The only way this would work is if the "lieutenant" was actually a senior officer but rolling around incognito (it is Berlin 1945) or his promotion to a higher rank had been put through but none of the adornments were available (again Berlin 1945). The latter seems feasible as Ferdinand Schörner was made a fieldmarschall along with at least one other whose name escapes me at the moment.

Also remember that only a few short years later the Germans were our friends and the Russians our enemies. We also employed many of their top brass and scientists and spent a fortune rebuilding their broken bodies and cities that we ourselves spent fortunes destroying in the first place. How CRAZY is THAT, so crazy you could not possibly make it up.
