Greetings from Finland, the newest member of NATO🇫🇮
Welcome mate. If they mess with you, then we'll mess with them.
Yes. Welcome.
Thanks 😎👌🏼
@@grahamstubbs4962 Cant promise anything, maybe if there is something left you can have some as well.
@@KerienShien I watched a video about Simo Häyhä recently.
I'm a fairly decent rifleman, but you wouldn't want this lad playing for the other team.
The moose live everywhere in Finland and the 'weird looking one' was a one year old baby :) They grow up to 1500 pounds and are pretty scary when crossing the highway. And didn't you know we're in NATO now? :)
was coming to say "They are everywhere" xD
They like colder environment but not too cold. Canada (minus most northern parts), Fennoscandia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, northern Poland, northern Belarus and Russia (minus most northern parts).
I believe the the European variant is called an elk. Elks grow somewhat smaller and wear less majestic antlers than their North American cousins.
@@ristoh4732 Nope... A moose is a moose, be it in say Alaska or Europe. Elk is a completely different beast... however you might be confused simply cause the swedes call moose an Älg.
@@hematula1 Ouch! I stand corrected
Moose are very common all over Finland, well except Åland :) Nearly had a heart attack once, when in the middle of the night a moose was just hanging out on the porch of the cottage I was in :D
I had closer look of moose back in the days. Hit one with my car.
Näin tän kommentin ennen kuin katoin videon ja ihmettelin jo että miten Mooses tähän liittyy :D
@@OriginalThisAndThat I've encountered three mooses during my 6 years as a taxi driver on the Western side of the Baltic, at one occation, one crossed the road around 300m in front of the car, the other occation at another place was a moose doe with a year old calf standing beside the road in a clear cut patch in the woods.
I've had a lot more and closer encounters with boars whil driving, but only roe deer has jumped out too close to avoid hitting them😢
Plural of moose is moose. Mooses löytyy raamatusta :D
I was APC “Pasi” X180/185 driver in my military service. In offroad training we confronted male moos in rut. Our training officer (skappari) made some moose mating sounds to it and the male moose cot aggressive against our armored personnel carrier. Officer started to command me to retreat every time when the moose try to scare off our Pasi-APC. I will always remember how hyped the moose looked when he had defeated us and he was king off the forest. Officer was hunter and commented that moose is beautiful and goddam stupid animal.
The early shots were from Norway, mountains being a dead giveaway. No mountains in Finland. And the Humvees were from the US forces in the exercise. There were more international exercises in Finland during the NATO accession process. There were definitely some specifically chosen shots in the reel, like the bit where they were loading munitions with forklifts (unlike Russia, who do it by hand. No containers, no pallets, no forklifts...) Actually a full company (or more?) of US Marines logistics troops were in Finland for two months or so to train logistics and interoperability, so they're definitely laying the groundwork for a whole lot of big exercises.
What would a 'big exercise' look like in comparison to what's been seen before? Like compared to Joint Viking 2023 or Cold Response?
@@melrakan we'll find out eventually. Of course it was preparation for an actual deployment as well. Marines are one of the faster response forces US has, as far as I understand.
Thanks for the info!
@@melrakan it would look exactly the same as those, just held in Finland?
At 1:30 in the video it's taken from Rolløya looking at Andørja (Nothern Norway, Troms). I know because I see Andørja in my window :) The view point it's a 10min walk from here.
1:15 Surely not Finnish, we don't have any Humwees. They are US troops training with Finns up north ("Cold Response").
2:58 target drone
3:20 Lots of moose in Finland. Reindeer only in the northern parts.
4:25 Hughes MD500 so pretty much the same as Little Bird. They are part of the ground forces, air forces only operate fixed wing aircraft.
4:30 Scar, helicopters, multicam. Must be the special jaegers, from Utti as you said.
6:00 The Finnish navy is small. Consisting mostly of minelayers, minesweepers and fast attack crafts armed with missiles. Will get a lot more potent in the near future when we get the four Pohjanmaa class corvettes.
6:50 A big(ish) international training with 18 helicopters: ua-cam.com/video/RNOmpVDWRaU/v-deo.html
Sweet info, thanks!
There is no much need for large navy. Coastal vessels will do most of the job in our area.
Guys using SCARs are Utti jaeger regiments operators, they're a special force unit, pretty much best of the best, if I recall correctly.
Eh, id say theyre in the middle. The battle divers (taistelusukeltaja) and the Radio-scouts (sissiradisti) are considered the most hardcore by the natives here.
@@kanggoo57 Erikoisjääkärikomppania (special jäger comany ? ) is made of professionals not conscripts, so i'd say they are the real deal, ofc there is ERTO (Erikoistoiminta Osasto in the navy thats is similar. They both start their training in Utti, then they go different ways airborne operations and martime operations. It takes about 10 years to be fully trained.
@@juhakinnunen3247 well yeah professionals are professionals. pretty sure the combat camera is a conscript thing though, so i was only kind of mentioning conscription special fields, as you can join Erikoisjääkärikomppania after your service if youve gone to AUK or RUK, no matter what you did when you did your service.
Finland is located rather high in the north 😊 Half of Canada is to the south of Helsinki's latitude. Moose live all over the country and they are frigging huge when you see them from close distance. Almost hit one in lifted Range Rover and still the moose looked like it could just step over the car.
Finnish navy mostly consists coastal fleet with fast attack boats and missile boats. Mine layers and and mine clearing crafts. It's really small fleet but suited for shallow coast line filled with small islands. We are replacing aging missile boats with 4 new Corvette class all-rounder ships . 4 is such a small number thou
We need the Swedes in NATO too. Then the defense of the Baltic Sea is secured. Except for Åland, which would be a big problem if it were invaded.
@@dennislindqvist8443 But Åland is strong and independent island that needs no Finland 😂
(They're probably not going to let that demilitarization come to an end if it's up to them)
Not sure if it has changed since 2012, but when I was in navy, the main purpose and goal of the navy was to secure and protect sea trading routes and merchant vessels.
So that we could still be able to trade and supply via seas during war. I believe that goal can be achieved with smaller fleets.
Also ships are extremely expensive to construct and maintain and require a lot of men to operate them, so it is not realistic to have large fleets.
Small agile boats and ships works the best on our territorial waters.
That big ship is USS Kearsarge and it took part of the multi national practice in the Baltic Sea last year. I guess that's where all of those Ospreys came from. Very impressive ship. 😎
On the training: The total reservist training went up a lot in 2022. Also most large exercises had an international component. Most common was US troops, but also many with UK and Swedish troops and then few exercises with some other.
Today USA forces from Estonia came to Finland with Abrams and Bradleys to Arrow 23. You are wellcome. Stronger together. 🇫🇮🇺🇸
I believe they came THROUGH Estonia, from Poland 👍
I have great memories of US Marines, I was in RDF CBRN (now in reserve) and we did training op for a week with US Marine CBRN and I got blasted out drunk for the first time, they kept buying us Finns drinks and even at barracks it went on, funny thing is that our lieutenant colonel bought us the first round.
Nothing but great memories, sad it was only a week tho.
Now we have American tank batallion exercising here in Finland, Abrahams and stuff :D
And with that sand camo, they don't stand a chance! ;-)
@@-NEH- paint too expencive❤
there is over 80 000 mooses in finland and they are pretty much everywhere lol
Moose like to hang out like 500 meters from my house at the edge of the forest. Lots of mooseflies also come with them at the fall so going to forest during that time is not so nice 🪰
3:00 Ah yes the Tactical MØØsen-Regiment. Absolute terror on lightly armored vehicles.
6:09 I think it's mostly minelayers / mine clearers and missile boats. There's a whole new class of corvette currently in the works though.
While Finland is not as cold as Alaska, because of influence of Gulf Stream, it's pretty north. It's practically same position as Alaska. It winter is quite long and continously below freezing. Also there's very little sunlight during the winter. Large part of the north is above arctic circle, which means sun don't rise at all in the middle of the winter.
5:40 There's firefighter engineers who focus on restoring troop functionality and preventing personnel and materiel damage. In Finnish, suojelupioneeri (direct translation: protection engineers). We are ready to fight, extinguish fires, lay down a quick minefield, and are thoroughly trained to deal with CBRN threats. You'll recognize from our insignia: a gas mask.
I hadn't even realized that until you mentioned it, but yeah, those Reels definitely show where FDF is going. This reel shows the cross-training with our allies VERY well. There has definitely been an uptick, and I'm betting that's only going to get more active.
4:39 is from this "battle display" for media featuring erikoisjääkärit (special jägers): ua-cam.com/video/RbmGkMVMPuo/v-deo.html
6:46 is from "Heavy lift": ua-cam.com/video/RNOmpVDWRaU/v-deo.html&
Finnish navy is actually pretty big. Ships are small since they are tailored to fight in archipelago. In the video there were coastal jaegers and finnish combat divers (SEALS in US Army) who are spesificially trained to fight in finnish archipelago
I'm not finnish but I gotta say the finnish army is quite good. Theyve always had the treath of russia so thats a thing.
As a Finn, having been through the basic army ( 8 months in Niinisalo) and 5 times in repetitions, it really raises the stakes when you know who you are training for.
"wierema" sounds pretty finnish. sure you dont have any finn in your lineage?
That weird looking moose was a baby moose and there are tens of thousands of whitetail deers in Finland that were transplanted by Finnish immigrants from Minnesota during 1930's ! The current strain originated from 16 individuals that were bred in Southern Finland !
The police unit was definitely the police readiness unit ”Bear”. Which is comparable to FBI swat/HRT teams I guess. National jurisdiction and can be deployed to any threatning situation but also works in prevention of organized crime and countrr terrorism. Originally the groundwork for their training and tactics was laid in co-operation with the german GSG 9. We very very rarely hear anything about these guys in the media same as with the borderguard special teams.
As a another fin can confirm this. And also most of the time we see "them" its actually local "VaTi" (Vaativien Tilanteiden ryhmä). Who is part of the local police unit and also do normal police work. But is trained sort of SWAT unit enviroment, if my memory serves these units are all in major cities in Finland. Where as "Bear unit" or karhuryhmä works on national level.
@@Kuutti_original Karhu operates in all of Finland, but Valo-79(Vati team based in Oulu) takes mostly care of northern Finland when there is a real hurry.
The Humvees are not Finnish, they are American : ) Some of the helicopters (Chinook?) are RAF, some are US Marines (you can see the text if you pause it). The Ospreys are American, F35s are probably Norwegian. At 6:22 (in this video) you can see the insignia (and the reflection); not sure of that but I think UK led Joint Expeditionary Force. There are dudes with Swedish armed forces uniforms. Ship at 5:49 is American (USS Kearsarge?) Just to name a few I happened to notice.
This is not a coincidence. Today Finland is a member of Nato, but during the time of release of the original FDF video, it might have had a message (to "someone"): Finland has allies... and powerful ones. Don't push your luck.
F-35s are F-35B from UK. 👍
great content dude
Never mess with the finnish army, they really tough, also mentaly.
I wish I could have taken part in these big exercises during my conscription. In 2009 it was pretty quiet on that front but obviously last few years it's on another level entirely.
Yeah there's around 85'000 moose in Finland, about 400'000 in Sweden, 30'000 in Norway, around half a million mooses in Scandinavia.. run into them when out metaldetecting - they can be quite intimidating :)
Nice to watch some combat camera showreels from time to time to keep my will to stay in the reserves ever so high
This year's Arrow excercise is about to take place in Niinisalo and there are some US Abrams' too. Saw them yesterday in Pori and apparently they spent the night here as today they were stuck in traffic jam (some unrelated accident).
With the high speed dudes, if they're wearing normal multicam they're special jaegers from Utti, if they're wearing multicam tropic, they're from the naval special operations detachment.
Finnish friends forces ❤ @9:15 much love 😊
I am so Happy Finland being in NATO. We have been training with allied forces and there is one going on right now. We are ready If confronted! Love your videos bro! Keep it going! Rgds "conscript 1986"
As a anti-aitrrcraft dude in Finnish reserve I must admit that FDF Combat Camera is just friggin' great.

We have so much more mooses than reindeer. Here in Finland. Reindeers are only in northern Finland and Mooses are everywhere.

That helicopter scene is very “Vietnam era” reminiscent when battalions were moved at once by Hueys😅
For real!
It reminded me of the start of scene from Apocalypse Now, where Kilgore orders the 9th Cavalry to attack the Viet Cong. They fly towards the Viet Cong with helicopters and blast Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries from loudspeakers. Later Kilgore says one of the most famous war movie lines: "I love the smell of napalm in the morning."
awesome video Theo as always, have good time in uk bro, +1like full view 💪💪🤙🤙

Good to see you dude! 👊😎
Finnish coastline is mostly shallow rocky archipelago. It's one reason we have mostly small missile boats and mine layers. I'd say it's not good idea to send a landing party.
4:47 they were Special Jaegers from Utti
OK so i don't know if anyone mentioned it already but the reindeer are exclusive to northern finland/lapland. moose are everywhere in finland.
I saw abrams being transferred on trucks today in helsinki

Yeah, cool video, I like specially that "little" hint in the end of the video.😏🇺🇸🇫🇮😁
Aurora 23 happening right now, really big joint practice.
At 4:40 that smaller one must be the pilot traineer helicopter were the pilots for NH90 are trained. That trainee helicopter also pretending to be a attack helicopter in some exercises as Finland do not have Apache kind of stuff...
Finland has 7 MD500: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_equipment_of_the_Finnish_Army#Army_aviation
Nato joining is done now. As far as most significant add on to Finnish Defense Force recently must be Rafael made---> David Sling from Israel--jointly developed by Raytheon. Also RK rifles are being replaced by homemade AR variant along with sniper rifles that NYPD also purchased. Some corvettes coming for the navy.
(Moose are all over the place, they are just big and kind of dumb and tasty, sometimes drunk and belligerent. But reindeers were used in "arctic warfare" ww2, combat reindeer is kind of cool/efficient :) )
Hyvää huomenta komppania !!!!!
According to Wikipedia the Finnish Navy has 246 ships in one naval fleet, the coastal fleet. But to be honest, it's mostly pretty small ships like minelayers, minesweepers and fast attack crafts armed with missiles.
Moose is very common wild animal in Finland. Reindeers mostly live only from Arctic Circle towards the North. Finland tries to keep the moose population numbered around 65000. Without hunting, the population size would rapidly go over 100 thousand.
one of amazing memories from my FDF time was when we had an exercise and we were laying communication line trough forest and tiny moose laid down and was scared when we passed by less than 10 meters, i was just wondering that where is the mother moose as it could end up badly when meeting her.
I remember when I was on a guard in a foxhole in the middle of the night, and not slept very much in the previous days. Then I saw a fox coming towards me and thought I was hallucinating. I poked the fox with my rifle to make it go away, and only then understood it was real.
Late apologizes for him/her/them.
Some info about the Finnish Navy on this video: "Hamina-class missile boat | The protector of the Finnish coasts". This new Dutch made video might interest you. It's not full-on military, but a sort of a Dutch person's tourist trip into the Finnish defense policy and history viewed through the mostly regular relating Finnish persons she meets: "KNOKKEN in de BARRE KOU FINLAND || Mika reist langs de oostgrens van de NAVO".
finish moose live also in usa colorado. his name is mikko rantanen :) thanx to great reaction and have wonderful weekend.
Finland has 20 NH-90 helicopters. They are used to support special forces or, for example, move combat units from one battle area to another.
If you find anything on the Aurora 23 exercise it'd be cool.
Moose live everywhere in Finland, last year we shot almost 50k moose, and this year the same amount, after hunting season there should be about 150k left
5:05-5:09 Im pretty sure those are swedes. I'm guessing alot of this footage is from joint exercises. Cool video!

1:54 "I have seen some serious shit" or is pervitin still in use at some units? :D
The guy with the scar is from The Utti Jaeger Regiment
Finnish navy consists of smaller vessels, largest 1300 ton Hämeenmaa-class that is build for minelaying and anti-sub actions.
Pride of Finnish navy are 250 ton Hamina class fast attack missile boats.
Since Finnish navy is not build for projecting force over distance, but for coastal defense, so larger vessels are not necessary.
Hamina class is small, stealthy and maneuverable enough to hide around small coastal islands and launch missile strikes, then scoot to another location.
It's not about size of the ships in fight, it's about size of the missiles.
Those guys around 4:30-4:55 were Utti jägers, you got it right! They have a longer video from last year: ua-cam.com/video/RbmGkMVMPuo/v-deo.html
They been doing a lot more of these big trainings since putin invaded Ukraine. Awesome to see them standing with our guys. Allies may mean what it used to if things keep going the way it is in this crazy world.

Lot of moose here in Finland and mostly they live in the forest. Haha👍
Yes, and they also move completely silent through the forest. Happened to me a couple of times, I was minding my own business in the forest and suddenly I realised a huge male moose snuck up behind me and was there watching what I'm doing. You get startled. A bear is the king of the forest but moose is the second and you don't want to mess with them and their big horns.
The Humvees you saw at the beginning belong to the US Marine, Finland does not have these vehicles. For several years now, Sweden and Finland have had joint exercises, and soldiers from the United States are also included. Although neither when Finland and Sweden were NATO members.
Right now, a large exercise is taking place in Sweden called Aurora 23, and 26,000 soldiers from 14 NATO countries and 700 from the United States are participating in the exercise. The exercise, which lasts for 3 weeks, includes the Marines, the Air Force and the Army.

The general shown retired in 2019 and he served as deputy minister of defense from 2019 until 2021.
The Kornet missile is highly regarded in the Greek Army and is considered to be more effective than the American TOW (also in service in large numbers in the Greek army), especially if it has to travel over water.
