I paid 50 bucks less for the old tdk 1kv and it has toy like hard rubber pads.
You will find not being able to make your own kit limiting in a year. You will like some sounds, but you are stuck with the kits as they are given and cant concentrate the sounds you want into a kit.
I dont believe you can use it with software or any other module except the TD1 unless they have change the ports. It also only has one audio out, a 1/8.
But I beat the heck out of way more than I have seen anyone else strike ekits, and it has stood up.
@@evankeal thank you for the answer! Can I change the sounds on the default kits? Like an user kit.
im one of the fans of the ad5 i dont care about trying to make something sound almost real and spending tons and tons of time pressing buttons i just wanna fire it up and have very realistic sounds and dynamics without hooking up a computer an interface and a direct box as a matter of fact i havent even changed the samples from the ones i dialed in years ago, because different sounds dont matter to me as much as a realistic feeling does, however they need to make the ad5 on par with the exs-5 because its advertised as the little brother of the ad5 but in the end seems to have less functionality, i want to have playalongs and a metronome like the little one because its advertised as having less features than the ad5 but infact has less, justin how did the ex module feel to play ? better then the ad5 as far as triggering and sounds? when i went to namm i just played the adrums expanded setup and farted around with the cymbal demo setups they had going but i would hate to know that the exs-5 plays 10 times better then the ad5 module and would be kinda pissed that its not being updated to its counterpart
EXS is full sets only no mix and match instruments. I think the best sets are made by mixing sounds. You can get play a longs/metronome in the aD5 by hooking your phone up to the auxiliary in on the aD5. Granted having those features built in would be nice. But the built in play a longs are rather crappy anyhow. My hope is that ATV comes through with the wifi mixer app and Link devises. If and when they do the Ad5 will owners will be golden!! Granted it is a bit of a let down the EXS is almost the aD5 for much less, and they seem to be leaving the early ATV aD5 guys in the dark. I got my aD5 used half price. So even if ATV does not come through I will still be happy. I still am very hopeful they do. I had the TD-17 and play a TD-3o at church. Both are much more flexible and have more sounds and adaptability then the aD5. But , I will take the aD5 before either every day all day. I don't need 100 sets 97 of which I will play once. I want 5 great kits that will sound great in my hose or at a gig without spending hours messing with the module. But hey that's just you and me...
@@franklentz4727 online you can create Sets for the esx
Thanks for doing this. I’ve been thinking of getting a TD17 since I’m unhappy with the ad5 limitations and ATVs pretty much abandonment of the promised enhancements to it as shown at last years NAMM
The aD5 definitely has it's fans, but I perfer other ones. Just wanted to show it was possible with the shell and cymbal pack
I bought it with the assumption that they’d have the ATV link and the software for importing samples that they showed at NAMM. Not a peep from the company despite many of us asking questions. Seems like they shelved the artist pro too.
I like the small footprint of these edrums. Too expensive though.
Hahaha, these are actually in mid to low price range hahaha
65 drums might be a little too much for one drum kit, maybe I'm wrong.
Check out Terry Bozzio😂
@@johndef5075 even mr. Bozzio has less than 65 drums:

That's not including cymbals, though.
@@Brinoctopus bruh, if someone has 40 then 65 is plausible
Never enough drums
This is really interesting!!how about ATV aDrums with td-27 drum module?
Seems to trigger well😃
I’d use a td25 drum module
Serious question. Why?
In my opinion it sounds better
TD25 is a great drum module
But I thought the td17 was newer than the td25 and based off the td30?
@@bobloblaw8660 The TD17 is based on the TD50 but actually sounds better IMHO.
They make full size cymbals and then put that little bass drum on it. Kinda ruins the look for me. 20" or bigger.
If you already have a module and wants to save money, then yes TD-17 fine, maybe you buy another module later, otherwise it looks like a downgrade to me...
I’m so early to this video and I really don’t know what to say 🤣
Hey justin you're the only drummer that doesn't have a single video that is not useful and entertaining!
Thanks dude I really appreciate it!
