Thanks for watching! And thank you for 10k! This is definitely one of the best overviews of the early history of the magical girl genre I've seen on UA-cam to date! Very few people make the effort of tracking down and watching these shows when they talk about them, so seeing you sincerely giving each one a shot is really nice to see. Your writing and presentation style are also really clean and enjoyable. Huge kudos, and thank you very much of course for the Mahou Profile shoutout at the end!
My favorite show ever made is Pretty Cure. It’s so good, and I consider it the cream of the crop when it comes to Magical Girl Anime. And i’m so sick of people calling any show a “sailor moon ripoff.” They just need to do research before calling something that it isn’t.
I have re-watched and listened all renditions of Cutie Honey's Op from the classic 70's series to the later Ova and even Hideako's Anno's live action film. It is truly God Tier, one of my favorite Openings of all time.
I've been sporadically going through Mahou Profile for the last year-ish, so seeing another perspective on this stuff was neat. Dunno at what point I'll give any of these a shot, but most of them look like a fun time.
Nice video! Really interesting to see more of theses on the magical girl genre on UA-cam, just wish you mentioned Mahou Shoujo Lalabel since she's also part of the Toei Majokko Series in the 70s despite her show being released in 1980
Can't believe the first magical girls show were reverse Isekai Seriously though it s hard to believe that a genre changed so much in what tropes it uses most: the very core(magical girl) remains but the changes are so noticable you might as well call the two time periods different genre
I watched Majokko Megu-chan because I heard good things about it, but when I watched it, I had the same exact thoughts as you. She tricked a family into caring about her and even with her magic, they're still awful.
I'm glad you made this fairly bite sized overview on all the early Mahou shoujo series!! I'm a big fan of Mahou Profile so it's really cool to see someone else's perspective. I might have to take this journey myself someday just to see what these series have to offer. Though I will say as a Go Nagai fan i really wish there was more of Majokko Tickle just cause it looks so fun and pretty different from all the other stuff he's done. Oh well, I guess one is enough for now. Whoops, uh I kinda went off there for a sec, hehe anyways great video!
Chappy, lunlun, sally and mako are fully dubbed in spanish. I used to watch reruns of those shows in the late 80's early 90's as a kid. Mako and lunlun are the best ones IMO
21:58 when I was 7 everyone was either fan of Sailor Moon, Cardcaptors or Rayearth. I was one of the people who liked Super Boink/pig (Tonde Buurin) and then I had this anime. I had it on vhs from my uncle who always brought me a lot of anime and toku from Italy (french and german stuff were included too, also the doctor who movie) I had and still have a major crush on Non Go. 22:52 or as I knew her Noa. She's too damn pretty and the only reason to watch the show.
Rewatching Sakura right now (close to finishing volume 1, UK Anime Limited Bluray), definitely appreciate that she starts the video. Don't feel pressure, I'll be there whenever you make an episode 2.
I didn't watched much sailor moon but I've watched lot's of 80s 90s magic girl Anime still nowdays even I watch any openings from 80s 90s feel like childhood
I'm slightly surprised you didn't mention the later cutie honey adaptations, but I also understand how that would sorta distract from your discussion on the original series. Re cutie honey is a masterpiece imo but the first show is worth checking out for it's color design and soundtrack alone.
Yeah, my intent was more to focus on the series in themselves, if I end up continuing I'd touch on the later installations in each of their respective eras. And yeah, 10/10 ost + color design for sure
I have a complicated relationship with magical girl animes I don't necessarily like them but whenever there is one TV or online I can't resist the urge to watch them even for at least 5 minutes. The two magical girls shows I genuinely liked were doremi and minky momo. I feel a little embarrassed saying this since I'm in my early thirties😅 but I can't help it. These shows are just charming. I forget to mention the precure series, especially the animation. The precure series has some really good fight scenes that even rivals some of the best shonen battle anime ( yeah I said it and I don't regret anything 😤)
All things about this video is truly rejuvenating. Hearing you sing the Himitsu no Akko chan op the only way its meant to solidified this video as a absolute tippy top favorite of mine. Very noice
Loving the music in this video. I recognize some Peanuts as well as Princess Jellyfish music. I did not realize these shows existed. I always thought the birth of the magical girl was in the 80's. With shows like Minky Momo and Creamy Mami. I suppose many of these shows didn't exhibit enough the of the characteristics to be considered by many as truly Magical Girl as we know it? Or the fact they're animated shows from 50~ years ago made in a different country of people who speak a different language from my own.
Awesome video, I’d like to try a few of these at some point. I’ve been meaning to try some magical girl shows since I don’t have much experience with the genre, so thanks for the conveniently structured thoughts on them. Hopefully these can get proper translations at some point.
Torrents, though I'm pretty sure you can find sally on some illegal streaming sites (9anime). It's not like it's licensed or ever will be in the near future.
I hate *HATE* where people call magical girl anime’s “sailor moon rip off” while sailor moon wasn’t the first magical girl anime and sailor moon made the magical girl genre more popular.
The Sally the Witch Subs contain swear words? Oh geez, my Niece won’t be watching the show sadly… Waiting for the revision if the Subs like the Subber mentioned before.
You’re wrong!!! Magical girls were birthed from the old Wonder Woman tv series! ITS A FACT ALL MAHOU SHOUJOS ARE JUST TRYING TO DO THE WANDAH WAMAHN TRANSFORMATION!!
Unpopular opinion: Go Nagai thinks that adding sexuality is edgy AF and like that it is a good adult show/manga. That's what I have seen in many of his shows.
Mmm... I don't think so. "If people say you can’t do something, then you want to do it even more. Things that are considered forbidden, means other people aren’t doing them yet!" - Go Nagai
Thanks for watching! And thank you for 10k!

Something finally giving Sally her due gives me unfathomable joy like you wouldn't believe.
Glad I could do my part o7

Wasn't expecting to find you here.

Yea.
the first precure i saw was Yes Precure 5
I think Mahou Shoujo Lalabel was the last anime of first gen magical girl

Glad I could share!
Another thing to note is that most of the background music in Mahou no Mako-chan is also noticeable in Majokko Megu-chan and Candy Candy.
Interesting!

Guess that's a miss on my part - I had been planning to do a followup on all the Mahou Shoujo from 80s, but got pushed back by other projects
Can't believe the first magical girls show were reverse Isekai
Seriously though it s hard to believe that a genre changed so much in what tropes it uses most: the very core(magical girl) remains but the changes are so noticable you might as well call the two time periods different genre
It's really interesting to see how different they are!
We need Retro Crush or Discotek to Distribute those Ancient Animes in the 60's.
That would be real cool to see
I watched Majokko Megu-chan because I heard good things about it, but when I watched it, I had the same exact thoughts as you. She tricked a family into caring about her and even with her magic, they're still awful.

Also Akko: ua-cam.com/video/5Nikaw5h1cw/v-deo.html
Shingo Araki also worked on the first seasons of 'Inspector Gadget', and 'Heathcliff'.
Holy shit Fushigi na Melmo seems absolutely insane! This was an amazing video man, really fantastic job with this one.
Thanks so much! And yeah, it's quite a wild one, lol

i love your longer videos, documentary stuff on retro anime is very rare so i really appreciate all the hard work you put into this.
Thank you!

Well, lunlun's apparently getting a sort of reboot/sequel in China for some reaspn so I guess it was popular enough there to get one...

yesssss more spotlight to mahou shoujo!!! tysm Kor ☺️
:)
Great video, definitely gonna check out a few of these series. Hope you'll continue through the years and cover some more shows.
Thank you!
Maho shojo are like Care Bears we wished we could've been them and had their powers
haha interesting comparison

Never feel guilty about liking what you like!! ✊✊
@@korisnthere thank you 😊 😊😊😊✊✊✊✊
Oddly enough, it was ErynCerise who led me here.
You forgot to mention that the ED for Majokko Twinkle has freaking Tweety in it
I love Skaro Hunting Society.
I haven't seen Flower Angel in... 25 years? I loved that vhs tape so much.
I loved this video and wanna watch everything 🤩 Thanks!
All things about this video is truly rejuvenating. Hearing you sing the Himitsu no Akko chan op the only way its meant to solidified this video as a absolute tippy top favorite of mine. Very noice

this is the anime video I've been looking for a long time
glad i could deliver

I wish you had more subscribers, you put so much work in your videos and not a lot of people see it.
It makes me glad to see that my effort is appreciated at all
2:21 that's literally me when I watch an magical girl or Shoujo Anime
Congrats on 10K subs! You deserve sooo much more :)
Thank you!

I’ve watched the entire thing I promise. What you mean it came out a minute ago and it’s 30 mins long?
lol
I honestly feel like Candy Candy would be in this catagory shes so sweet and its a very sad anime
She's more of a shoujo show than a magical girl though
So interesting !
Yayyy 32 mins! Congrats on 10k too!
Thank you!
this pleases me
* smooches with steadily increasing intensity *
I like the English OP for Hana no Ko Lunlun.
Hana no Ko Lunlun was found in it's entirety buuuut it's in French, it's subbed in English though!
Your videos get a disappointing amount of views for how well-made they are. Ez subscribe.
Thank you!

So these are the magical girls before Sailor moon?
Love my man Kor
Attack No. ! is from 1969 but ended in 1970, it isn't a 1970s show.
What was the anime shown at 0:20 ????? It looks cool
Princess Tutu
took me a hot sec to realise this is a milk man
How were you able to watch those old ones like sally
Torrents, though I'm pretty sure you can find sally on some illegal streaming sites (9anime). It's not like it's licensed or ever will be in the near future.
Does Kor answer all comments? Seems like he does.
Also, 11:28 LMAO
Indeed I do, haha
Commenting for algorithm, a few minutes into the video.
