Great video! I once heard an excellent teacher say “If you’re not having fun- you’re doing it wrong”. Karen’s teaching method is absolutely brilliant. 🎶

Karen's series on music theory was a revelatory experience for me. I had classical lessons for 6 years but never felt I really understood what was going on. My teacher was a marvelous pianist (performing since elementary school, played with Detroit Symphony) and a good teacher but maybe not the best teacher for me. It was embarrassing when people asked if I could play by ear and I had to confess (if only to myself) that not only could I not, but I had *no* idea of how to even attempt it. Improvising over the introduction to Supertramp's "Bloody Well Right?" Forget it. After Karen's excellent instructional videos, I still can't but I do know how it's done. I remain a huge fan and grateful for her clearing up enough mysteries to reignite my enthusiasm and convince me to buy a guitar in pursuit of a lifelong dream.

Carpal tunnel stopped my playing, but let me give you a real piece of advice.
Learn the cords, C, F, & G. (G cord looks like you're shooting a bird). Hold the C cord and thumb pick around till you find the note that your tune sounds right (in your head), to start with. Hold that C cord position till it doesnt sound right, then go to F cord. Pick around and find the notes that make up your tune. REMEMBER where they are. When that cord doesn't sound right, go to G. If that doesn't sound right go back to C. REMEMBER where the changes are. Now, SET THE GUITAR DOWN AND GO SPLASH A LITTLE WATER ON YOUR FACE AND EARS. (That resets your nerves.)
Now, go get your guitar and sit, comfortably on a stool with your guitar resting on your leg or lap, and Get your C cord again and play thru the tune you picked out before. DON'T EXPECT to get it right the first time...or even the first dozen times, but try to LEARN where it all is and when to change. You'll find out that playing the guitar isn't much more than a memory game and target practice.
What you want to accomplish is a strum, with your thumb, down all the strings, occasionally, and picking out the tune and putting in a strum occasionally and eventually getting it so the tune you're playing has some rhythm, and you're providing your own accompaniment as well as playing the tune. DON'T TRY TO LEARN 5 OR 6 SONGS AT THE SAME TIME !!! Learn ONE song !!! Tgen start learning another one. If you have it on CD, listen to the song a bunch and go pick it out. a little at a time. The better you get at it, the more time you'll be working on it and the faster you can do it. Later, when you're on stage and a Guest Singer comes up, you can follow them and have enough of the melody figured out, when the time comes, to do the Lead part to let their voice rest and let them come back in for the chorus. IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH TIME YOU PRACTICE and your memory and target practice.
      GOOD LUCK

@@general5104 Thank you for the advice! Open chords are pretty solid, but switching between is a work in progress. What has been most shocking is how consistent practice has made things that seemed impossible become much less so.

Hello Karen, I've been listening to your lessons for a long time now. I finally picked up a few things about the circle of fifths my band leader has been trying to teach me from watching your videos. I am also trying to get my moxy back with playing the organ, but I'm playing a piano. Long story..... I know most of what you're teaching but I've been playing drums the last 30 or so years instead of keyboard - another long story sadly to say. At retirement age, trying to pick it all back up again is even harder, at least for me, but I'm trying. Many thanx to you and a couple other folks on line I'm getting some of it, but I'll never make it to where I was nor be that virtuoso my grandmother wanted me to be, but I love just hearing you speak and I'm at least catching a few things to make it fun to at least watch. God bless sweetie. Happy 2023......

I have been watching Karen for many years and own many of her books. The information they contain is invaluable. I would really love to hear Karen explain 13 chords. I see them frequently in advanced jazz transcriptions written by pianist like Marion McPartland. It would be very helpful.

i love the way you teach music Karen, its so easy to understand,im a play by ear keyboard hobbyist,i know the duration of notes, but i could never place them on the musical staff, when i see sheet music,i always have to count from the G (sol clef) where to find the other ones, very anoying, thats why i leanrned to play by ear,i also use studio one (DAW) in there you can find a lot of things to help you along, like the chord track,i also have the plugin scaler 2,wich is great for finding chords and also rythmic patterns, but you can get the free cales and chordz for only the chords, looking out for part 2,have a nice day Karen and thanx for your teachings
