People who were too young or not alive in 1996 will never understand how big of a star will Smith was when this came out. He knocked off bad boys, independence day and men in black back to back to back. Him and Jim Carrey were the two biggest stars in the world
That "fire at will" confusion made me tear up with laughter. Just imagining if it played out how Hannah thought at first, everyone just shoots at Will Smith randomly.
There was a cartoon called Talespin that made this joke once. Pirate captain: "Fire at will!" *cue bullets and one guy screaming and running* Pirate captain: *sigh* "Do not fire at Will. He is the second mate. Fire at the Sea Duck!"

I watched this in the theaters on opening weekend. Mind-blowing doesn't even come close to it. The teaser trailer showed the White House being blown up; as soon as you saw that, you _had_ to see the movie. The hype was amazing. Also, the reason why the CGI looks so good is because they used it only when they had to; this was made just before CGI took over as the main method of special effects. A lot of the best stuff was done with what was state-of-the-art miniatures with real explosions. You can find quite a few videos on the making of and behind the scenes of the movie on UA-cam.
A lot of people miss this, and it's no surprise since I think it's just literally one line of spoken dialogue in the beginning of the movie, but the reason why the president can fly a plane is because he was a fighter pilot in the Gulf War.

This movie has special place in my heart because it was one of the few movies that made my childhood enjoyable and made me want to be a filmmaker. Thank you guys for reacting to this movie! Thank you so much.
Really? When I saw it a lot of people groaned out loud and heckled the movie, including me. That shot is when I knew the movie would be a huge disappointment, which is was. Not a single witty or intelligent thing in the entire movie. Good effects, though.
It's the ultimate cheesy fun movie that you can relate with, even if you're not American. I don't think anyone has come even close to this level of "Hollywood" before or after. It's the kind of movie that as you're watching it you scream, cry, laugh and keep quiet exactly at the moments the creators wanted you to, and then it ends and you can easily go about your day thinking "that was a lot of fun!" They rarely manage to replicate that nowadays. The closest thing I think would be some of the MCU films, but they're also hit and miss. Independence Day is special like that, and that's why it's an all time classic.
With one exception. IT's not dumb. It's just a fun popcorn movie. It's got a lot of heart. It's got great effects, great acting, a well paced script, and its endlessly quotable and rewatchable. People add the modifier "dumb" because they're insecure to just genuinely love it. I watch it every 4th. It's my birthday movie. 4th of July 2023, 35 years old, and it was just as great as seeing it in the theater in 96.
@@OpenMawProductions It IS dumb, anyone with a bit of critical thinking can easily see most things in this movie make no logical sense. Being able to fly an alien ship "just because you saw them flying", and infecting the alien ship with virus are just a couple examples of stupid things in this movie. Yeah, it's fun and entertaining, that's all it is.
The best part of the "what is that smell" line, is that the crew snuck a bunch of shrimp from catering that had been left out in the heat into the parachute he was dragging, so his reaction was real.
Close it was brine shrimp. The great salt lake where that scene is filmed is home to brine shrimp and when they die, the bodies sink to the bottom of the lake and decompose when the wind kicks up the bottom mud is exposed and the smell of decaying shrimp caused Will to say that line, Which I think is still hilarious
You guys were the right balance of goofy entertaining and honest reviewing a movie from a film loverʼs perspective. You did not overdo your take on the film and you just enjoyed it-as it should be. I thoroughly loved this movie reaction of yours as I watched every second of it from beginning to end and I liked the video and subscribed. 🎉 You guys were both great! I will be watching more videos of yours from now on. ❤ P.S. Bill Pullmanʼs speech makes things worth fighting for till the very end. 🇺🇲👏🏼
Bill Pullman's speech is one of the greatest in cinema history. It was amazing in the cinema, full of people cheering, and nearly 30 years on, it never fails to move you. Big, chessy, fun, blockbusters don't get much better then this. Classic movie.
I worked at one of the biggest movie theaters in Brookly NY at the time when this came out in 96. It was a 9 or 10 screen theater and 5 of them were dedicated to this movie it's opening weekend and it still sold out every show for nearly the entire week. To say this was one of the biggest movies we had ever seen (up to that point) is an understatement. We even had people buying multiple tickets to multiple shows (and plenty of people sneaking in of course) on the same day. I also remember the "making of" of this movie airing on HBO a few weeks before it came out - the effects and action blew everyone away at the time. And for the most part it still holds up pretty well (the only stuff that really doesn't is the miniature sets they use to blow up the cities, since you can see it's a miniature set etc.) and is still one of the best summer blockbusters ever made imo.
Proving once again why you guys are my absolute favorite reaction couple. I saw this film in the theater and it was huge when it came out. Bill Pullman's speech had the "goose bumps" effect on everybody. My 2nd favorite part of the reaction...37:28. Hannah's face...🤣 My favorite part of the reaction...49:48. FINALLY, somebody gets it and of course it's Hannah! Ever since I started watching movie reactions, it's driven me crazy listening to people trying to "steer" the stories. You're not supposed to steer a rollercoaster. You're just supposed to enjoy the ride. Anyway, bravo guys.
I won a radio contest to see this movie at midnight on opening night. I saw this so many times at the theater. It’s such a popcorn flick and the President’s speech is one of the greatest.
The President's speech brings me to tears every time. You can feel the emotion when he delivers it. One of the best dialogue in cinema history if you ask me!
One of finest examples of an entertaining summer blockbuster, my whole family went to see it, back when we all still went to the movies together. The 90’s were a really magical period in American film history, never to be repeated.
I loved this movie! A combo of sci fi and action! The alien destruction of the cities and White House was amazing looking for its time with the special effects! I liked the relationship between David and his dad, especially when he spoke up for him on the plane letting them know if not for his son, they would all be dead. Russell Casses’s death was a little sad to me, he was crazy and odd but in the end he was right and the last message to his kids got me and of course his ‘hello boys, I’m baaack’ is so iconic! Great reaction!
I firmly believe that the soldiers thought Russell was a screw up and they purposely gave him a malfunctioning plane because they didn't think he'd make it five minutes during the fight. That's why they looked at each other like that when he showed up with the last missile.. no one will ever convince me otherwise. If they had given him a properly working plane he wouldn't have had to die. They basically killed him.
Bro I've just got in into checking your reactions and my God did you strike again😂😂😂 first twilight now this! 37:27 "I'll be like Mr. President..." as he's breathing like that unbuttoning his shit I'm dyinggg!! Both your dynamics are unparalleled in this reaction game man, keep the penetration up lol
Other great disaster movies for you guys to react to - 2012, Day After Tomorrow, San Andreas. The first two are by the same person who directed Independence Day, and San Andreas stars Dwayne Johnson. Strongly recommend all three of these!
I saw this movie opening night July 4th 1996 in Brooklyn, NY. I was 8 years old. They gave out free red, white & blue popcorn, beach balls, and frisbees. The theater was absolute mayhem with people screaming, cheering and crying. greatest cinema experience of my life.
Since the first time i saw this movie , i cried in so many different emotion , especially the speech , that is the best freaking war speech in the whole history of movie 🔥 And everytime i watch the movie again it always got the same vibe of emotion again and again. BEST !!!
Great reaction! Glad you guys enjoyed this one. If you’re interested in another ‘aliens visiting Earth’ movie (albeit a bit more dramatic/serious), you should definitely check out Arrival with Amy Adams. I think Hannah would really like it!
I remember the 4th of July, one year before the release day, our AMC had the movie poster put up in the lobby, with a digital timer counting down from 31,557,600 seconds until the opening night. Most expensive hype I've ever seen for any movie.
Fun fact the man that was alone in the office building while the city is exploding is Volker Engle the man who actually did the special effects for Independence Day and he won an award for it. Considering how well the effects hold up almost three decades later he earned it.
I saw this on the day it came out in L.A. (Westwood, where a lot of movie premieres took place back then because the theatres were larger than most), and because I was someone who could slip away from the office (a few blocks away from the theatre) without being noticed, I bought tickets for about 20 co-workers. It was INSANE seeing it with a very enthusiastic crowd and so many friends before anybody could ruin anything by telling us about it. A perfect "popcorn" movie if ever there was one 😁.
Your channels growing quick man! but you deserve it for putting in that work and sticking with it. Ash and Hannah you guys are hilarious, my favourite reactors by far, keep pumping those reaction videos guys we need our fixes. One love from one of your Aussie subscribers!
Thanks for the reaction. Saw this on the 4th of July during the release, with a huge number of others. It was a military town, so most of the theater was troops or related to them. The theater was so loud with hua's at some parts, and during the speech... the whole theater stood at attention and most saluted and yelled hua or some other stuff at the end of the speech. Probably the best and most fun movie theater experience I've ever had.
Okay first of all, great reaction. second : I am totally in love with these two. their chemistry is so genuine. Really funny and honest reactions through out the movie. just great! Keep it up you two!
I was lucky enough to see this in the theaters on opening weekend. For me, it is _the_ summer blockbuster. It's prime 90s action cheese, and it is so, so watchable. Having the movie come out on the same day that the movie takes place was such a simple, but brilliant bit of marketing. The hype for it was crazy; once you watched the teaser trailer and saw the White House get destroyed, you _had_ to see the movie. 22:21 Will Smith yelling about the smell was actually improvised; they were filming near the Great Salt Lake in Utah, which is the home of a species of brine shrimp. So when the wind picks up, you get a whiff of countless decayed brine shrimp. Similarly, much of Jeff Goldblum's lines were also improvised. While everyone talks about those two, I was more hyped by Dr. Okun; he was played by Brent Spiner, who also played Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
This is one of the funniest ones of Hannah. “You would try! You would send the freshly-baked” idk why I howled at this 😂😂😂 “fire at Will? What?” And “oh my god they’ve got their own pigeons!” 😂😂😂😂
That speech may very well be the best in any movie, of all time. Everyone gets those goosebumps, even folks like me who has heard it a lot of times. The writing there alone makes this movie historic in my opinion.
Saw this in the theaters, the surround sound was INCREDIBLE! And in the lab with the alien, everyone jumped. There was a couple of cheers during the Big Speech, and applause at the end. Part of my Annual Lineup every July 4th, along with Jaws and Hamilton
Saw this in the cinema on a summer holiday with my mum when I was about 11. Sweaty palms and nerves throughout! That speech rung close to Churchill's speech during WW2 - would love you guys to watch Dunkirk.
One of the best movie speeches EVER. I remember when this came out, and I have seen it I don't know how many times, and I'll still watch it if it's on TV. It's just such a great movie.
Hannah - "Yeah, but what if they just want to kill us?" Ashkan - "Still that'd be amazing." Hannah - "Oh yeah. Oh great. Thanks. I'm so glad that you'd just shun me to my death with the aliens."
When she said, "It's an American holiday," I knew you guys would love the President's speech later, claiming that it's a holiday for us all now. I think this is one of the best speeches ever written in cinema. Great video!
Popcorn flick at nearly the peak of the craft. More heart than it may have had with lesser creative hands. So good. Also, your banter between each other makes these movies twice as good. You're both fucking brilliant. Never change!

Best line ever. "There is no penetration here, absolutely no penetration"
Really? Damn...I thought I knew everything there was to know about this movie yet here in 2023, I learn something new! Makes sense...
You guys were both great! I will be watching more videos of yours from now on. ❤
P.S.
Bill Pullmanʼs speech makes things worth fighting for till the very end. 🇺🇲👏🏼
Mate you made our day, love you man ❤️👊🏽
Bill Pullman's speech is one of the greatest in cinema history. It was amazing in the cinema, full of people cheering, and nearly 30 years on, it never fails to move you. Big, chessy, fun, blockbusters don't get much better then this. Classic movie.
That speech will always put tears into my eyes. Re-watched that at least 1000 times.
"FIRE AT WILL" That was hilarious Hanah 😂
This reaction penetrated my soul.
😂😂😂

❤❤
Proving once again why you guys are my absolute favorite reaction couple.
I saw this film in the theater and it was huge when it came out. Bill Pullman's speech had the "goose bumps" effect on everybody.
My 2nd favorite part of the reaction...37:28. Hannah's face...🤣
My favorite part of the reaction...49:48.
Wow I'm so jealous ❤
The President's speech brings me to tears every time. You can feel the emotion when he delivers it. One of the best dialogue in cinema history if you ask me!
One of finest examples of an entertaining summer blockbuster, my whole family went to see it, back when we all still went to the movies together. The 90’s were a really magical period in American film history, never to be repeated.
So happy saw this movie back then on the big screen, what a movie! 🔥
Great movie & reaction brother Ash & sister Hannah!
That Speech by Bill is an absolute banger! 🤘🤘🤘💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥
I saw this movie opening night July 4th 1996 in Brooklyn, NY. I was 8 years old. They gave out free red, white & blue popcorn, beach balls, and frisbees. The theater was absolute mayhem with people screaming, cheering and crying. greatest cinema experience of my life.
Sure bro
Remember how everyone clapped at the speech?
Since the first time i saw this movie , i cried in so many different emotion , especially the speech , that is the best freaking war speech in the whole history of movie 🔥
And everytime i watch the movie again it always got the same vibe of emotion again and again.
BEST !!!
My favorite “reaction” couple! Always a great perspective from Ash!!
Ash trying to convince his girl that the movie is about penetration never failed to make me laugh.
Maybe she was starting to describe their intimacy there 😅😅😅
Soo glad y’all watched this!! Such an awesome movie!! Would give anything for y’all to watch “Friday”!!!!!
Now that is definitely something i'd love to see them watch.
I was there opening night and the whole theatre stood up and applauded at the end of The Speech
Your channels growing quick man! but you deserve it for putting in that work and sticking with it.
Ash and Hannah you guys are hilarious, my favourite reactors by far, keep pumping those reaction videos guys we need our fixes.
One love from one of your Aussie subscribers!
Love you mate ❤️❤️

Hannah's thought process is really precious 😅
Vegan Aliens 😂 29:37
Thanks for the reaction. Saw this on the 4th of July during the release, with a huge number of others. It was a military town, so most of the theater was troops or related to them. The theater was so loud with hua's at some parts, and during the speech... the whole theater stood at attention and most saluted and yelled hua or some other stuff at the end of the speech. Probably the best and most fun movie theater experience I've ever had.
Okay first of all, great reaction. second : I am totally in love with these two. their chemistry is so genuine. Really funny and honest reactions through out the movie. just great! Keep it up you two!
What a BANGING COMMENT!! Mate we really appreciate you ❤️🫡
Ash's reactions penetrated my soul in this one. Nicely done.
@35:53
Great reaction, as always! When Hannah saw Boomer come out of that tunnel, oh man, I fell in love with that smile she gave!
This is one of the funniest ones of Hannah. “You would try! You would send the freshly-baked” idk why I howled at this 😂😂😂
“fire at Will? What?”
And “oh my god they’ve got their own pigeons!” 😂😂😂😂
"Fire at Will"
Blonde moment activated.
Hannah really brings a nice balance to these reactions.
When she gets emotional I get emotional.
That speech may very well be the best in any movie, of all time. Everyone gets those goosebumps, even folks like me who has heard it a lot of times. The writing there alone makes this movie historic in my opinion.
The scene at the end when he says "im back" to save budget they basically used the empire state building again but upside down for the explosion
Saw this in the theaters, the surround sound was INCREDIBLE! And in the lab with the alien, everyone jumped. There was a couple of cheers during the Big Speech, and applause at the end.
Part of my Annual Lineup every July 4th, along with Jaws and Hamilton
Ash's Ace Ventura hairstyle is coming along nicely 😂 great reaction you 2 as always!
Im glad you guys enjoyed the movie i loved the reaction as always much love.
Saw this in the cinema on a summer holiday with my mum when I was about 11. Sweaty palms and nerves throughout!
That speech rung close to Churchill's speech during WW2 - would love you guys to watch Dunkirk.
I was missing you guys SOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH... this is such a good movie. Thanks for this video an AMAZING WAY TO START this week...LOVE YOU GUYS🥰🥰🥰
The President's speech is legendary! The fact he also got into one of the jets to fight along with the others...EPIC!!!
Perfect timing! Happy to enjoy my dinner to this evenings watch along, much love you two! Also that background is bad ass!
You CARE for anyone in this movie... that's why it hit so much in any scene! Well written script!
His speech is so good and gets me pumped up!!
One of the best movie speeches EVER. I remember when this came out, and I have seen it I don't know how many times, and I'll still watch it if it's on TV. It's just such a great movie.
Hannah - "Yeah, but what if they just want to kill us?"
Ashkan - "Still that'd be amazing."
Hannah - "Oh yeah. Oh great. Thanks. I'm so glad that you'd just shun me to my death with the aliens."
You two are something else and so funny! 😂 When your husband said “It takes skill to pee and aim without looking! I showed you!” 😂😂
Y'all should really give the Mummy movies a shot! That's right up your alley 😬
When she said, "It's an American holiday," I knew you guys would love the President's speech later, claiming that it's a holiday for us all now. I think this is one of the best speeches ever written in cinema. Great video!
Penetration was a central theme within this story arch now that Ash points it out I can see it. 🤣
Popcorn flick at nearly the peak of the craft. More heart than it may have had with lesser creative hands. So good. Also, your banter between each other makes these movies twice as good. You're both fucking brilliant. Never change!
I’m not so sure about the penetration theory?!😂 but this movie is just fun and I’ve always enjoyed it!
Her confusion at fire at Will 😂😂😂💜🫂
