Yes... when I saw that monologue... well before I did I would have rated this episode 11/10 after I saw that at the end...it ratcheted up to 13/10. This episode of Andor is probaby the greatest thing I have seen on TV. Better than Breaking Bad... Better than Sopranos.. Best StarWars content ever. Some of the BEST content ever created. So amazing.

During the monolog at the end, I love the visual of the mole being trapped in the claustrophobic elevator car, while it's being explained to him that he's trapped in actuality. Luthen telling him you'll stay with me, then closing the door, fully trapping him... *chefs kiss*

The visual storytelling in Andor is on a whole new level. They really compose their important shots to perfection.. not to mention the backdrops, the architecture, costumes and color matching. A lot of excellent work was put into the composition of it all and it really shows.

A little detail regarding Kino - he tells his cell block that in his mind he’s already dead. Why? He knows they’re surrounded by water and that he can’t swim. Everything he does in episode 10 he is doing for his fellow prisoners, to give them a chance at survival that he already knows he won’t share in.
It’s a beautiful, subtle parallel to Luthen’s speech - both men are sacrificing their lives for others, though in very different ways.

That Genevieve O'Reilly's scene... The entire time she was able to emote a sense of annoyance and disgust. Then at the very end she turned all of that off and gave a flustered/rushed denial.

The absolutely titanic impact of the events of episode 10 is one of the most powerful culmination of events I've ever witnessed, in any television show. One. Way. Out.
This show does such an amazing job of fleshing out the nitty gritty of revolution: as stated in the show, everyone has their own rebellion. Prisoners from all walks, coming together against unbearable oppression, drawing a line and then pushing back in spectacular fashion. So good. Thank you so much for coming back to these.

    "And what do you sacrifice?"
    "Calm.
    Kindness, kinship.
    Love.
I've given up all chance at inner peace.
I've made my mind a sunless place.
I share my dreams with ghosts.
I wake up every day to an equation I wrote 15 years ago from which there's only one conclusion; I'm damned for what I do.
My anger, my ego, my unwillingness to yield, my...my eagerness to fight, they've set me on a path from which there is no escape.
I yearned to be a savior against injustice without contemplating the cost and by the time I looked down, there was no longer any ground beneath my feet.
What is my...what is my sacrifice?
I'm condemned to use the tools of my enemy, to defeat them.
I burn my decency for someone else's future.
I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I'll never see.
And the ego that started this fight will never have a mirror or an audience or the light of gratitude.
    So what do I sacrifice?
    Everything!"

Luthen is the greatest character ever created by Star Wars. This show was the best show of 2022. I really hope the Emmy's aren't snobs regarding genre TV, because Luthen and Dedra deserve Emmy nominations. The interrogation scene and Luthen's monologue are the most rewatchable scenes that legitimately give me chills each time I watch them. Cyril and Dedra are also so perfectly creepy together. I love every creep-tastic moment.

Awards are nice and all that, but what I really wish is for Andor to gather bigger audience and for this approach to SW to get continued past Cassian's story. I want more show like this - thrillers with well thought out plots, properly well written dialogues and actors who can deliver them perfectly... slowly building complex story arcs with care and attention to detail, respecting the audience enough to allow it to keep up without too much hand holding or exposition. It reminds me of the Expanse and I love that show !

Yeees, the episodes of great monologues! And lines in general. Every scene with Serkis (or “Kino”, but c’mon, it’s Andy Serkis) is gold of course, but Andor’s “power doesn’t panic” is perfect. And Dedra’s tiny cheek twitch… somehow they gave a villain a heel-turn.
And of course, Stellan’s speech. By his own admission, he’s an irredeemable monster. And he is. But by the standards he puts on poor Lonni, he’s, by virtue of sacrifice, a hero. And he is. I’ve said it before, but the Tatooine farm boy who’s whisked off by a wizard to save a princess seems like a bad parody next to this show.

What I adore about Andor (it almost rhymes!) is that this is a show where you can have a long scene of two characters talking and you are on the edge of your seat.
It ALSO has high adventure, but... man.
The speeches and comments in these episodes are what I was talking about an episode or two ago about how great the dialog is.

The high point of the series for me were the two speeches in Episode 10. Both were just amazing, and it was somewhat unexpected and revealing that Luthen has a poetic side to him. It's something that would never have occurred to me without that speech. For Episode 9, Karn stalking Meero really weirded me out, mostly because I can't help thinking that he's doing it because she reminds him of his mother. I'm convinced that he's going to end up admitting that to her at some point; the only question is when.

It wasn't just one actor/actress that delivered the goods either, it came from several different actors/actresses. The cast of this show just delivers amazing performances all the way around in every episode, and episode 10 is like the shining pinnacle.
I think Luthen's monologue is probably my favorite scene overall, because I could just feel the pain of his words stabbing my soul; but there is no way I could pick a favorite job of acting for this one. I would have to call it about a three or four way tie (or maybe five or six way tie) for best acted scene.

I think one small detail that explains Kino's harsh exterior is that the rooms are playing against each other. His room consistently places at the top, meaning they are probably kept more out of harms reach. I think he drives them a little hard because it is ultimately the best thing that he can do for their sanity -- keeping them from being electrocuted constantly.

Luthen is such a gripping, fascinating character. It's no wonder so many people think he's secretly a Jedi or Sith - he just carries so much weight and guilt and layered deception and regret, he feels like he has to be something magic because as a character he "weighs" so much...

  • @DoremiFasolatido1979

They also did, in fact, have to take Ulaf's body through the work area. There's only one passage. The cell block has no exits other than that bridge, not even service tunnels or emergency exits. And the only path from that bridge to the central tower is through the work room. Again, no service crawlspaces and no emergency exits. You go up that lift, or you don't leave. The end.
The main proof that "nobody's listening" in the prison, is actually the fact that the guy who killed himself wasn't collected until shift change. All the prisoners were complaining that he couldn't have waited until shift change. That means that the guards didn't even know he'd done it until someone reported it. Which means they're not monitoring the cell blocks. Probably because they don't have the manpower to do that much surveillance.
Imperial Star Destroyers take a LOT of people to run...tens of thousands, each (mostly because they're shit designs, but also because they're goddamned huge ships...comically, uselessly huge). And the Empire has a lot of them. And then there are things like the Death Star, and Super Star Destroyers (which we see one of...but there are several), which carry crews dozens of times that of a single Star Destroyer. The Empire is putting most of its personnel into its fleet, which leaves most other facilities critically undermanned. And we see that all over this show. The garrison on Aldhani being only a handful of people, the prison on Narkina 5 being only a few dozen guards for thousands of prisoners, the use of the security droids on Niamos because there aren't enough troopers...
The Empire wants to control everyone's lives down to the minutiae of daily life, but they don't have the resources to control millions of worlds with billions of people each. It just can't be done. And that's just the star systems they actually use. There are tens of billions of star systems that they don't even touch, either because they're not useful in some way, or because they literally just can't control that many systems at all. And that's even with an entire third of the galaxy being uncontrolled because it's all the "Unknown Regions" and similar places. Locations that are unexplored because there aren't established hyperspace routes which is because hyperspace does wonky shit there.
Galaxies are obscenely huge. And while the Empire covers a lot of it, it's all sprawl. There's no real control there. So they use fear of the Imperial Starfleet to keep everyone essentially self-controlled through fear of retribution. Like a bad parent, "Stop crying or I'll GIVE you something to cry about!" When the whole reason they're crying in the first place is usually because of that selfsame fear.

Everyone had the best acting moment in this. You can't really single anyone out in particular, because the performances in this show are just so far and above anything else. How do you even compare?

That "One way out" speech is one of my favorite Star Wars moments ever. I was in tears the first time watching it. That entire thing just mirrors America's prison system.

I’ve watched a lot of reactions to this fantastic show over the past few months and I think yours might be one of my favorites. I appreciate that you’re discussing it beforehand for context, reacting honestly, but also allowing the playback to speak for itself instead of just a constant stream of talking over it. It feels like you’re enjoying it and paying attention to the great dialogue and writing. Thank you. Subscribing. Really looking forward to your reaction to the final two episodes of the season

Luthen is a master of compartmentalizing information. Any single rebel being captured couldn't give away everything he's up to.

LOVE. THE HAIR! ANDOR has proven to be the best Star Wars Franchise of any medium and second-place is not very close .. .. Andor is the show we thought Obi-Wan was gonna be but it's fine, we'll take our Andor!!
Denise Gough is one of the most-decorated actresses in Irish entertainment history .. .. Since making Andor, she's kinda given in to the Church of Star Wars and has become a bit of a SW Fanatic .. .. Another successful convert!! 😀😀😀

This show is as close to perfect as I could hope for. I think we all went into it expecting typical Star Wars, which is why it does take a minute to really get into it, but this is what Star Wars can be. And I'm not saying everything has to be in the Andor model, but rather the quality every Star Wars property should be striving for.
I love a nostalgic moment, but if we want the stories to progress we need to let them progress and sometimes that means letting go. Easter eggs are always welcome, but getting stuck in the past has hindered a lot of these projects that really could have been this level quality.
I also love the structure of these storyline arcs. It allows us time with these characters that we don't normally get and that makes us care more.
I'm so excited for season 2 and to see you continue the end of this fantastic season!

Watching it all click for you has been worth the wait; Nearly as satisfying as it was painful to watch you try to force yourself to like the show earlier. I will be very curious after the season is ended to hear your thoughts on how to get someone to be patient enough with Andor to enjoy it's full flower, because, what a bloom!

If you think about it, there aren't many worlds with large bodies of water in the Star Wars universe. And there aren't many people in the galaxy that could afford the luxury of a pool. Not to mention the fact that there are different predators in the planets where water is plentiful, so Kino not knowing how to swim is expected. He may have been picked up from a world like Tatooine.

Luthen wanting Cassian dead makes a ton of sense.
He is a very meticulous guy, and he doesn't do messy. Cassian being a mercernary and not a true believer (at least that is what his recent actions are telling Luthen), he wants that loop closed.

It's always fun for me to see people make it past the first 3-5 episodes of Andor and suddenly realize "OMG, this is Fantastic!"
Btw- almost everyone has the same reaction to "New Guy" 😅. First, they all call him "New Guy." Second, they all are like "Nice! Way to go New Guy." And then, of course, they all kind of shrug and say, "Oh. Ok. Bye New Guy." 🙃

You should see the interview of the female cast of Andor by SAG-AFTRA Foundation. All 4 women have been fantastic in this show. Denise Gough ("Goff") is especially interesting as she is such a bright personality, the exact opposite of Dedra. I didn't really realize until this interview that 3 of these women are Irish. The interviews with the men are very interesting, too. I agree with you that all of the acting in this show is stunning.

48:04 They can't do anything! The backup generators don't provide enough power for the floors, they just keep the lights and essential functions on! The moment those hydro generators were turned off they won!
Also those hydro generators ARE the whirlpools.

The boots are useless. There are 5,000 prisoners, and only a few dozen guards. If they were to take the boots, but then the floor got sparked in the rest of the facility, their escape would be finished, then and there, because only a few dozen prisoners would survive, easy pickings for the guards at that point. Stopping to put them on would do no good at all, and would cost time. Cassian made the right call to go straight for the control center as quickly as possible to take the best chance of preventing the floors from being used at all. Engaging that many floors takes a lot of power, and that bought them the time they needed to get to the top level. Cass made the smart move.
