No wonder I couldn’t get it to work. When I was 8, my dad got me a little knife. I can’t tell you how many hours I practiced, throwing a knife to see if I could get it to stick in a tree! @Jouy195Because ppl raised back then (especially in the south) were not raised to be pussies. When I was 8yo my brother and I would go deep into the woods (a mile or farther) with shovels, hammer and nails, and machete to build forts. We did it all day sometimes. My recommendation is to buy at least TWO of your favorite knives and practice throwing only one of them. That way when you break your practice knife, you still have the other one for use. I have been practicing no-spin knife throwing as a surprise move with both over hand throws and under-hand tosses. There are specific distances that these two methods produce a zero-spin point-first hit, and I wait until my target is inside of that distance window. Throwing other items such as your tire iron or a garden spade (used for digging field latrines) might work better sometimes. Be ready to improvise. Jason, how about a tutorial on selecting and throwing a stick? A full, sealed beverage can is also a rather effective hurled object--weighing between 12 and 24 ounces, these can be thrown with accuracy past 50 feet, and if your target doesn't get out of the way it'll leave a mark! If your target does watch the can coming and ducks, then you've distracted your target for a moment--use that moment! Hey--that's one good use for Bud Light!
I think the best option is to use a throwing star instead of a throwing knife. Even a simple one made of sheet metal like a can lid sharpened will work, (although it will lack weight). 3D print a carrying case or sew a little pouch for them. Throwing stars were originally designed specifically for a distraction, not really to wound/kill, so they are effective for that purpose as the point will impact even if you throw in an awkward way you didn't fully practice. A gun is best though, lol
No-spin is the only real-world way to sink a knife with accuracy and consistency. Anyone that tells you that you need to flip or spin the knife is trying to sell you a knife throwing course that will get you injured or worse. Try using hay or straw "short" bale stacked flat with the edges towards you. Make sure that the bales are baled tight and the stack is tight. This works great for starting tomahawk throwing and makes easier for sticking knives. It saves the handles of both and the knives and tomahawk won't bounce back so far. Best if stacked on lawn or dirt.

Interesting. I started throwing knives in the earl '60s and became quite adept over 3 to about 25 feet using a rotating method. I pitched newspapers onto porches for 11 years, from the age of 10 ,while often riding my Mustang bike. I had a feel of rotations over distance and am intrigued that this video shows more misses than hits with a non-rotating technique. In my 70s now, I still reckon I can launch a knife some 20' across my backyard and stick it into a 4' diameter target. Just now placing an order for a matched set to test my cocky comment.
I spent months, hours a day, throwing knives. We built a target and had to replace it about once or twice a month. Knives got destroyed... best knife was the Gil Hibben pro throwing knife. I can say that we got great at about 40 feet or so.. full spins. Great times
Actually got pretty proficient at throwing knives when I was young. Thought I'd see if I could still do it after all these years. Just for giggles,.. used a fixed blade and don't you know,.. had throw it three times before it stuck. However, afterwards I stuck it every time at ten feet. Took a minute to get the hang of it again. Also, I throw a lot harder as I want it to stick deep or hurt as much as possible. Regular throwing knives are a different matter of technique. All in all, never bring a knife to a gun fight. Keep your gun handy, loaded and clean. Practice that often! Love blades BUT,.. not my go to.
When i first learned to throw a knife i taught myself how to do it spin free, and i was really good at it, but i was always trying to get the spin not realizing until now you're right. There's no reason for it, and i decrease my chances of getting a stick.
This is real. I throw. I practice. I would never throw my blade without some other weapon on me. Also, many throwers are injured by bounce back. We make sure for safe of others but if you miss and bounce, it can slice you up or kill you. Make sure you got a practice target that will take most momentum out. Hit youtube for throwing fails and you will see how many people got lucky. I don't have vids, but been sliced and whatnot.
Awesome short instructional vid for the novice knife throwers. Also found ur invaluable advice of prioritizing whether to throw vs retain the blade. Ur experience uploads help especially the novice everyday citizen defend themselves. Kudos. Anticipating ur next one. Peace
I believe I've heard that you had a chat... remote collaboration... something like that... with a notable knife thrower. If this is the case, will we be enjoying a video with some happy knife throwing endings? Either way- Love you, man. You're a wealth of knowledge and skills, whether or not knife throwing is among them. 👍👍 EDIT: If I've missed something already posted, forgive me; my ineptitude can know no bounds, occasionally.
There is a video up of a guy who throws no spin. He keeps his index finger extended and on top of the back of the blade. Gives a slight down motion with his extended finger just before release.
One thing I learned as US Marine and Recon team leader is Cardboard boxes filled with spray foam insulation. Get those thin amazon boxes and put them on two sticks with a paper target. Great stuff works great too but remember it expands and you have to let it dry. Pine, Spruce and Poplar are also great softwoods for targets if you want to go the wood route.
This is my gf phone but I have the same exact gun and was wondering how to throw a knife properly for the distraction tactic or to slow down this is great
Realistically if your throwing a knife at someone, its gonna puncture in some sort of way, so if you can get it to stick into a tree, youll know if it sticks into a tree it’ll definitely stick into a person.
Long ago (and far, far away. blah blah) I was actually quite good at throwing knives. My Sunday school teacher got me started! No matter the distance or the knife I always spun it exactly 1/2 turn. I always threw holding the blade, NOT the handle. You adjust your hold up or down the blade depending on weight, length, balance and distance. And I ruined several very good knives and destroyed one clothes dresser. I haven't thrown knives in about four decades because, as with you, I don't believe it is a good defensive move. Throw a rock or your wife's expensive china before giving away your weapon! But it is fun, and I now have so many knives I can afford to ruin a few. So, thanks for the video, it prompted me to restart an old hobby and, who knows, maybe it will come in handy. I hope not though, good knives are expensive! May God bless you and your family richly.
Lmao. One of the first tines where I am genuinely confused whether this was for comedy. You tell us you are going to teach us to throw knives but you don’t know how.
“No spin” is still spinning, but you’re so close it doesn’t appear to be. If you’re that close (3-7 feet?, depending on knife length, your grip, etc.) the primary reason I can think of to throw your knife would be to distract the assailant and give yourself an extra second to present your gun.
😂😂😂 Thanks for keeping real! I personally would never throw a knife. In my mind all I'd be doing is giving the assailant a weapon to finish me off faster!!
First off, I don't know why I'd have a knife in my hand instead of my gun if things got that serious. If I only had a knife, I'm not throwing it. Still, as he presents it all, I see what he's saying.
I’ve got a couple “Morakniv” knives, both are reliable enough for use in a camping situation, but I wouldn’t want to rely on them as a throwing weapon, it’s just too lightweight, I think. I’ve tried throwing knives, even stars, this is who I always have a backup
i own 2 crossbows, knuckle duster gloves, loads of types of bolts, and my 8 throwing knives are in the post now, i live in the uk so you gotta be ready lol
Thanks for the video. I can see where knife throwing could become a fun sport for some people. I've tried a few times, and I just don't have the patience for it. I have wondered whether someone could use the dedicated throwing knives for small game hunting in a survival situation.
I got some throwing knives one Christmas when I was a kid. They were made from very soft steel and were dull (for safety.) They were difficult to throw properly, but they would stick in a cardboard box if you hit it just right.
So yes, offcourse throwing with a spin is more movie’esh, but stil very much realistic, and IMO, having to go through the bigger arm movement to negate spinning telegraphs your action to much. So it’s a good technique for recreational use, but in a situation where you need to protect yourself it’s way to obvious. The Practicality of a spinning throw is that you can almost exclusively lowerarm/wrist it with more accuracy. Also the distance according to the technique/point of release you use is very important.
Love the idea of knife throwin but ya its all around a bad idea. Dont give the enemy your weapon. Ive learned it helps to know the spin vs distance ratio . Like 3 feet 1 flip by the point is one of my ratios. 4 feet by the hilt 2 flip. A quick jerk back at the end of the throw increases flips but decreases power.
This uses the samurai technique of throwing shuriken to close the distance and use a katana. Since you have a pistol, it is less useful. It would be a better strategy to throw a kick to buy time and draw. I would throw a knife if I had no choice , for instance the attacker is a shooter and the only weapons I had were knives, as in a gun free zone where criminals are free to have guns. To stick a knife in a tree you need a heavier throwing knife. To stick a knife in flesh you don’t. I have found that Spyderco Enduras work well out to 7 yards with a handle held no spin throw. I carry a pr, and also a fixed blade Kasper Companion. Just from my lessons in life
The fact you even got it to stick at all, you're a better man than me. 😁 I've had about the same luck with throwing axes/tomahawks. Actually, have had more success with shuriken spikes. Made a bunch out of scrap metal. The kids and I throw them in old chunks of Dow extruded Styrofoam (after they destroyed my archery target with their homemade spears 🤬). Looks a lot like your football pass analogy. Fast overhand or underhand throw, slides off the palm. I'm sure with a ton of practice could be epically ninja-ish, but strangely enough monolithic hollow points... work even better.
When I was 8 years old I loved watching Daniel Boone on TV every morning. The intro has him splitting a tree with a tomahawk. So after the show I would go out and throw a hatchet at a mammoth sized sycamore till I finally gave up. Boone made it look so easy. That's because I had no idea what Hollywood special effects were back then.
im NOT an expert, not pretending to be. but im a butcher and at work weve screwed around throwing knives into boxes. i throw them very straight, when you mention a football i think of the logic more as when you roll a bowling ball but overhand instead of underhand. yes, a gun will win 99% of the time in self defense lol
You can throw harder if you spin it and it will stick every time when you practice enough. How balanced the knife is is not that big of a deal if the knife is heavy. You need to throw a couple hundred times to get good
When I was in combat I quickly realized that knife throwing is a very effective strategy to slow down your opponent. I particularly targeted the groin and thigh region to disable/distract my opponent before coming in with the kill hatchet in CQB.
The CIA… wow, as an Englishman that’s super impressive. Can tell your a professional when you transition from the knife to the gun 👌 In England we are only allowed to carry our fists for protection, and even that can land you in hot water… great channel, subscribed 👍
That is hilarious. The first thing I thought when you were throwing the knife at the tree was look out for the rebound/stick! That's what would happen to me LOL. And indeed real throwing knives are specially made and balanced. And like you so duly noted, definitely don't dispose of the only weapon you have. 👍
it's all in the rotation of your arm. fort sill oklahoma apache knife throwing..I trained throwing a machete..same concept all in the rotation of the arm..for me I would love to think, I could nail it every time...😀

LOL. The vide is How to "throw" a knife, not how to be effective at it or look cool like Hollywood. I have bought throwing knives in the past and still suck at it using those. As for my many SOG's and other "edged tools"...I love having them I would never throw them at anyone as I want to retrain them and be able to use them for my entire life and hand them down to the boys. Now, throwing a smooth river rock any a threat, sure! Especially if you are in a low trout stream and they are abundant...or hucking a nice fire hardened stick with a point...all day. Love the vids Jason. 🙂
There is a science to throwing nives. Don't use me as a reference. I'm far from an expert, But I think if he would have stepped back 6 feet. He would have stuck at least a few more...
Thank you for sharing your experience Robert. God bless!
Peace
Thank you! Stay safe and God bless!
Came here from Adam Celadin's response. Great video!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing! God bless and stay safe!
I've tried throwing knives that weren't designed to be thrown. It's really difficult and sometimes the handle breaks off.
This is my gf phone but I have the same exact gun and was wondering how to throw a knife properly for the distraction tactic or to slow down this is great
That's great! Thanks for sharing!
Realistically if your throwing a knife at someone, its gonna puncture in some sort of way, so if you can get it to stick into a tree, youll know if it sticks into a tree it’ll definitely stick into a person.
I like him because he is real!! Thank you.
It's not just the throwing it's knife and the balance 😊
I was always taught that if you throw a knife and miss, you just disarmed yourself. LOL. I agree with you 100%.
Thank you for watching!
Cool! 😂💙🦅💙 I would like a set of throwing knives… never had one of those. God Bless you too. 🙏🏾
Lmao. One of the first tines where I am genuinely confused whether this was for comedy. You tell us you are going to teach us to throw knives but you don’t know how.
What a great video! I love the reality vs real disappointment, that's what real instruction is about.
Glad you enjoyed it!Thank you for watching
Another awesome video. Thanks for teaching these life skills!
Glad you like! God bless you
I appreciate your index finger off the trigger in time when talking about using a handgun.
Thank you for sharing. Stay safe and God bless!
Finally, someone tells the truth about knife ( or axe) throwing in a fight. Thank you.
Thank you for watching. God bless!
If someone actually trains to throw a knife, the outcome would look much different.
i own 2 crossbows, knuckle duster gloves, loads of types of bolts, and my 8 throwing knives are in the post now, i live in the uk so you gotta be ready lol
Thanks for the video. I can see where knife throwing could become a fun sport for some people. I've tried a few times, and I just don't have the patience for it. I have wondered whether someone could use the dedicated throwing knives for small game hunting in a survival situation.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching- God bless!
Absolutely correct in that throwing a knife is not the end-all, but merely a distraction towards what IS the end-all......if one caries!
Thank you for sharing! God bless you
THIS IS NOT A KNIFE THROWING VIDEO....
THIS IS A GUN VIDEO :]
I usually trow props knife for cosplay or playing with freinds
Watching this make my accuracy more better
That's great! Thank you for sharing!
Well, there ya go! A real CIA officer that knows all about knife-throwing. Obviously a CIA contract killer. Special operations. I'm impressed!
I got some throwing knives one Christmas when I was a kid. They were made from very soft steel and were dull (for safety.) They were difficult to throw properly, but they would stick in a cardboard box if you hit it just right.
Thank you for sharing. God bless!
6/17/23 Viewing and learning; loved it!
Thank you Thomas! God bless you!
A good technique is a no spin underhand throw. A hold by the handle throw akin to James Coburn in the Magnificent Seven
That was a rotation throw.
I don’t rotate it I hold by the handle a use a no spin, but depending on knife you can use a half spin
i appreciate you for posting the fails as well thats some good content.
Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching. God bless!
Great video! It looks so easy in the movies lol but you gave me some awesome tips! It is so helpful!
Thank you Reni ! God bless you!
Thanks Jason!! great info as always....Stay safe, God Bless and looking forward to your next video!!
Thats Great! You too!God bless!
New title: "How to throw a hunk of metal till midnight at your aggressor"
Just from my lessons in life
"how to throw a knife (no spin knife throw)"
Proceeds to do a rotational throw... and quite badly at that.
That was a legitimate knife throwing video.
I just stink at throwing knives, therefore it isn't on my menu of options.
I noticed the cut between the throw and the knife sticking in the tree.
Just saying...
Maybe it was just unlucky timing of the camera pan to the knife, but looked like an cheesy movie edit to me too
@@UnluckyFriedKitten A former member of the CIA wouldn't present false information would he?
The fact you even got it to stick at all, you're a better man than me. 😁
I've had about the same luck with throwing axes/tomahawks.
Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and God bless!
Remind me not to rob your house. Over 3 people training in armed combat? Nuh-uh.
That thumbnail are those from your collection? They are all wonderful.
Thank you for sharing! God bless you!
@@JasonHansonSpyBriefing You bet! Love your books! Got 'em all!!!
Love this guy. Always gives us a smile.
So nice of you, thank you!
im NOT an expert, not pretending to be. but im a butcher and at work weve screwed around throwing knives into boxes. i throw them very straight, when you mention a football i think of the logic more as when you roll a bowling ball but overhand instead of underhand.
yes, a gun will win 99% of the time in self defense lol
Even if a person was a good, I don't think most people would just stand there if they saw a person attempting to throw a knife at them.
I have a Japeness knife it is really good for throughing
Am I the only one who noticed an awkward "film splice" on the last throw that magically "stuck?"
Jason, that video was so funny and entertaining!
Glad you enjoyed them! Thanks for watching. God bless!
Yup....and the non sticks were over-spins...handle hit tree.
Thanks Jason. Very valuable education
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
Great video! Thanks for the advice. I`m gonna practice that technique.
Glad it was helpful!Thank you for watching! God bless you
The CIA… wow, as an Englishman that’s super impressive. Can tell your a professional when you transition from the knife to the gun 👌 In England we are only allowed to carry our fists for protection, and even that can land you in hot water… great channel, subscribed 👍
thanks it helped a lot 👍
Nice sig. Good concealment barely seen it until you pulled it.
Thanks for the view, James! Stay safe and God bless!
That is hilarious. The first thing I thought when you were throwing the knife at the tree was look out for the rebound/stick! That's what would happen to me LOL. And indeed real throwing knives are specially made and balanced.
And like you so duly noted, definitely don't dispose of the only weapon you have. 👍
Thank you for watching. God bless!
it's all in the rotation of your arm. fort sill oklahoma apache knife throwing..I trained throwing a machete..same concept all in the rotation of the arm..for me I would love to think, I could nail it every time...😀
Thank you for watching. Stay safe and God bless!
Do the movie ninja thing on that gnat since the knife is handy.😁 Very cool vid to reinforce what some of my military buddies have told me before; don't throw your weapon away.
Thank you for sharing! God bless you
be careful practicing. keep longer distance, especially throwing at hard objects. once my knife flew back at me and hit just under my eye,
Good training, thanks
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching. God bless!
I like your videos a lot, but do you realize if you slow the video speed down you can clearly see that the knife spins?
Awesome !!!
appreciate ya bro
Happy to help John! God bless you
Dude, this was by far one of the funniest videos u ever did, thank u for everything u do, & all ur services, I'm an atheist with nihilistic views on life, so I dnt do the religion aspect ur big on, but everything else is absolutely amazing, I'm sorry u came to my area I live in (chino hills so. Cal.) & Ran into one of our weirdo, queer, homo stalkers, but I promise if I ever am privileged to meet u in my region, I won't be a homo stalker to u, cz ur the best bro, u are in fact a real American hero, even though u come off as cocky, arrogant & narcissistic.😁👍
Thank you for watching. God bless!
Thanx Jason, great video. That was one hard tree, lol. My luck the knife will bounce back n get me,lol. God bless and have a great fathers day.
You're welcome Julio! God bless you
Thank you for that, God bless!
There is a science to throwing nives. Don't use me as a reference. I'm far from an expert, But I think if he would have stepped back 6 feet. He would have stuck at least a few more... I haven't thrown in over a decade. I'm looking forward to getting back into it as a hobby.
P.S. I used to have a no spin underhand throw that would work at that distance.
Thank you for sharing. Stay safe and God bless!
@JasonHansonSpyBriefing My wife and I went to a barbecue at our friend's house. I notice that he has a Knife throwing target Set up in his backyard...
Now I have to dig up my old throwing knives and remember how to use them.
