Living in The Time of Dying is an unflinching look at what it means to be living in the midst of climate catastrophe and finding purpose and meaning within it. Recognising the magnitude of the climate crisis we are facing, independent filmmaker Michael Shaw, sells his house to travel around the world looking for answers. Pretty soon we begin to see how deep the predicament goes along with the systems and ways of thinking that brought us here.
Featured in this documentary are Professor of Sustainability and founder of the Deep Adaptation movement Jem Bendell, award winning journalist and author of "The End of Ice" , Dahr Jamail, Dharma teacher and author of Facing Extinction Catherine Ingram and Stan Rushworth, a Native American Elder, teacher and author who brings an especially enlightening viewpoint to these questions.
While it becomes clear that catastrophic climate change is now inevitable it also opens up a whole new set of questions: How exactly did we arrive at this point? What new choices can we make now re how to live our lives and what actions make sense at this time. The people interviewed in the documentary, all highly regarded and well known spokespeople on the issue, argue it's too late to stop what is coming but in no way is it too late to regain a renewed, life giving relationship with our selves and our world.

I am 68 years old; I have been involved in the environment and conservation since I was 10. Every day I think about our world and where it is heading. This documentary says it all. The greed and selfishness of humans have created this. It is too late to change direction. My heart aches for all the nonhumans, wildlife, oceans, insects, all other beings that did nothing to deserve to die because of us.
I'm a couple decades younger and been an environmentalist since my teens. I've finally concluded that humanity isn't going to fix this and it's almost certainly already too late. 😕 overall we're just not a worthy species
At 68 you should know that the ice has been melting for the past 10K years or more. Eventually this inter-glacial period will come to an end and the global glaciers will return. Climate changes, plan on it and adapt.

Last night it was warm and humid. Not a mosquito or nat to be seen hovering around the deck light. When I mentioned it to my wife, She just said “ good”. Most of us are blind to the situation. Thank you for being there. It’s lonely out here in the new world.
Most of us don't even see our own food supply let alone the food of another species.
I noticed not many frogs or cricket sounds. The fish and Coral here in S.Florida are dying. I hope its not to late.
Yes! I've noticed less squirrels, various birds, especially crows & pigeons.. I remember more of all of the above.. Of course there were people that had natural lawns instead of mowed lawns in the 60's/70's.
So there were plenty of butterflies & moths, mice, snakes..

Look at a light that you leave on all night. I remember when that there were all kinds of insects flying around that light I looked at that light last night There was not even one insect around that light. Not even one moth. Not even one. I remember seeing Luna moths. In fact all of the big moths. I don't see any now. I don't see the dragonfly or damselflies like I used to. Fewer and fewer butterflies as well. Grasshoppers. Something is happening.
This is such a beautifully sad and important documentary. As a psychologist who's practiced for more than 40 years in the U.S. I've observed such a widespread fetish for happiness and resistance to sitting with sad truths. But it's only through immersion in truth that there is any hope of true healing. Thank you for this.
I have found over many decades of seeing therapists here and there, that it is the rare therapist that can handle listening to my anguish about the environment. Thank you for your awareness!

"fetish for happiness" is exactly the correct wordage. Anything at all remotely deep that triggers feelings of sadness is dismissed. It's more devastating to not be able to talk about this with people for fear of being called doomer or alarmist or "out there".

I understand your exasperation Anne. I was an "environmentalist" from the age of ten (I am now sixty). Didn't even know the term. Without the reality of extinction I would have lost my mind. Not enough people cared or care. Ironically though I find comfort knowing that all suffering will end.

I've said all my 43 years that we are living in the garden, so it was nice to hear Stan say it. I was saddened to see how few people shared my perspective. I'm 16th Cherokee. I have always been at odds with the common culture of disregarding nature and not seeing how wonderful it is to be in this beautiful place.
excellent documentary! 11 years ago, I was part of a 4 person sailing crew (from a tiny marine conservation ngo) that visited various islands in Vanuatu/the Solomons. These small island communities invited us to assess their coral reef ecosystems and help establish marine protected areas. At one island community, after I spoke about climate change and adaptation measures, a 6 year old asked me 'what is your country doing to help climate change?' and my heart broke as I realised I had no answer. I still don't. Many marine biologist friends of mine quit this field (including myself for the last few years) because of low pay and the mental toll of knowing the facts and not seeing much happen to counteract this. I've been sad for years and I can't un-know humans' ecological impact - climate change, ocean acidification, loss of our forests, plastic pollution, etc. I decided that I'd rather live simply and be in the ocean and just turned in my notice at my job with the plan on going back into marine conservation. What an absolutely gorgeous planet we live on!! 🐳🌏
I am 70 and to watch the total destruction of our planet over my life time has left me sad and heartbroken. I live on forty rural acres and have dedicated it to regrowing the forest and restoring wildlife habitat all the while that I was as effective at changing the out come as I would be pissing into a hurricane

I’ve been aware of the climate crisis decades ago and came up with my own pessimistic predictions for our extinction which seems to have been correct. Even today, there is no one I can share this video with because they aren’t able to handle it. So I live alone and do what I think is helpful knowing that nothing I do will make a difference except for giving me peace of mind. I’m 70 years old , worked hard all my life, and here I sit by the river with my dog waiting for the end.

In our evolution as humans, once we transitioned from hunter/gatherers to an agrarian society, it set in motion the pattern of buying and selling goods & services to each other which, ( with an ample measure of greed thrown in), got us to where we are today. Our willingness to harm & exploit Nature, is directly linked to our willingness to harm & exploit each other. Very sad state of affairs.
This documentary brought back so poignantly a time when I was in my 30s and attended a workshop led by the late Thich Nhat Han at the Omega Institute in NY. It was a silent workshop and I didn't realize how profoundly it had affected me until I left and spent 3 days in NYC alone, just wandering the city and visiting places. I was so open and free and peaceful, and taking everything in. When I visited the Museum of Natural History, I remember crying my way through it. All the photos and stuffed species that were on display--I looked at them and just wept, knowing how little time they have left, and how little time we have left. I was sorrowful but strangely peaceful at the same time. I'm 65 now, and what I knew so profoundly at a young age for just a few short days is upon me again. Dreams and visions are speaking to me of our immediate peril, especially with regards to the oceans. Thank you Michael for putting this out there for us.

Thank you for your story. We are at a turning point. How we respond will determine if human civilization survives, because the Great Waves of Change are here. I read prophecy this years ago, it was hard to take in then, now I'm watching it happen.

@@wmanadeau7860 Yes all of us are! And most people, even some of the most aware, are in denial to some extent.
This morning a man was walking past me while I was seated on a bench on a forest trail, he and I felt compelled to speak to one another. We ended up finding out how connected we already were in spirit. We became fast friends. We spoke about the plight of mankind, why we run to nature, why so many are disconnected from each other etc.
After connecting so deeply with this stranger, I realized that it's possible to find others with the same vibrancy. Our eyes are open to the problem, therefore we can have our eyes open to the solution, and open to recognizing those who will contribute to the solutions.
Our grief/guilt for our disconnection to Mother Earth is certainly real, but so is our love and childlike fascination with her. THAT is what we must tap into; our power to cooperate, coordinate, and create new things together with a similar vision that includes the well-being of everything on this planet.
We need not live in despair for there is hope. As Stan Rushworth brought out, we are not captive by time or distance. And those of us who are awake to this plight of humanity, WILL FIND EACH OTHER. There will come a time when our courage will be activated and it will move us to connect and form a tribe of renewal and regeneration. IMO it's inevitable.
The problem is that mankind is turning its back on its Creator - Jesus Christ.
@@earlysda Im familiar with the Christian God, and I agree with Stan Rushworth on this. While the Bible has some good advice, as all religions do, the conceited notion of having divine right to rule and for man to have dominion over all of nature is problematic.
We were kicked out of the garden as Stan Rushworth eloquently stated. So the Christian mindset does not propagate love for nature because it doesn't identify it as "sacred." They are not focused on the present... 'God will fix things.' 'It's not my responsibility.' This is a real shame. It didn't have to be this way.
When one is neohumanistic, as all indigenous people were at one time, then everything is sacred and treated as such. Animals, rocks, trees, the ocean etc. If all religious people put aside their heavenly calling, and instead took responsibility for their relationship with the planet, we would all be living in paradise.

Perhaps this is why large segments of us are going berserk...we know we and our Earth is dying, and mentally we can't accept it, or deal with it.
People keep calling me cruel lately just for stating things as they are. It is staring everyone in the face and they don't want to accept it. This is exactly why I didn't have children. I know I'm NOT crazy about what's going on around me. Of course I don't want it this way, but that's what's happening. Denying it isn't doing anyone any favors. People denying what is happening around them is cruel. To be honest, I wish I could deny it as well. It's a very hard thing to witness.
I feel the same, I wish I could ignore everything going on. I don't understand why anyone would want to bring a child to such a depressing place. I'm 51 n have no regrets I didn't reproduce.

I'm sorry but I have been monitoring this fraud for more than 30 years, all of it is untrue. CO2 as a heat trapping gas is insignificant. In fact as the greening agent of the plant carbon dioxide is the Earth's only "green" gas not "greenhouse" gas. A greener planet is a cooler planet
Hurricanes have been hitting the South Eastern US shores for our entire history, none of this is new. In fact we have had a dearth of hurricanes over the last decade. What is new is massive coastal development making the damage they do far more excessive. Hurricanes don't cause a nickel of damage to a deserted beach. They just rearrange the sand.

It’s denial
As a young child growing up in NYC in the 1960’s, from my youthful observations and readings, my eyes and gut feelings told me we humans were not long for existence as a dominant species. Somehow I made the prediction that not only will we destroy ourselves, but most of the living things on this planet as well. Fast forward 50+ years and over 50 countries later to which I’ve traveled, I am fully convinced (and saddened) that my initial observations seem to be confirmed. Thank you for this documentary. Unfortunately, those who should REALLY read this, will dismiss it as propaganda to spook the financial markets. My son told me as a teenager that humans won’t last another 100 years, and I argued that he hadn’t done enough research to reach such a conclusion - now I’m not so sure. Frankly, I’m terrified of what will happen over the next few decades.
I am someone who has been directly affected by climate change. 2 years ago a wildfire destroyed the place we had lived for 13 years. Everything was burned. Diaries, poems, pictures, clothing, everything. I would have appreciated a little more about the anger this loss can cause, not just sadness. It is probably easier to just be sad if it hasn’t taken so much away from you, yet. How could the oil companies just ignore what they knew to be true? Greed. The world behaved like there was no tomorrow, and now there isn’t any. Actually, that might be preferable to dying slowly like lobsters in slowly boiling water. Our insurance company wouldn’t give us all our money unless we moved back into the same circumstances we were in before, in the same area. Crazy! I’m very afraid we will encounter yet another fire, the drought is so bad. It would also be better if we weren’t killing off so many species in addition to our own. So the earth may continue to exist, but without birds, fish, animals, people.

How To Live In Harmony With Nature And Reduce Pollution
1. Many Production Which We Do Not Need Actually For Human Beings Has To Be Stopped
We manufacture so many products and it is creating pollution. So if we minimise our products, pollution would be less.
We produce so many things which we do not need, like cold drinks, leather products, potato wafers, chips, fruit juices, chocolates, biscuits, pickles, ice creams, etc.
Cold drinks, fruit juices, pickles, ice creams, etc. Should be cooked at home only.
If we stopped producing this things which are not required for humans, so much pollution could be reduced.
If we colour the clothes pollution occurs. So if we don't colour our clothes, the pollution resulting from colouring the clothes can be stopped. Let everything remain in natural colour.
2. We Should Cook Foods In Its Natural Form
We can cook rice and wheat in our homes and eat it. Rice and Wheat is produced in farms. Then it is packed and transported to big warehouses, then wholesalers buy from them and supply to retail shops.
But if a manufacturing company makes bread from rice and wheat, then to make bread a manufacturing company has to be set up, machines and working staffs are needed. When a company is built many other things are also needed. Then at last a plastic pack is required to pack the breads.
So if we start cooking eatable things in its natural form then we do not need many companies like bread manufacturing company, tomato ketchup, noodles, fruit jam, pizza, burger, etc., the things required for the company and the plastic pack, paper box pack and glass bottles. If done like this, so many companies will not be required and hence less pollution for the world.
Also we could save our money like this. If you buy a packet of bread, it would cost you more money than if you cook wheat and rice in home.
Previously before industrial revolution, we didn't have technology, but our foods were rich with nutrients. Now we have technology, but technology is polluting our foods and our foods are not rich with nutrients, and because of that also we have health problems.
If this is done, then many jobs would be lost. For that many peoples should do farming and they should be given loans if they do not have enough money to start farming on their own.
Food, Medicines, Surgeries and Education's should be made free to the world till the world settles down with farming. After that food, medicines, surgeries and education's should be stopped free to the world.
Many people should study botany subject so that they have knowledge of plants and they should do farming.
Is their any another solution, that humans won't lose jobs and also pollution would decrease. Humans have to take this step certainly instead of going on polluting the earth, making wildlife extinct and also mass extinctions of humans in future.
3. Electricity Pollution
We create electricity from many types of sources like coal, water, etc., but it creates pollution. If electricity created from windmill and solar energy then no pollution occurs in the creation process. But still to manufacture windmill and solar machines pollution would occur.
As I previously said that if we shut down many manufacturing companies which are producing things which are not needed for humans, then the world would not require so much electricity. If less electricity required, then less pollution generated.
4. Could We Stop Drinking Cow's and Buffalo's Milk
Whatever vitamins and nutrients we get from milk, if we can get it from other eatable things, then we can stop drinking cow's and buffalo's milk. As milk has to be packed in glass bottles and plastic packs and then transported to places. All of this can be stopped.
For infants whose mother's have died or mother's who cannot breast feed their infants, only for them cow's and buffalo's milk should be given. We use milk in tea and coffee. Instead of milk we must use lime with tea and coffee or just plain tea and coffee. A lime should be cut into a few pieces and cooked with tea and coffee or something else can be used instead of lime.
5. How Much Should Be The World's Population
Every place should have a single house. No buildings, everything ground floor. If we do this and the whole lands of our planet earth would be occupied one day with homes, farms, forests, schools, hospitals, etc., then we would come to know how much our planet earth can have maximum population.
Once the population is determined, then we have to maintain that population. For example if our earth can have a population of 10 billion peoples, then when the population reaches 10 billion, then everyone should have only one child till the population reaches 9 billion peoples. As if we have only one child then the population decreases. When population is 9 billion peoples, then everyone should have 2 children's till the population reaches 10 billion peoples. After that again we should have only one child. In this way population can be maintained.

My grandfather was a native woodsman in the north woods, hunting, fishing, trapping and foraging as much as possible in a modern life in a modern world, where people have to have a job, a vehicle, insurance, and all that. In the early 60s he told me the world had been warming for a hundred years or more, that in his grandparents day the northern spruce forests were normally buried in snow so deep in winter only the tips of the treetops poked through and how people had to be careful to not fall into the deep snow beneath the trees and great caribou herds roamed south of the St. Lawrence river. He said he'd seen so much change in his lifetime I should understand we have no way of knowing what might happen in the future, but it was definitely going to be hotter. In the 80s I was convinced by a scientist friend that adding CO2 to the atmosphere would more likely cool the planet. Guess gramps was right and the friend was wrong.
This year, as I work on the exterior of my old house and take my walks and bike rides around the area, I'm seeing very few birds and almost no insects. A crow has been hanging around the last few days, calling out periodically, getting no response. I saw a bee the other day, wow! The few I see make their general absence all the more obvious.

Over the last five years, all of the insects have disappeared around my farm and many bird species have disappeared. When I noticed the animals disappearing, I contacted the EPA. I was told that under the current political climate, the EPA could only investigate if a corporation was losing money. The loss of insects means that a lot of my fruit trees don’t produce because they are not getting pollinated. You are now the firth person to describe the same thing to me. One lived in Arizona, one lived in New Mexico and the other lived in the outback of Australia. They were all as frightened as I am about the ramifications of what we are seeing. The land I am on was purchased from the original homesteader by my great Grandfather in 1906. My Grandfather said that up until WW2, the cows would always get out walking over the fences on snowdrifts in the winter. Since WW2, you never know what you might get. I am only 70 and I have seen massive change in my life.
@@jayleeper1512 I'm 65 and in Massachusetts. People in the Connecticut River valley have told me the same. Seems very widespread. When I hear this crow calling outside my house I talk back, "Where are your buddies?" Several years ago there were dozens, all hanging out together.

I had a Erie feeling last summer during the heat dome in BC 🇨🇦. Standing outside in my yard it felt like I was in an oven and there were no signs of life just silence ,no birds ,no dogs barking no wind .
I've never seen the Pacific ocean so still before .it was death for billions of crustaceans

The fires were an awakening in BC. 3 of 5 years? I was told 15 years ago by a guru in India that 95% of humans will die in a climate event soon. Those close to the land survive. I pestered him for more answers. He said when the temperature reaches 50 degrees. I thought that was a silly answer. Where, for how long? His answer didnt make sense. Then the temperature near my place reached 50 degrees and the town burned to the ground the next day. Wow I thought Oh.......he was being very specific to me in his answer perhaps? Then his answer makes sense but I'm still here for the time being. NOW. In my opinion. You can see it. It's not a conspiracy or anything. I Told him we have free will and can change the future. Not this he said. This is done already. Unchangeable. I'm somewhat ready as I watch mankind come to the realization that it is stuck and cant do what it has to to change the system. Yogi was right. There's now ay out of this..It's been a good run though. I feel like I learned the lessons of greed and fear in this life. All our bad news goes back to a fear based decision and greed falls under fear.
In the end , humans will die for the greed of 💲💲💲💲

Thank you for creating this. I've felt so alone as I watch the birdless skies and what few wasps and bees that I see refusing to leave their nests and now almost non-existent. There used to be red wasps in nearly every porch or doorway in Arkansas. This year I watched one buzz around, and one robin, and when the starlings came through the flock was a couple of dozen instead of the thousands that I remember from my middle age. The birds used to line the power lines all winter long, now you might see one or two on the same roads that used to have endless birds perched on them. It's a rare moth that comes to a lighted window, no June bugs, no bugs flying around the street lights. It's all so sad.

I'm 23 years old, I decided to quit my job and separate from my family to move into an intentional community where I can live in a place close to nature and be around people who are also trying to get away from mainstream culture. Wow, there ARE other people out there who think and feel the same way as I do....! Amazing. I am 51 years old and when I was 17 I discovered a WWF brochure predicting what is happening now. I decided not ever to have kids, the best decision I have made in my live. No direct decendents of me will have to suffer. I have at least six friends (and their partners) who made the same choice. But you never hear about not having kids because the world is full. You cannot and should not force people not to have childeren. But since even the most intelligent people I know dont decide not to have kids I have no hope whatsoever humanity will survive.... I have been feeling this sadness for the last 15 years or so. The world is fallling apart. I never thought I would have to deal with what I wanted to protect my childeren from. Acceptance seems the main lesson to learn from this all. And perhaps it is only the people who do not have kids who even dare to think about the state of the world. Maybe knowing your decendents will suffer and likely die is too hard to contemplate.

The arrogance and the greed of the human species has without doubt caught up to us. I can't feel bad for humans as a species, but all other species living by instinct, surviving with the tools they have evolved with over hundreds of millions of years, I genuinely feel remorse for all other creatures. Have you seen the reactions to just wearing a mask during a pandemic for public good? We have to accept that this whole ride is over and that only the ones who have concentrated most of the wealth in their hands will survive the longest.

That dialogue with Stan really exemplifies one of the most glaring faults of the anti-ecological, pro-accumulation worldview: the idea that caring about planetary health somehow makes you "anti-human" or a misanthropist. When, in reality, as Stan and millions upon millions of indigenous people have known for several millennia, we humans are just as much products of the Earth as any other river, mountain, tree, or whatever else! And this principle is essential to any environmentalist movement.
Yeah, I think the problem that this thinking runs into is that what is needed is still perceived to be anti-human by the vast majority of people. What will we have to give up? The improved life expectancy we've attained? Medicine? Access to a larger variety of food and drinks? Transportation to visit family members in another state? The ability to live and work wherever you want? And so on. There are "pro-human" things that are part of the reason why this all is happening and people just don't want to hear what they will have to give up and will not change of their own free will. In a lot of cases, like eating tons of meat, it's just because people don't want to stop and will probably even fight wars in the hope that they won't have to (which will probably end with a collapse of meat production anyways). In some cases, there are people's lives that would end if we don't have the 24/7 access to electricity we've come to expect like people on dialysis. It's about allocating the resources we can use sustainably wisely to maintain essentials, while cutting a lot of the fat to deal with the variability of green energy, while not overexploiting natural resources to produce that energy, etc. I doubt we will approach this wisely ever and even if we do, things will likely still be pretty bad. Hopefully, if people know whatever they do they and their children will lose access to a lot of things anyways, they will start to think more about how they can make a change in their own life that prepares them.

I am 72 and have been an activist all of my life. I am a single mom and have 2 daughters in their 30s, who are environmental scientists working in their field, doing what they can. I have slowed down, however, I am here for them to help in any way that I can...even if it is simply a place of respite for them during their times of great sadness and discouragement when trying to help our Ina Maka.
The Planet will always be here, not only people are suffering so are the animals/wildlife.
It is hard to come to find purpose in a world experiencing collapse. One needs to have some time to process the emotions and loss. Don't take too long though, as now it the time of action. What most do not realize is that there are a "finite" amount of emotions to feel around this and when someone get "right" with feeling the depth of emotions of sadness, grief, anger, etc and realize that they're just a part of being alive and the human experience and learns to embrace these emotions. . .only then can something else can arise. . . I like what the women at the towards the end had to say about "embracing our true eternal nature and tremendous gratitude for all that is". . .which seems to come through allowing one to feel the painful stuff that is part of life.
What is happening is that the entire system is collapsing. We talked a lot but did nothing for the last 40 years when we had the chance to change. Our greed got the better of us.

He'd take the family on vacation to see the reservations. He would always cry and tell us how connected we ARE to Nature, and then tell the stories of what happened to my People and why they now lived on government land with no hunting or rituals allowed unless under the scrutiny of the government. He was forever bringing home injured animals and rehabbing them to return to Nature. As I watched forest after forest get mowed down I'd ask my parents where did the animals go? I'd see hundreds of dead animals on the roads, who were trying to escape with nowhere to go. They'd tell me not to worry. 60 years later, it's deep inside and I will worry. I am watching my "brothers and sisters" the birds and beasts of the wild still trying to escape and find someplace to hide from humans. I am of the belief humans might have belonged here at one time, but our minds have changed, as well as our hearts. We need to go to let Nature heal and recover.

I think most people know we are connected to nature. You dont have to be first nations to get it. Corporations dont care. Stock markets dont care. I live in Florida. The wildlife and plants I used to see all the time all throughout my childhood have all disappeared. I went to the Ocala National Forest on a camping trip a few years ago and saw many of the critters and plants I haven't seen since 45 years ago when I was young. The nights were much cooler there in the forest too than in the cities. I watched in amazement as I was taken back to my youth seeing the miracle of the natural world that I was convinced that I would never see again. It was like seeing an old childhood friend again after years of separation.
A man named Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) comprehended this reality of civilization suffering about 2,500 years ago and spent his life teaching the truth of this human-created suffering. What was unique about Siddhartha was that he offered a solution. A path (the Eightfold Path) that anyone can follow to escape from this suffering. This path was based on logic and science, not religion. It is a path that is not very well known in the "Western" world, but is followed by millions of people in the "Eastern" cultures. This path is an individual endeavor an can not be followed with beneficial results as part of a social consciousness. It is not an easy path because it requires that the person relinquish the concept of the the "self". Much easier in Eastern cultures. Almost impossible in Western cultures.

Thank you for this thought-provoking film. I am not one of those that holds out hope for humans to be able to "figure this out". Reasons:
1)This is a global problem that requires global cooperation. Not going to happen, humans have way too varied agendas, religions, points of view, prejudices against others...no way that humans around the world agree on the nature of the problem, agree on the nature of the solution, and much less actually agree to cooperate on this.
2.) Religion Religion Religion.... too much magical thinking out there in the world. Religion tells humans to use up and exploit the earth and its animals....and dont worry...."god" will save us in the end.

The challenge for me is to retain my humanity and have faith that that our Creator is still with us to guide us through this troubled time. Everything is sacred. Change has always been the constant. Death for everything is followed by rebirth as everything is eternal. Only the form changes. We are One.
So glad to see Stan Rushworth interviewed at length in this documentary. His indigenous wisdom, knowledge and guidance is a gift and light for us all and absolutely essential to know.
In Nth Queensland you used to see dingoes and wallaby's everywhere in the bush. Wildflowers grew in far more variety of species, the Wet was MUCH longer and wetter, and the Winter was longer and cooler - MUCH cooler. There was much more of the native grass species. There were more butterflies and way more wild ducks, geese, wrens and wagtails, and lorikeets and Black cockatoos. At night the creeks had clouds of thousands of fireflies - and now there are none. Most people don't even notice the changes because they live in towns and cities. It's so sad.
But most people don't even notice or care.

Thank you for doing this video. I'm on my way, in the middle of minimalizing my belongings and leaving my home in Hawaii, moving to a sailboat, and spending the rest of my life trying to help solve or mitigate these problems. I almost feel guilty buying an old boat with all that comes with that, but it's a start and allows me more flexibility to be in nature while having the flexibility to explore what can be done and where I can make the most impact. I became aware of what I termed as "the unsanity of humanity" when I was about 6 yrs old. Back then it was not specifically the climate, it was the general state of conscious awareness in everyone. It felt as if my species was callous and blind, thinking mainly of itself as seperate from the rest. I was the last of 6 children and there were 3 teenagers in the house as i grew up... that made everything pretty clear. I am 53 now and dying myself, I enjoyed my life as fully as I could even while carrying this immense weight. The effect of this realizattion at such a tender age was devastating to my psyche, yet i managed through it all to go on just the same. Presence is our greatest power, the stillness by the pond is an excellant example of entering the now, zen, the end of suffering, heaven right here in the midst of us.

I have many equal thoughts. My mom died this year of cancer and I was sitting quietly all the last 14 days of her life and contemplated. And its birth and death when some of the most profund and deeper truths are offered to the ones who wants to listen. And one truth is that everything is ending. And starting. A cycle forever. So part of that truth means we're going to end after all. All of us. Every single one. We are just in denial of that fact. I had this kind of revelation moment. Same applies for climate change and its effects on our ways of life. After all it will all end and each person in it as well. We seem to be kind of surprised to hear that fact but that just peaks volumes about our destruction and denial. Our way life is going to end? Yes, and so does everything. So what you do with that? Nihilism and hedonism is a bad choice for my taste. Listening and taking in quietly, living a life that I can look at myself in the mirror and hold up to my moral standards and observing beauty is my choice. There will be something after us, but that will not be us.

Yes I have noticed the decline in certain bird species, or you just don't see them at all now. The decline in the pollinators, the clearing of critical marsh lands for farm use or urban population, poisoning our lakes and oceans. MANKIND is it's own worst enemy.
I won my Garden Club essay with a piece about climate change and global warming. I knew then, like I know now, that we’re psychologically incapable as a species of even unpacking the issues around climate. Capitalism will be the end of us. It’s unavoidable without drastic changes, which aren’t happening. Soak up every second you can, because our time here is fleeting and precious.

what i love about this doccie - cos we have all seen so many doccies about climate change - is that i see the importance of processing death. many humans are dying from ecological disasters already & it’s escalating.
one thing that i cling to in my conversations with middle class people is that we can’t live in the same way anymore. it’s not just that we’re propagating inequality and natural destruction, it’s our own extinction that we’re fueling. literally.
i stopped eating fish & beef when i was 17. it wasn’t at all hard. the earth can’t support 300 million tonnes of humans, 100 million tonnes of wild animals AND 700 million tonnes of domestic animals. subsistence fishing by non middle class communities is sustainable, fish in supermarkets and restaurants is not. as middle class people, which is everyone with wifi & youtube, i believe we can convince each other to walk away from beef & fish. (sheep & pigs will follow as soon as the consciousness flips - chickens, poor miserable chickens, could perhaps be the last stage of transformation.
without lifestyle changes, of which diet is primary, we can’t access the truth about our future. we’re just pretending everything is going to be ok, like a hollywood movie. it’s not. be the change.
Watching this for a second time. There are a lot of us who have been talking about these issues for many many years, and yet this video only got 90,000 views. Think of that in relationship to the population of the world. A drop in the bucket. We will still continue talking about the arctic, and all the issues that we are facing as a species, however how can there be much hope when we humans have essentially fouled the nest. We all know that we are personally going to become extinct, but that doesn't stop us from living. In fact, the imminent specter of death makes us more alive, adds urgency and passion. It also reduces the pettiness to an absolute minimum.

I haven't watched this, and I don't know that I will. I'm sure it's brilliant, but its too sad. UA-cam presented it to me, but I already know about these things, and I've accepted finally that there is nothing I can do. I've decided instead to live in the moment. I'm in my later years, and I will not spend it miserable and in mourning, or beating my head against the wall trying to change somebody. I will enjoy myself as much as I can for what time I have left, and that's it. My sad condolences to future generations.

As someone who has the luxury of international travel, you cant help but realise how dire the situation is every time you go snorkeling. There is no coral, there are no fish.... its all gone already. its an udnersea desert.
The main problem is getting society to accept directions from scientists. It has been one hundred years of chemistry without the industrial pollution restrictions imposed to survive. Treaties instituted by scientists and ratified by Congress and USSR and 180 countries did not have any effect on industrial pollution.

it's causing despair in the west now bc our leaders are barely mentioning it. in US one political party denies it's even happening or that it is even a problem if it is. meanwhile corporations continue their chokehold over it all and politicians are bought out by them often it seems. if our leaders, if corporations would start admitting it so it can all be brought into the light so that we can all organize a crisis response globally, that would end the despair, the learned helplessness.
it's also affecting the poor in the US now, especially, the storms, the fires, the people who were red zoned into neighborhoods with no trees which get significantly hotter during heatwaves.
it's affecting the younger generations who when aware see the end of the world as in their futures
Thanks for creating this documentary. I've been concerned about this for well over a decade, but a lot of my peers told me that I was being silly and that climate change was all a myth. It's really scary what the future holds. I don't even want to bring children into the world, not that I don't want to get married or not have children someday, I always wanted those things, but I don't think it's possible with the way the climate is going. It would be cruel to bring a child into a dying world.
Exactly my thoughts. If i had a child, i would want her/him to run barefoot, swim, feel the sunlight, breathe the air, climb trees, play outdoors with many friends, things i once got to do as a child...

Went up to the Arctic a few decades ago to learn the contemporary and traditional ways of subsistence hunting and fishing from Inuit. Even in the 1970's, the writing was on the wall for what we were doing to the Earth, our home. Did not know any others who thought similarly - until now. Knowing there are others like-minded makes all the difference to continue a moral life.

I was always under the impression that it was already too late from a decade ago. We have done absolutely nothing to avert this problem, even when covid came along and the skies became clearer, we still didnt grab the chance to really change things. Humans will not budge unless its their own house burning. Its always too late before something is done.

To be aware like this requires a pretty wide knowledge of science, a healthy department of critical thinking, courage to override psychological coping mechanisms which would perhaps wisely deny or ignore the truth, enough maturity to qualify as a planetary citizen, and a good deal of heartfulness. You don’t need a wide knowledge of science to trust science..much more important is to see the value in getting uncomfortable with our predicament and yet not despair completely. And that requires a great deal of self awareness and control over our emotional responses. I think more people every day are becoming aware..
Maybe this helps us find each other so we can be counted. Maybe we are many.

Achingly bittersweet documentary. Yes, climate change is HERE and no one wants to be the first person to talk loudly about it. We have to get over that “hump” and then things will get better. We can’t stop climate change but we can mitigate it. Just a shame that a lot of people will want to keep their head in the sand until the very last moment.
