For how they're underwater at 25:20, it's pretty simple. Air is lighter than water so it goes up, which is why you see bubbles rise when there's air underwater. When it's in an airtight container like the boat, it can't escape so it just stays there. The unrealistic part is that the air and the woods naturally buoyancy would be pushing up so hard that there's no way two humans would be strong enough to hold the boat underwater; they'd just float to the surface.
You can test it at home. Just put an empty glass underwater with the opening facing down. The inside of the glass will be dry. Tilt it to the side and you'll see bubbles escape.
    Science, bitch.

    • @AdamNisbett
      @AdamNisbett 4 місяці тому +11

It all just depends on how much air and how heavy the boat. The amount of force they’d have to provide to hold the boat down is based on the difference between the weight of the boat and the weight of the water that the boat and air pocket displace.

@@Dusk.EighthLegion really I don't remember anything of the sort when I was watching the mythbusters thing, I mean I feel there have to be A LOT of weight not any amount that would be reasonably realistic. It seems to me that they're forgetting (or maybe don't know) that this is a Disney family movie based on a very popular family ride at Disney parks. There's No way it was going to be too dark, gruesome, or anything like that.
There are plenty of options if you want blood and guts, violence, bad endings, and reality in media about pirates -- who were/are nothing like the romanticized versions in most films and TV shows (like Errol Flynn movies or the One Piece series).

Based on a Disney ride, which was based on elements from old Disney film adaptations of novels from Stevenson and Barrie, and other tales of pirates, which were more fantasy than history. Hannah's right. The sequels bring in more of the "pathos" and darker-scenarios and the first installment of the franchise is more fun and "happy-ending". Plus, I think the reason that Jack Sparrow had a "easy" get away is because Elizabeth, the daughter of the Governor and the beloved of Admiral Norrington, was in cahoots with Will and Jack. She, basically, bought their freedom, at least at that moment. Obviously, Norrington is going to go after Jack 1 day later but for now he's been allowed to escape. Norrington has a grudging respect for Jack and he wants Elizabeth to be happy, at the end of the day. He's a good man.

@@transarang To be fair Penn was so overdue a win at that point (it was his 4th Best Actor nomination), not to mention the fact that the category usually favors actors in a film nominated for Best Picture (which MYSTIC RIVER was nominated for but didn't win thanks to facing the LOTR: RETURN OF THE KING juggernaut (Clint Eastwood would incidentally end up winning Best Director and Best Picture the very next year for MILLION DOLLAR BABY)). The fact that Johnny Depp even got nominated for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN was a huge miracle in and of itself given the genre bias.

One of the reasons I love these movies is because of how well the antagonists are written. I don't even like to consider them "villains" because all of them have so much character and relatability.
Commodore Norrington, objectively speaking, is just a man trying to do his job. He is framed as the foil to the protagonists but is never cruel or malicious. Even when he is beaten he takes it gracefully, accepting his mistake of underestimating Jack at the beginning, and even letting Elizabeth go when he realizes she will not be happy if they marry.
Then at the other end of the spectrum we have Hector Barbossa. It would have been so easy to make him a generic "evil pirate" but instead the writers took the time and effort to really make you understand the cruelty of the curse he has to live with. He may have been a criminal, but he was still human. It always really stuck with me how he had the apple in his hand in his final scene. After all that he had been through, he wanted the first thing he experienced with his regained humanity to be a bite of his favorite fruit. And he valued that one little apple more than all the treasures he had piled under his feet.

Its a good movie but doesnt contribute to the overall story at all. 1-3 are about Will and Elizabeth's love story. 5 was both a continuation and conclusion to that storyline. Number 4 is like a buffer movie that just focusses on Jack. The only thing that actually has an impact is Barbossa losing his leg, but even that happens off-screen and its never again brought up in the sequels. @ericturner4857
Plus it was arguable the weakest villain of the series. I love the actor but Blackbeard was insanely predictable. They went from 3 movies where the villains are crews of unkillable pirates (be it ghost or fish people) to a group of regular humans, only 2 of whom are unkillable. It's a direct downgrade. Alas I still quite like the movie, but only when I watch it on its own. If I'm doing a marathon, I can comfortably skip number 4 without having missed anything important for the 5th.

blockbuster movies back in the early 2000s could still have themes and heart to them as well as being spectacles and funny. Not to say movies like that don't exist anymore but so many big summer blockbuster movies now just feel so soulless.

100% true. He will often do this on short notice and just put on a show. He did this in my city and my friends kid was in the hospital at the time and had a great visit. Jack / Johnny was so considerate of each kid and their needs. I get he's had his fair share of troubles and demons but the guy has a big heart.

  • @elfhchan

Commodore James Norrington's character was a very fair man. Yes he disliked pirates and he wanted nothing else than to see them either hanged or behind bars but in Jack Sparrow's case he saw how able he was, how much he appreciated his crew and his position as Captain and he could sympathise with that. Same thing with Will, he saw how valuable his skills were but most importantly he saw him as the one guy Elizabeth chose, he would do anything for her even let the man who humiliated him run free.
His character is often overlooked in the movies because you have such wonderful people to dote on but James Norrington is a very complex and deep-routed persona, he deserves the praise and Jack Davenport did such a fantastic job portraying him.

BTW ash mythbusters DID do an episode on walking the boat under water and they found that it is possible too breath (air pocket) and walk under water like that with a boat but it's impossible for two men too be able too hold it down with all that air in the boat lifting it bavk too the surface. So that ruled it as BUSTED

I don’t know if this was pointed out somewhere in the comments but here’s another fun fact: when the monkey smiles after Barbossa says “we named the monkey Jack,” it was done purely by chance. The monkey just smiled at random without direction. I doubt it was self aware or it knew to do it without training, but that’s just pure luck that makes the scene even more memorable.

14:22: Air bubbles up to the surface and can easily be trapped. DIY: Just put some napkin at the bottom of a cup, flip it upside down, and push it straight down into a bucket of water (or sink, or tub). Pull it back out and the napkin will be dry. This is why there are air pockets in underwater caves.

I feel like the first one was better because it had a tighter focus. The only paranormal thing was the cursed treasure, so we as an audience knew the rules and could get invested. In the sequels it gets a bit nuts and there are all sorts of different elements getting thrown in every five minutes. They're still fun and a great spectacle, but the first one is the superior film.
