Is global governance in crisis or failing?
Astrophysicist Martin Rees suggests that we’re unlikely to see 2100 if we don’t start taking collective action now to meet the formidable challenge facing humanity. The response timescale for contending with catastrophic risks presented by an increasingly fragile and unstable biosphere, intensified by a hyper-concentration of wealth and power among a few individuals, and exponentially growing technology - is rapidly diminishing.
This podcast is a space for dialogue, reflection and open inquiry. We hope to foster well-informed principled and pragmatic visions of how we can make tomorrow better. We propose discarding poorly-informed utopian or dystopian views to begin the hard work of imagining "imperfect utopias" which can inform action towards living better together on a finite planet - underpinned by a fundamentally fairer, more sustainable and viable global governance system for the future.

Oliver, Olivia and Rachel – Studying Global Governance and Ethics
Join me and some of our amazing UCL students as we delve into the world of global governance!
Olivia Crosby, Oliver Parker, and Rachel Dodimead, all part of the MSc in Global Governance and Ethics in the Department of Political Science at University College London, chat about what it’s like studying here, their favourite moments from the year, and their aspirations for the future.
We talk about their year full of discoveries, heaps of reading, hard work, and an eventful international trip to Geneva. As they wrap up their classes and start their research projects (and look for jobs!), it’s the perfect time to reflect on everything they’ve learned and what makes their group (and global governance) so special.

I’m finding this discussion late but I’m really loving it so far. The untangling of various narratives and the identification of certain ideological limitations has me very engaged. Thanks!
Can’t believe this guy is nearly 80. What an intelligent articulate man.
Rock on!!
🤘
Thank you to all involved for this thought-provoking conversation. I feel very grateful to be privy to such dialogues at these pivotal times, especially considering the almost total impossibility of engaging others on these topics in the "real" world. My sense is that "we" cannot "do" anything to address the metacrisis as such, and that we will be forced to ride the wave of consequences that will result from our actions as a globalized techno-industrial civilization of clever apes in overshoot of our environment who are deluded as to the nature of reality. I can understand why that particular framing may be unpalatable and could be considered unhelpful, but I suspect it to be the case and, therefore, what needs to be confronted. At this stage, what I intuit is that the best we can hope for is a new smaller-scale collective identity and with that a falling back to a new line of defense that could perhaps be held, bringing with us what wisdom and knowledge can be salvaged. Trying to steer this deranged leviathan towards a healthy and holistic understanding of our place in the world and a sustainable modus operandi appears to be an impossible task, although I certainly applaud any brave individuals who wish to take it on. Meanwhile, these conversations are of great merit in that they help us to frame, model and understand the nature, dynamics and multiple facets of the crisis we are facing. Many thanks again.
DeColonization is essential Amerikkka and DuhWest still petulantly insist and demand Priviledges and Entitlements and Resource Consumption and ecological desecration FAR beyond their legitimate share. That is _despite_ education That is in flagrant gratuitous denial of knowledge and science and education Even in the narrow window beginning with the Exxon scientists calculations and analysis of impending Global Heating and commensurate Climate Disruption ... Which has been twisted and contorted into full-on denialism and deliberate PsyOps - by well educated elitist Actors. To what extent could the mouthbreathing knuckledraggers of MAGA et al be transformed by even the most sophisticated and effective education ?

Extinction is not a bug in the life of a species, it is a feature.
Climate control is a lie people the earth has been doing it's thing since the begining , if you want to stop the emissions from affecting the world then stop cutting down the rain forest and othe trees of the world , Morons .
I'm going with the Nobel Prize winning Physicist who ain't worried. If he is wrong, the Earth will still be here and regenerate itself....just like George Carlin spells out. Trust the comedian rather than a wanker in an Oil based Orange shirt with Oil glasses on.
The very title! Show the debate on this please that is real science? What is the point anyway when countries like China are not on board with this? I want proof which there is none, there are records for around two hundred years, the world is over 4 billion years old show the proof from a billion years ago so we can make up our own minds! Oh you can’t!
Our global crisis” are all caused by greed. The power that has been able to be acquired by modern capitalists. The capitalist have been able to accumulate the wealth to buy our sell out , politicians . Theses owned politicians are not allowed to raise taxes on these corporations and their owners. In fact somehow the wealthy have found ways not to pay taxes at all. We are looking at the next stages in the capitalists securing their wealth and power via totalitarian means. Where the oligarchs make all the decisions and the public is disenfranchised. We will see The rise of the police state, rise in loss of privacy, with social credit scores. The right wing think tanks have taken over the American mind. The American Dream has been stolen and these elites have to cover their tracks. The billionaires have taken control of all the media and levers of power and they will not let the truth of what happened to the American Dream and why so many If is still live from paycheck to Paycheck. The elites are in the process of making our slavery complete. This will preserve and protect their wealth and power for many generations. This next world order will be shoved down the throats of all Americans.
We need to watch each other grow is all there is to remember, Profound ❤.
Daniel’s closing words are brilliant.
A little hard to follow but glad you are doing this work and really hope it is useful for younger folks to follow upon.
The power of 1 to incite change is immense. One cell phone built Apple. It just did it millions and millions of times.
We need to engender a sense of deep ecology and everyone needs to take personal responsibility to lower their carbon footprint. A wartime industrial footing is coming. It is one major system collapse away.
"Global Government Futures"?? Seriously 🙈

Eye opening discussion. Nate is able to describe our global predicament in such a meaningful way, and I wish this video had 1 million views.
I'm sorry I gotta add another comment, I'm awed by this dude. I don't think I've ever heard such inspired intellectual gibberish before. Like this is a dare or something, and he's been tripping on peyote and glued to the internet for seven days straight, Clockwork Orange style, and it's all just pouring out of him. Some of the continued verbal highlights, to wit.... 'teacherly authority', the 'epistemic elite', and the real humdinger, 'epistemic nihilism'. I think I agree with him, though, on his little critique of the muddled minds of by-now quite demented digital natives, completely given over to the throes of epistemic nihilism, irresistibly online and of course totally insecure and desperate to fit in with the cool crowd and not get canceled. And so they're completely lost souls at this point. Though it's hard to be sure what the hell he's talking about. Oh, and I don't want leave out 'intergenerational transmission'. Another impressive zinger. Referring of course to the purported previous state of affairs in western society, where children knew exactly where they stood, and would have the same reliable occupation as their parents to one day step into, which no longer persists today. I don't know if that's really true at all, but that's intergenerational transmission. Anyway, this dude is awesome. His blathering definitely grows on you. He must have been high while doing this podcast, without question. As I write, he's now comparing zoomers, 'Gen Z,' to a new breed of genetically designed superhumans, if you can imagine that. And we are witnessing a 'speciation event', with the emergence of this confused and rudderless generation of kids raised on the internet. Hell effin' yeah!
What in God's earth am I listening to? Who is this person?? I realize academics don't have much to offer, and they're mainly there to write some book, with some minimally plausible and defensible thesis, to be quickly swept away into the abyss after they manage to keep the wolves from the door before the next publish or perish deadline..... But god damn this was a full hour of some pretty serious word salad. Almost incomprehensible, but it seemed like his main thought was if only elites had a better epistemic handle on things, that maybe we could avert disaster. Wonderful. And the peasants too. The regular folk could stand to have a little better epistemic appreciation, or something. Epistemic being a pretentious word for 'knowledge'. So all these corrupt elites are just not knowledgeable enough! If only they were better informed we'd presumably be just fine and dandy..... Total disaster and collapse here we come is all I would have to add after listening to that. No wonder he was tittering so nervously. Good grief....
I love Nate, and his channel is great, but I've yet to hear one person offer and any advice on how to handle this that's worth a shit. The only thing that occurs to me is we are really, really screwed, and society could indeed collapse, whatever that means exactly, and all these well-to-do, comfortable and complacent liberal types are simply not going to be up to the challenge. We're encouraged to face up to this unimaginable prospect, but not be overwhelmed by it, learn how to shut it out, and basically go back to our undemanding lives, but throw in some nature walks, and maybe spend less time on social media, or something. He even goes so far as to suggest that we not to try to, or look forward to eliminating all-important, all-consuming social status, which is most definitely what got us into this mess in the first place, nor encourage a much more egalitarian world, but rather to maintain precious status hierarchies, but somehow do it without destroying the earth. By making gardeners the new alpha males. WTF is he talking about? So it's looking pretty grim, if the worst comes to pass. Because I don't see liberals coming anywhere close to an appropriate response to full-blown societal collapse. All I ever hear is gloating over the incredibly comfortable lives they've lived, and an inability to let go of them, even though they now realize they may have to. Which you don't hear from the likes of a more working-class entity like Extinction rebellion. And enough about the dopamine as well. High self-esteem is going to be the least of anyone's concerns in the hard times ahead.
I've been listening to Nate for a while . I agree with him on the direction of travel and the likely outcomes. I am an engineer who has studied thermodynamics, considered energy density and quality etc etc . Long story short we need to bring about large managed decline in human population and we need to derive as much of our energy as possible from nuclear fission and implement other " clean" technologies. At some point in the future we will probably see sustained reduction in the quality of human life on this planet as we have failed to do the things I have mentioned. I do strongly agree we need to reduce the obsession with some of the consumer BS and other pointless crap but we still need to power the hospital cancer proton therapy unit and the HVAC and all the other many many things which are not pointless rubbish but which improve quality of life.
Care to expand in more detail on this managed decline in human population? I think there's only one chance for the human race, outside of any managed population decline, which I would surmise would amount in practice to a truly horrific mass genocide of the population, if you're up for that.... and that's surviving on way less consumption, and still having a recognizable, halfway decent quality of life, as you seem to allude to. They say we can live sustainably if we can somehow get by on 20% of what we currently consume, or something around that number. But of course that would require heroic levels of self-restraint and personal initiative, on the part of your typically ravenously ambitious and self-interested western strivers. Especially white-collar liberal types. Personally I just don't think they have it in them. American professional culture is pure poison at this point in history, and it's almost impossible to imagine these sorts of people responding with the vigor, realism and self-sacrifice required. Just no way in hell. In truly hard times, the meek will finally inherit the earth, and all hell will likely break loose.....
AWESOME CONVERSTATION. Daniel is just pure wisdom. Took me so many years to get a rough grasp on the world and now suddenly I feel everything is so clearly articulated
Ideas that can change lives and change the world
Concise and grounded.
Do you guys really give money grants to help the poor
What he's alluding to is a civilization very much like what was depicted in the movie Avatar, which I realise is a bit corny, but it's a handy metaphor for how to exist on your planet sustainably that was widely ingested. Also take into account the unwillingness to even Don a cloth mask during a worldwide pandemic or the hissy fits being thrown over Americans switching from a gas to electric induction stove tops, and you can see how completely futile this all is. A very few will survive the storm, and will have to deal with a slowly healing planet for generations, but maybe THEY will arrive at a better understanding of how to exist here sustainably.
Disappointed that a Canadian is a victim-perpetrator of the crime of vocal fry.
I was a kid in the 70s when I recognized that the world was much more interconnected and complex than anyone was willing to acknowledge. Partly, of course, it's due to people's affinity for simplicity and easy explanations. But it is also a bug of the scientific method, where the penchant for isolating single variables in the effort to understand and comprehend the world is not just a veritable brick wall for dealing with multifaceted issues, it results in a perverse hostility to anything that isn't simplisticly presentable.
No o
Really learned a lot here. Great insight.
