Float Rig vs Bottom Rig! Trout Fishing with Power Eggs & Gulp Worms
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- Today I'm out trout fishing with a float and a bottom rig to see which works better with power eggs & gulp worms. Since I found a somewhat dependable trout fishing spot, its time to experiment a little with different rigs and baits. I start off with the float rig and a gulp worm and don't get any bites. Then I switch to the power eggs and still don't get a bite. After removing the float, I catch a trout on the first cast! I am also able to catch one on the worm! I think I will stick to the bottom rig for now.

The Gulp Worm pack not opening right is how I knew this really was “Realistic Fishing” lol #TightLinesFolks
😂
I wonder how many times I have told myself “just one more”
All to relatable.....
That "one more cast" turns to one more hour. Lol
Bobble floats are pretty good fill them with some water you can attach a fly fishing lure or what ever ya fancy
Hahaah right ..happens everytime
Everytime
Thank you for bringing us along.
Thank you for being informative.
Thank you for acting like a grown up
Keep it realistic
Not enough running around screaming and trying to sell you mystery tackle boxes? 😉
@@RealisticFishing Well I do not mind the sells pitch, anyone needs to make a living.
i have enough jerk running around at work that I do not need more in my life ... as for the screaming ... well summer will be here before you know it and the trash beer drinker catfish fishermen with it ... then you will be allowed to scream and bitch too
Float rigs for trout work great when done right. First you want to use a light weight plastic float with a clear bottom, then you have to use much smaller splitshots 2 or 3 along the length of your leader then adjust your line so that you are just bouncing off the bottom. It must all look as real as possible and you will do great. Took some time but it is now one of my favorite trout techniques. Pink worms work great. Also do not bunch up your splitshots. Spread them along your leader. I have great luck with the BB size wingless green weights. A natural float is key.
None of that is the problem with my rig. The bait can't bounce off the bottom when the water goes from 1 ft deep, to 3 ft, back to 2 ft and then 6 inches... Thanks anyway.
4:00 a.m., a good cup of coffee and a new video from Realistic Fishing,,,,, sounds like a good way to start my day. Thumbs up!

I usually keep a few ziplock baggies on me in case I screw up the seal on bait bags so the smell and slime doesn't spread everywhere.
👍
I learned that the hard way fishing for channel catfish. Broke the seal and man, that chicken liver bait smells like shit
@@plgwlk This channel has a great video where he gets two types of dip baits and smells them both; one being blood flavor and the other being cheese flavored, his reaction to it is golden. I think it’s the video where he gets the 13 Fishing black and neon green spinning combo for $35.00
Catching them left and right after taking the float off. Great looking trout, and awesome video alex!
I was just trout fishing yesterday at a ‘local’ lake (about an hour drive for me.) It was me and two elder gentleman. Both had really good knowledge of the waters. We spent 6 hours sharing baits and techniques and all the little changes we made in our fishing to all key in on the fish.
I came out with my daily limit of 3 as well as one of the others. The other guy took home 2. I also broke my PB for a chain pickerel, on a yellow rooster tail. Wind pick up, so I started nailing my lures out with the wind. Sped up the retrieval and gave it a few pauses along the way and beached a 29 inch pickerel.
Besides that. It was a multi species day of trout, largemouth, pickerel, yellow perch, and bluegill. Really wanted a crappie to take home though. Still, hands down the best day of fishing in awhile for an all around fun day.
Yup sounds like a dream brother 🎣👍
Hey do u have any tips for getting more views I usually range from 100-120 but on my last video it only has 50 views I'm worried something is wrong I put like 3 hours of editing into my last video and I'm just wondering if u wanna check out the video and tell me what u think or something u can do to help or tell me that would probably help me just looking for advice
I think you are using words in your title like INSANE, Multi species, and SLAM to get views, but terms like that are actually hurting your views. Think of all of the bigger channels that use words like that... can you really compete with them in rank with 1.1k? If you stop copying the buzz words used by big channels, you might gain traction on the words that actually describe your video.
@@RealisticFishing ok that's actually helpful thank so much I really appreciate it
i was taught to use two smaller split shot weights to equal the weight you want and spread them about 2-3 inches apart. This will cut down on your snags with the bottom rig. Keep it realistic man!
👍👍
I fish for trout the same way. By bouncing it on the bottom. What I find happens more for me is the split shot gets snagged more than the hook. Like the video, man!
New subscriber here, I appreciate you showing the adaptability needed to succeed, switching things up and trying multiple spots. Also showing how many times you cast, most shows JUST show the hook ups, none of the times they miss. Great stuff bro! Keep up the good work!
That's covered with covid covers and the dynamite which got wet and didn't explode 😭😂
Maybe, when you were using the bobber, the bait was not in the right depth of the water column ,as opposed to when you were bouncing at the bottom. Just my humble opinion. Tight lines bro.
My thoughts exactly
In your humble opinion... How do you set the depth for water that is 6 inches when it hits the water, then 3 ft deep a few seconds later... Then 1 ft deep, then 2 feet deep again, all in one pass?
@@RealisticFishing if that's the case, I most likely will fish in the deepest part of the run first and adjust the bobber again in the swallower parts. There has been tons of times when I skunk on a float set up, all bcos I couldn't fig out the right depth to be in. Btw, i apologize if my comments comes of as condescending or judgmental, it is merely, my most humble opinion. Tight lines, bro .
Tip on bobbers for trout the best ones to use, that dont scare them, and seem to work best for me is the clear ones you can put water in to adjust the float also 1.5-2foot leader made from 6pd line.
Also when you add water to them, they seem to float in the current better, and dift nicely i into the holes, and pools.
Thanks for the video, Alex. I just went trout fishing for the first time last year so I'm a noob. I wondered this exact thing after going (the use of a bobber vs drifting bottom). I'll be watching more of your vids to prepare. Thank you for the helpful content!
Hey Debo, I hope they can help. 👍
Heck yeah, I like trout fishing..I haven't done it in years but we used to have a ball busting our asses wading the streams...LOL
I see you're putting those boots to good use.
They work great. Good for exploring 🤘
just uploaded my first trout video, I use a feeder with a size 16 hook and 2/3 maggot, but I'm fishing still pools. I'm going to try these eggs on the river, it looks like an productive day out... hopefully scottish trout like them like your trout do 😂
p.s... cracking video tight lines from the other side of the pond 👌
A couple things to try: 1) different float depths, although I suspect where you are fishing the drift is too fast with a float. 2) For snaggy places try drop shotting using a split shot...a lot of times if the split shot gets hung up you can pull the line through the shot, only losing the shot. It can also keep the hook slightly higher than the snags. The split shot makes it easy to adjust the distance betwixt the hook and the shot. In some waters (still water ) I like to use the "critically balanced" "waggler"/British style stick floats...they indicated takes in any direction. Good video as usual! #keepitreelstick
Agreed. Even though I sometimes bounce eggs along the bottom, I typically use a float in all waters. I'm in the US, but switched to UK-style float fishing a few years ago as it better suits my approach to fishing. I enjoy fishing more since making the switch. I do have a handful of crystal insert wagglers from the UK, but I typically use a Thill TG waggler for still water and dot it down to about a quarter-inch.
For streams and rivers, I typically use a wire-stem float and continuously mend the line downstream. For these purposes, I'll use a Thill Turbo Master 6.5". I really like that float, so it's too bad that Thill no longer makes it. I suppose I'll have to hit up Ebay again for one of the UK swift water sticks if I ever need a replacement.
Don't discount the bobber rig that quick I use them for Browns and Steelhead a lot, try a real spawn bag with it fresh spawn if possible works great. I use the float as a strike indicator for the most part. I know the depths where I fish well and adjust my bait depth to just barely kiss the bottom. And that third one you got was a Tiger trout I believe(could be wrong), they're a cross of Brook and Rainbow.
Never had any luck on float in streams. When I go to ponds or lakes I do alright with em
Thats what I was thinking. They just go so damn fast in the current
Most Trout we were catching in CA. where I use to live and they stocked during the winter, when we used a Texas Rig, we did use a lot of power bait, Mostly on a small hook and make a little ball of the Power Bait just covering the complete hook then kinda tight line fishing it like for Cat fish. We had more luck using Pumpkin, yellow garlic, yellow corn, and a light green color. Some would hit on the small baits like you used in a video a couple back with the mouse tails. Also we had a lot hitting on Little MINI MARSH MELLOWS..
I might try marshmellows if I can find the little ones 👍
I love the video's you post. I have learned so much. Looking for good deals in various stores has helped me stay within my budget. Keep it up!
I am happy to hear it, keep looking for those deals 👍
Pretty clear to me on that outing the bottom rig was the way to go. 👍👍
Oh yeah!
Bobber fishing in rivers with a lot of current u kinda of need a long rod to mend ur line so u don’t create bobber drag so with ur set up it’s probably best to let it drift on the bottom to create the most natural presentation good job ur getting good at that trout fishing
California almost exclusively stocks Rainbows year round and I can't reliably catch them to save my life. You only fish for them in the winter when they're stocked and nail rainbow after rainbow after rainbow. My inability to really ever catch even rainbows coupled with just how much it costs to even fish here in the first place really kills my desire to keep bothering. I really need to take a trip farther east to a place where fishing is actually good.
The only saving grace is that Rainbows smell awful and the stink stays on your hands for hours even after washing.
Well your first mistake is being in California. Come to Wyoming or Nebraska, might change your mind on fishing.
Where about in California? I felt the same way and thought trout were impossible to catch, but this year has been way better in Southern California mountains! Check "fish planting California" in Google and you can see what weeks they are supposed to stock your local lakes.
Hey, man. Southern California guy here.. I catch 9/10 of my trout on nightcrawlers using 2 size 4 split shots, a size 6 hook, and a worm blower.
Hope this helps.
I had some of the most fun fishing for trout in Oklahoma last year. There was a guy that caught a 16lb rainbow like 30 minuets after they stocked it lol!
They stocked a 16 lb trout? Crazy!
@@RealisticFishing they stock big ones here to encourage folks. 5 pounders.
Jeez, the ones they stock here don't get bigger than 4-5 lbs. I've only caught 1lbers though :/
YakPak Outdoors that dude must have been stoked TJ
Fishing GrubbZ dude I swear he was SCREAMING 💀🤣
Like oh my God is he going to keep any trout they have no size limit keep em they all eat the same big or small
Gotta love vlogging in public! People just stare, and I just smile. LOL
They get a little weird 😅
Dude I though t the same thing about bobbers scaring the fish! I haven't caught many on a bobber buy I do want to catch one using a drift float on a river. I love seeing that bobber go down in the water though
Yeah, I mostly use a wire-stem Thill Turbo Master float dotted down with a few split shot. I'll mend the line as it travels downstream. Had pretty good luck with it so far.
I would carry a couple little ziplock baggies just in case stuff like that happens again that way you can keep the gulp liquid. They also seal better which might also help with the shelf life.
I ended up keeping it when I put it in the new other jar. 👍
And miss the joy of stinking up the tackle box ... not realistic man
Ever tried to bobber dog with the float? Its were you raise the float up and bounce the sinker across the bottom, gets your bait down deep and it's a really popular method for steelhead.
Never heard of it, I will have to google that one. 👍
Well shit. Was hoping that using a bobber would have worked. Awesome video.
I just dont think this is the right water for it.
Great vid, Alex BUT I'm worried about you. Now you keep your pliers with you, not in the car, you carry a tackle box instead of a baggie, and you are sporting those new $17 boots. But the second fish told me you are still the Alex we love. Others would have claimed the one that got away was a "giant" but not you. You are REALISTIC. Thanks. Now a question for our fishing filosopher; When going out to fish, if you knew you were going to catch a fish on your last cast, when would you stop?
When its time to leave. 😉
you are the king of berkley eggs. Maybe they will sponsor you. I never catch nothing on that stuff. This is why i got divorced with trout fishing and gave all my trout baits away.
Why does everyone think being sponsored is the end of the rainbow?
To be honest, i never thought of sponsoring and rainbows at the same time
Unicorns?
Always carry some ziplock sandwich baggies. That way if you ruin a bait package you have a replacement. They provide a waterproof bag just in case you need one. You can put natural baits in it.
They weigh nothing, take up little space and lots of uses.
oh thanks
Fu$k yeah bro 😎
😅
I wonder if you would have hooked up if you had more leader from the float so the bait was just above the bottom? Never used a float when trout fishing, but if I can figure it out to minimize snags.... heck yeah!
Do people use yellow colored eggs?
Smaller float and adjust the depth. Use a slip float.
I hope Academy is giving you some sort of sponsorship as much as you spend money there!!! Another fun vid!!
Wow I’m very glad you made this video. Whenever I fish for trout in a stream/river I always use a weighted bobber. Now I know that’s the reason I never catch anything. Thank you for these experiment vids, very useful info
When you took that bobber off you did awesome!!!! I like to use a bobber in lakes and bottom fish in rivers. Another great video!!!!
Thanks Hop! I think I should try it in a pond or somewhere with less current.
Thanks for the tip brotha, I went fishing this past weekend. I used your bottom set up using power bait and it hit good man. I also used panther martin halogen inline spinners, those were fun to use.
👍
First. Keep up the good work
Thanks for watching Hayden 👊
aww so cute how u released the fish u did "surgery" on xD it made me smile
well i work in dead ponds
What is an ideal height to put my hook from my sinker on a trout rig?
It depends on many things... how deep the water is, how fast its flowing, what bait you are using... etc. You will get a feel for it eventually. I like to start at 8-10 inches just to see what happens.
“oh, I lost my egg”😂
Carry a lighter with you, heat the edge of the bag lightly and pinch the ends while its worm, the plastic is similar to the “swisher sweets” baggies, i cut them and use them for hook pouches
How do I get it open again for another worm?
Realistic Fishing pinch and slide you finger in opposite directions
Just for your info, that small fish was a brown trout not a rainbow.
😂😂😂😂
Went to my first academy sports the other night...I thought I was in heaven
That trout with the interesting pattern was a Parr Trout or an immature trout. Not quite an adult yet .
Nice video man, they make a clear bobber that you can slide the center piece and fill with water for weight those work awesome for trout you should try those my friend
I use the clear floats like you're talking about when I river fish.
Damn this is one of the only fishing channels where the guy fishing isn’t screaming at the camera at any given moment. Nice work my guy
Thats right. Those guys suck 😂
the float couldve worked too, probably just needed to adjust the leader to make sure the bait could get down to the strike zone. most likely your leader was too short and the bait wasnt getting low enough. in current, the bait doesnt move at the same speed as the floater, so its going to drag behind the floater and cause the bait to rise closer to the surface even in shallow water instead of passing in front of feeding fish. normally fish in moving water hold up in an area to conserve energy and just snag food that passes by them. with a longer leader, it will sink further down and help you get more bites, while still avoid getting snagged at the bottom.
fishing with a floater is some of the most fun fishing to do, just gotta set it up properly
Awesome video once again. Our stocking starts in April here in Jersey. I think that one little one looked very much like a Brook trout.
It sort of did, I am not too sure about that one.
@@RealisticFishing it was a wild rainbow.. Not native like a brookie would be, most likely stocked as a fingerling.. Absolutely a rainbow though. Cool video.. Tight lines.
All of these fish will die once summer comes around. Then they will be stocked again next winter.
@@RealisticFishing darn that sucks.. Our weather is different in West Virginia.. Our stockies can survive into the next year lots of times, and several streams only ever get fingerlings and are considered "wild trout" streams... I take it the heat of the southern summer kills em?
Love fishing with cheap equipment. Keeps it realistic 👍👍👍👍 pro advantage rod a Walmart for $35 ($70ish?) this week, micro guides, seems good super lite....Check it out 🤙
Sounds like a good deal but I already have so many rods 😅
Damn you were teeing off on em! Still haven’t caught a trout. This is probably owing to having done every single thing wrong when I tried. Bottom wins! You had to be catching the most that day I imagine.
It was a great day for sure. Probably the best trout day of this year 👍
Trout are so damn finicky. One time I was fishing a trout hole and was using a cheap spinning combo, snap swivel, snell and two split shots. I had green Powerbait too. Didn’t catch shit. The guy fishing literally four feet away from me was using the same bait and catching one every two minutes.
What pound line did you have
They get scared if they line is too thick, if your rod has a thick line then get like a 4 pound line or around there and tie it with a swivel to your line 1 to 2 feet from where you put your bait.
@@SimplyyLive this was long ago when I was a kid (I’m 23 Y/O now) and I was using an Ugly Stik rod and reel combo with probably the line that already comes on the reel straight from the package but honestly I’m not sure.
Those unusual trout look like 1/2 rainbow 1/2 Brook. Strange.
the only thing that ive seen work with a float is a trout magnet
👍👍
“Just one more” awesome mister
Thats the fisherman's creed, one more!
Hi...l have a question...does salmon bite on power egg...or just trout only...?...thank you
Bonneville Cutthroat Trout @8:10
Actually.. only your first and last fish were a Rainbow. The rest were Cutthroat's.
That looked like a Brookie hybrid
Nah. You’re trippin. It’s a native rainbow trout
Its_ Lucas wild*
You wver tried a 3ft leader from the bobber or a clear bobber? Ive caught a lot of them on clear floats with a 3 to 4 ft leader in lakes usually throw clear in the creeks since i cant hve as long a liter cheap too. Maybe something to try man. I bottom rig off 1 or 2 split shots too.
I always wanted to go trout fishing. I say use what works and clearly for you the bobber did not. Keep them videos coming.
Time to keep experimenting with the bottom bouncer 👍
nice color on those rainbow's
I agree, good looking fish
very important to adjust the depth of the line under the float so the bait can be in the strike zone. also a stick type float has less resistance so the trout don't feel it on the bite.
How do you adjust for water that is 6 inches deep one second, then 3 ft deep the next? The strike zone changes in a fast flowing creek like this.
u should tell them or else what.. i hate those ppl
The camera shy people?
@@RealisticFishing i guess
Slip rig versus a stationary bobber is largely a matter of preference. You might try a sinking bait though, like salmon eggs, etc. With the bait sinking, a light tug from a fish will pull the bobber right under. Floating baits move up above your weight, so when you get a bite the bobber doesn't pull under. Science 👍Haha. I really dig the trout videos man.
I think I will stick with what works, bottom bouncing. Science 😅
Yesterday it was about 30 degrees out and wet. I was trying to catch a panfish (and I never did after hours) so I could try to live bait fish for bass. I started getting bored and sat down on the boat rentals dock and dropped my line in about a foot out in front of me off of this dock hoping for a bluegill. I quit paying attention for a moment and looked down and my bobber had went under so I pulled up hard and up comes a golden rainbow trout about 14 inches long that bit on about a 1/4 inch long piece of redworm I dug out of my yard. Now this is a small lake and there aren't a lot of golden rainbow trout left in it this time of year because they've all been caught for the most part and the stocking program has been over for awhile now. A few months ago I found a golden rainbow trout the same size looking bloated and laying on it's side and I walked up to it and picked it up out of the water. I looked at it for a moment and then held it under the water and squeezed on it's stomach and bubbles came out. I then moved it back and forth in the water holding it by it's tail because I think that does something. It swam off strong. I think my surprise catch was the trout I saved that day.
Anyways! When 2020 rolls around I'm gonna buy a trout stamp and start trout fishing now. I usually just fish for carp and I'm pretty frustrated with it right now because I haven't been able to locate them where I fish and maybe I have but they don't like my bait. I guess trout is something good to fish for when it gets cold out.
Truth is: once you’re in the correct column of water, and using the right bait and hook- you’re fishin’.
4 got secret used in Ore-gun N 80's! Was clear torpedo bobbers cast like bullet's & real sensitive also. Sadly could nev er find um N NC now!
Nice catching bro. There must be a healthy amount of fish in that area cuz that stretch of river seems pretty pressured. Always brightens my day to see you upload a new vid. Keep up the awesome job homie
They stock it a few times over the winter. 👍
This exact same float method works really well for channel cats when you're using nightcrawlers. It's great for getting past the snags. It works great for other fish too obviously. But I love using that method for channel cats in snaggy rivers.
I am not sure if there are any cats in here. Maybe in the summer when the water is a little warmer 🤔
What rod is that? I have been looking for a new one, and I love the way that looks.
8:20 That trout have bass lateral pattern....so weird......but how?????
Mix eggs? Or male bass sperm on female eggs trout????..
Help me out....thanks
Its just a coincidence.
How far are you casting with the split shot and bait. Trout fishing I’ve only caught 10 in the last 2 years I always try lures and never seem to work power bait works best for me. I don’t get to go fishing all the time.
maybe 25 ft
And you’re not supposed to touch trout on the gills it literally kills them..... 🤦🏼♂️
Those eggs really work for me as well fished exactly the way you got them bouncing the bottom. Nice Rainbow there. Looks like a great spot too. Fish on!
I've caught quite a few bobber fishing the streams of Virginia with pieces of night crawler and a few with crappie jigs they like crickets too love the video brother
Sometimes weed jars make good bait containers.
California tip for ya.
Just make sure you don't smoke it.
😄
A clear small casting bubble with fly line tippet and nymph, or just about anything on the end. No need for a sinker. Hook and bait will be enough drop it, and bounce off the bottom where you want it.
Nice! I think trout get scared after the first week of being stocked, they seem to move from the top to 18in off the bottom. So, great call on switching it up! I know in another of your trout videos I said my first fishing trip was a trout outing at the Clinch River, but I was wrong. It was actually the Holston Valley river behind the steam plant, it was for trout though. The other place I couldn't remember was Cherokee lake. Felt like a liar had to correct myself 😅. I had to keep it Realistic!
To be fair, the bobber fishing would not have worked when you are using floating bait like the gulp worms or power eggs. Your bait should be no more than a couple inches under the surface.
I'd recommend handling the fish a little better. These fish are most delicate; maybe use a net and wet your hand before grabbing them. Good stuff though!
being british we mostly use real baits so a good old trout taker is a lob worm "earthworm" and the maggot is so succeful its band in almost all trout fisherys in britain makes trout go crazy and that trotting tequeic works populair in britain as well for river fishing, float fishing works better for still waters or very slow moving canals and deeper rivers but floats don't realy scare fish if taht were teh case it would make carp fishing impossable.
when I trout fish I am almost always using bottom rig with the corn scent dough bait or a jakes spoon. never fails, always catch a good amount of rainbows
Your using the wrong set up and float for float fishing trout, also reduce the size of your tackle for trout, smaller hook, weight and line.
Fish are not float shy. When you run a float go deep enough to put your offering in their kitchen. That’s why you had poor bobber action. When you went to drifting you were down in the kitchen. You should have been running at least 4’ under the bobber.
God damn man! What state do you live in? All the trout are finger sized! It’s embarrassing!
Love those little 6 spot cases. Mostly for the irony of them at the local "dollar" store. Empty and labeled "tackle box" they sell them for $3. Full of nails and crap and labeled as a "picture hanging kit" they're $1.25... I have a lot of nails and little brackets in the junk drawer with no purpose... 😅
The best fishing items don’t even saying fishing on them!
“Bendable looped fiberglass stick” for a fishing rod
I believe u might not have the correct depth I have fished similar stuff like trout magnets I always find if the depth isn’t perfect they won’t take u want it to just barely skim across the top of the river bed if that makes any sense
Bring a zip lock sandwich bag with you. Thank you for the video.
When float fishing current add a few split shot 14 inches above your bait.
Float isnt the problem. Problem is using floating bait on a float. U would have to use more weight cause the water on the top is faster than the bottom. So ur bait isnt getting down because the float is dragging the bait downstream. Need to trot and keep the slack line off the water.
just a pointer.. the float rig would work if you were using a bait that didnt float, even with the split shot the bait will still float to the top.
love the videos btw
there is no way that a power egg floats a 1/8 oz split shot... if it did my bottom rig wouldn't ever get snagged
Not float all the way to the top with the weight. But it's still going to float up above the weight unless you have the weight right above the hook.
yep, even the power egg will float off the bottom with a bottom rig if the hook is small enough. That worm was big so it had to have been floating above the shot.
@@RealisticFishing I used the floating work for carp and yes they do float even with a split shot that's what I used for carp have it float half way up and carp would sometimes get it
