@@LordelX That is an Interesting statement. So...does that mean you need to be a Sith to defeat a Sith? Do you have to go to the dark side? Or...perhaps, you need to be a Jedi? "And what do you sacrifice?"
    "Calm.
    Kindness, kinship.
    Love.
I've given up all chance at inner peace.
I've made my mind a sunless place.
I share my dreams with ghosts.
I wake up every day to an equation I wrote 15 years ago from which there's only one conclusion; I'm damned for what I do.
My anger, my ego, my unwillingness to yield, my...my eagerness to fight, they've set me on a path from which there is no escape.
I yearned to be a savior against injustice without contemplating the cost and by the time I looked down, there was no longer any ground beneath my feet.
What is my...what is my sacrifice?
I'm condemned to use the tools of my enemy, to defeat them.
I burn my decency for someone else's future.
I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I'll never see.
And the ego that started this fight will never have a mirror or an audience or the light of gratitude.
    So what do I sacrifice?
    Everything!"

This show feels so real, mature, and immersive. I never felt the empire being this Nazi-esque and evil as I did in Andor. How necessary but struggling and how many individual little pieces the rebels were, and also how morally grey they had to be. I wish SW in general was all like that instead of this childish presentation with joke moments shoehorned in every few minutes.

Best show on TV by far. If the acting wasn't already stand-out, this episode showcased Diego Luna, Andy Serkis and Stellan Skarsgård with Academy nomination level performances. [edit:] Also, I love Andor saying "I would rather die fighting them than giving them what they want" basically defines his own ending. That is a critical turning point for the character. It was a great success to involve Diego, not only as an actor, but in the development of the entire concept and story as an executive producer. Anyone who knows Luna's work knows that they will always find something authentic and profound. He agreed to return to the character after Rogue One because he wanted to tell Andor's story as it should be, a grown-up story of a rebel movement navigating between light and dark.

The escapees probably swim with varying proficiency and, depending on the distance, could have reached shore at varying times over hours. I’m also assuming that they swam off in different directions so wouldn’t have all landed at the same beach.
As well, props to Kino who stepped up to lead the prison break knowing all the time that he couldn’t swim.
Also, kudos to the writers for providing monologues worthy of Serkis’ and Skarsgard’s expert delivery. We get the action-filled episode of the 3-episode arc and the most emotional takeaways from the ep are those two monologues. Hoping not only that the Emmys considers the show overall for a nomination, but throws so deserved loved for the the actors behind Kino, Luthen, Deedra, and even Forrest, and as well the story writers (and the score!).

What a fantastic episode. It's interesting for me to see the parallels between Kino and Luthen.
    ***SPOILER WARNING***
Luthen made a metaphorical leap 15 years prior when he decided he wanted to fight back against the oppressive clutches of the Empire. Kino decided (after realizing that Cassian was right) that now was the time to fight back. Luthen followed through and made the leap of faith to go forward and set his plan in motion; Kino needs to decide if he can dive and take a chance to swim and be free, or to die on that tower. It's too bad that we don't see what happens to him.
Damn. What great writing, acting, staging, and storytelling. Bravo.

Andorr is really released in a more pivotal time.
I don't know how you western people have been (heard it's also bad in Canada/Australia)
But here in Asia, the government keeps getting away with obvious abuses of power
      Ie
      Deporting people for criticism
Arresting a teacher over an obvious joke of assisination, for sedition
We can be arrested for calling the president crazy
And yet after all that, people voted the president's ally. A son of a dictator who glorified his father's bloddy era.
He claimed to be golden age when it was clearly the peak of the golden age. Investors pulled out of the country and caused a 50% inflation, yet they blamed poverty/suffering on the democratic president.
People forgot their history/what heroes died for. It was all for nought.
Andorr is here to remind the more neutral/gullible of us what freedom meant. And what oppression means "They're slowly choking us that we don't even notice, We want them to over react"
Status quo will remain status quo if it's not a crisis. The dictator was only exiled when it started to hurt financially.
They didn't care 3,000 people were murdered in a span of 20 years, but they will care if 3,000 people die in a single day
And people of Iran/China are protesting
      Russian people are leaving.
Because finally, it hurts them financially/life-savings or their own lives is at stake.
And most of all. In the age of information, people are reminded what freedom looks like.
What Iran was before the regime. To not be arrested for calling the president crazy and even borderline calling to harm the president (but obviously a joke. Ie WKUK, kill the president PSA skit during the peak of the War on terror. No arrests were made on Trevor Moore, the comedian on that skit)
      ONE WAY OUT
      ONE WAY OUT
      ONE WAY OUT

It's not about Kino and Luthen. It's about the line that connects Luthen to Cassian to the rebels on Aldhani to Kino. It's about the passing of the flame. In his monologue about what he sacrificed, Luthen says he burns himself for a sunrise he will never see, that his ego will never have a mirror or audience, that he is condemned to use the weapons of his enemy against them. Luthen discovered, scouted, and recruited Cassian. In ways, Cassian and the rebels on Aldhani are his successors and have inherited his will. They are the mirror that Luthen thought he would never have. In Cassian's conversations with the Aldhani rebels, you could see them fan the embers of rebellion that Luthen saw in Cassian. When Cassian confronted Kino and told him that he would rather die than give the empire what they want, it was a reflection of Luthen's question to Cassian in their first meeting -- "don't you want to fight these bastards for real?" Cassian was bridging that flame from Luthen and the Aldhani rebels to Kino. When Kino repeats Cassian's words in the broadcast to ignite the rally to escape, Luthen's cause found an audience amongst those trying to desperately escape the Empire's oppression. And, whether it was the rebels on Aldhani or the prisoners, they were literally using Empire weapons against them akin to Luthen's curse.

20:31 You don't think Kino Loy got pushed into the water like Cassian? Everyone was pushing their way to the exit--5,000 prisoners are headed to the spot--I don't see how Kino is going to be able to hold his ground for much longer with everyone wanting out.
Kino's last words to the prisoners was to help each other, and we see them doing that as they made their way from either their sleeping quarters or workstations to the exit--they're brothers. Why stop helping each other now? They were able to escape because some of their brothers were willing to die to give them that chance. I can't see anyone leaving Kino behind. The nighttime manager, I forget his name, will eventually make his way to Kino and if Kino hasn't been helped by then, maybe he's the one that helps him. I don't know when, but I think the chances of us seeing Kino again are pretty high.

Luthen's monologue with Lonnie leading into Andor's twilight escape with the strains of the Funeral March had me DEEP in the feels as I realized that we, knowing Andor's ultimate fate, are witnessing Luthen's true protege. That Luthen will sacrifice him and everybody, and that Andor WILL willingly sacrifice everything : that he's the man on the ground who will get everyone to fight for a doomed - yet essential - cause.
...and as I write this, I realize that Mon Mothma is his other protege....up till now she's been playing at Rebellion.....and she's now seeing that she has to get DIRTY : allying herself with a man she despises, "selling" off her daughter, using her husband as bait....her CAREER she could sacrifice EASILY, as it was her duty to the people that she says matters........but NOW she's realizing that she's going to have to take on Luthen's methods - which she railed against earlier in the show - if she wants to make meaningful moves. NONE of her Sacred Cows will survive.
    BRILLIANT show.

I loved the episode, the best one so far, Andor has changed a lot, and he no longer hesitates to shoot an enemy on the ground, a huge change from the first episode, although he still doesn't kill in cold blood except if absolutely necessary. The prison escape is also the first operation that Andor creates and directs instead of being a member of the group.
In addition, the empire creates an army of enemies in that prison, gives them order, structure, uniforms, teaches them to march and obey and act as a unit instead of individuals, leaders, hierarchy, discipline and most important of all, a reason to the rebellion The moment someone sees through the lie the entire imperial system falls apart.
The more they oppress the more and more enemies they create, until they cannot subdue them all, it is a vicious circle that the Empire itself creates and from which it is unable to escape.
It is also the episode of the great speeches, where both Kino and Luthen shine in their scenes. Both excellent characters. Excellent characters both and they can both go very far, but they will never reach the end of the path, they can only help others to make that path.

    This episode was beyond incredible!!
When Kino said he can’t swim I was gutted & tears flowed down my face
Hopefully some of his friends held hands with him & jumped together simultaneously; one on each side holding one of his hands
Once they land inside the ocean they can all start kicking their legs & with their outer hands start swimming, then with their hand holding one of Kino’s hands they just start moving it so he sees how it’s done & they instruct him to start kicking his legs repeatedly like them…if only 😅🙏🏽
Or more basic; since it was about 5,000 of them running to jump maybe a bunch will push him over like Cassian was & once Kino’s in the water, hopefully someone near him sees him beginning to drown & helps him 🙏🏽

I think the Shift Leader, Serkis’ character, was so all-in immediately because he’d been telling himself that he was doing all this stuff to get people through and keep them alive. Figuring out it was all a lie, that he was just a tool for working his men to death, was a lot for him.

Fantastic episode, actors, script, show. After the slow burn tension building true stakes, true payoff.
I love love love showing the Rebels are grey too, using families as hostage, sacrificing a cell for the cause, etc.
It's not an accident Luthen is dressed like Darth Vader, without a helmet. :)
((While I understand the reasoning, similar to ISB trick using the pilot body they could have made a complex plan to fake why the attack is postponed and won't happen.))
I hope there will be even more informants, infiltrators, double agents, etc. on both sides.
I had the unlikely theory for Mon's daughter, as they will start investigating Mon Mothma more her hands will be tied.
The next question even if she takes the offer how to explain to the father? He will definately show a different face to her daughter enforcing Chandrilan tradition,
however what is the excuse Mon will tell to her husband? Just let them meet then say how fruitful it would be to make such marriage? Her husband will see through such lie in a second.
Or at the heat of ongoing investigation she confesses everything to her husband and why they need to do this or their family will be arrested, jailed, their wealth seized?
(Funny thought: the young boy could marry Val, kekw.)
How will Andor escape from that planet? It's like the Great Escape (movie about WW2 POW escape), 99.9% will be caught and shot or brought back soon. Blockade and raids all over the planet.
It's like a bank robbery, or hitting any target. You might get lucky, but the response will be horrifying. Fleet coming out from hyperspace (literally 1 single Star Destroyer), fighters and probe droids swarming the planet, Stromtrooper regiment deployed sweeping all, etc. etc.
Also I wonder how much they underestimate Maarva, or we underestime Meero. Is it only one spy watching over her, or it's way more complex, they might have even hacked her droid.
Since they might not know how determined Maarva is, but they know she is the only bait/lead for Andor, and Andor for Axis.
I suspect rebel activity on Ferrix, they try to rescue Bix, Maarva already checked some corridors and alternate entrances to the HQ, former Hotel. It would make sense if she would sacrifice herself
    if it's called for.
It would make sense to finish this season with Andor becoming a true rebel, not looking for personal need, gain or forced but ready to doing things for the cause.
Also if we are to see Andor's sister showing up, it's time. Maybe she is already with a rebel cell, and try helping on Narkina 5 when the word of a prison outbreak gets in their ears.
Can't wait for the next one.
Don't forget if you love this serie, the tone, the level of acting, script, etc. then head to imdb and rotten tomatoes and leave your score for it. Feedback is our strongest weapon.

It is, I almost drowned as a teen, didn't know how to swim, and fight-or-flight can be rather cumbersome in these situations because panic isn't good at keeping you afloat, instead I almost brought my dad down with me, who was trying to help me up
I'd say Andy's character is a goner, which I think it's okay, a tragic and bittersweet goodbye, but it's not like Andor would bump into him again and go "Hey old buddy, it's a small galaxy!"

  • @andrewholcombe4565
    @andrewholcombe4565 2 роки тому +10

The fact that Kino couldn't swim at first felt like a throw away excuse to get rid of a character. But then I thought about it. I thought about Kino's reluctance up til this point and all of a sudden stuff seemed to make a lot more sense. Because Kino can't swim, the ONLY way he is getting out of that prison is if the Empire allows it. The prison doesn't have ships or fighters of its own. It doesn't need them. When Kino chose to follow Andor, he did so knowing full well that this would result in him drowning or getting killed by the Empire. His chant "One Way Out!" championed a means of escape he knew he couldn't use. That's one of the biggest reasons why he's been such a strict company man this entire time, and its why he felt so conflicted even when he was confronted with clear evidence that the Empire had no intention of releasing any of them.
Also no, just because you can move your limbs doesn't mean you can swim. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in the world with 237,242 people dying by drowning in 2019. According to a recent Gallup poll only 44% of the world answered yes to the question "Are you able to swim without any assistance at all?" Only 27% of respondents from low-income economies answered yes to the same question. Considering Kino is a no-name convict, it is very possible he like Andor comes from relatively low socio-economic status as well. One of the reasons the Empire likely chose to have the prison located far from shore is because of how big an obstacle the water is to mass prison breaks. Many of the most secure prisons on earth such as Alcatraz are located on small islands off the coast of the main land for this very reason.
Here's hoping Kino and any other prisoners who can't swim team up and trick the Empire into bringing ships to hi-jack them. Unfortunatley what is more likely is the major prison break draws the attention of the ISB, the guards Andor doesn't kill are able to identify Andor by his face, and Kino will be tortured for information then executed for his role in the escape. Unfortunately, he doesn't really know anything relevant about Andor that the guards don't know so he couldn't turn traitor even if he wanted to.

No rebellion against a giant like the Empire would have a shot in hell at succeeding if they played fair and clean. This show and partly 'Rogue One' is the telling of that. In the OT we saw the Rebellion after all the dirty work had been done to create it and get it running smoothly. All the betrayals, all the murder, all the assassinations, all the innocents allowed to die, all the allies sold out, all the comrades left out in the cold, all the intelligence sources sacrificed. There are war time leaders and peace time leaders, the war time rebels like Luthen and Saw Gerrera all either die fighting for the cause or get outcasted by the more centralist rebels (like Mon) who can't stomach their methods anymore. Methods that helped build the rebellion if not start it (like we see Luthen doing as the founding father of the rebellion movement).

You have to wonder when Kino (the Andy Serkis character) states early on that he considers himself dead already if he is thinking about the only exit available... that the only way out is to jump into the ocean and swim miles to shore, knowing he can't swim. He LITERALLY knows he is dead already. He knows he will drown, or stay behind and be killed by the Empire.
