The way they kill the death stalker was cool, but personally I think that Nora flying up into the air with a small joyful laugh as gravity takes her back down to smash the death stalker's stinger into its body was iconic.
Not only iconic, it's a far more interesting and exciting execution of the idea. It's a greater show of teamwork, a superior visual spectacle, and drips with character telling the viewer exactly the kind of person Nora is.
Let me drop a really fun fact. Monty Oum partially drew inspirations for RWBY from Black Rock Shooter. Black Rock Shooter designs were drawn by huke. huke is dealing with the concepts for RWBY: Ice Queendom. Thus it came in full circle.
@@dzonatangavert1408 Monty Oum levels of animation and choreography is still here, living through every single animator that he inspired that make banger animations.
Seeing this all these years later really reminds me how incredibly ahead of its time the choreography was in these seasons. It's honestly the best I've seen. It tells a story for each of its characters in how they move and act under pressure. It's absolutely beautiful. Brought tears to my eyes watching this again. I miss it
Monty Oum was THE BAR, the gold standard, for telling a story through nothing more than action choreography. Everything else was secondary, merely to enrich that experience and the spectacle of each characters skill and personality reflected in purely their motion. His DEAD FANTASY series is a even greater showcase of this - as it simply doesn't have any dialogue at all. We lost a great and very underrated artist with his death. Everything that he did including cuts that were used in volume 3 were brilliant and showed his passion for his craft. That why the shift into Vol 4 and beyond is so noticeable and such a shame for the wasted potential of RWBY.
For me, more than anything, it’s the music. Yeah, the choreography isn’t quite the same but it plays more to the strengths of the 2d medium rather than the 3D, and it was to be expected. But man, the music elevated the fight to another level in the original. The guitar kicking in as the Nevermore slams into the stone, signaling the real start to the fight The slight pause as Nora is launched before a decisive blow to the deathstalker “I couldn’t take it, couldn’t stand another minute” as Ren collapses Another pause right before Ruby’s launched, making it all the more exciting And of course, the ending. “Red like roses” as Ruby drags the beast up a mountain to behead it, and the final cut/slash with the actual blow feels final thanks to the end of the song. I’m cautiously optimistic about Ice Queendom, but I will miss the music from Jeff & Casey. It’s the most iconic part of the show for me, and the reason why this scene is arguably the one I’ve rewatched them most
2D animation can have similar levels of fight choreography and work tho. They really dropped the ball on that one with the new series imo. Then again, they're big boots to fill and the mastermind behind it is gone so I don't think we'll ever see fights that are done quite like that ever again.
@@sarbe6625 2D can, but in general it’s a bit more difficult to get choreography of the caliber that is Monty’s translated into 2D without quite the budget and/or time
@@Skidoodle18 imo, if they didn't have the budget or the time to do something similar in quality to the original. Then they just shouldn't have done anything.
The animation for queendom is really solid but, yes the music carries so many of rwby's fight scenes old and new. The way the music lines up with every action brings chills and really sets the tone.
The magical part of RWBY's early battles was how it was one fluent battle. Even here where two boss battles happened simoultaniously the flow does not break. Then there was also details in the movement, like how Jaune has no idea how to correctly fall, how Nora does crazy things with utter deleight, Blake's super human reflexes, Weiss's elegance in how she moves and so on. The added clumsyness to it all, like Nora accidently knocking Blake off keeps it all grounded and makes the characters seem less like perfect fighters AND the genius behind that leading to both teams ending with their people on each side will always make me chuckle. With the anime being more focused on telling a story, something RWBY has never been good at and was originally not even built around, it losing a good bunch of the charm with its telling of the first seasons. The missing of the soundtracks just adds to that.
The choreography is what really makes the original stand out. Ice Queendom seems to be trying to do something different and play to the strengths of the medium which brings my hopes up.
slightly different story over all as well, what with this nightmare hunter and the new grimm, seems to be following the over all same story beats, stuff that would have happened regardless. but I wonder where it'll go further down the line, its like the butterfly effect atm, the further we get the more changes.
Yeah, the Anime is nice (but different); _nobody_ could do combat choreography like Monty. So, you have to appreciate _Ice Queendom_ for what it is, not what it could (or might) be.
Queendom was rushed for time is how it feels. But that does not make it bad, just feel rushed. Its more a recap not the main story as of these episode.
Yeah original was better, especially with the music. Also the banter between the characters was better during the fight in the original, just fit their character better. R: "Can you make the shot?" W: "Humph, Can I." R: "Can you?" W: "Of course i can!" Followed up with the serious lets do this look.
Atleast The rest of the fight scenes in chapter 1 and Chapter 2 were great. It was only this for me that felt really lacking because of the amount of choreography and team coordination that was missing.
6:51 This sequence alone blows the remake out of the water for me. You can see the passion, fun and choreography work so well with them alone. Vol 1 may have not looked the best but it has the heart that after rewatching it years later I can still laugh and be in awe of this moment.
Agreed. same with 5:16. Very creative to have Blake get knocked off the ledge by Nora being pushed back, then Blake adjusting to the situation and using that as momentum to launch her own attack... and all done so effortlessly, with 0 loss in the flow of the fight. It's def something that the anime hasn't(and prob can't, save for budget) replicate as well.
you're seeing one man's vision that no longer exists, you might as well compare the anime version to the later seasons to see how much that has changed and isn't coming back. Also, the technology limitations are being overlooked for nostalgia. When ruby slides/runs up the mountain shooting in order to continuously accelerate upward, you can barely tell she's doing that without the sound effects, in the anime versions it's visually obvious what Ruby is doing, leaving no question as to what is happening in the scene. There are tons of other examples of this, and what people keep calling choreography in a lot of cases in needless panning shots of characters standing around, that's NOT GOOD, it's time-wasting and again with the technical limitation of the animators in the 3D version most of that looks bad because the technology just wasn't there at the time or they didn't have the funds to make it look say as nice as the 3D animation in most video games. There are pros and cons to both styles, but the anime one seems more consistent with its quality, less wasted scenes, and seems to direct the flow of the viewer better than the original. For example, in the anime version, you can kind of see how Jaune and Ruby come up with their plans by observing their teammates in action. In the original, Jaune just says one thing and Phyrra just goes for it, and it works out, in the anime Jaune recognizes what Ren is doing, then sees the blood from the creature and asks Phyrra to follow up and finish the job, severing the tail. Same with Ruby, you get the impression she's observing her team and their interactions with the bird and then begins formulating a plan, it doesn't come across that way in the original.
@@violet_paladin I thought the humor was pretty good. I always enjoyed the banter between teammates. Of course humor is subjective so sorry you didn't find it entertaining
@@RapTapTap69 I dont know what youre apologizing for, you didnt write those terrible jokes. im not the only one who felt that way in any event. RT has a very distinctive "writing" style and while that works for rvb, it fell flat in rwby. the anime adaptation bringing it into sharp focus how much better it would have been had they stuck to a show dont tell style of dialogue. cuz man do these characters talk and talk and talk in the original-and trying to cram bad jokes in that mountain of words is simply too much.
@@blahthebiste7924 if you think jokes that didnt land and tired anime tropes bordering on highschool cringe are an integral part of rwby-why arent they there anymore? oh, because they were detrimental. so the real question is, how does it feel to have seemingly watched the entire series while asleep?
also, are you just gonna ignore how dogshit the writing is? the show had potential with its characters and setting but the writing is fucking garbage. it takes itself so serious but its a fuckin joke. i just cant see how rwby fans praise this pile of shit so hard when things like one piece exist or monogatari exist. like have you never seen a show with actual world building/storytelling before? its wild to me how delusional you guys are.
@@sci-fiknight8084 Is not the money, is the talent. Don't get me wrong, I love the studio behind this and the good work they put to it, but Monty as a one person behind the whole fight has the talent with the music, he put so many little details to give charm and character to a doble fight! (Pd: sorry for the bad grammar)
@@NighttyDai I have to agree I just didn't want to say it considering the good animation in the anime already. But it needs skill to put that skill into some major fast action just like when Ruby scaled the cliff to cut the Crow's head off.
@@NighttyDai Don't forget SHAFT has limited time to working on RWBY. After that they will work on another project. I can say SHAFT did not put the maximum possible effort to adapting RWBY. They still making Puella Magi franchise. I'm not complain, i just feel if SHAFT can spend one whole year to focusing on RWBY without another project, it can works better than what we get right now.
So much of the energy from the weapons is lost in the anime, and that’s kind of heartbreaking, especially because of how good it looks when it *does* get it right.
Honestly I think one of the main reasons for this is honestly that the sound effects used for the guns is awful. They all sounds like laser blasters so it really doesn't sell the firepower they have.
That is mostly because of how Japanese treat weapons in their culture. We like impactful weapons that are realistic and people's power are tied to the weapons they use (Sylvester Stallone movies for example). Batman comics are a pretty good example of this. For the Japanese, weapons are an extension of personal power. Legend of Zelda is a reliable modern expression of this. The master sword is powered up by your personal achievements and struggles, alongside the skills you build. Yes you have tools like the hookshot but they are only useful when you know how, or when, to use them. The main way you see this here is that the weapons sound effects are not gun shots or real, they have fairy dust or zwapps attached to them depending on the character. The weapons also seem to physically weigh less, like when ruby lands after the decapitation and the blade doesn't shove itself into the ground. The remake doesn't feel as inertialess as this original does during the action sequencing.
There is very little inertia, something Monty knew how to utilize very well and what current RWBY team finally relearn how to as well. In IQ they went with typical shonen animation style, with it's keyframe focus and that works as well. But what kills dynamic fight in IQ for me is the soundtrack. Original RWBY is very meh if you turn of sound - and it's Red like Roses that makes Nevermore fight so good right next to Monty's choreagraphy.
Just my cents, the original one successfully showed that even though they can all fight, they kind of experienced struggle doing teamwork as 2 teams combined. Then eventually, they found their sync when both members of the 2 teams got together respectively (Team RWBY and JNPR). The animated one does have its cool scenes but was not able to story tell that small detail.
I couldnt agree more. They cut some major details here and there which felt lacking. All because it was rush so we could get to the main part of the retelling of the story. Such a shame.
@@iryu7288 volume 4-5 have BAD fight scenes tho the plot was ok,volume 6-8 fight scenes improved a lot(volume 1-2 is still better tho) And the plot went had their ups and downs but overall i still like it, I just hate how they ruined Adam
It really does the new one has better animation and more resources but you just cannot be the original cinematography and choreography. And the soundtrack it's just perfect
I had misgivings about his fight choreography. (Hint: don’t watch the person winning the fight, watch the person losing the fight). Also his characters bounce between hitting like stick of bricks and then jumping like they were light as a feather. His continuity of who is where could get sketchy. But when it came to directing a sequence in terms of shots, angle, viewers’ eye tracking, staging, and especially editing cuts I’ve never seen anyone go balls to the wall as coherently as Monty Oum. It’s like Mad Max fury road on crack. Nora’s smile gets a special nod in this fight for being perfectly timed to the music and injecting the action with some character driven levity.
@@noremac7216 This new one does not have better animation, it has better visual aesthetic. Animation is the movement of characters, not the visual appeal of characters.
never seen the original, but i love the animation of the orange hair girl. they really use the momentum of her heavy calibre gun and it adds a lot of personality to her fight animation
@@Warcodered01 yeah that loses a lot of the charm that the original had. They also skipped the first fight with Sun and Penny. I was looking forward to seeing how they'd handle them and they just skipped them
I would watch the og first then the anime. And honestly as someone who has been watching the original since it first came out, I'm disappointed in the anime.I miss how certain parts of the soundtrack perfectly went into the fights, I also miss Weiss's attitude. At first she was annoying but it's something grew to absolutely love. The og is better 100%
7:32 I cannot believe they cut this one out, like Yang instantly know what the team is up to and get in position is what magical to see, the connection, the teamwork, the different fighting style is what lacking from the new one and it's pretty upsetting to see how much they cut out.
@@Taiyomiko I did ask someone what truth to be told. That’s not what I remember when it happened to the original Rwby series of Monty’s works in the Roosters Teeth because it’s wrong with the fight between the two Grimm but looks at the anime series, and then it’s so big! 😍1:29
yea though the pose of team JNPR was unecessary in the original. Also i liked the pose of team RWBY in the new ver. But i agree 100% the fight in itself was better in the original
I fully agree with everything you said. nothing wrong with Ice queendom, but the music and fight intense moments aren't there. ontop of that when jaune and pyrrha work together in the animation green boy legit just jumps on the tail. in RTs green boy actually shots the tail off. the only one thing that ticks me off was rwby's and Weiss's little snaps at eachother/comic relief for like 2 seconds. and when RWby's gun fires no kick it just pews. Weiss's magic is just there and can be done from distances and no flicking(granted the hilt hold's the dust, felt like they could have done something there. in conclusion though for a continuation or a growth for Rwby's audience it's pretty good and I'm hyped for the other episodes LMAO
Umm I prefer the anime designs, however 3D fight is better and the original OST is a banger. There are some aspects of the original that were lacking however it wasn't really fixed as much as ignored so eh not a big fan, other then being dated graphically it still holds up qualitatively.
I miss the choreography and music of the original, and i’m a sucker for cool fighting choreography so the ice queendom isn’t really it for me, but damn does it look stunning.
@@matthewallen2273 I mean, the choreography would be a different story if a studio like mappa or ufotable got ahold of this project. Shaft is honestly past it's monogatari and madoka days.
@@zackrose6261 There is still some quality stuff with Shaft but we can't deny the studio doesn't even hold a candle to what it used to be. They slowed down their production pipeline by a lot as well. I don't know if they went through a restructuring of sorts but it's clear that they can't produce content at the same level of quality and quantity they used to.
As a huge fan of the Monty Oum style I love how Shaft animated the climax at 3:11 The way they focus on Ruby's execution gives her and her weapon more impact and that smile at the end is priceless! (And Weiss at 3:13 beautiful!) Yet after seeing Monty's style again after so long I can't help but notice the sheer amount of details that was added to the fight. Sure the visuals is a very rough 3d, but seeing the personality of each character shine is pretty damn amazing! That fight choregraphy really proves just how good Monty was! (Also the fight was ngl very messy but that shows how they are skilled fighters but novice hunters/huntresses) So over all I would say Shaft streamlined the fight to be less complicated as it is now in the 2D TV size medium. This allows the animators to emphasize the climax of the fight without being overly burdened. As much as I prefer the old fight choregraphy, I will admit I would do anything to protect the smile at the end 3:34! Not bad Shaft, I just hope they can do the series justice.
Even tho Ice queendom is rly well made, I think I still like the original better. The music, the teamwork, the personality of every individual character... I think these stand out way more in the original.
There are definitely a lot of things I like about the new one but I feel like they cut some pretty important character moments not to mention the soundtrack was kinda boring for this fight In the original scene they were uncoordinated and bumped into each other and just made more mistakes due to not being used to fighting alongside others, they just fought a little to well in the newer version imo and although I like having Nora launch the spear through the Deathstalker I think having her hit the stinger to kill it just made the fight feel a bit more dynamic and creative I hope that if later seasons get adapted that they look at feedback and try not to take away character building like that
Nevermind the fact that Nora also launches the team off the falling bridge with the impact, in a callback to the earlier scene with Jeaune. Monty Oum was a master of the fight scene, and while the animation is prettier, it's lacking a lot of the oomph and kinetic energy of the original.
The original was definitely better in overall choreography, nobody denying that but I applaud the attempt And I really want to see how they handle the human v human fights
I feel the same as I understand not everything could have been replicated. I feel though the anime is lacking with the soundtrack and a bit of the animation.
@@PrincessAnime172 I think the transition from the original does seem weird due to flow of some of the fights. Even characteristics of the characters are different, Yang being a perfect example of this. We will have to see what the last 9 episodes has for us.
@@sligen yeah I especially wanna see how the season 1 ending fight will play since Sun weapon was one of the harder ones they had to animate in the show.

@@nyimakgan Oum being a dancer and director is a talent. No it's not easy even if you have all the resource. If you see the choreo quality, despite being lower budget vol 1-3 is still better than vol 4 above.
@@nyimakgan I think you lost me bro. The animation part is "easy", yes, well subjectively. What I'm talking about is the choreography. 3D art talent is not what I meant. It's your physical talent. Monty Oum was a dancer, he know what's real and not. He can combine facts with fiction to give better impact on the animation. That is called choreography talent Even if you're a dancer, doesn't mean you're a good fight choreographer. That is why Mounty is a talented person. I'm not saying it's impossible, I just hope you don't discredit him too much. Also we were talking about direction. Not 3D animation.
Ummm did ya forget og like horrible and the fights had glitches here and there plus the details were either going super fast like some video games or u can't tell what's happening
I am Japanese and I respect Shaft, a Japanese animation company. However, Ice Queendom reminded me of how great the original was in terms of speed, action, music, and composition, and gave me a chance to look back at the original.
The biggest difference between the two is how much little each individual character gets screentime to show off their abilities in the IC adaptation. Here are some of my biggest observations: 1) Moments that display teamwork are no longer as prevalent. 4:10 when Ren tells Nora to distract the Nevermore, which shows their level of communication. 4:23 where Blake and Weiss help a different squad on instinct, which shows they're well trained to take care of each other. Some may argue this as filler, but considering it's an action-oriented show based around team coordination, missing moments like these changes the story a lot. 2) On the topic of helping other squads, the whole interaction between RWBY and JNPR are basically non-existent in IC. The entire segment of 4:45 was cut, which is really important because these scenes help us measure the abilities and competence level of each character. From this scene alone we can tell Jaune is inexperienced, but people like Nora and Blake help make up for it. 3) The entirety of 6:20 with JNPR's teamwork is so much smoother and more coherent than in IC, especially with Pyrrha's and Nora's combo attack. It's an excellent display of teamwork and it makes sense to use such force to kill that Grimm. It probably has to do with the excessive dialogue that slows the pacing of the fight. 4) RWBY's Nevermore fight also had a lot of detail in the 3D version that IC didn't show. Blake was never given the spotlight by showing off her grappling tricks and aerial combat at 5:20. 7:31 This glimpse that Yang did shows that she knew how to position and knew what they were doing from just looking at her teammates. 7:53 This interaction is also missing, which is honestly disappointing because it shows the dynamic of their cheeky friendship without prolonging the dialogue for too long. However, IC did make up for some of the shortcomings with the teamwork display between Blake and Yang at 2:02, albeit less flashy. Everything from 2:56 was absolutely beautiful and was more well done than the 3D original. Weiss reacting on the spot at 3:03 is an amazing display of teamwork, and it honestly outdid the original by a mile here. There's honestly too many differences that makes the 2D one way too linear and lacks the coherence that the 3D one has. I feel like the storyboarders and animators just watched the OG scene a handful of times, chose which scenes looked cooler, and decided those few scenes deserve more budget. There's also a huge issue with smooth animation suddenly coming to a halt. Like 0:43, 0:58, 1:07, 2:34 all look so jarring compared to scenes like 0:13, 0:40, 1:04, 1:17, 1:25, 1:31, 2:03, 3:00, and the absolutely stunning animation at 3:12. Knowing SHAFT and their history of shoddy animations at certain scenes and then having absolutely stunning visuals literally a scene later, it is to be expected. If IC took more notes from the choreography, camera angles, and nuance from the OG scenes, it would be amazing no doubt. Not saying it's bad right now, but as someone who watched and analyzed the OG scenes the differences in IC are too jarring in a bad way.
I agree, but with how they are taking the story differently in the ic adaptation i hope the reason they rushed through the first three episodes was so that they can show new and exciting stuff in the alternate story line
@@randomradon Yea that could make up for a lot of the shortcomings. The more it differentiates, the less we can compare it to the OG. The only potential issue is that the writers may want to still keep things similar to attract the pre-existing RWBY fandom. I'm really hoping they do more with that nightmare-hunter character, and not just make them another Glenda.
I hope they change everything and continue to balance out all the teams and their member's showings like they have demonstrated in the anime version above. Why would I want to watch the same rehash telling of a story I thought went off the rails after the first 3 seasons?
@@inplane9970 I didnt like how they did Chapter 3 tho. Like the Friendship of Team JNPR felt so empty. Lacking in more communications/interactions. The fact that they were already rendered as close friends during Jaune's dreams baffles me.
My only complaint about Ice Queendom is that we don’t have any of Casey and Jeff’s songs added into it. I don’t know about anyone else but I know personally it was their songs that was really hooked me into RWBY. And to not hear Red Like Roses II in Ice Queendom is an actual crime
Well I mean yeah of course we don’t have any of the original soundtrack those were English songs and this is something coming from overseas they already shown multiple original pieces and it’s my understanding that they’re going to then translate those original pieces
I agree. Without "Red Like Roses" playing, this fight loses A LOT of appeal. The one thing about the importance of music in RWBY is it's mostly intense and manages to tell a story. The anime is only half of what it COULD be if they would just add the original soundtrack
@@wanderinghalo You know there are japanese composers who write anime ost pieces with English lyrics right? Just because a track is in english doesn't mean it can't be in anime, otherwise the entirety of the Bleach and Evangelion ost wouldn't exist.

@@noremac7216 The animation in terms of characters fighting is better on the original aswell though. In the remake there is so many characters standing still and the movement feels stiff sometimes and doesn't have that much impact, while the original just had so much movement and there was always a character moving a ton in every scene and not just looking at eachother.
Watching this again is such a throwback. I remember when RWBY first came out back when I was in high school. So much nostalgia, glad to see a japanese company doing their own twist to it.
Currently, my two biggest gripes with the anime are how stiff the characters move outside of fight scenes and the supersonic pacing of the plot. But, to be honest, this is a million times better than what I had originally anticipated for RT's first real anime project. Studio Shaft is long past its Monogatari and Madoka days, but this really did surprise me how well everything is (generally) animated. And don't even get me started with the writing... that alone is making up for years and years of terrible RWBY plot.
The plot part is on purposex they only wnated to dedicate a small number of episodes to Season 3 before doing their own story so it should be slowing down
The amount of content they're skipping is a monkey's paw. On the one hand, I do think they've made a lot of tiny smart changes to what is there to make it flow better have the dialogue itself be less amateur feeling as scenes drag out and totally losing elements like the bully arc. Even if you also do lose some better moments and inevitably the dock fight scene. Which is why I'm glad from here on out it'll be original territory.
I went into this thinking I was going to like the anime one better but honestly the original proves to be way better mostly cause they had the time to actually animate the whole fight. Idk if it's nostalgia but the old animation is charming and I love the little comedic bits with team JNPR
I imagine that's partly because they had more freedom as an independent production releasing it on their own through Rooster Teeth. But we also have to remember Monty Oum was an absolute genius in fight animation/choreography. He also had Shane Newville, someone nearly as capable as he, assisting with the project. That's hard to top. Everything else though was unquestionably less stellar. Miles and the other guy are middling writers at best and the teams who do everything besides the action, while deserving respect, just weren't as good as Monty and Shane. While the fights hold up well from the original, I hate to say it but everything outside the fights does not. The anime seems to be focusing less on fights and a little more on everything around it, which can be jarring for a lot of RWBY fans, I think. Mainly because I feel like a lot of us came to and stayed with RWBY because of the cool fights with cool weapons and cool powers.
@@JoJoboiWav Looks? Yeah I'll agree on that, but the choreography and dynamism of the characters was better in the original. The Anime looks pretty, but the music is worse and the cinematography of the shots is a downgrade from the original (though by no means bad).

When I look for the anime, I genuinely was so disappointed and confused that they didn't had the original voices in English as a must go in the first place, and I definitely don't like the Japanese version at all, and that has NEVER happened to me, I always prefer japanese version.
I actually like the overall feel of JNPR’s combat in Ice Queendom; though admittedly sluggish, the team dynamic feels more realistic in that Jaune rushes the Death Stalker surprising Nora and Pyrrha, forcing the latter to cover his back while Ren literally jumps to help out with the stinger. Contrast this with the original where they show teamwork beyond that of one meeting, even going so far as to pull team combo with only a literal two word “heads up” by Nora to Pyrrha as she proceeded to ‘rocket’ jump off of an effective stranger’s shield.

To be fair, all of them (except jaune) are highly trained as hunters at this point in the story. Beacon is a finishing school, like a college. They’re only a few semesters from becoming fully fledged freelancers. Hunting grimm is their wheelhouse. And as we see later in the series, the grimm aren’t really the main problem. They’re always a multiplier for already existing/intentionally created conflict or despair.
The original is absolute perfection! The choreography, the dialogue, the comedy, the sound design, THE MUSIC! Nothing against this new show, but there’s no comparison for me.
Save for this fight (cus og rwby is better due to it not being as rushed) I'm really liking the anime right now because the characterisation of the main 4 thus far has showed more than og rwby did in its 1st volume (due to more content they can work with) and the fact that they can put things in chronological order makes it all the worthwhile. Also I like how they show Tai and Weiss's family in the first ep cus it makes the characters seems more rooted in the world. All I can say it's that I'm looking forward to what coming out of Weiss's nightmare
Not really, the amount of characterization the characters have gotten is actually lower. The only one that got more was Weiss which is basically canceled out with the shortening and omission of some scenes . The anime covered 2 of the trailers and vol 1 in an hour, the 2 trailers and the original vol 1 equals up to 2 hours of content. I wouldn't say half the time is necessarily more to work with.
@@frizen9328 I mean quite a bit of volume 1 is practically filler anyway. (I know it technically isn't.) A lot of scenes are either prolonged in a way that doesn't matter or idk the entire bully arc with Jaune and that one guy nobody cares about. I think this season is a bit rushed but so far it is doing a pretty good job as a side story and would even work for people who have never watched the original. It isn't perfect but they are doing a pretty decent job all things considered. I honestly think the thing that makes the original so impactful is the ost. Which I think is why the new version feels a bit off sometimes. I am thankful it looks like the show is going to go mostly new content so we wont have to worry about comparing anymore.
@@frizen9328 And yet we see more of the characters' motives and ideas than we see in all of season 1 of the original series. That just goes to show that they have actual writers this time, and not just people paid to bridge the gap between monty fight scenes lmao
@@kagakai7729 I can't agree with this sentiment. I understand that the anime wants to get to the new stuff ASAP, and assumes that the people who watch this spin off already have prior knowledge of the franchise. But due to that, there is barely any characterization. You say the motives of the characters are clear, okay then what's Yang's motif? She didn't get her trailer in the anime, and the opener didn't involve her a whole lot, so she's just..."an overbearing sister who spoils Ruby alot". How about team JNPR? They completely traded out their characters to set up the future narrative. The meeting between Jaune and Pyrrha was good on the ship, then they just cliff notes the rest, to the point where Jaune's closest friends that was vital in defeating this unique grim were the people he met like... Less than a week ago. Basically, any storylines not involving Ruby and Weiss were cut, trimmed or repurposed. It makes sense why they did this, but to say this resulted in even better writing is just plain BS.
@@kagakai7729 Explain how the anime showed more of the characters motives than the original. The anime was a cliff notes version of vol 1, it did not do anything that vol 1 did not do and only shortened and skipped stuff. Because things are removed and skipped the writing is actually technically worse because for new viewers things just happen and they don't understand why. Also they had Jaune fighting Cardin and using aura before Pyrrha unlocks it for him and Weiss burns down the forest on her own yet blames Ruby, talk about baf writing lol. Team JNPR has no interaction, we don't even know who these people are. Ruby doesn't talk with Jaune, Pyrrha barely talks to Jaune, there's less team rwby interaction, Weiss getting over Blake being a faunus makes even less sense. Not to mention all the character acting and charm is removed, a big part of understanding rwbys characters was body language that used to be animated but now it's just still frames with lip flaps. I get Rwby was a waste of potential and became dissapointing but let's not act like this improved anything just because it was made by Japanese people.
Seems decent, i like the look of the characters a lot more in queendom. my main issues are with visual storytelling, in the anime its minimal while in the original you learn so much about the world just through the choices in scene. Example; in Queendom JNPR kill the scorpion grim. In the original they are unable to kill it and so have to smash its own tail into its head before ejecting it off of the cliff to kill it because they and their weapons just arent strong enough. Furthermore at the end of the fight in Queendom Nora runs over and asks if Ren is ok but thats about it. In the original Ren falls to the floor due to the damage sustained in combat clearly unable to continue whereas Pyra lands in a hero pose clearly barely breaking a sweat. its forshadowing telling us that Pyra is really much much more skilled than the people around her. Also no Jeff and Casey is sad. Ill check out the full Queendom though since I do love RWBY and I did still very much enjoy both versions of the fight.
We actually already knew Pyrrha was better than everyone else from the locker room scene, Weiss states she won a tournament 3 years in a row, even if we don't know the opponents the concept of winning a tournament multiple times already displays that she is incredibly skilled
@@python1972 When writing the biggest piece of advice you get told is "show don't tell." its one thing to say "Hey this character is a bit of a badass" and quite another to show that character being a badass. Furthermore, the way building characters and plot points work is you take a concept or idea then consistently scatter in evidence of that thing. an example of this would be Qrow's semblance, the first scene with Qrow *shows* him talking to a bartender who then accidentally knocks a glass off of the bar, then throughout our interactions with him we see evidence of his semblance. So when you get *told* what it is, you think "oh yeah that makes a lot of sense." This is an example of story telling done well, and is a part of the reason the character is so loved. Sorry long reply, I hope that clarified what i meant, im kind of a nerd. :)
@@python1972 Guy above me is right, when you show instead of telling your story becomes much richer and interesting, just saying "oh she's the best among us" but when fighting they all perform more or less the same it's just lazy writting
@@JustinBieberFailz You can see this, even more, when Jaune and Pyrrha block the Deathstalker's claws, both of them use their shields, and when Pyrrha blocks, she immediately counters and hits it, and when Jaune blocks, he doesn't, and Pyrrha then moves over and counters for him. This both shows that Jaune is weaker than everyone else around him and that Pyrrha is strong enough compared to everyone else that she can compensate for it. At the same time throughout the entire fight, Jaune was completely willing to go straight for the Deathstalker and help despite his weakness with Pyrrha as partners. All show, no tell
@@ari_dexel4288This shows only that she is stronger than Jaune, which is not very impressive on account of Jaune being a bit shit. :P Im not saying the anime is horrible, they do some things well, my point is that the original had a lot more of these sorts of things shown in the animation while Queendom seems to not have. That being said i do still like it.
I know they tried new things in the anime, but man the original is just too good Even outside of the main fighting sequences, everything flows so perfectly: 3:52 - Love how they introduce the scene 5:17 - I know many people are obsessed with this transition 5:53 - Uses a perfect opportunity to showcase each character's unique combat style with how they climb up 6:07 - When Red Like Roses finally comes on exactly when we can see Ruby's idea begins forming in her mind... perfection 8:26 - The back pan and showing JNPR's reaction is so good, as well as showing Ruby looking down the massive cliff Or 1:22 vs 6:39 when Jaune takes command. In the original it feels really fast... his leadership and their team synergy is clear because it happens like instinct. And we feel hyped because it fits with the music and doesn't slow down the pace of the scene. The anime version feels so slow, like the deathstalker is just standing there waiting for them 7:32/7:42 - The OG makes it seem like each character is tagging in. The anime tried to do that at 2:05, but they tossed it away with 2:22 Imo RWBY as an anime doesn't really stand out as an anime, but OG RWBY was one-of-a-kind
They are both so perfect I'm crying. A bit sad tho that they took out the moment when Pyrrha throws Nora up to nail the Grim because that really showed how those two energies went together.
how is the anime one perfect the original is brimming with personality, the anime version is boring and generic they didn't even follow the fight as intended
@@jolteonthecat I think an issue is that they didn't give attention to comedy mix with epicness which original did. Nora not being an energetic lunatic just ain't Nora at all. Like it cuz that despite original rwby going downhill in story direction Nora was always likable regardless. Improving story telling and making it take a new route is fine but sacrificing character quality that doesn't reflect the source material can easily go wrong especially in this case.
I like what the new one is doing. It's honoring the original while being its own thing. It's not better.... The choreography of the original is simply unmatched. But if it's breathing life back into RWBY I ain't gonna complain. Let's just pray Volumes 4 and onward for the new show doesn't completely undermine the point of the series like they did with the original.
Concidering the newest volumes of the RWBY don't do much better with regards of the choreography, the remake just don't have the budget to do a bombastic high octane battle sequence, pretty sure the story boarderds where just comfabulated with how they intended to translate *that* into anime medium.
@@joseroa5243 there are ways to do it. It’s a daunting task considering how fast paced and unique the action of the original was. But, there are lots of inspiration to draw from when it comes to fast-paced, high-intensity action from other anime such as Demon Slayer, BNHA, One Punch Man, FMA: Brotherhood, etc. Edit: But yeah, budget does play a factor like you said.
@@DKC196 those are budget cost great battles, and no near close to RWBY Golden era, this was 5 min non stop-location changing- high octane combat. It'd need movie budget for that.
@@montyl.8232That really does highlight the better writing in this series. And before anyone says “thats not exactly a high bar”, while yes allot of the canon content is rushed, they still make use of what they have by still making the characters feel more fleshed out. I was majorly pissed that they literally cut the entire dock fight at the end of volume 1, but hey some other stuff like the Jaune arc and Cardin and his goons picking on Velvet were removed too. Its almost like those parts were stupid and they were right to cut them. It really is telling how much this show is being held by actual competent writers.
I think this is a perfect demonstration of just how good Monty Oum was, and how ahead of his time. the Ice Queendom version does a great job feeling fast, cool and energetic, but the OG clearly shows such a logical progression of events at the same time. How characters have to deal w/ accidents and improvise off each other.
Animation-wise, I already expected the combat to be completely different. Monty's work with the 3D is not something you can just emulate with 2D drawings. They're very different processes. I'm not even really talking about technical stuff. But the creative process. E.g. how Monty puts so much into choreography and fighting styles, which benefits greatly from 3D animation where the models are on the ready, you just have to move the rigs. You literally don't have to worry about drawing a character wrong since it's a fixed 3D model. You can instead focus on movement, which Monty was a genius at. Unfortunately, we really can't expect the same from the anime studio. The anime style shines in a different aspects. Like making a short sequence of moves look breathtakingly cool and gorgeous- it can be just one punch but it can be the most epic punch you'll ever see. Like, the original RWBY animation beats the anime adaptation in every fight choreography (so far) but the sequence starting at 3:12 is better than the original. And it's not surprising that the quality of animation is inconsistent. Everybody who watches a lot of anime knows this already. Both types of animation (2D vs 3D) are very different in how they're made, and different in their strengths and weaknesses. And it's unfair to treat a 2D drawing that can only be used is a single frame like it's a fully-rigged 3D model that can be used for an entire sequence, let alone an entire show. With that in mind, let's try to critique better. Or at least more justly. And to be fair, Monty only worked on the cool fight scenes too. And the rest of the show's animation was pretty stiff or just meh. Sometimes even plain walking animations looked janky. But look at the bright side, if this is the kind of animation we see past Volume 3, then it's probably going to be better than the original in general. If it makes it that far I mean. It's kind of ironic seeing people like the 3D better than the 2D. I know it's not the same context. But still... What a weird change of pace. Haha
Honestly I personally loved season 1 for it's choreography and the way they managed to really show everyone's charactertraits in just one fight. For example Yangs thrill seeking personality at the start as she jumps into the nethermores beak. The little quip between Weiss and Ruby was well placed to show they still aren't completely on the same page. I also like the way they made jaunes orders quick but understood. He didn't even need to mention to Pierra what exactly he wanted her to do. It's just a nice detail. Looking back I kinda miss the style of season 1. Ice Queendom felt a little bit rushed to me, cramming RWBY season 1 plus some more new plot into 3 episodes. In this fight scene I think they should have given just a little more time after they beat the nethermore as the appearance of the new character with the foreshadowing line kinda takes away from the feeling of triumph after watching them win the fight. Despite all this I think the anime is worth watching tho, it does add to the characters stories at some points so that's nice. I'm curious what they have planned to justify rushing through the start.
I think there’s potential in this. Sure the pacing needs some work and I would’ve like to see a little bit more of the original series but I say this was good
I believe, and I'm not sure if it just hasn't come across in other peoples' comments and reviews, but this, to me, is in a rushed and compressed state to be a form of expansionist recap. Something the studio needed to do to get their audience up to speed before they could get to their own original work. Again to me, it felt like the former half of episode 3 when the focus is on the new plot, things appear to begin gaining their stride much more fluidly than the recap. If an entire season was dedicated to remastering V1 instead of 2.5 episodes, then I feel the pacing would have been near if not basically perfect. Alas, that was not fated to be. We still get a new story though which is enough for me.
@@aidankeys8534 yes that is correct, it was stated by Roosterteeth previously as well that the first few eps are just recaps and the original story and new plot takes place between volumes 2-3
Nah, it was awful. And more than that, it was disappointing. I expected WAY more from an all-star team like the one behind this animation. All that potential you mention, it is clear it is getting WASTED.
For me so far the grims in the old RWBY feels and looks more intimidating. Idk why but but the ones in Ice Queendom didn't feel very threatening. I think the old music has a part of why it feels different. I also think the big grim bird was bigger in the older rwby or it looks that way which also helped make it feel more intimidating and cooler. The fight was pretty cool but lacked the feeling of danger in it and the grims were taken down so easily, there was no tension in this big boss battle.
Honestly the bird thing is an issue in RWBY I noticed after a while, size consistency didn't really exist for the Grim until like Vol 5, Ursa are either 4mt tall or normal bear size, Nevermores are either normal birds or the size of the one in this fight, Beowolfs are normal human size or over 2 mt tall, it's all over the place.
@@grayfulbester I think that's because they have a range. Though the nevermore and the smaller ones do have different names. Nevermores are the big ones and nevermore chicks are the small ones.
The original had more darker Grimm and a color contrast from white to black, so they pretty much stand out from the rest of the environment, and more sharper edge. Hence they were quite intimidating,
I wish they kept the little banter between Ruby and Weiss before the slingshot launch. Though I don't particularly mind the way they took it in Ice Queendom
The sequences of Queendom were easier to follow, and I like some of the extra effects at the end of the Nevermore fight in Queendom, but the original had a little more flavor overall with the choreography and had the better backing track. Overall, the original fight is better, but the Queendom fight didn't disappoint.
I find the sequences in Queendom _harder_ to follow. The camera was way more chaotic and never really lets you follow the action scene in a wider/continuous shot. Too many discontinuous cuts where characters jump around. The original is like Jackie Chan movies, you can always follow the action.
I've got two moments I wish were changed. Other than putting the music back in because god it brought everything to the original scene. One, the stinger landing on the head and Nora following up with slamming it down and killing it with its own weapon? Iconic. Like yeah it's cool she smashed Pyrrha's spear through the thing to dissolve it and that's cool, but I always loved that little detail of Pyrrha's experience showing in how she grabs her spear midair when the scorpion is falling and all of them turning to watch RWBY fight the Nevermore. Two, it's that little floating bit between Ruby getting slingshotted and making it to the Nevermore. It's such a small detail, but I loved how she originally used her scythe gun to rocket her way through the air and trying to add in those extra glyphs with Weiss before making it to the cliffside slowed the scene and messed with the flow, you feel? Like idk, the way she floated up felt off and it felt even more off because the next moment was so beautifully animated. But but but. That being said, the cliffside was so goddamn beautiful and they did exactly what I wish could have been done in the OG, and that was the expression and slight exaggeration on Ruby's face in that momentary closeup. Like fuck man, it's such a clichéd moment in these sorts of things, but goddamn do I love those scenes. So much.
the artstyle of the remake is pretty good, but the character movements just feel so... stiff. Their weapons fire but theres 0 recoil in the remake, meanwhile in the original you can see everyone who fires a gun has some sort of kick (aside from Yang, but she's essentially throwing her punches against the force of her recoil, so it makes sense hers isn't showing as much.) which makes the scene feel more alive in a sense. The character move *with* their weapons, not their weapons moving with them. Even when they're in the background (Ruby behind Jaune 4:49 and Pyrrha standing with Ren 4:53 as the example) have kickback whilst behind the others in the shot, but in the remake nobody has any sort of recoil or movement when it comes to utilizing a ranged function. Weiss doesn't perform very many hand movements or position changes, she just holds her rapier out straight. Ruby's _sniper rifle_ doesn't move at all, Nora is the only one who seems to consistently have _some_ recoil with her grenade launcher.
From what I've read, Japanese people don't have the sound quality or files for proper guns. They only use sounds from old movies or fantasy ones like chimes and whistles. 😂 Which is weird because we have shows like Tanya the Evil and Jormungand that have all the sounds and kick we'd need.
This is one of the problems i have with the anime. Ruby's fighting style is built around Crescent Rose's recoil, for mobility and to enhance the scythe attacks. Here we get a few to help decapitate the nevermore and i think a couple on the landing into the forest and thats really it.
The original one was still epic by several times. The fighting choreography and angles were top tier. Still, it was nice to see this as an official anime
The hand-drawn is good, but original hits way harder. The cuts and pacing feel like a really intense battle. From the way the orders are barked and acknowledged, to the small moments of clumsiness in their team work, Monty Om had a real attention to detail that couldn't be replicated. Even the music sync's so well with the action, despite many people not liking the music of RWBY, that it feels almost like an old school AMV.
There's only one anime director that could match Monty's energy. I know it, you know it, we all know it: Hiroyuki Imaishi. A RWBY Trigger anime is the dream.
Gurren Lagann and Kill La Kill right? Let's see: Over the top action Awkward, dorky humor Some super energenic characters Music is important Yes RWBY would fit right in :D
Artwork, amazing. More story on side characters, amazing. Removing random fluff from the original show, good call. BUT REMOVING BLAKE AND SUN VS TORCHWICK?! Why?! I wanna see GUNCHUCKS! I know Ice Queendom is focused on Weiss so I understand why they’re moving at the pace they are to add new content. I’m liking the direction and excited to see what they do next!
It sucks that they skipped the gunchucks, but thinking realistically, what could they do? There’s a reason RWBY was originally made in 3D, and that’s because it’s nigh-impossible to create the frenetic and extremely detailed choreography that defined the early show with 2D animation. Without a significantly larger budget and team working, the best we could’ve gotten for that fight would’ve been a cheap imitation.
While I wish they added the Blake and Sun vs Torchwick fight, considering the fact that Sun's weapons were already hard to animate in 3-d, unfortunately I'm not sure what they could've done to do the fight justice in 2-d
Ruby's landing at the top in Queendom is perfect. If RT contacted Kyoto Animation instead, we would still have the same quality of fight scenes in Queendom.
Honestly...both are turly amazing. I like change that Icequeen is doing. Staying true to the source, but putting their own take on ti. Really hope this series does well.
Love how they drew the beauty of each character. The camera taking in their expressions to tell what they are thinking [Jaune's expression for the stinger for example] is great and I love it. Not to mention they captured each characters personality quite well from the original, especially putting that cute sound effect for Nora to show her "cuteness" to the audience, not bad. For some reason, Weiss's magic circle is better than the original to me. I believe it's how they displayed it with specific/more audio of its usage by this scene alone. Impact speed to display quick movement and too long for scenes seem to rub me the wrong way. In summary, scene speed. Take the final scene [anime version] for the "Impact Speed" when Ruby was launched at the crow grimm, when the crow escaped the ice prison, Weiss made the decision to quickly alter Ruby's initial projectile upwards. Ruby is already launched with great speed, but when she made contact with Weiss's magic circle [sorry, forgot what it's called], the animation movement slowed and doesn't give the "impact" of how fast Ruby is being shot. Too long scene example: Pyrrha's launching of her shield to detach the stinger took too long in my opinion. They are in a dire situation, and most would not argue with me that Pyrrha is a good fighter [facts from original Rwby], so they should show off her speed for quick judgement, weapon handling or following of orders.
i love the new one but its missing some of the action that was in the original unless they choose not to put in all the action that was in the original but it seems like they change some stuff that was in the original though the animation is really good
This really reminds me how I love RWBY for the way it broke convention with action. The fight is messy but fluid in a way that shows everyone is trained but still learning. Some of the all time greatest choreography I’ve seen. I especially loved Nora’s brutal and self assured style which is lost a quite a bit in the 2D which is kinda disappointing, since I hadn’t really seen a lot of girls portrayed that way. But man they nailed the final hit against the bird thingy - I couldn’t look away!
The remake is incredible art wise and and really nails each scene in its own way, but personally I prefer the original on there take and the absolute BANGER thats playing.
It’s looking good so far, obviously it wasn’t going to top the over the top action of the original but it could definitely benefit from the original music
My main problem is it seems to lack a lot of weight and clarity. A lot of the shots kind of go off model until you get the “final shot” where everyone is super detailed. It a really weird effect.
Same thought. Action wise. og. But if youre in it for the story? Well new one. I really dont know how I feel yet. I just know. My friends can now watch it the way they want it. Not Janky looking animation with great quality. But in 2d style. I hate it that they say "The animstion in the OG is shit (lets be real it can be at times)." But their taste.
5:19 Can we talk about how cool Blake is here? Like this is so badass and underappreciated imo. Also, I miss when Ruby's Crescent Rose was a bolt-action rifle and Yang's gauntlets were like pump-action shotguns. The reload animations and chambering the next round are such nice additions! (Rule of cool!)
Ice Queendom definitely looks good, but the coreography in the original is just cooler. Like the broken bridge, how Jaune and Nora get across the gap, or the nailing with how Nora launches off the shield and then rockets down with glee. It's just super cool action for the sake of looking awesome and I love it
While I personally think the original scene has better coreography and cinematography, the animators are doing such a good job on the new series that I'm willing to accept the changes
The anime version is really good and I'm glad a lot more people get to know Monty Oum's master piece, but they really toned it down on the action parts along with some of the dramatic slow mo scenes and wide shots
I will say this, a lot of anime are this, its to save frames. Most characters talking are just them standing still with two to four frames of mouth flaps. I've seen a lot of anime, and if there wasn't a comparison to make, it's a good scene. The frames are saved for action sequences to make them look epic. As this was a mere recreation, they didn't splurge. Or maybe the budget for frames went towards Ruby's fight with Roman before getting admitted to Beacon. (trailer suggests so). Maybe we'll get an intense fight scene down the line. The Nevermore + Deathstlalker fight wasn't accurate to the OG and even the deathstalker fight was epic in OG but the lack of intensity with the anime, was let down.
People here have no idea how 2d and 3d works and outright come with the conclusion that original was better. Drawing each and every frame consistently requires more time and effort than rendering your 3d frames. Heck you can do a 120fps for the original one. That's not humanly possible for 2d anime, but I think it has its own charm with creativity in action sequences, which 3d will always lack. That smearing of airline to give a feel of fast motion, or the movement of hair, everything takes time and talent to make look good. As an anime watcher, the original lacks detailing in art style, expressions, coloring, though the 3d motion is fluid. Thankfully Shaft is doing the project, otherwise the results would have been worse, because no big studio would take a project like this, since the potential of earning money is low. Also, any small studio isn't simply capable of doing such detailed animation.
@@SahilKumar-zp8fx You seem to have missed the part where the original started off as being low budget. Since you are just an "Anime Watcher" then clearly, you wouldnt completely understand the initial core or what made RWBY popular to begin with. Which was its fighting choreography. And that is what the Remake is lacking.
@@SahilKumar-zp8fx Also i wanted to clarify that it was mainly the budget which made the Original felt clunky. Naturally there are flaws between 2d and 3d ways of animation but thats not the point here.
@@fe723 What? People are comparing and complaining at the same time with this And seriously, 2d and 3d has really big differences in budget uses, there are pros and cons in both 2d and 3d Btw the choreography looks stunning and I really don’t know how much more you want with this
I fully agree with everything you said. nothing wrong with Ice queendom, but the music and fight intense moments aren't there. ontop of that when jaune and pyrrha work together in the animation green boy legit just jumps on the tail. in RTs green boy actually shots the tail off. the only one thing that ticks me off was rwby's and Weiss's little snaps at eachother/comic relief for like 2 seconds. and when RWby's gun fires no kick it just pews. Weiss's magic is just there and can be done from distances and no flicking(granted the hilt hold's the dust, felt like they could have done something there. in conclusion though for a continuation or a growth for Rwby's audience it's pretty good and I'm hyped for the other episodes LMAO
I know Ice Queendom has to cut a lot for time, because the japanese still somehow believe they need to do things in 12 TV slot episodes, but the longer Monty scene comes off to me as much better (although the in-battle dialogue was largely improved upon in Queendom)
I think this interpretation lacks a certain intensity without monty’s stellar fight choreography, but I love some of the small character changes they make, like making Jean an actually competent leader rather than the butt of every joke.
I felt like it was shown that he was a competent leader in the original. I'm pretty sure this is why he ended up team leader when the obvious choice without that aspect is Pyrhha. This particular fight is where you really start to see that. He just lacked confidence in the first few volumes. Something Pyrhha was able to give him.
I love the added storytelling details in the anime! They actually gave Jaune a good voice actor and a purpose--being an initiator instead of the clumsy character. He actually commanded real moves instead of just shouting names and expecting them to know what to do. It actually seemed like the takedown was HIS idea. Not to mention the exchange between Ruby and Weiss before the slingshot. Waaaay more meaningful than the comedy. They developed a justifiable allyship, but then again, they skipped the White Rose scene in the anime, so they had to make up for that. Storytelling wise, the anime wins for me, and pays a great tribute to Monty's animation, which I appreciate greatly. The original's choreography and music wins for me as well, but I'll never get tired of bashing on the writers for doing their job badly. Overall, I'd rather balanced strengths than dominant powers trying to distract the audience from bad writing.
The animation is so all over the place to me 😅 Sometimes it looks like a decent or good fan animation, while other times its 4K Ray traced demon slayer levels of animation. I also miss the music. Oh and I also didn't like how rushed the story Is feeling. In the original series we got to interact with these characters individually with Ruby meeting then, and then we'd see them all meet in the slumber party thing. In this it's just...BAM y'all on a ship, speak to each other. We still figure out the white fang, schnee dust, and the outlier Ruby and stuff, but it felt a little unnatural to me. Also I do really like having Ruby and Yang's dad be here and interacting with Oz and stuff. I did think that was cool. Overall though it's fine. I miss the goofyness of the original, not saying there isn't any humor, and I also miss the music. Also who the hell is this nightmare hunting chick? PS. I do have to admit though, I cried from happiness seeing RWBY finally be a proper anime now. I always personally thought that RWBY was always an anime even if it was 3D. But now...ah I was crying tears of joy seeing how far my favorite show has come in the past 10 years 😭
Very much love the animation most of the time, feels a lot better than the early volumes' overall animation even at its worst. Very much love the extra scenes here and there, especially the ones with Taiyang and Weiss' family. I don't care for the new Huntress or the new Grimm type...I don't really like the idea of "possession" in general but it also feels like they were trying to tie a bunch of problems the teams have early on into them literally being harassed mentally by Grimm? I don't like that the unique soundtrack RWBY already has that are made to fit with each scene simply aren't there, but it isn't an extremely big deal to me. I absolutely hate that they cut out a ton of stuff. And I mean a TON, though I suppose most of it is little stuff. Unless I'm remembering wrong, which is possible. From start to finish, from what I can remember; Some of the little quips Ruby has during the Dust store robbery, Glenda and Cinder having a bit of a show of power while Cinder and Roman are trying to escape (they just escape), Ruby gushing over Glenda being a Huntress, a good chunk of Glenda scolding Ruby, Ruby already knowing who Ozpin is and introducing herself (they kinda do this but not really), a few of the interactions at the school such as the Dust explosion (they instead opted to rush into the forest...which is okay I guess but really rushes the setup for Ruby and Weiss' quarreling), the majority of the landing strategies joke (as far as I know, Pyrrha decides to attack Jaune here), Nora and Ren fighting off the King Taijitu, Yang realizing the Ursa wasn't Ruby, all of the tale end of the volume being squeezed into 1 day, THE WHOLE END OF THE VOLUME FIGHT WITH ROMAN, etc. Oh, and things like Ruby hand-crafting her weapon and learning how to wield it from Qrow. I'm sure I'm missing a ton of other stuff too. I really like what they're trying to do. I really want to like this. But the original volume was almost 2 hours long and spread over 16 episodes. This is barely an hour long and spread over 3. I could maybe forgive this all if they fixed the problems the original series had; poor worldbuilding and awkward writing during crucial moments, to name a couple. So far though the only points I think they've improved on is in the portion mimicking the Trailers, they completely forgot to do Yang's part. I honestly think that overall, if you want the better RWBY story then switch over to Volume 1 around ~14 minutes in. But if you want the better RWBY visuals then keep on watching.

I love Ice Queendom, it's s great so far
I'm sorry I prefer original.
The way they kill the death stalker was cool, but personally I think that Nora flying up into the air with a small joyful laugh as gravity takes her back down to smash the death stalker's stinger into its body was iconic.
I thought the same thing, Nora looked so damn happy. Brought a smile to my face.
Yes
I'm the same. felt like they cut some things just to not do it
Not only iconic, it's a far more interesting and exciting execution of the idea. It's a greater show of teamwork, a superior visual spectacle, and drips with character telling the viewer exactly the kind of person Nora is.
Yea the fact that they replaced it with a sluggish, slow motion strike is a bit lame. It really doesnt do JNPR justice.
Let me drop a really fun fact. Monty Oum partially drew inspirations for RWBY from Black Rock Shooter. Black Rock Shooter designs were drawn by huke. huke is dealing with the concepts for RWBY: Ice Queendom. Thus it came in full circle.
Tears to my eyes man
Doesn't matter. Monty Oum grade choreography is still lost.
So that’s why we saw black rock shooter in the first episode
@@dzonatangavert1408 Monty Oum levels of animation and choreography is still here, living through every single animator that he inspired that make banger animations.
@@STN4D
Darn shame its not living on the screen though.
Bruh, this animation doesn't hold a candle to what Monty did
The original scene has some flaws, but so many things are missing that Monty added
It was montys story and his project, and after he died, rooster teeth did a squat and took a hot smelly shit all over his legacy.
5:50 definitely shows the difference in choreography. The anime is so generic and lame lol
For me, more than anything, it’s the music. Yeah, the choreography isn’t quite the same but it plays more to the strengths of the 2d medium rather than the 3D, and it was to be expected. But man, the music elevated the fight to another level in the original.
The guitar kicking in as the Nevermore slams into the stone, signaling the real start to the fight
The slight pause as Nora is launched before a decisive blow to the deathstalker
“I couldn’t take it, couldn’t stand another minute” as Ren collapses
Another pause right before Ruby’s launched, making it all the more exciting
And of course, the ending.
@@sarbe6625 That’s absolutely fair. We’ll just have to see how things pan out
The magical part of RWBY's early battles was how it was one fluent battle.
The missing of the soundtracks just adds to that.
yup fully agree, you nailed it
Yes cutting the red like roses sound track really really hurts the anime
Is the soundtrack not somehow copyright restricted to them? I've heard some say that...
@@fatitankeris6327 Are you telling me that Rooster Teeth does not allow their music to be played in an anime adaptation of their own main product?
@@GameBreaker1055 rooster teeth barely remembers this anime exists do you think they’d care enough to give them the song?

To be fair, Monty Oum was irreplaceable with his coreography to this show
6:51 THIS. How could that take this out?! This is one of Nora's most ICONIC moments...
So they don’t accuse them of just copying the original?
XD
Atleast The rest of the fight scenes in chapter 1 and Chapter 2 were great.
It was only this for me that felt really lacking because of the amount of choreography and team coordination that was missing.

6:51 This sequence alone blows the remake out of the water for me. You can see the passion, fun and choreography work so well with them alone. Vol 1 may have not looked the best but it has the heart that after rewatching it years later I can still laugh and be in awe of this moment.
Bro cgi suck
Agreed. same with 5:16.
Exactly, I don’t feel much passion in the anime project compared to the original
Truth
you're seeing one man's vision that no longer exists, you might as well compare the anime version to the later seasons to see how much that has changed and isn't coming back.
It's a shame they removed the
"Can you make the shot? Huh can I? Can you? Of course I can!"

Monty was simply a genius. It's been years, and people still can't top his work

@@Derenyx
Yeah. And all the kickback that seasons 1-3 were great at: absolutely gone.
Monty was just good like that. At least the fight animation still looks great when it needs to be.

I had misgivings about his fight choreography. (Hint: don’t watch the person winning the fight, watch the person losing the fight).

As a huge fan of the Monty Oum style I love how Shaft animated the climax at 3:11 The way they focus on Ruby's execution gives her and her weapon more impact and that smile at the end is priceless! (And Weiss at 3:13 beautiful!)
Yet after seeing Monty's style again after so long I can't help but notice the sheer amount of details that was added to the fight. Sure the visuals is a very rough 3d, but seeing the personality of each character shine is pretty damn amazing! That fight choregraphy really proves just how good Monty was! (Also the fight was ngl very messy but that shows how they are skilled fighters but novice hunters/huntresses)
So over all I would say Shaft streamlined the fight to be less complicated as it is now in the 2D TV size medium. This allows the animators to emphasize the climax of the fight without being overly burdened. As much as I prefer the old fight choregraphy, I will admit I would do anything to protect the smile at the end 3:34! Not bad Shaft, I just hope they can do the series justice.
always protect that smile
Even tho Ice queendom is rly well made, I think I still like the original better. The music, the teamwork, the personality of every individual character... I think these stand out way more in the original.
There are definitely a lot of things I like about the new one but I feel like they cut some pretty important character moments not to mention the soundtrack was kinda boring for this fight
In the original scene they were uncoordinated and bumped into each other and just made more mistakes due to not being used to fighting alongside others, they just fought a little to well in the newer version imo and although I like having Nora launch the spear through the Deathstalker I think having her hit the stinger to kill it just made the fight feel a bit more dynamic and creative
I hope that if later seasons get adapted that they look at feedback and try not to take away character building like that
Nevermind the fact that Nora also launches the team off the falling bridge with the impact, in a callback to the earlier scene with Jeaune. Monty Oum was a master of the fight scene, and while the animation is prettier, it's lacking a lot of the oomph and kinetic energy of the original.

The biggest difference between the two is how much little each individual character gets screentime to show off their abilities in the IC adaptation. Here are some of my biggest observations:
1) Moments that display teamwork are no longer as prevalent.
@@randomradon not a alternate story line. It’s a new story told between vols 2-3. Hence why they speed ran the first 2 volumes in the first 3 episodes
Hopefully if RT dubs its they might add the soundtrack (if plenty of people talk about it)
Just because a track is in english doesn't mean it can't be in anime, otherwise the entirety of the Bleach and Evangelion ost wouldn't exist.
let me bring you this quick edit i did, adding in LittleV's rendition of Red like Roses into this scene. hope its fine LMAO

@@shironasama0445 Its a subjective matter. I still prefer the original.
I always loved the way the teams get separated at the bridge. The choreography of how Blake joins the others is so cool.
Watching this again is such a throwback. I remember when RWBY first came out back when I was in high school. So much nostalgia, glad to see a japanese company doing their own twist to it.
I'd very much like to finally get into RWBY. Nice that you caught the moment it was released.
The plot part is on purposex they only wnated to dedicate a small number of episodes to Season 3 before doing their own story so it should be slowing down
@@python1972 you mean season 1.
@@sunlitsonata6853 Precisely
@@sunlitsonata6853 kinda wish the whole jaune’s nightmare part was longer and they actually showed what happened with penny and torchwick
It's clearly nostalgia, the new one looks miles away from the original
@@JoJoboiWav Looks? Yeah I'll agree on that, but the choreography and dynamism of the characters was better in the original. The Anime looks pretty, but the music is worse and the cinematography of the shots is a downgrade from the original (though by no means bad).
@@Grounders10 Honestly the original one feels kinda sluggy, and is artistically way too inconsistent
The remake on the other hand also features better realized and better fitting musics, since the original ones were so badly used they make you feel like you're watching a 2010 amv
And given what the animation looks like, there's no way it could be considered as a downgrade, not even technically
@@JoJoboiWav Idk man that 2010 amv is the charm of the original rwby series tbh.
Those last 10 seconds are the ultimate version of RWBY that we'll never have because that would make us happy :(

@@Kazuhiro-i There was delay on the dub, sadly
I actually like the overall feel of JNPR’s combat in Ice Queendom; though admittedly sluggish, the team dynamic feels more realistic in that Jaune rushes the Death Stalker surprising Nora and Pyrrha, forcing the latter to cover his back while Ren literally jumps to help out with the stinger. Contrast this with the original where they show teamwork beyond that of one meeting, even going so far as to pull team combo with only a literal two word “heads up” by Nora to Pyrrha as she proceeded to ‘rocket’ jump off of an effective stranger’s shield.
Jaune, the guy that faked his way into Hunter school and has no idea how to fight, it's realistic that he charges in??? ok.

@@python1972 When writing the biggest piece of advice you get told is "show don't tell."
its one thing to say "Hey this character is a bit of a badass" and quite another to show that character being a badass.

The original of this scene is unmatched but like
RWBY looks so good in actual anime? Like this looks dope as hell
I know they tried new things in the anime, but man the original is just too good
Even outside of the main fighting sequences, everything flows so perfectly:
3:52 - Love how they introduce the scene
5:17 - I know many people are obsessed with this transition
5:53 - Uses a perfect opportunity to showcase each character's unique combat style with how they climb up
6:07 - When Red Like Roses finally comes on exactly when we can see Ruby's idea begins forming in her mind... perfection
8:26 - The back pan and showing JNPR's reaction is so good, as well as showing Ruby looking down the massive cliff
Or 1:22 vs 6:39 when Jaune takes command. In the original it feels really fast... his leadership and their team synergy is clear because it happens like instinct. And we feel hyped because it fits with the music and doesn't slow down the pace of the scene. The anime version feels so slow, like the deathstalker is just standing there waiting for them
7:32/7:42 - The OG makes it seem like each character is tagging in. The anime tried to do that at 2:05, but they tossed it away with 2:22
Imo RWBY as an anime doesn't really stand out as an anime, but OG RWBY was one-of-a-kind
going back and rewatching the first few volumes, man I miss Monty and his vision, choreography direction, and talent.
They are both so perfect I'm crying.
A bit sad tho that they took out the moment when Pyrrha throws Nora up to nail the Grim because that really showed how those two energies went together.
Plus thats how we started liking nora.
how is the anime one perfect the original is brimming with personality, the anime version is boring and generic they didn't even follow the fight as intended
You took the words out of my mouth
Concidering the newest volumes of the RWBY don't do much better with regards of the choreography, the remake just don't have the budget to do a bombastic high octane battle sequence, pretty sure the story boarderds where just comfabulated with how they intended to translate *that* into anime medium.
@@joseroa5243 there are ways to do it. It’s a daunting task considering how fast paced and unique the action of the original was. Edit: But yeah, budget does play a factor like you said.

The anime is just flashy for a second but has no real substance compared to the passion and originality of volume 1
They gave budget wonder woman a sniper rifle and I’m all here for it.
Haha
Monty is truly a genius.
was* 😭
Yes was
It doesn't beat the original, but it's still freaking good.
I'm pretty upset that they didn't include Nora's iconic scene. Especially since she's my absolute favorite
Same
I think there’s potential in this.
So much.
Little disappointed with the lack of Red Like Roses playing, but otherwise it's fine.
Speak The Truth!!! When the giant scorpion falls off the bridge and you hear "Couldn't take it couldn't stand another minute".
I love how this is the dream... But the dreams missing a few things. Like those wonderful sounds of the ember cylica lol Or the crescent rose.
Agreed. Everything sounding like lazers to me and not gun-like. Wished the collabed with RT to import sounds from the Original RWBY
I miss how each gun has it's own unique sound. Like, I could tell which was which in the OG
the artstyle of the remake is pretty good, but the character movements just feel so...
Yeah I miss having that recoil from their weapons.
Dude, I don't see any recoil
From what I've read, Japanese people don't have the sound quality or files for proper guns. They only use sounds from old movies or fantasy ones like chimes and whistles. 😂
Which is weird because we have shows like Tanya the Evil and Jormungand that have all the sounds and kick we'd need.
This is one of the problems i have with the anime.
Ruby's fighting style is built around Crescent Rose's recoil, for mobility and to enhance the scythe attacks.
Here we get a few to help decapitate the nevermore and i think a couple on the landing into the forest and thats really it.
Lol that last cut with swaped audio 😂😂
Gotta love that dynamics
The original one was still epic by several times. The fighting choreography and angles were top tier. Still, it was nice to see this as an official anime
I think RWBY OG still the best but RWBY Remake is nice too
Aw man they didn’t do the iconic RWBY climbing up the destroyed pillar bit
The hand-drawn is good, but original hits way harder. The cuts and pacing feel like a really intense battle. From the way the orders are barked and acknowledged, to the small moments of clumsiness in their team work, Monty Om had a real attention to detail that couldn't be replicated. Even the music sync's so well with the action, despite many people not liking the music of RWBY, that it feels almost like an old school AMV.
I’m sorry man, when Red Like Roses starts playing, that shit just hits different.
It's nice to see Pyrrah alive
We gotta enjoy it while it last
Don't get used to it

There's only one anime director that could match Monty's energy. I know it, you know it, we all know it: Hiroyuki Imaishi. A RWBY Trigger anime is the dream.

They also removed the boop
@@IckusVickus now that’s unforgivable
Good thing Phyrra is a magnet because her anime version would never find that shield again otherwise
Ruby's landing at the top in Queendom is perfect.
If RT contacted Kyoto Animation instead, we would still have the same quality of fight scenes in Queendom.
Of course, a studio that's never done an action-oriented show before would be great for RWBY 😂
Or even Ufotable, the masters of fight scenes.
Your such a 2D hater, you know that?
The remake is incredible art wise and and really nails each scene in its own way, but personally I prefer the original on there take and the absolute BANGER thats playing.
It’s looking good so far, obviously it wasn’t going to top the over the top action of the original but it could definitely benefit from the original music
My main problem is it seems to lack a lot of weight and clarity. A lot of the shots kind of go off model until you get the “final shot” where everyone is super detailed. It a really weird effect.
The original series had better choreography but this new one I think is better written
Same thought. Action wise. og. But if youre in it for the story? Well new one. I really dont know how I feel yet. I just know. My friends can now watch it the way they want it. Not Janky looking animation with great quality. But in 2d style. I hate it that they say "The animstion in the OG is shit (lets be real it can be at times)." But their taste.
yes BUT they did cut a lot of things which I'm not a fan of.
@@saberfan it's supposed to be a retelling, I hear the further in this series goes the more it will deviate from the original
@@saberfan amen Saber.
I really liked the humor of og rwby tho, did not see the the anime yet but i hope they kept yang's puns at least
that moment killing the bird in the anime gave me goosebumps is was so hype
5:19 Can we talk about how cool Blake is here? Like this is so badass and underappreciated imo. Also, I miss when Ruby's Crescent Rose was a bolt-action rifle and Yang's gauntlets were like pump-action shotguns. The reload animations and chambering the next round are such nice additions! (Rule of cool!)
Ice Queendom definitely looks good, but the coreography in the original is just cooler. Like the broken bridge, how Jaune and Nora get across the gap, or the nailing with how Nora launches off the shield and then rockets down with glee. It's just super cool action for the sake of looking awesome and I love it
While I personally think the original scene has better coreography and cinematography, the animators are doing such a good job on the new series that I'm willing to accept the changes
ice queendom totally beaten just with the song
Despite the limitations of animations, RWBY's fight choreography was quite excellent in the early seasons.
Ice queen's animation with the soundtrack would be amazing. Even though it looked way better the soundtrack really sets the time for the fights.
The anime version is really good and I'm glad a lot more people get to know Monty Oum's master piece, but they really toned it down on the action parts along with some of the dramatic slow mo scenes and wide shots
I have to say the anime version ice queendom is more flashy but it's not like the original that's more awesome.
People are comparing and complaining at the same time with this
And seriously, 2d and 3d has really big differences in budget uses, there are pros and cons in both 2d and 3d
Btw the choreography looks stunning and I really don’t know how much more you want with this
I fully agree with everything you said. nothing wrong with Ice queendom, but the music and fight intense moments aren't there. ontop of that when jaune and pyrrha work together in the animation green boy legit just jumps on the tail. in RTs green boy actually shots the tail off. the only one thing that ticks me off was rwby's and Weiss's little snaps at eachother/comic relief for like 2 seconds. and when RWby's gun fires no kick it just pews. Weiss's magic is just there and can be done from distances and no flicking(granted the hilt hold's the dust, felt like they could have done something there.
in conclusion though for a continuation or a growth for Rwby's audience it's pretty good and I'm hyped for the other episodes LMAO
Can't believe i was 12 when this came out. I feel old, yet i still geek out when i hear red like roses part 2
Finally after so many years i can recommend people to watch this version of RWBY xd
8:56 this is just what i needed xD thank you
I know Ice Queendom has to cut a lot for time, because the japanese still somehow believe they need to do things in 12 TV slot episodes, but the longer Monty scene comes off to me as much better (although the in-battle dialogue was largely improved upon in Queendom)
Agreed. That dialogue was pretty poorly written and woodenly delivered, I'm glad it got stripped out. The anime's melee combat is really rough though
I really love how they utilize their weapons like using the recoil to propell yourself in the air
Even after his death, Monty Oum remains king when it comes to fight choreography. Seriously, the man left this world too soon.
The animation is so all over the place to me 😅
Sometimes it looks like a decent or good fan animation, while other times its 4K Ray traced demon slayer levels of animation.
Love the overlay at the end. ❤
According to the watch % bar, 3:13 with weiss's hair animation and 6:50 with nora's airtime are the most rewatched parts of the video, as they should be
Nora sounds like a magical girl aswell as how her launchers fire while giving out like a laser-ish sound and Im loving it
