  • When you don't roll at all waiting for your subject to appear - this is often quite the case in producing wildlife films. I can't even begin to count the number of hours, heck even weeks of time I've sat and waited for a particular species or shot to appear that I need for my shot list and never rolled the camera simply because it never materialized. Now there's always things you can film, such as cutaways of the scene you're in, but sometimes it's simply a waiting game. I wanted to bring you along for some of the real true moments of wildlife filmmaking - when you don't roll because your subject never shows. It's only right to show all the failures of trying to get the shot also, as that is quite often the case in wildlife filmmaking.

      Thanks! I figured it would be good to show it's not always peachy whenever I'm out trying to film wildlife! lol

      It's insane honestly. The flexibility of it is incredible, but certainly a beast to carry around lol

    Not a success but still inspiring for the interest learners like me. It's important to share how many hundreds of failures are needed to get a decent shot of the subject.
    Thanks for sharing.

      Thank you, it's hard to sometimes show the failures, but, that is like the majority of wildlife filmmaking! So I thought it would be good to show a bit more of what it's truly like and hopefully it will inspire others also! Thank you for the comment and keep it up! :)

    I'd love to watch a more detailed video about the CN20 - it seems to be the ultimate wildlife lens. But it has no image stabilisation. Do you struggle to get steady shots with it when zoomed in?

    • @FilmingTheWild
      @FilmingTheWild  2 роки тому +1

      I will definitely put that idea in the que next time I get to use it. I have access to one just don't own it. It's a beast of a lens! It's certainly incredible to work with. When paired with the O'Connor tripod, it's extremely smooth. It takes a little adjusting to get smoother as an operator, but, it tracks incredibly smooth once you get the hang of it and the breathing technique, most shots are steady and useable, although a little wind can make it a little harder to obtain. I honestly don't notice the lack of IS that much, I mean you can certainly tell, but it's pretty solid when you get the hang of it.

      @@FilmingTheWild Thanks for the response. I have never used the 50-1000 and I might get to use it on a job this year (if it comes through). It will be mostly filming out of vehicles. I have a solid vehicle mount on my car, but I think my little Sachtler DV 6 head will not work and I must make a plan to rent something heavier.

      That's awesome! I hope the job comes through. You'll love that lens. I would definitely recommend something like the Oconnor head if possible, but I've seen people with other setups too. That O'Connor compared with my sachtler FSB 8 is night and day different.

    I think my first car weighed less than that setup.

      Haha! It definitely weighs a lot!! haha It can capture amazing footage, but it's a beast to carry!

    Hi man! Love your videos and I find that most people mention their camera and lens and often don't mention about the tripods... Now I'm in search for a tripod but I certainly can't afford an O'Connor or sachtler... I'm getting a blackmagic 6K pro camera and I own Tamron 150-600mm G2 lens... Can you recommend me some decent tripod for this relatively light weight wildlife filming setup?

    • @FilmingTheWild
      @FilmingTheWild  2 роки тому +1

      Hey thanks for the comment! And yes! I know a lot of people who use fluid head systems from Manfrotto who love them, and they are affordable. I would probably start there, and look away the weight ratings for the type of fluid head your interested in. I would look for one that has adjustable pressures so you can dial in the resistance you want when panning or tilting which makes tracking a subject easier and more smooth.

      It is definitely a beast of a setup for sure! I wish I owned it!! I just have access to it for this particular production on burrowing owls that I'm directing/producing.
