    Ben, love your videos. I have been videoing wildlife and nature for years. However, I started with DSLR's and switched to camcorders. I now shoot with the Canon XF705 which allows me to shot 120 at 1080. When you are not shooting in slow motion what is your preferred shutter speed and frame rate. And yes, I know your live in PAL land. I really enjoy your enthusiasm. I'm 72 and still have the same thrill as I did when I was filming with Super 8mm film back in the 1970's, only now it is a hell of a lot cheaper. Stay safe, Bob

    • @BenTutton
      @BenTutton  3 роки тому +3

      Hi Bob, glad you like the videos!
      Mostly when we film wildlife “on speed” we use 30fps and 1/60th but then convert that to 25fps to give a little extra magic. It’s barely noticeable, but does add something. So for NTSC I’d probably got to about 36-40fps for a similar effect.
      There’s something very exciting about being out with wild animals, although im glad I’m not working with film. I don’t think my bank balance would be able to cope!

    10:45 where do you mount the Cine 30 HD + the tripod legs on the fstop shinn? is it on the side, or do you just carry it on your shoulder? are the straps on the Shinn strong enough to hold such a heavy tripod?
    When using the Cine 30 HD with those tripod legs, up to what focal length of the 50-1000mm are you able to shoot without any wobble/vibrations?
    Do you think the Sachtler video 18 S2 is good enough to avoid wobble/vibrations when using a Sony 200=600mm lens + Sony fs5m2?

    • @BenTutton
      @BenTutton  3 роки тому

      I just rest the tripod on top of the bag normally. You could definitely strap it to the side of the bag though. The f-stop would take it.
      The Cine30 is ok up all the way up to 1000 but you just have to be careful. Especially if it’s windy.The video 18 will be fine for the 200-600 I think.

    Exactly the type of video I was looking for, already new about the Canon 50 1000 but was wondering about the cinema camera type as well even though it matters much less for picture quality since I am guessing something like the FX6 would come close but no 8k future proofing but overall curious about what pros do to get such crisp footage of wildlife. Suscribed

    • @BenTutton
      @BenTutton  3 роки тому

      Pretty much any camera 4K and above will give really nice, crisp footage. (The CN20 comes in PL and EF mounts, so most cameras can be adapted to take one - Ive used an a7s2 on the back of this lens!
      The only real reason to film in 8k is because the shelf life of the footage in a library will be longer. And also Japan broadcast in 8k, so if they are a co producer they’ll probably want delivery in 8k.

    *Nice piece of Kit mate ! 👍👀. I'm wondering what the maximum resolving power of the Canon 20x50 Cine-Servo actually is ? I'm seeing and hearing 4K, but that's far from enough if you're slapping it on an 8K resolution capable camera, and what about using it with the URSA Mini Pro 12K ? Does this lens have enough natural resolving power for 12K image acquisition ? Most wildlife Cinematographers are shooting with this lens on an Arri Alexa Mini, which is a 4K camera, so it should great, and it does look great, but what happens if you put it on the higher image resolving sensors ?*

    • @BenTutton

    • @BenTutton
      @BenTutton  2 роки тому +1

      Primes are used, but rarely. They’re much trickier to use than the zoom lenses. The ability to zoom out makes finding an animal so much easier and faster, therefore you’re not missing action as much.
      The other thing is that really you’re not struggling with subject isolation on the 50-1000 even at ~f11. The length of the lens really helps in that regard, especially if animals are close!
      The long lens primes I’ve used are usually for filming at night. Generally the 400mm f2.8 on the canon ME20

    • @BenTutton
      @BenTutton  2 роки тому

      The lens is powered through the PL mount on the RED. You also get lens focal length and focus depth info in the EVF which is nice.
      You can power the lens off a Dtap for cameras without a powered mount - I’ve used this solution on the Phantom Flex which works well, although you obviously don’t get the lens info.

      @BenTutton  10 місяців тому

      I'm planning on making a video all about the money side of things. You can earn a reasonable amount, but it's definitely not a job you do if you want to get rich!
      In terms of starting, there's many ways in. (everyon'e s journey into the business is different) I think if you have access to interesting animals and stories, the technology to film them well is fairly easy to get your hands on. Make a film, then go and promote yourself to producers, and share everything online. I think most producers would rather have someone who has practical field experience rather than a lot of theoretical knowledge.

    Talking bout closeups vs wide shots, do you usually use just one camera to do it all? Or would you have one to capture a fixed close-up of say a nest and other camera to follow the target and do general wide angles simultaneously? And yes that's a beast of a rig :)

    • @BenTutton
      @BenTutton  4 роки тому +1

      Depends what you’re trying to film, how much time you’ve got and how likely the action will happen more than once.
      I’ve been on shoots with 2x camera operators. One for the wide, and one for the close up shot so you can cover the action. This is especially useful if it’s “once in a lifetime” behaviour.
      You can’t really film both at once on one tripod because the framing on the wide won’t be good, and also you won’t have anyone ato focus the 2nd camera so need 2x operators
      Sometimes we’ll rig a second camera as a nest cam (I’ve done it with beavers
      before too)
      Generally though it’s just one camera and lens and you use it to film both the tight shots and the wides as the action happens. The ability to zoom makes this process much faster.

Whats your thoughts on owning. Will this bring on more hires?

    • @BenTutton
      @BenTutton  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Steven, cheers for the comment.
      I don’t own this kit, it’s owned by production, and can’t really imagine making the investment in such an expensive kit unless I had a large enough project I knew would pay for the loan.
      Most UK wildlife production companies now own at least a few of these kits, and so even if you have your own it’s hard to rent the kit to the production, as it’s cheaper for them to take their kit!
      I think really the only thing worth owning is specialist kit (I.e. underwater) and peripherals to make your life easier!
      I’d you’re still trying to break in, then I’d say carry on with the kit you’ve got to hand. If you can film well on that, then it’ll be easy(ish!) on a kit like this!
      Hope that helps!
