I remember seeing Bill McGuire close to 15 years ago on PBS shows, one of which was on the Canary islands and a possible disaster there caused by a massive landslide. Honestly, I think it's possibly that it was his son that made him feel some of the poignancy of what climate change has in store for young people and future generations.
I have also been many years in the trade. I still remember when they talked about population control in the sphere of ecology. But this did not fit the narrative. Or simply, - so we have limits to growth? Yes! but we’re trying hard to get ignore them. ( old in joke there ) Quite simply we used a stable predictable climate to make almost every advance we made. From vaccines to complex farming to nitrogen fertilisers. We took 2 billion years of stored carbon energy from the ground in 200 years. Giving the average modern global North person more ‘energy slaves’ that the kings of the ancient world. With a lifestyle to match. And as our nature dictated we grew into all available land & used all available resources. Eventually going far beyond the earths carrying capacity to feed us, provide a decent life & to recycle our waste products & emissions. The problem now is, even if we wanted to change the direction of travel ( we don’t ) the global economy is such a vast complex beast that nobody really has any sort of micro control of it. Indeed, we are starting to realise that we are post abundance and that going forward, resources will become a somewhat 0 sum game. We now enter the time of real politick again. When we most need grown up co-operation it will be wholeheartedly superseded by out narrow self interests. To the detriment of all. Without the stable climate & access to vast dense energy resources to tap as we like. Our population must fall of the hockey 🏒 stick to a terrible crash. Everyone here knows of the many many feedback loops that will & have already been activated. From the Amazon & other net carbon sequestration areas turning into net emitters, to the catastrophic loss of albedo of the earth meaning we soak in way more solar radiation to heat the earth. I personally believe we will be probably be sub 1 billion people left by 2100 & it could be considerably less. I will not bore / terrify people with the details but it will not be a pleasant time to go through. I shall not personally see it at my age but I will not weep for missing it. I feel for the young though. The life my generation got to live will soon come to sound like a unimaginable fairytale Oh & the world leaders know exactly how bad it will be. But people like us only get into the room once. Then they self select the advisers who have a very hopeful take to give advice. But the time of this absurd hope is almost done. Please do also give a listen to Prof Guy McPherson and also Dr Ye Tao on UA-cam; it has been an eye opener for me. A potential solution - MEER (mirrors for earth’s energy rebalancing) - I.e. geo engineering., is very interesting, and one that could also be implemented on different scales e.g. new house builds having reflective roofs. My house has a metal roof and I will look into painting it with reflective paint. The concern regarding stopping fossil fuel burning in the short term is that it does provide aerosol masking… the earth actually heated up during 2020 even though we drastically reduced emissions during the pandemic. Your video is absolutely right about world leaders just having no idea how bad things are. They are not fit for the problems we are facing. And young people are key to making the changes necessary; climate change should be taught in schools. My big worry is that we have already set off feedback loops in nature, and that climate change (warming) may now be increasing exponentially.
Any reflective approach will not solve the existing problem of all the excess heat of the last 40 years--95%---stored in the oceans, i.e. already in the earth system.
