Yo I've been playing piano since i was around 3. I've studied classical piano in middle school, went to an arts high school for piano, AND studied piano in college. This is by FAR one of the BEST explanations on progressions I've EVER heard. I am an advanced piano player AND teacher, and this lady taught me something i didn't think of before!!! BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She is blessed to have a the true talent of TEACHING. Not only does she lecture and implement various styles of learning, she also checks in with her audience to ensure their understanding. As a bonus, she utilizes "common" stories as anecdotes in order to maximize each listener's capability to learn. Simply put, SHE'S AWESOME!!

Self taught, play by ear guitar, ukulele, harmonica. Brain badly wired ; totally unable to read notes. Limited knowledge and difficulty understanding much of the music theory. Very, very happy to come upon your series of videos on playing by ear. Has been able to understand some of the theory now. You are a fantastic teacher. Not everyone can impart knowledge in the way you do, and with such humour and enthusiasm. Thank you very much.

wow. thank you. this is why i dropped lessons. just mindless repetition, practice, chord identification, scales, memorizing (not learning) a song, without ever explaining the relationship between chords, and how to move through progression. it honestly felt like to me that my instructor didnt want me to grasp this concept so id be inclined to pay for more lessons. i know thats nonsense and he teaches much more experienced musicians, but i dont understand why this wasnt made clear to me or even mentioned by now.

When you said that 85% of music revolve around that circle I put it to the test and surely just as you said the song used those chords just like that. Thanks!

Yes I had the AHHHHHHHH moment too. The road home works for almost all standards the I have tried and after a while I started memorizng the road home, D always goes to G and B always to E etc. I,ve watched this vid a couple of times this past week while practicing and it totally works for me. All Karen's lessons have improved my skills. Thank you Most all the UA-cam vids on cirle of fifths do not include anything like this. They only show how to find keys and sharps and flats for scales

I love the use of metaphors here to make it easier to understand - and it does! Of course, I tend to be a husband who leaves home without the GPS, and I love "getting lost" - to use Karen's metaphor. I have some friends - such as the diminished 7th, a few modes, the German 6th, etc., and they help me go to places where no husband has gone before. Egads, don't tell the wife!

I watch I learn something this is great what I see is you make circle place
c at noon on clock face and g at 6 then you can count to 5 from c which gives g thats marked at 11 you keep counting up 5 but placing what note that is then at 10 then 9 so forth till you get back to 6 position and you keep counting up 5 till you get back to C at noon..
counting 5s but writing the clock backwards so to speak AFTER you establish C at noon and G at 6. You cant mess up and we now know that the major will be left or right of C or which ever note you start with and if you count back 3 from any key also you can find its relative minor key.
I started not to see things but thought there has to be a pattern and this isnt the circle of 5ths but rather the circle of 4ths counting up clockwise.... c to f isnt 5 its 4 so circle of 4ths is where we can determine what probable chord progressions would be thrown at you..
This is a huge break through for me mainly cause I looked at it back wards and thought there must be a pattern but its not 5 the way I was thinking counting clockwise but rather counting counter clockwise but you can count up 4 and go the other way...
regardless if you count back 3 your at what ?
    The relative minor..
    this is too cool...
also the formula of where most chords go...
thats two ways of attacking the same problem and the circle of 4ths makes it
even faster as you could just sit down and spin the wheel so to speak
gives me an idea to make red clock hands at 9 and 12 always only make the 9
arm show minor and 12 arm always show Tonic or Major 1 or root.
Essentially you could move the hands and instantly write down the chords very quickly and chart out a list of songs...
I mean this is great practice to apply to any key but she even points out e a d are common guitar keys...
haha she said playing on the other side would be a nightmare on guitar...
she has that right.... actually Guitar is upside down and facing away from you where as a piano or keyboard you can see the melody....
so this makes me want to visualize a guitar fretboard almost like a piano keyboard where are the white keys vs accidentals or #s and bs located only on the guitar..
I see the guitar fretboard as the keyboard now finding all half steps on e b e strings to find the c and f notes bc and ef..
the rest are black keys now in my brain only on fretboard..
You can see them in front of a guitar and if your holding one leaning over it you have to look out and over and visualize .. Or even while your not around a guitar too look at or keyboard its easier on keys as every 2 black keys to the left of those are 2 white keys b and c.. and left of every 3 set of black keys
is ef those are your two half steps. the rest are black keys dig it ?
Makes me want to draw fingerboard out and label notes in white or black letters or grey even to illustrate where the black keys would fall on guitar fingerboard so you can see patterns emerge there wwbb or wwbbb 2 and 3 groupings of black keys..
I want to make a progression generator
a square with circle inside and black lettering round the circle of 4ths
and red and Blue arms 12 blue 9 am Red those would be one on a rivet and can be moved but no matter where you could instantly see what the minor is...
you could sit down with that and pad of paper and write out every key and in no time flat go through about every progression you can think of and just write them out...
Its a quick reference and any musician could have that on stand or nearbye and spin the wheel. Now I want one on a watch and to have moveable ring that spins to any key...
see what you inspired in me ?
I WANT A CIRCLE OF 4THS WATCH WITH MOVEABLE OUTER RING THAT SHOWS 12 AS ONE COLOR AND 9 AS ANOTHER NEON GLOW IN DARK WOULD BE NEAT BUT 3 DIFFERENT COLORS....
YOU COULD BE HANDED A STACK OF SONGS AND
TOLD THIS ONE IS IN THIS KEY THIS ONE IN THAT
AND YOU CAN GO OFF AND WRITE THEM RIGHT OUT
ON PAD AND PAPER AND CHART THE TUNES.

This is one of the few, and the best as far as I'm concerned, of the numerous "circle of fifths" videos that covers how the circle provides chord progressions. We also used Five Foot Two as an example, but stress that its a a series of dominant fifth chords: in C it's E7 to A7 to D7 to G7 and back home to C. We put out a video for ukulele players on this.
